Flat File Import, Ignore Missing Columns?

The text files I'm importing always contain a fixed set of columns for example total number of full set of columns is 60, or a subset of those columns (some csv contain 40 columns, some contain 30 or 20 or any other number.) .  I would like to import
these csv based on the column header inside the each csv, if it is a subset of full column set then the missing columns can be ignored with null value.
At the moment in SQL 2012, if I import a subset of columns in the csv file, the data doesn't import...I assume because the actual file doesn't include every column defined in the flat file source object?
Is it possible to accomplish this without dynamically selecting the columns,  or using script component?
Thanks for help.

If the columns coming are dynamic, then you might have to first get it into staging table with a single column reading entire row contents onto that single column and parse out the column information using string parsing logic as below
http://visakhm.blogspot.in/2010/02/parsing-delimited-string.html
This will help you to understand what columns are present based on which you can do the insertion to your table.

  • Reject columns which exceed a particular length during OWB flat file import

    Hi,
I have a file in csv format. This file has a lot of columns out of which i need to use only a few. I created a file in OWB using the given csv file using the file import wizard. I am using this file to create an external table.
The import is working fine, But the problem is that certain columns (which are not required to be processed) have very huge data. This is leading to rejection of certain rows (when i deploy the external table) which have valid data for the required columns, but too huge data was columns which i do not need.
But these rows must not be rejected.
I wanted to know if there any way by which we can truncate/ insert null in these unwanted columns (either during flat file import / or during creation of external table), so that the row is taken in partially(with the wanted columns)?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Julie,
As Jim posted, you could try a RAW file instead of a CSV file. In SSIS, the Raw File destination writes raw data to a file. Because the format of the data is native to the destination, the data requires no translation and little parsing. So does the Raw
File source. Besides, the Raw File destination/source can improve the package performance because they write data more quickly than other destinations such as the Flat File, the OLE DB, and Recordset destinations.

  • Flat file conversion-Ignore data in incoming file(Sender)

    Hi All,
We have a below requirement for sender flat file:
In our datatype we have Recordset

In file we are getting  as
                 Header(Values)
                 Item......
                 Item.....
                 Trailor(Values)
I want to ignore Header and Trailor data at channel level.Could you please tel me how Can i do that?
    Thanks in Advance
    Best Regards,
    Harleen Kaur Chadha

    Hi,
For the structure mentioned in query
we are receiving data from sender as
         Records
             Header(Values)
             Item....
             Item...
            Trailor
and we have set recordset per message as 1 in communication channel
      In sender datatype we have
              Records
               Header (Field1..1)
                Item(Record 1...n)
              Trailor(Field 1..1)
             Records
We are using ignore parameter to ignore header and Trailor values it works if we are getting one item but if multiple items are coming its failing at channel level.
Could you please suggest which parameter we can use to ignore Header and Trailor using recordset per message as 1 as a option?
    Thanks in advance

  • CR & LF characters at the end of records when using delimited flat file (CR is missing)

    Hi All,
I have a requirement where data of SQL query needs to be loaded to a CSV file.
The row delimiter of the CSV file has to be CR-LF.
In the flat file connection manager, I have mentioned Header Row delimiter as "{CR}{LF}" and under columns section, row delimiter is specified as "{CR}{LF}".
But when I open the detsnation CSV file using notepad++, I see only "LF" at the end of all rows.
Can you please let me know how can I get both CR & LF at the end of each row
Below is the screen shot of the flat file connection manager which I have used for CSV destination file:
    Raksha

    Hi Raksha,
Just as Vaibhav said, I’m curious why you need use “CR & LF” as row delimiter in Flat File Connection Manage. Since you can use "CR" as row delimiter in Flat File Connection Manager and it worked fine, you can directly specify "CR"
as row delimiter in Flat File Connection Manage.
Besides, if you still want to replace “LF” with “CR & LF” in the text file, we can use Notepad++’s Find/Replace feature or Edit -> EOL Conversion to achieve the goal. Then we can specify "CR & LF" as row delimiter in Flat File
    Connection Manage.
The following blog about conversion between “LF” and “CR & LF” row delimiter in Notepad++ is for your reference:

  • Exporting historical data to text file with MAX misses columns of data?

I am using Labview 7.1 with DSC module 7.1 and wants to export data to either excel format or .txt.
I have tried this with the historical data export in MAX, and also programmatically with the "write traces to spreadsheet file.vi" available in the DSC module. All my tags in my tag engine file (*.scf) are defined to log data and events. Both the update tag engine deadband and the update database are set to 0 %.
My exported excel or text file seems reasonalbe except that some columns of data are missing. I dont understand
why data from these tags are not in the exported files since they have the same setup in the (.scf) as other tags which are okay exported?
All defined tags can be seen using the NI hypertrend or MAX. Also the ones that are not correctly exported to file.
    Appreciate comments on this.
    Best regards,
    Ingvald Bardsen

I am using LV and DSC 7.1 with PCI-6251 and max 4.2. In fact, just one column of values does not make sense. In attachment, follows the excel exported file. The last of column called ...V-002 that is the problem. I put probes for checking values but them shows correct. When the file is exported that to show values wrong.
The problem of missing values in column i solved putting 0% in field of deadband.

  • Extra column to be added while importing data from flat file to SQL Server

I have 3 flat files with only one column in a table.
The file names are bars, mounds & mini-bars.
Table 'prd_type' has columns 'typeid' & 'typename' where typeid is auto-incremented and typename is bars, mounds & mini-bars.
I Import data from 3 files to prd_details table. This table has columns 'pid', 'typeid' & 'pname' where pid is auto-incremented and pname is mapped to flat files and get info from them, now i wanted the typeid info to be received from prd_type table.
Can someone please suggest me on this?

You can get it as follows
Assuming you've three separate data flow tasks for three files you can do this
    1. Add a new column to pipeline using derived column transformation and hardcode it to bars, mounds or mini-bars depending on the source
    2. Add a look task based on prd_type table. use query as
    SELECT typeid,typename
    FROM prd_type
    Use full cache option
Add lookup based on derived column. new column -> prd_type.typename relationship. Select typeid as output column
    3. In the final OLEDB destination task map the typeid column to tables typeid column.
In case you use single data flow task you need to include a logic based on filename or something to get the hardcoded type value as bars, mounds or mini-bars in the data pipeline

  • Using ssis import a multiple flat files with different mappings

I have an scenario for import a file
20 different flat file source and having XML mapping document in a table.
get files from that path(i have path and file name extension in table)
i have map this file based on the file name extension in dynamically
create a 20 different staging table based on mapping in dynamically
    kindly help for this

    Hi Karthick,
As Arthur said, if you don't want to hard code the data flow, you need to read XML from the SQL Server table and use Script Task to implement the dynamic columns mapping. To read XML from a SQL table, you can refer to:
    http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2009/02/13/sql-server-simple-example-of-reading-xml-file-using-t-sql/
In the Script Task, we need to parse the first row of the flat file to get the columns information and save that to a .NET variable. Then, the variable will be used to create the query that will be used to create SQL table. For more information, please see:

  • Flat file missing in datasource

Hello iam loading the flatfile record into the infocube in this process while iam creating datasource after naming the data source i need to select flat file option for source file field  but flat file option is missing.how to solve this problem.i think basis guys need to configure this .what do u experts suggest

Create a new source system for flat file and then try if you don't have one. Yes - Basis guy basically do it or if you have permission, you also can create it.
    To create source system:
RSA1>Source Systems>right click and click Create
Choose radiobutton Symble with PC, File System(Manual Metadata,....)
Click Transfer and give the logical system name and source system name
    click continue and activate it.
Now you can use this source system to load flat file.

  • Sender file adapter dropping last column during content conversion

I am trying to process a flat file with pipe delimited data, but when the last column of the file is empty the file adapter ignores the column, causing issues with the subsequent mapping program.  For example, if the file contains the following data..
    1||three|
... the converted content produced is...
       <column1>1<column1>
       <column2/>
       <column3>three</column3>
My mapping is expecting that <column4/> also be delivered in order to function properly.  The fields are all defined in record.fieldNames, and if there is any data present following the third pipe it is assigned correctly to the column4 element.  I have also experimented with setting missingLastFields to "add", and tried explicitly specifying endFieldSeparator to 'nl' with no success.
Is there anyway to control this behavior in the communication channel, or is my only option to to account for it within the mapping by using mapWithDefault function for every field that appears at the end of a record?

    Nataliya,
Ensuring that the element is populated during the mapping appears to be the only way to account for this.  Therefore, whenever mapping the last column of a record set, I just made sure to use the MapWithDefault function in case the last field of the record is empty.  It's a little extra manual effort, but it appears to be working fine so far.  I was hoping for a better answer myself.

  • SSIS project - read multiple flat files with different formats

    hi all,
i need to import multiple flat files with different formats into different tables of the sql server database and not able to figure out the best way out in ssis to do so...
please advise the possible methods in ssis to do so and if possible the process which can be dynamic as file names or columns might change in future.

    Hi AK1987,
To import flat files with dynamic columns, we can use Script Task inside a Foreach Loop Container to parse the first row of the flat file to get the columns names and save them into a .NET variable, then, we can create “Create Table” script based on this
variable, and then store the script into a SSIS package variable. After that, we create a staging table based on the package variable, load the flat file data to the staging table. Eventually, we load data from the staging table to the destination table. For

  • Too many flat files with different formats.

    Hi gurus,
i have a headache problems. that is follows:
We will upload data from flat files, but you know there are about 100 .xls files and with different formats.
and as you know  the datasource of the flat file must correspond to every fields of the flat file.
but you know there are 100 flat files and if we donot do any optimise,we will create about 100 transformation and 100 datasource to meet our requirements.
    but that seems impossible.
is there any good idea to decrease the number of transfomation ?

  • Error while uploading flat file

    Hello
My flat file(.csv) has 3 columns. But when i am uploading and when i check Master data, it just shows me the first column. Why is it so?
When i maintain Master data, do i have to maintan attr, text and hierarchies? In mapping and transfer rules? What should I map, Attr or text or hierarchies or all the 3?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Let me make some guesses about your situation.
You use an IS with Direct Update for text master data upload. In this case in Master Data maintenance you'll see the IO's code and its attributes. To see IO's texts you need to click on a 'Text' icon, with a pencil or glasses.
For direct update of master data you need to create an IS with direct update (the last radio button in the 'Create Infosource' screen).
Then right click on an IS - Assign Datasource, choose flat file source system, confirm all system 'Save changes' proposals.
In Infosource change screen press 'Activate'.
Number of datasources for a master data will depend on the settings for the IO. If this IO has master data, texts and hierarchies, then you'll have 3 DSs.
In the 'Datasource' field of the screen you can see what is this DS for. Click on this field and choose another DS. Press 'Activate'. Do it the 3rd time if you have 3 DSs.
Then during an infopackage creation you'll be able to choose an option (Master data attributes, texts, hierarchies) and upload the appropriate data.

  • File Adapter: Flat-file to XML

    New to the Oracle ESB.
I am using the file adapter to read in a fixed-length flat file, have mapped it to an xsd and now I just want to dump the resulting xml into a directory. I don't see an obvious way to do this without converting it back to a flat file (by pointing the file writer back to a similar flat file xsd). Missing something obvious?
    Thank you!

File Adapters content conversion does not supprot such a nested strucutre currently.
The only format supported is the one shown in ths link,
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/2c/181077dd7d6b4ea6a8029b20bf7e55/content.htm
Either write a module that will do this conversion or Change the datatye for the source to the format shown in help.sap.

  • Migrating flat file in OBIEE from Windows to AIX

    Hello guys
I have a rpd built in my local windows environment and now it is ready to be pushed into Dev environment.. In my rpd, I have some flat files imported and configure for reporting, and the files are located in a windows directory..
My concern is, after migrating my rpd to Dev environment, since the DEV OBIEE server is running on AIX server, it may disconnect from flatfile DB in windows and result in no being able to report against the flat file..
Have you guys ever encounter such case? and how do you go about dealing with it?
    Your thoughts are much appreciated
    Thank you

    Mark,
You should be able to binary transfer the fmb / pll across and then recompile.
Anything windows specific would be a show stopper, otherwise I haven't had problems (also going back from Link to Windows) - but then my Forms are usually pretty simple.
The biggest pain is case sensitivity - Unix is and Windows isn't. You should standard all file names if you can and the biggest pain are the attached libraries - especially with Designer Generated Forms as one of them is InitCapped somewhere. For this I usually have to create an FMT / PLD and see what the form thinks the library is actually called in the attachment. Have fun!
