Flat screen LCD monitor

Has anybody got a flat screen running with a G3 desktop? I would like to run get an inexpensive one without replacing the video card. If you have a brand and model that worked with a VGA adaptor, please let me know, thanks.
G4 466/SONY DVD RW DW-Q30A, G3 233 Desktop   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   ipod-photo 60g, Sony Alpha 100 Camera

Madsen,
Is the G3 running OSX? If so, drivers for non-ATI video cards are hard to find or nonexistent so you may not get any 3D acceleration. Still it might give you the connectivity you need. If the G3 is running OS9, I believe suitable ixMicro drivers are installed as part of the OS if you haven't removed them.
Bill W mentioned the "auto-sense" adaptor. If you don't want to invest in a video card, this is pretty important as the "set the switches yourself" adaptors tend to be old and may not support the resolutions a new LCD monitor offers.
You don't need a powerful video card for OSX support. If you could find an ATI Rage 128 Orion (retail) it would have a VGA connector and offer 16MB VRAM. I've used one on my Beige G3 with OSX and it does quite well with OSX's built-in video drivers. This page:
http://ati.amd.com/products/rage128/rageorion/specs.html
shows the resolutions the Orion supports. With later ATI drivers, you might get wide-screen support. Other older ATI Mac video cards are listed on this page:
http://ati.amd.com/products/discontinued.html
Most of those toward the bottom of the list should still work and it gives you an idea of what to look for on the used/pulled market.

  • I just bought a recertified Mac Mini, and I wonder if anyone here knows if it's possible to hook up my Mac flat screen LCD monitor to it using what adapters? I currently have a DVI to ADC adapter connected to my G4 Powermac.

I just bought a recertified Mac Mini core duo - it's not the newer model-, and I wonder if anyone here knows if it's possible to hook up my Mac flat screen LCD monitor to it  and using what adapters? I currently have a DVI to ADC adapter connected to my G4 Powermac.
The company I bought it from is not Apple, and I may regret that. It was in my price range, though.
This is the first time I've used this community, and I've been a Mac owner since 2000. Thanks in advance!

  • Exactly what cables and hardware do I need to connect my early-2008 MacBook Pro to a flat-screen TV monitor to have both video and audio?

    Hello--
I'm trying to figure out how to connect my 15" MacPro Book from early 2008 to a Sony flat screen TV monitor. I've been told I need a "Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter" and a "HDMI to HDMI" cable, but I've also been reading that some cables only work with 2010 & 2011 laptops and that I may need additional cable/hardware to obtain audio. Could someone advise me on exactly what products I need to purchase?
    Thank you!

Which MacBook Pro 15" do you have?
With the silver keyboard (Early 2008)) or that one with a black keyboard (Late 2008)?
If you habe the Late 2008 you can use a miniDisplay Port + Audio to HDMI like that one (stereo sound) or that one (5.1).
If you have the Early 2008, it's not so easy, because you need a DVI + Audio to HDMI like that one (the Audio Channels had to be converted to Coaxial!) So much more adapters! Maybe there is a manufaturer which has the all in one solution)
Both MacBook Pro DOESN'T support audio on the video output! The later ones (Mid 2010 and later) supports Audio output within the miniDisplay Port.

  • UltraSharp 2407FPW 24.0-inch Wide Flat Panel LCD Monitor Supports HDCP,

The Dell UltraSharp 2407FPW 24.0-inch Wide Flat Panel LCD Monitor Supports HDCP. I am going to order a Mac Pro and it has an Ati Radeon X1900 XT which is HDCP ready. But I really want an Apple Cinema 30 inch Display. Does anyone know how long it is going to take Apple to release the new displays with HDCP? And does anyone recommend the Dell Monitor> Is it better than the Apple Cinema Displays? Thank You.

looking at both up close I think the 3007WFP looks nicer than the apple 30 inch, it also supports HDCP.

  • Question about Dell-18.5" Widescreen Flat-Panel LCD Monitor-IN1910N

I just bought this monitor, and now realize it doesn't have speakers in it.  I don't see where I would add them.  Can anyone help?  Could you please tell me know kind of speakers would work, and how I would attach them?  Kind of defeats the purpose if I can't listen to music or watch movies.  Thank you!

  • Need input - Seeking an inexpensive flat screen

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good flat screen they have used that is not too expensive which will work well with my G4 MDD. I am not a power user, but I do make videos and would love to have a little bigger screen than my 17" tube model I have now. However, I am a tight cheeks and don't want to spend a ton of money for an Apple display. Any suggestions?

Almost any of the LCD monitors will work with your MDD G4. Samsung is a particularly good brand, though sometimes a bit more expensive than the lesser named brands. BTW, as far as monitor picture quality, contrast ratio is the single most important spec. CCD is second. Almost all LCDs are now at least 8 ms response time, so that spec is no longer very important.
Your 17" CRT monitor only measures 16", while a 17" LCD monitor measures 17". So you will have a slightly larger monitor if you just replace it in kind substituting an LCD for a CRT. A 19" widescreen LCD monitor will give you more space overall, but its height is only about the height of your 17" CRT. A 19" full screen LCD monitor is a good way to go for a big jump in screen area, without having to pay premium prices.
    I hope that helps.

  • LCD MONITOR

I just purchased a powershot sx50hs.  The screen (lcd monitor) came set to VERTICLE.  How do i reset it HORIZONTAL?

Check out page 183 of your user manual.  You need to deactivate auto rotation by the camera, and you can do that by pushing your camera's playback button, then clicking the menu button.  Use the selection wheel to scroll down to Auto Rotate, then select Off.  That should do the trick.

  • Urgent - iMac G4 Flat Panel - Is Adding Monitor or Flat Screen TV Possible?

    Hello,
As a present to my husband (mac guru) I would like to know if with his iMac Flat Panel G4, is it better to buy a 28 inch samsung computer monitor (flat panel) that he can also hook up his mac to or a kind of flat screen/panel LCD TV. The guys at futureshop and bestbuy seem to be "confused" when talking about macs and not pcs. With the computer monitor, there seems to be questions on if we'll be able to hook up our satellite tv... and with the tvs, there seems to be confusion on if we can hook up the computer. One of the reasons I want to hook the computer directly is my husband has had problems converting (burning to DVD) some videos with music background from iPhoto without doing a software update which requires us to change the timing with the audio and video in our already created slideshows. Please help quickly as some sales finish tomorrow. I need to know what to tell the store... i.e. what kind of jack or cables or capability I am looking for. Do I ask for USB port, coaxil input or what? Thanks in advance,
    Karen

Yes you can connect a display or monitor but exactly which ones depends on which iMac G4 you have.
All iMac G4s have a Mini VGA port this will allow you to connect any standard PC Monitor (with a VGA connector) and mirror the iMac's internal display only. The later iMac G4's also allow the connection of S-Video and Composite Video devices (most TV's have this type of input) which allows you to mirror the display on to the TV.
The MiniVGA to VGA and Mini VGA to S-Video/Composite adaptors are for sale online in the Apple Store ($19US/£15) or here.
If you wanted to extend the screen size again it is possible on some iMacs but requires a firmware hack that will invalidate your warranty.
I can't understand how having an external display will solve the burning to DVD issues though.....
Post back with your Screen size and processor speed for exact info - or read this recent post

  • Basic question: Is flat-screen TV + HDMI same as giant monitor on Mac Mini?

This must be an extremely basic question, though I don't see an answer in the Mac Mini FAQs or some initial searches here, so:
I just got a 40" flat-screen TV (1080). If I also get a Mac Mini with HDMI, and if I can avoid the miscellaneous display troubles that I see in posts here, will that TV act the same as a giant computer monitor? Or will it in some way remain inferior (in appearance, performance, etc.) to a dedicated computer monitor? (If so, how and why?)
Thanks much! I'm really curious about this.

Jev, when a DVI adaptor is connected from a computer to a HDMI port, the LCD steps down to emit a DVI signal and correspondingly when a MDP adaptor is connected to a HDMI port, the LCD steps down to emit a HDMI signal.
I have an EX55 Bravia connected MDP to HDMI from a 2009 Mini. The resolution and screen real-estate are perfect but not before I set Cinema at Scenes and Graphics at Video on the LCD and checked Font Smoothing at System Preferences. I can’t remember the font size I capped. The EX emits a HDMI signal. Cinema is great but Graphics are a tad sharp.
On the same floor I run a V40 Bravia connected DVI to HDMI from a 2008 Mini. Graphics is wonderful just like a large monitor without tweaking either the LCD or Mini. Here the V40 emits a DVI signal. Understandably Cinema is not as sharp but Graphics is great.
In essence your TV does not require a DVI input to emit a DVI signal.
    Keep us posted.

  • Does anyone recommend a flat screen monitor that works well with a MacBook?

I bought my 13" MacBook about 3 years ago and often find that I need a bigger screen for working on some projects but like the smaller portable size of my laptop. I'm thinking a good sized flat screen monitor would work for me, but don't want to drop a grand on an Apple monitor. Any one have luck with other brands?
I'm thinking 20 - 22". I mostly do my own marketing graphics and photography for my business and need to be able to work in Illustrator on a screen I can actually see things on. LOL!
Thanks for any suggestions or reviews.

  • TFT or LCD Flat screen?

I'm a designer and have been using a CRT monitor for years, I'd like to get a flat screen but I'm unsure of the difference between TFT and LCD. Which is best for both print & web design. Is the Apple 20"Cinema Display TFT? Will the noted colour cast on this be an issue?

...tft screens seem to be cheaper...
That's most likely due to more efficient manufacturing processes for the TFT panels. And don't forget, these things are graded with the "best" panels going to makers of higher quality displays. Sometimes one would think that the grading process is a bit "iffy" due to the notable number of high quality displays that arrive with dead pixels and other defects.
My "rule of thumb" is to buy the best I can afford without paying for too much more than I really need.

  • Are flat-screen displays more harmless than old monitors?

Hey guys, I know our community has very knowledgeable members...
I'm not sure if I've have grounds to say this, I don't remember if I read this before or heard this before of saw this before. I think that flat screen displays are more friendly to the eye than the old deep monitors (like that of the current eMac), do you know if this is true?
My mom and dad are planning to replace their eMac-like monitor which nowadays is operating faultly. I suggested a flat-screen display but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra money. We have no space issues, so a new fat monitor would be perfectly okay. We're only concerned about the whatever-it-is that the monitor radiates and that could deteriorate my parents' vision.
    Thank you very much.

I recently used an EMF meter (used for testing for electrical radiation) on a 14" Colour Portable TV in my daughter's bedroom and it went mad within 3 feet which is very worrying if you were sat in front of it which she was. I did the same test on an eMac at work and it was fine. I would conclude that LCD's are without a doubt better for your eyes due to the way they emit light but I think it would be unfair to assume all CRT's are made equal and eMac's in my experiment appear to be fine.

  • Monitor profiles for 17" flat screen

I've been moving Macs through our 3 systems to make way for a new Mac Pro and have hooked up a G5 to a flat screen 17" Apple display. The colours look really dark and contrasty, when I go to Calibrate the screen I receive the message that there is no Profile for this monitor to calibrate. I've looked through the lLibrary and the System for a profile called 17" flat screen or LCD in Colorsync but see nothing different from what is in the System or Library on this G5. Is it possible to download Profiles from Apple?
I should have a CD that came with the monitor, I'd have thought, but I dont.

Oh boy.. Hi, and welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums - I hope we can get you straightened out.. First, we'll need a bit more info on your system - what kind of Mac is it, what's the speed, memory and all that pertinent stuff.. I see from the profile you have that you're running Puma (OS X 10.1), which may make things a bit interesting.

  • Hooking up Flat screen tv to Macbook pro with a broken monitor via VGA

My monitor on my Macbook Pro recently went out. I am trying to hook it up to my Toshiba flat screen TV via DVI to VGA. When everything is hooked up, my TV just displays a screen saying "No Video Signal". I think this has to do with my display setting not being set to Detect Monitors on my Macbook. I also know there is a hot key (fn + f7) buuuuuuuuut, my laptop is password protected. So I think this may be causing the hot key to not work. My Mac is pretty old and I'd rather just hook it up to a spare monitor and use it as a desktop, and just save up and get a newer Macbook. Does anyone have any advice on how to get around this little problem I have seemed to run into?
By the way I am guessing at my operating system. I customer built my laptop back in 2007 so i'm not sure what I have in there haha. I do know I have a **** ton of ram

Seeing this is rather old give this a try, it can't hurt.
Connect the DVI to the VGA, both devices powered off.
Power up the Mac, then power up the monitor, wait a couple minutes.
If no results, go to system preferences, select display, and click detect displays.
    You can also try F3.
    Good luck

  • Have compaq desk top, trying to hook up HD flat screen monitor, won't work?

Haave Compaq, desk top, trying to hook up, HD, flat screen monitor, won't work

    Hello redheadjennieo,
I'm not sure Apple is going to write drivers for a Windows Operating System, so we may have to rely on the generic drivers.
What model pavilion do you have?
    What operating system?
Does the monitor say anything on the screen when it's connected to the computer and you turn it? (e.g. signal out of range, no input, etc)
