Flex 4, datagrid, checkboxes, and the impossible dream?
I want to build a datagrid that has a column with checkboxes so the user can select a single record or multiple records (for deletion, for exporting, for whatever). But I also want to enable the user to click on anywhere in the row other than the checkbox to open a record for editing. I know how to do one or the other function, but I haven't been smart enough to figure out how to combine the functions with Flex 4. Is it possible?
I see this sort of functionality in my gmail account - I can click on checkboxes to select items for delete *and* I can click on any item to open it for reading, etc. The item doesn't open when I click on the checkbox. I see lots of posts discussing checkboxes in datagrids. I've studied Alex's Flex Closet post at http://blogs.adobe.com/aharui/2010/01/checkboxes_in_datagrid_with_ch.html most closely. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Interesting. For a workaround, does it work for you if you wrap the caselessSortForField() in some curly quotes (ie: use databinding)?

I have what appears to be an impossible dream. I want to go real-time firewire to a DVD burner and get a clean artifact-free copy of my project. I have yet to see a DVD-authoring software (and I've tried a few including pro mastering services) that gives me as good a picture as I get by (a)going firewire to my Sony DSR-11 DVCAM deck and then (b) going out to a consumer-level DVD recorder via S-VIDEO!!!
Because every DVD recorder adds another setup via firewire it bleaches my picture out. The s-video at least preserves the blacks.
This has been about the most frustrating thing I've encountered. Spend all this dough on equipment and be unable to simply burn a clean DVD of your project through firewire.
I don't really even have to have a menu. I produce unnarrated nature DVDs of one-hour length and would really like them to just play when inserted. I've sold quite a few of these over the years--and all with a tacky consumer-grade title menu (never had a complaint but it looks awful).
There must be a better way. Is the MPAA behind all of this nonsense?Thanks for the responses. Believe me I would love to produce a good looking DVD using authoring software. I just haven't found anything that equaled (to date) what I get using that wacky workflow of mine. Did another test since I last posted using bitvice 1.8 with the "DV Color Correction" box unchecked (not the default setting) and I must say it looked much better (the first test was way too bright and looked overexposed--but the audio was killer!). I can see where some skillful tweaking could produce aceptable results--especially in the blacks.
This bitvice test was the first authoring software I've tried in years and I really had my hopes up (it's obvious Compressor is still frustrating people because I see unhappy users regularly complaining about picture quality on that forum). I admittedly may still be traumatized by my experience four years ago trying to use Compressor, other softwares, and two different service agencies to master our four titles for DVD release from our DVCPRO master tapes. The result was a strange shimmery "overlay" effect, blocky artifacting during cross dissolves, trees turned to mush, etc. Believe me the s-video from DVCAM to Sony DVD burner, tacky menu page and all, got the job done WAY better than anything else and in desperation my wife and I used it and we have had consistent praise for our picture quality these past four years.
I'll read the suggested article and try the tips suggested. Is there a good Compression/DVD authoring tutorial or book anyone could recommend? -
Flex Spark DataGrid BUG skipping rows on refresh
I have a small one file example that demonstrates this Flex DataGrid bug.
I tried to report it to Flex bugs and the page timed out.
I am filling a column in a spark datagrid with checkboxes to select that row.
In the header of that column is a checkbox to select ALL the rows.
However, the middle row is not getting refreshed so the display is wrong.
The checkbox looks empty when the backing value is correct.
I have added a print to the code that sets the values in the data and it is setting everyone.
But when I print the isSelected code it is NOT being called on ONE (the middle) visible row.
If I move away or scroll up and down the check box shows the check mark.
So My only conclusion is that refresh has a bug.
Here is the example that demonstrates the problem.
Simply select the header checkbox and the 3rd checkbox does not get updated on refresh.

Hi all,
I have a datagrid with checkbox as item renderers and
checkbox as header renderer in one of its columns.
I created a custom datagrid column extending from datagrid
column.
The visible property of checkbox in a row is based on a
condition.
All works fine if there are only 7 rows in a datagrid,i get
three rows with checkbox and the other without checkbox.
but,if i have more than 7 rows(with vertical scrollbar) i see
all the checkboxes visible which should not happen.

What's the best way to mix AIR 14 and the Flex 3.5 SDK and use new AIR features?
I am returning to development of a popular desktop AIR app, after about 4 years of no code changes. Both AIR and Flex have actively moved forward during my coding absence, and it is time to play catch up.
When last built, the app was using Flex 3.5 and AIR 2.6.
End Goal - I want my app to look good on high density displays
I'd like to keep Flex version at 3.5, but use the newer version of AIR, to render more clearly on high density displays (Retina on OSX and hiDPI on Win8).
The pixel doubling performed by the "compatibility" modes of OSX.Retina or Win8.hiDPI make my app look pretty gross, and the customer base is starting to complain.
While I may eventually switch over to the Apache Flex SDK to bring the application design into the current state, my customer base just doesn't care right now. They like the current app, but want it to work, out-of-the-box, on high density displays.
So I need to limit my scope to changing only the AIR SDK, not the Flex SDK at this time.
Step 1 - Overlaying AIR14 SDK on Flex 3.5
I followed the official generic overlay instructions here, and that worked well enough. I named my hybrid SDK folder "3.5.0.AIR14". I have been able to recompile, run, and verify my app using the hybrid SDK. (my app is compiled and packaged from an ant script, using the Antennae framework. I had already switch SDKs a number of times over the initial course of development, so pointing my project to a new SDK was pretty simple enough.
Step 2 - Updating the app.xml descriptor
This part was also easy. I used the templates\air\descriptor-template.xml as a starting point, customizing the name, app id, and folders. Now my app descriptor is correctly based on the <application xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/application/14.0"> namespace.
Step 3 - Enabling Retina/hiDPI support - Help??
I added <requestedDisplayResolution>high</requestedDisplayResolution> to the <initialWindow> tag of the app descriptor, but that made no difference. The app compiles, installs, and runs, but pixel doubling is still occurring and the app looks gross.
I also tried setting the SWF version to 25, according to the official overlay guide. This proved to be more difficult. The official overlay guide suggests setting the -swf-version=25 compiler option, but that option is not supported by the Flex 3.5 compiler. So all I had to try was using the legacy -target-player=25 compiler option. That setting was accepted by the compiler, and it produced a SWF with byte offset 0x3 == 0x19 (25 dec), so that appears to be right.
But -target-player=25 didn't have any effect either.
Is setting the SWF version even required? Isn't the whole point of using the AIR 14 namespace in the app descriptor the way of telling the compiler "I want to use all features of the AIR 14 release". Why do I need to tell the compiler multiple times to use all the features of the SDK I'm compiling with? It just seems weird to me.
Have I missed a secret setting somewhere?
How can I tell the AIR runtime to simply run as pixel-dense as possible? When the workarounds listed below are performed, my app looks fantastic on high-density displays. But its the pixel scaling that is making everything look bad, and I desperately want to get this fixed.
Workarounds?
On Windows 8+, we are asking our users to enable the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" checkbox on the AIR application shortcut. This works, but is a confusing setting for average users to discover. Most just give up in frustration.
On OSX, we can't even disable Retina mode on a per-application basis, its all or nothing, so that's even worse. SwitchResX will automatically switch resolutions based on the selected app, but that's a pretty clunky (and non-free) workaround too.
Any other workaround ideas are appreciated too.

DougIt took me a while to figure out (without much help from Adobe, grrr!), since some internet writeups were terse and implied somehow that AIR's Retina support (setting your app descriptor's <initialWindow/requestedDisplayResolution> to high) would also work on Windows. They don't.
On OSX, the steps to disable pixel-doubling are:
update your app descriptor to AIR 14
set initialWindow/requestedDisplayResolution = high
compile with SWF version 25 or greater
vector assets, including text, will scale automatically
you'll need to replace your bitmap assets with Retina-quality bitmaps as appropriate
when running on a Retina display, you will see stage.contentsScaleFactor=2. It will be 1 for non-Retina displays.
On Windows, the pixel-doubling kicks in when you have a HiDPI scaling set to about 150% or greater (hiDPI scaling was introduced in Win7). There is no way to detect from within an AIR app when Windows is doing its HiDPI scaling. stage.contentsScaleFactor is always 1, under all configurations.
The only thing you can do for AIR apps on Windows is explicitly disable display scaling (like you have done) and update your app to manually scale all UI elements at runtime (that's really gross and hard, and it what I working on right now).
For my app, I updated our Windows installer to set the registry to disable hiDPI scaling, for all users, just for our app. Here's how you do that:
Key = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
Name = <fullPathToYourExe>
Type = REG_SZ
Value = "~ HIDPIAWARE" (without the quotes, tilde space HIDPIAWARE)
That should be set in the full 64-bit registry, not the Wow32Node registry, even if your app is a 32-bit app (which all AIR apps are). If your installer is a 32-bit app (mine was), you may need to jump through some hoops to have it affect the 64-bit registry hive from a 32-bit process.
If you only want to change the setting for the current user (not all users), the KEY root is HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
If you don't have an explicit installer for your AIR app (ie. if you are deploying from the web via a badge installer), then you're even more messed up, and you will need to tell your users to disable the scaling manually.
I know, it's a total pain. I hope this helps.

Can you change the checkbox value and the caption fontColor in the same checkbox field?
There was a discussion last March where the discussion creator wanted to change the caption text on a checkbox. And the response used a separate check box to change the fontColor in a different text field.
Is it impossible to manipulate the color of the check mark and the caption in the same field?
It would make something I'm doing a lot easier if it was possible.

ChristinaNot sure how you created the field. In the object library under the custom group there is a Current Date field object. It's basically a text field that has some script behind it. Drop it on your form and instead of setting the runtime property, leave the "Calculation Script" radio button selected. It should display the date as M/D/YY, in the format of the selected locale. If you need to use a different format then you need to change the script that's automatically generated behind the scenes (it'll be in the ready:layout event for the field). BTW, selecting Runtime Property also generates a script, it's just different and formats the date as you see it. Either way you need to modify the script to change it.

Unless you are using Spry menus as a learning experience, you should move forward to a menus system that will display properly on the millions of portable devices that won't work with Spry which was deprecated 2 years ago.
Many are using JQuery menus or pure HTML/CSS menus.

Im trying to create a item renderer for a spark datagrid that shows the new value and that it previously was and I am comparing in the set data, the problem I am having is that in teh set data I am frequently getting data from other rows (I know this because of virtual renderders), it there a way round this?

I updated my I-pad 1 to the new sofware for it and now one of my apps (Dream Fish) will not open how to I fix it?
Assuming that there isn't an update for the app that you should download - and you did check correct. .... You can try closing the game in the recents tray and then reboot the iPad. I know you said it will not open, but I also assume that it crashes when you try to open it, and it should still be in the recents tray.
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up. -
i have an iPad 2 and the volume icon is in the middle of my screen and when i try to turn the volume down it just goes back up again and it makes it impossible for me to play games or do anything
Have you tried giving it a reset? Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple let go and let it reboot and see if htat helps.

So you call up an account in email
Account Information is selecgted in the 3-choice menu-bar/button (what is that thing called, anyway? An "inspector"? (frown).
Then check "enable this account"--is selectable
Then Account type: iCloud IMAP or example--this is NOT selectable.
Then "Description field" What's it for, where does it show up, especially if it shows up in other "related" or "integrated" programs?
Alias popup: What's this for? How do you use it. What approaches, strategies, effects might one employ?
Email address is pretty straight forward--but see "user.name" in the "server sub-box/sub-pane" below.
Full Name: What full name? Where does it appear in use? I cannot access it from the pane/panel, so how do I set it, or who/what sets it?
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): OK, here's a popup that isn't congruent with "account type" in the first sub-pane. Or is IMAP only an extroverted function/setting, and (SMTP) is a introverted one (IMAP for outbound, SMTP for inbound)?
Now comes Confusion: Outgoing Mail Server popup menu, which leads you off to a wholenother pane that lets you create new/delete old incoming server names.
There's a Description (what's that for, what does it do? Ditto Server name--I get than's something like smtp.ISP.Com or IMAP.ISP.com). You can set those fields in the + menu Account Information Pane, with its blank text fields. And you can also "double-click to enter" that field in the list itself. Why is that?And then I can select Advanced, and get another batch of checkboxes, fields, and popups.
But I left the Account Information pane before asking, What is this Thread-Lock Stitching Certificate thing? (Or is that Transport Layer Secrecy Sertificate, what? None is displaying now, but if I popup what's beneath it a humongously long "ID" string, which I take to be, what, my Apple ID? A public key/ provate key encryption string/key? How do I use it if I'm trying to keep the National Surveillance Agency from eavesdropping, "in the clear," my every blessed keystroke, "phrase-stroke" (think VoIP), and if I use the thing, can the president just press a button and send a drone to blow me off the planet (and anyone near me at the time--always great fun for friends and family)?
And never mind router and FiOS, etc., modem settings. and the Network settings outside of email....
I guess my bottom line is, the user is presented with a rich smorgasbord of significant choices by all of the panes and panels, etc., on the mac, iMac, iPad-Phone-Watch real soon now, mac pro, macbook pro, etc. But the specific description of the proper use of these description/instruction on their use and function is impoverished. I think manuals used to handle some of these issues. But where are the manuals? Or am I just so overwhelmed by the complexity of what was once a simple user interface that I can't see pointers (in light grey type on lighter grey backgrounds--what the heck is wrong with black type, I'd like to know!) staring me in the phiz. I have one iPhone 8GB. After making un upgrade of iTunes and software of iPhone, it's impossible to use it. There's no service! doesn't acept PIN code! it only makes emergency calls and the image in the iPhone is the sign to connect to iTunes. What can i do to solve it?
Where are you and where did you get the phone. This sounds like a classic symptom of someone who bought an iPhone that originated in the U.S. which was then hacked so it would run on a carrier network other than AT&T... Then, when updating the phone, it becare re-locked to AT&T.
If that's what happened, you now own a paperweight. AT&T will NOT unlock them for any reason.
If this isn't the case, please clarify where you are, what carrier you have and where you got the phone so we can begin troubleshooting. -
The Elements 12 Mac disk works fine - I also have a Dell, and the Windows disk will not run at all, sounds like it's grinding, and is almost impossible to remove from the hard drive. I cannot find any place to tell me who to CALL to ask for a replacement!

You can use a download instead of the disk as an alternative: Adobe - Download free trial version Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 | Adobe you can license with your serial
Please test the disk in another windows machine to check if it's caused by the drive or the disk. If you tested with 2 drives please start a support case, i assume Adobe will only provide downloads at this point. They are the same as the trials. If you still need a disk you can burn the trial to a disk as a backup disk. Good luck! -
i received an error message "iTunes requires 64-bit mode" says to go into my iTunes application and 'uncheck' the 'open in 32-bit mode' checkbox - i went into the application and the box was not checked anyway so why am i getting this prompt? Never happened before. yesterday did the sofware update for maverick.
Thank you for your response, Chris. But I'm afraid I have to disagree. There are native 64 bit versions of iTunes available for OSX and Windows.
In a 64 Bit Windows environment native 64 Bit Applications install the DLL's in a directory called "Program Files" and a directory called "Program Files (x86)" (32 Bit applications only use the ladder).
iTunes 9 is consistent with this behavior - and it identified itself to the system as a 64 bit application (meaning it's process appears without a "*32" tag on it). -
To run iTunes in 64-bit mode, select the iTunes application in the Finder, choose the “Get Info” command in the File menu, and uncheck the “Open in 32-bit mode” checkbox in the iTunes Info window. but i doesn't have the tick thing plus i redownloaded it again and same message comes up
Have you disclosed the "General" brick in the "Info" panel? Click the disclosure triangle to the left of "General":
