FlashVars, XML

Im new to placing external data into Flash. I just got CS3
and Im trying to use Flash to dynamically load XML data via a
FlashVars call in the HTML.
The problem is I have followed the very straight forward AS2
Help files for using FlashVars and URL variables. I have placed the
code directly from the Help file into the Html between
<noscript> <noscript>and i keep getting undefined. I
have tried saving the file as flash 8 and i am publish flash 8. I
have no idea why this simple tutorial isnt working! Please help and
thanks in advance!!!!
I feel like such a noob.

Help?
It seem like the FlashVars doesnt want to work? Any
reasons?

  • WMode Transparent not displaying in Windows/Firefox

    Hello, I'm using Wordpress and a Wordpress flash plugin
    called Showtime Slideshow as the site's gallery. It works
    perfectly in the standard wmode=window setting in
    Firefox/Windows, but I have a dropdown menu that
    overlaps with the Flash. I was able to figure out the wmode
    needs to be opaque or transparent, but when I use those
    settings, nothing is displayed at all. It works fine in
    Windows/IE, Mac/IE and Mac/Firefox, so there is something
    in the code that Windows/Firefox doesn't like in this code
    (another Flash object from YouTube with wmode=transparent
    displays correctly).
    Here is the code that the plugin generates:
    <!-- generated by showtime WP plugin -->
    <script type='text/javascript'>
    var flashvars = {
    xml                : 'http://www.youtag.lu/youtagdesign/wp-content/plugins/showtime-slideshow/showtime/getxml.php?attr=id^433*source^medium*sourcehd^large*',
    width                : '674',

    showtext          : '',
    showalt               : 'on',
    shuffle               : '',
    scale               : 'noScale'
    var params = {};
    params.allowFullScreen = 'true';
    params.bgcolor = '#EDEAE6';
    params.quality = 'autohigh';
    params.wmode = 'transparent';
    //params.base = 'dirname(__FILE__)';
    //params.allowScriptAccess = 'local';
    var attributes = {};
    attributes.styleclass = 'showtime';
    swfobject.embedSWF ('http://www.youtag.lu/youtagdesign/wp-content/plugins/showtime-slideshow/showtime/st15.swf', 'st_0', '674', '448', '10.0.0', 'http://www.youtag.lu/youtagdesign/wp-content/plugins/showtime-slideshow/showtime/swfobject/expressInstall.swf', flashvars, params, attributes);
    </script>
    [taken from the Showtime Slideshow demo page]
    Based on that code, can anyone see anything that
    would cause the whole slideshow to not display at all?

    Bump. Could anyone take a look at the code?

  • Problems loading songs into flash mp3 player

    I am very new to actionscript, and I am still trying to learn some of the basics, but I'm getting there, understanding it better with help from great forums like this one.
    I have a music community website, visitors can sign up, upload mp3 files, their files get uploaded into their own folder named '$id' in the php code, (if they are the 10th member to sign up, their folder would be named 10, and so on)
    I have a prebuilt flash player that I want to playback the mp3 files just for that member when their profile is being viewed, I have some code in the mp3 upload script that automatically writes an xml file to their folder containing their song data, with Andrei1's help, I got that part working using flashvars, now the problem I am having is that I can't get the songs to play back, the data is there but no music.
    as I said I am using a prebuilt flash player that is using a static call to a directory, so should I use flashvars again to load the mp3 files into the player? and I also need help figuring out what to change in the actionscript.
    here is the object embed src for the html:
    <param name="movie" value="flplayer1a.swf">
                        <embed src="flplayer1a.swf" FlashVars="xml=<?php echo "members/$id/playlist.xml" ?>"></embed>
                        <param name="FlashVars" value="xml=<?php echo "members/$id/playlist.xml" ?>">
    and here is the actionscript code for the playback on frame 1
    stop();
    var myFormat:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
    myFormat.color = "0xFFFFFF";
    list.setRendererStyle("textFormat", myFormat);
    var trackToPlay:String;
    var pausePosition:int = 0;
    var songURL:URLRequest;
    var isPlaying:Boolean = false;
    var i:uint;
    var myXML:XML = new XML();
    var XML_URL:String = loaderInfo.parameters.xml;
    var myXMLURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest(XML_URL);
    var myLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(myXMLURL);
    myLoader.addEventListener("complete", xmlLoaded);
    function xmlLoaded(event:Event):void {
        myXML = XML(myLoader.data);
        var firstSong:String = myXML..Song.songTitle[0];
       var firstArtist:String = myXML..Song.songArtist[0];
      songURL = new URLRequest("????" + firstSong + ".mp3");
       status_txt.text = "1. "+firstSong +" - "+firstArtist;
         for each (var Song:XML in myXML..Song) {
    i++;
      var songTitle:String = Song.songTitle.toString();
    var songArtist:String = Song.songArtist.toString();
    list.addItem( { label: i+". "+songTitle+" - "+songArtist, songString: songTitle, Artist: songArtist, songNum: i } )
    var myArray = new Array (0,0);
             list.selectedIndices = myArray; // This highlights song 1 by default
    gotoAndStop(3);
    this is on frame 2 for the song switching
    songURL = new URLRequest("?????" + trackToPlay + ".mp3");
    and this on frame 3:
    stop();
    var snd:Sound = new Sound();
    var channel:SoundChannel;
    var context:SoundLoaderContext = new SoundLoaderContext(5000, true);
    snd.load(songURL, context);
    channel = snd.play(pausePosition);
    I'm starting to build my own flash player based on what I have learned here, I just have to figure this part out and I'm good to go.

    songURL = new URLRequest("?????" + trackToPlay + ".mp3"); and
    songURL = new URLRequest("????" + firstSong + ".mp3");
    this is where the movie looks for mp3 files, when I downloaded this prebuilt player, the line looked like this
    songURL = new URLRequest("http://www.mydomain.com/mp3_files" + firstSong + ".mp3");
    songURL = new URLRequest("http://www.mydomain.com/mp3_files" + trackToPlay + ".mp3");
    this is the part I am trying to figure out how to change, if I were to have all the members mp3 files go into the mp3_files folder, the player works fine, no problems at all, but I don't want all the members mp3s in one folder, they need to be in each members folder(which I have it set up to do) and I can't figure out how to change the "http://www.mydomain.com/mp3_files" to http://www.mydomain.com/members/$id, that's why I was asking if we add another value in the flash vars, again my inexperience with 2 way communication between as3 and php variables is what's choking me
    the list component is a movie clip
    "You did not answer the question about whether scripts are spread through several frames"
    the first frame has all the code for variables, xml loading, inserting data, the second frame has code for song switching, the third frams has the sound variables, button functions, scrubber and volume, animated meters, etc., I hope i answered it this time, being a newbie, I am trying to answer the best I can.

  • Load XML with flashvars?

    Hey folks
    I have a flash photo gallery that uses XML to tell the flash
    what pics to load in and display. Works really great but I want to
    take it a step further and be able to specify the xml file being
    loaded from HTML. I guess using Flashvars unless there's another
    method that works better?
    in my actionscript, I have this line
    xmlData.load("images.xml");
    and that's telling it to load in the xml file that has the
    info for all the pics
    is there any way to replace that with flash vars and actually
    have it work?
    What we're trying to do is have a different photo gallery on
    each page, and instead of making a separate flash movie & xml
    for each one, we want to just have 1 "gloabal" flash movie and then
    just a different xml file for each different gallery.
    Anyone have any ideas how I can get it to work?
    I know it's probably some easy little thing I keep missing
    :(

    You just need to replace the file name in:
    xmlData.load("images.xml"); with
    your variable name, set by FlashVars. I'd suggest using
    SWFObject to set the
    flash var - it makes it really easy.
    Example:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var so = new SWFObject("gallery.swf", "gallery", "400",
    "300", "8",
    "#FFFFFF");
    so.addVariable("xmlFile", "gallery1.xml");
    so.write("flashcontent");
    </script>Then in Flash:
    xmlData.load(xmlFile);

  • Flashvars, loaderinfo for mp3 player with xml

    ok, I am using flash cs5, am pretty new to as3, and I've been trying for 3 days to figure this out, as of yet have not been able to.
    I have built a music community website, obviously members can sign up for an account, and upload mp3 files to their accounts.
    now I'll explain in as much detail as I can.
    Once registration is complete, the php script creates a folder in the members directory on my server with their unique id, then when they go and upload an mp3, it uploads it to their folder and automatically creates a playlist.xml file for the song(s)
    so, I have a prebuilt flash mp3 player that I got from developphp.com, his as3 code calls for a static directory for the audio and xml, now since the flash player will live in the root, and the xml and audio will live in the members/$id folders, I am told to use flashvars and loaderinfo.parameters to do what I need, and that is to load the xml and mp3 files into the player for the profile that is being viewed at that moment, so lets look at what I've put into the html object and embed.
    lets use profile #7
    <param name="movie" value="flplayer.swf?<?php print"$id/playlist.xml" ?>">
                <embed src="flplayer.swf?<?php print "$id/playlist.xml" ?>"> (please tell me if I have done this incorrectly)
    now if we go to the profile.php?id=7 page, thius is what the page source looks like:
    <param name="movie" value="flplayer.swf?7/playlist.xml">
                <embed src="flplayer.swf?7/playlist.xml>">
    now here is where I am stuck, as I said the flash mp3 player urlLoader and URLRequest, and I have been searching for days to figure out what I am supposed to do to get the player to pick up on the flash vars, here is the top part of the as3 code where it calls for the mp3 and the xml.
    stop();
    var myFormat:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
    myFormat.color = "0xFFFFFF";
    list.setRendererStyle("textFormat", myFormat);
    var trackToPlay:String;
    var pausePosition:int = 0;
    var songURL:URLRequest;
    var isPlaying:Boolean = false;
    var i:uint;
    var myXML:XML = new XML();
    var XML_URL:String = "mp3_playlist.xml";
    var myXMLURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest(XML_URL);
    var myLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(myXMLURL);
    myLoader.addEventListener("complete", xmlLoaded);
    function xmlLoaded(event:Event):void {
        myXML = XML(myLoader.data);
       var firstSong:String = myXML..Song.songTitle[0];
       var firstArtist:String = myXML..Song.songArtist[0];
       songURL = new URLRequest("mp3_files" + firstSong + ".mp3");
       status_txt.text = "1. "+firstSong +" - "+firstArtist;
         for each (var Song:XML in myXML..Song) {
    i++;
    var songTitle:String = Song.songTitle.toString();
    var songArtist:String = Song.songArtist.toString();
    list.addItem( { label: i+". "+songTitle+" - "+songArtist, songString: songTitle, Artist: songArtist, songNum: i } );
    var myArray = new Array (0,0);
             list.selectedIndices = myArray;
    gotoAndStop(3);
    I am not asking for free work, I'm just trying to get pointed in the right direction, through searching I have been trying to find out how and what to change, and I have been having a great deal of trouble finding the info, I'm ready to pull my hair out.

  • Hard-coded playlist XML url into Flashvar?

    Hey All,
    So right now, I have a video player that pulls in all sorts
    of info (flv url, caption file url, video title, description,
    preview image, etc.) through an external xml file (playlist.xml).
    It works great, but I need to change the coding so it's not
    hard-coded into the FLA, rather from the embed code for the swf.
    Any idea how I can do this?
    Here's the chunk of AS3 code that's involved in the original
    loading of the XML data as well as the html text too.
    Thanks!
    Joe

    I tried the solution here:
    http://www.actionscript.org/forums/showthread.php3?t=185370
    But couldn't get it to work... Still looking.

  • XML not loading in SWF

    Please, please someone help. I have been at this for days and can't see the woods for the trees any more.
    I have a swf embedded in a htm file. I pass FlashVars to it with a view to setting colours for symbols already in the swf.
    No matter what I do I simply cannot get the xml loaded. Can someone help and have a look at the following code and tell me where I am going wrong.
    I am using Flash CS4/AS 3. The default class is com.main and all .AS files are located in a folder 'com' within the root. All fla. .swf and  .xml files are located in the root.

  • Using servlet to generate xml

    Hi,
    I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to post this but hopefully someone can point me in the correct direction or answer my question.
    I am using swfchart 5.08.  I'm new to this but have read the documentation and had an older version which didn't use the AC_FL_Content but was able to use a servlet to generate the XML. I recently downloaded the latest version into a new directory and was trying to see if I could get it to work. It doesn't appear to call my servlet.
    In my directory structure I have:
    public_html
    has the charts_library directory, resources directory, and the AC_RunActiveContent.js, charts.swf, charts.txt, and sample.html files. I have a procurement.jsp file which is used to run the flash player.
    WEB-INF/classes
       has the class file for XMLGen
    WEB-INF/src/com/sbec/swfchart508
       has the source XMLGen.java file
    I created sample3.jsp as a copy of the new sample.html. I moved over my code from the previous version (mostly just setting up a string called "query1" containing the chart and chart data variable data).
    I changed the line from the sample.html
    Code:
    'FlashVars', 'library_path=charts_library&xml_source=sample.xml',
    to
    Code:
    'FlashVars', 'library_path=charts_library&xml_source=XMLGen<%=query1%>',
    I have tried to put the full path to XMLGen (i.e. com.sbec.swfchart508.XMLGen) and it still didn't work.
    It doesn't seem to call my servlet. None of the System.out.println statements appear.  It brings up the page and says: Loading XMLGen? followed by the items in my "query1" string. I use the alert messages to see that the query1 string is correct..
    Can anyone tell me why it isn't calling my servlet?
    Thanks in advance,
    Elly

    Hi,
    I'm running into the same problem deploying the classes generated by the class generator. Code works fine from JDeveloper, but had to put my DTD in the directory where my classes are. Deploying the classes with Apache's JServ gives me a NullPointer exception on the first addNode method. I guess it can't find the DTD. I tried to put the DTD in many locations but this didn't fix the problem. Any suggestions?
    Steve,
    Did you fix this problem? Thanx!

  • How to use FlashVars to set the default option on a combobox

    We are using XCelcius to display data in an XML file that is populated by another program using the Web Services approach.
    On our widget, there is a combobox that allows the user to select a specific range of data.  In Xcelcius, the value of this combobox can be defaulted using the Behavior->Default Options->Combo.
    This is good, but this also means hardcoding a particular value.  What we'd like to do is set the Default Option on the combobox via a FlashVar.
    Is this level of behavior exposed via the FlashVars so we can define the default option in our HTML file?
    Thanks for reading.

    unfortunately you cannot dynamically set the default option in 'Any' selector - so your Flash Vars approach will not work

  • Skin Setting not working with XML file

    I am trying to use the Adobe Flash Playback with a flashvars skin setting.  I am pointing this setting to an xml file where I am trying to overide the playButtonOverlay image.  Below is my code.  I am using MVC, so you will see a couple Html Helpers.  The helpers are working just fine.  It is only the skin setting I can't seem to get to work.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Michael.
    Html File
    <object width="384" height="288" >
         <param name="movie" value="http://fpdownload.adobe.com/strobe/FlashMediaPlayback.swf" />
         <param name="flashvars" value="src=<%: Model.VideoFilePath %>&poster=<%: Model.PosterFilePath %>&skin=/Skin/FlashPlayerSkin.xml" />
         <param name="allowFullScreen" value="false" />
         <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />
         <param name="quality" value="high" />
         <param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
         <embed src="http://fpdownload.adobe.com/strobe/FlashMediaPlayback.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"
              allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="false" width="384" height="288"
              flashvars="src=<%: Model.VideoFilePath %>&poster=<%: Model.PosterFilePath %>&skin=/Skin/FlashPlayerSkin.xml"
              quality="high" wmode="transparent" />
    </object>
    XML File
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
    <skin>
      <elements basePath="/Content/MFBImages/FlashPlayer/">
        <element id="playButtonOverlayNormal" src="playButtonOverlay.png"/>
        <element id="playButtonOverlayDown" src="playButtonOverlay_down.png"/>
        <element id="playButtonOverlayOver" src="playButtonOverlay_over.png"/>
      </elements>
    </skin>

    Thank you both for replying so quickly.  I still don't seem be having too much luck.  The first thing I did was watched fiddler, and it did show an error with crossdomain.xml.  So I added the below elements to a crossdomain.xml file in my root folder.  I also changed all my paths to be absolute for both the skin flashvar and xml, but still no luck.
    crossdomain.xml
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
    <!DOCTYPE cross-domain-policy SYSTEM "http://www.macromedia.com/xml/dtds/cross-domain-policy.dtd">
    <cross-domain-policy>
      <allow-http-request-headers-from domain="*" headers="SOAPAction,Content-Type"/>
    </cross-domain-policy>
    Since I am having trouble with the xml, I decided to try and just put the skin element into the html page where the flash player is located.  I then removed the flashvar skin element out of the player.  Below is my code for the skin element and flashplayer with absolute paths.  The player still seems to use the default overlay play button.  Any other suggestions would help out greatly.
    <skin>
    <elements basePath="http://localhost:1852/Content/MFBImages/FlashPlayer/">
      <element id="playButtonOverlayNormal" src="playButtonOverlay.png"/>
      <element id="playButtonOverlayDown" src="playButtonOverlay_down.png"/>
      <element id="playButtonOverlayOver" src="playButtonOverlay_over.png"/>
    </elements>
    </skin>
    <object width="384" height="288" >
    <param name="movie" value="http://fpdownload.adobe.com/strobe/FlashMediaPlayback.swf" />
    <param name="flashvars" value="src=http://localhost:1852/VideoLibrary/Agents/test video.flv&poster=http://localhost:1852/Content/MFBImages/AgentImage/Poster.jpg" />
    <param name="allowFullScreen" value="false" />

  • Write data to local xml file

    Does anyone know if there is a way to write data to a local xml file using the Connection refresh Button??

    Hi there Glenn,
    That's tricky...
    Are you using SP1?  You need to have at least SP1.
    The XLFs were generated with an internal build newer than SP1, but they should still work in earlier builds.
    If you changed the HTML file, that might be the cause.  The SWF references in the HTML file must be exact.
    Also, the range names must match as defined in the XLF/SWF.  The bolded lines following should match.  It's easiest if they all use the SWF name.
    else if (hasRequestedVersion) {
    // if we've detected an acceptable version
    // embed the Flash Content SWF when all tests are passed
    AC_FL_RunContent(
    "src", "consumer",
    "width", "380",
    "height", "308",
    "align", "middle",
    "id", "consumer",

  • Loading XML Path from Params

    I'm an action script noob, so be gentle.
    I was given a file and told to make the xml path an external variable. This is the code I have:
    var panelNumber:Number;
    var xmlLoaderPath:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
    xmlLoaderPath.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,loadXML);
    xmlLoaderPath.load(new URLRequest("FlashFiles/CP_UnsecuredHomePgDataXMLPath.xml"));
    function loadXML(e:Event):void
        var myPath:XML;
        XML.ignoreWhitespace = true;
        myPath = new XML(e.target.data);
        var path:String = myPath.path;
        //===================================================================================\\
        var xmlLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
        xmlLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, showXML);
        xmlLoader.load(new URLRequest(path));
        //===================================================================================\\
    var myData:XML;
    function showXML(e:Event):void {
        XML.ignoreWhitespace = true;
        myData = new XML(e.target.data);
        var image1:String = myData.quote[0].image;
        var image2:String = myData.quote[0].image2;
        var button1:String = myData.button_image;
        // Adding movies
        var bgs:mc_bg = new mc_bg();
        bgs.name = "bgs";
        addChild(bgs);
    Now, on this page (http://www.afcomponents.com/tutorials/img_loop/3/), what I want to do seems to be rather simple. But I don't know how to modify this script to make it work right.

    Your best bet is to use FlashVars to load that kind of data. And you should use SWFObject to embed the Flash in the page. Not only is it the best way to embed Flash, it makes it super easy to pass in FlashVars - either from inline code in the page or a query parameter. I'll assume you just want to enter the path in some code in the page. Then you'd do something like this:
    <script type="text/javascript">
         var flashvars = {xmlPath: "http://www.somedomain.com/files/myxml.xml"};
         swfobject.embedSWF("myContent.swf", "myContent", "550", "400", "9.0.0", "", flashvars);
    </script>
    Then you have a div named myContent that your Flash is written into:
    <div id="myContent">
    </div>
    Then in Flash you'd grab the xmlPath variable like so:
    myXMLPath = loaderInfo.parameters.xmlPath;
    You can get SWFObejct from: http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/
