Flex 4.5 Moble Dates

If you need to have a date selection method on Flex 4.5 mobile what is the right way to approach this since apparently datefields are not part of the tool set?

Flex chart x-axis data spacing

hello
i am using flex chart line series and column series. i want
to display 100 data points, with different dates along the x-axis,
but i don't want all 100 points to be displayed at the same time as
the x-axis dates will not be readable. i want to have a fixed space
between each x-axis point and the user then scrolls along the
chart.
i read the API but do not see any way to add the x-axis
spacing?
also how i do put more data information, with each data point
if a mouse if placed over it, not just the X & Y data points.

you mentioned about using min/max values on the x-axis. That
is a good solution except i would then need to add buttons to say
,show the next 30 days.
I really want to to show 90days of data data, with say 30
days appearing at once, and the user just scrolls to see the rest
of the days data without having to press buttons for more data. Any
idea how i can do this?

Flex with Java - DB data access

Hello, folks,
I am developing a Java application and realized that I need
some advice. My application is simple:
I have a MSSQL server, tomcat 5.5 ,flex data services.
In my application , i have two combo boxes.. country, town..
i have populated the country combobox with the values from
DB(country table) obtained using the fill(List ListArgs) in
Assembler Class.
Now, based on the country selected in have to populate my
town combobox from (town table)
How can i populate the town combobox from the DB based on the
country code?
Is there any function to pass the selected index and populate
the town combo box..????

I have a doubt in combo box area itself.
I have two tables by name country_list and town_list
country_list consists of identity column , country_name and
country_code
town_list has identity column, country_code, town_code and
town_name
Normally while we use combobox in jsp, we have key value
pairs for combo box..
For eg:- if we have a Country combo , we have the country
name(United States) as text displayed and its country code (US) as
key.
So if i select the United States , i will be returned with
the value 'US' so that i can use it in query directly as
Select town_name, town_code from town_list where country_code
='US'
But while using flex , am not able to retieve the
country_code from country combo. its only returning the text and
the id.
Here am forced to write a nested query as follows
Select town_name, town_code from town_list where country_code
=( Select country_code from country_list where country_name='United
States')
Is there any way to get the country_code as key while i
select the country from country combo .
And also how to keep 'United States' as selected during the
intial load of the page.

Can flex 2 have local data persistence?

Guys, I am just checking RIA development environments. I am
aware the flash has local shared objects as a way of storing data
on a local machine. Is this available in Flex 2? It is essential
for the appication I wish to write. Any help welcome.

OK that is extremely useful, we do a lot of MD5 already. If I
may, could I pick your brains for another issue I am grappling with
on this potential flex project? Is there any way a flex component
could be built that was associated with a particular file type. So
that whenever such a file type was offered from an HTML page, this
component automatically processed it? This would be a parameter
file that the other parts of flex application would utilise.

yes i have used template.fmb only , and am using FND_KEY_FLEX.DEFINE as i mentioned earlier ,
i have not given any where clause -- should we give any where clause to retrieve the data into the combinations(LOV)?It depends on what values you want to retrieve.
i mean my requirement is if i give % and press tab all the valid combinations should be displayed.
its showing no entries found.Did you review 420787.1 referenced above?

Flex mobile app - which data grid control to use?

Hi,
Trying to build my first Flex mobile app in FlashBuilder 4.6 and I need a grid control to display a 2 dimmensional array of 6 columns x 50 rows.
The user doesn't don't need to have any interraction with the grid except for scrolling the rows.
I was looking at using dataGrid component but adobe doesn't recommend it for mobile apps.
Is there a grid component that is recommended for mobile apps?

Flex datagrid with complex data item - drag doesnt start sometimes

Hi,
my project has a datagrid which is rendering complex data item. I need to drag one row from the grid and drop it into the same grid but in a different position.
I have enabled drag, drop and dragMove.I am able to drag and drop the rows. The problem is that sometimes the drag doesnt start.
Here are a few scenarios where drag doesnt start
the first column is not editable. if I start my drag by doing a mouse down on the frist cell of the row, it usually drags an empty row but sometimes it drags the whole row.
if I have dragged and droped a row in position i(say). Then sometimes the row at position i-1 or i+1 doesnt get dragged no matter how many times i try to do mouse down and drag. However, if I drag some other row (not necessarily drop it elsewhere) and then try this row, it works.
any pointers would be helpful.

Update on item 4a -
This was a major issue (the main reason for opening this thread really) and I managed to resolve it!
As part of my application, I override the default DataGrid behavior for column selection (headerRelease event).
Instead of sorting, I change the column's header looks and define it as Selected (for showing its dynamic properties and enable its deletion).
At first I did this by setting styles, but the look didn't refresh unless I created a new instance of the header renderer.
Later I changed thi behavior to work with states, but I left the new header renderer instance creation commands and those lines created all the mess!
Conclusion -
If you define a custom header renderer for your datagrid column and then a custom item renderer, don't create a new instance of your header renderer!
It would still be nice to get some response for the other issues I raised.

FLEX- how to serialize date type to null in web service call

Does anyone know how to get actionscript to render a null date value '000:00:00T00:00:00' into a SOAP xml structure? I am calling a commercial web service that exposes data structures. I use one of these data structures as a parameter to a method call in the web service. The data structure has about 12 date fields and I need most of them to be null in the resulting database. The WSDL/SOAP force me to populate these fields with a date type. I can't figure out how to populate a date variable with a NULL value. The closest value I can get is '1899-11-30T00:00:00Z'. Below is the code I am using:

var emptyDate:Date = DateUtil.parseW3CDTF(dateStr);
newReqData.DateTimeInit = emptyDate;
When calling this same web service with a .Net client, it automatically puts in the null date value of '000:00:00T00:00:00' into the xml for me, if I don't populate the date field in the data structure.

Flex charting with Coldfusion data

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to do charting with data
coming from Coldfusion? I'm not a newbie, but not quite there yet

EDIT: No, that won't work. You use lastResult when using
HTTPService a different way. Not entirely sure what your problem is

Flex supported data types - Does Flex support MSSQL geometry data type. I use WSDL connection.

I looked at the AMF 3 document but did not find anything there. Connection to the MSSQL database is through WSDL.

How to show double byte data in a Flex application

Hi
I am looking for a way to show UTF-8 formatted data in a Flex
application. I have a Java app in the backend that generates an xml
file. Some attributes in the file are encoded in UTF-8 (when data
is Japanese or Chinese...). My Flex app is showing box characters.
I have XSLT app that generates html based off this xml file. The
browser i showing the Japanese characters fine.
I am wondering what the trick is to get Flex app show this
data.

It turned out to be my XP that didn't have the the right lang
sets installed. I have two PCs. On one everything showed up fine. I
was able to view arabic, chinese data from xml just fine. On the
other one, same swf didn't show them. There is MS knowledgebase
article on how to enable east asian languages etc. I didn't give it
a try. I am using other pc for my dev now.

Save data to mysql using AS3 + Flash Builder(flex) OR AS3+AMFPHP? or AS3

i just want to confirm with you guys about saving data to mysql using Action script 3.
I am now developing RPG game that user can save data again and again to the MySQL.
I searched on the net and found few solutions:
AS3 alone using URL Loader
AS3 + Flex +Php to save data to mysql
AS3 + AMFPHP to save data to mysql
This make me confused as there are too many options but i do not know which one is better for me
or what are their limitations...

For developing you can use the server (install like any other software), but the Zend framework is nothing more than php files, so all you need to do is upload the framework to you hosting server and all should be well.. You may have to configure a few things, but you should be able to do that yourself.
There's plenty of documentation on installing and configuring Zend on their website.
So, only get the server edition if you don't already have a dev server (on you computer) installed, like Apache. Otherwise, just grab the framework:

Select "minimal package" on the page above to only get the framework (no install). Or grab both and see what each one does but the minimal package is what you need to upload to your hosting server.
As for where Flex/Flash Builder comes in.. FB is the tool you use to create a Flash/Flex application.
Zend, AMFPHP, etc.. is used to communicate with your backend from your application, using RemoteObject

Why would I need to use LiveCycle Data Services in a Flex app?

I cannot figure out what additional functionality is provided by using LiveCycle Data Services in my Flex apps. I cannot get a clear understanding of how using LiveCycle Data Services would benefit my applications. Does someone out there use LiveCycle Data Services? If so, what do you do with it in Flex?

User has to do nothing to get updated information. You push it to their machine when new data is available, like Yahoo finance updated quotes.

You don't want to display one million rows in your datagrid at once. Get a batch of data, if the user scrolls down, get the next batch, etc.

Flex 3.6 bitmap losing data

I am losing the bitmapdata inside of the bitmaps image1 and image2 in the code below, its happening after the first round of ticks,
so the first tick it loads image1 fine, second tick loads image 2 fine, after that the bitmaps have no data in them.

Yes I was able to do this as well by creating a new image. Is there no flag/method for prevening flex from releasing that data?
What I am most concerned about is that flex is releasing the bitmap data on a bitmap that while it is used as the source for an image it is still its own object and entity. It seems sort of arbitrary to in this one case say, oh I am goign to release the objects you are hodling in memory because it is no longer being used in this image (even though the bitmap could be tied up doing other things).

Flex 3.5 data visualization license

Hi,
For Flex 3.5, the data visualization library is freely available, but it's licensing is unclear to me. Do I still need the Flex Builder license if I want to use it in a commercial product?
The legal stuff page (http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/Legal+Stuff#LegalStuf f-LicensesofthevariousFlexSDKpackages) mentions:
"Adobe Add-ons for Open Source Flex SDK – This package contains all of the items that are in the Adobe Flex SDK and not in the Open Source Flex SDK. Downloading this file will allow you to bring the Open Source Flex SDK to parity with the Adobe Flex SDK. This package includes the Adobe Flash Player, Adobe AIR, the advanced font encoding libraries, and the code that allows licensing of things like the Data Visualization components. All of these elements are licensed under the Adobe Flex SDK license."
But I don't understand what that means. Is "code that allows licensing of data visualization" something else than the "data visualization" library?

The Data Visualization components were open sourced, but done so in a somewhat quiet and lazy manner. Nobody ever bothered to update the descriptions on the open source download page to reflect the change and (as far as I can tell) they never bothered to properly repackage it. If you want the source, you also have to go digging through the Flex SVN. Reading the source, you can find all kinds of details that were deliberately undocumented reflecting when Adobe didn't really want you messing with it and/or wanted to give you a reason to pay. No cleanup. Just released as-is.
For me it's been great since I am at last able to finally dive in and understand how the components work, extend them, and can often fix the quirks fairly easily.
