The impossible dream?

I have what appears to be an impossible dream. I want to go real-time firewire to a DVD burner and get a clean artifact-free copy of my project. I have yet to see a DVD-authoring software (and I've tried a few including pro mastering services) that gives me as good a picture as I get by (a)going firewire to my Sony DSR-11 DVCAM deck and then (b) going out to a consumer-level DVD recorder via S-VIDEO!!!
Because every DVD recorder adds another setup via firewire it bleaches my picture out. The s-video at least preserves the blacks.
This has been about the most frustrating thing I've encountered. Spend all this dough on equipment and be unable to simply burn a clean DVD of your project through firewire.
I don't really even have to have a menu. I produce unnarrated nature DVDs of one-hour length and would really like them to just play when inserted. I've sold quite a few of these over the years--and all with a tacky consumer-grade title menu (never had a complaint but it looks awful).
There must be a better way. Is the MPAA behind all of this nonsense?

Thanks for the responses. Believe me I would love to produce a good looking DVD using authoring software. I just haven't found anything that equaled (to date) what I get using that wacky workflow of mine. Did another test since I last posted using bitvice 1.8 with the "DV Color Correction" box unchecked (not the default setting) and I must say it looked much better (the first test was way too bright and looked overexposed--but the audio was killer!). I can see where some skillful tweaking could produce aceptable results--especially in the blacks.
This bitvice test was the first authoring software I've tried in years and I really had my hopes up (it's obvious Compressor is still frustrating people because I see unhappy users regularly complaining about picture quality on that forum). I admittedly may still be traumatized by my experience four years ago trying to use Compressor, other softwares, and two different service agencies to master our four titles for DVD release from our DVCPRO master tapes. The result was a strange shimmery "overlay" effect, blocky artifacting during cross dissolves, trees turned to mush, etc. Believe me the s-video from DVCAM to Sony DVD burner, tacky menu page and all, got the job done WAY better than anything else and in desperation my wife and I used it and we have had consistent praise for our picture quality these past four years.
I'll read the suggested article and try the tips suggested. Is there a good Compression/DVD authoring tutorial or book anyone could recommend?

Flex 4, datagrid, checkboxes, and the impossible dream?

I want to build a datagrid that has a column with checkboxes so the user can select a single record or multiple records (for deletion, for exporting, for whatever). But I also want to enable the user to click on anywhere in the row other than the checkbox to open a record for editing. I know how to do one or the other function, but I haven't been smart enough to figure out how to combine the functions with Flex 4. Is it possible?
I see this sort of functionality in my gmail account - I can click on checkboxes to select items for delete *and* I can click on any item to open it for reading, etc. The item doesn't open when I click on the checkbox. I see lots of posts discussing checkboxes in datagrids. I've studied Alex's Flex Closet post at http://blogs.adobe.com/aharui/2010/01/checkboxes_in_datagrid_with_ch.html most closely. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Interesting. For a workaround, does it work for you if you wrap the caselessSortForField() in some curly quotes (ie: use databinding)?

Assuming that there isn't an update for the app that you should download - and you did check correct. .... You can try closing the game in the recents tray and then reboot the iPad. I know you said it will not open, but I also assume that it crashes when you try to open it, and it should still be in the recents tray.
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Sleeping and an iMac - am I asking the impossible?

I have an i5 27" iMac and have had for a couple of years, but have been getting a bit paranoid about energy consumption in the house and had a look at the power usage when it sleeps, and when it's active.
I've found that when active, it's using about 120w, if I have energy saving configured to put the computer & display to sleep after x minutes, it then consumes 80w. HOWEVER, if I put it to sleep using the Sleep on the menu, it is a much more efficient sleep and uses only 11w.
So my question is, is it supposed to sleep "properly" when configured to sleep in the energy settings, or is this almost-perfect sleep only meant to be attainable by the Sleep menu (and by scheduled sleep also, that seems to work properly).
I've spent a few hours trying everything to get it to fully sleep on the inactivity timer but all to no avail. I've unplugged all USB devices, just leaving keyboard & BT magic mouse, I've tried starting in safe mode with the left shift key held down, no joy there. I've cleared the "wake for network access" checkbox. Also had a play with pmset, but couldn't get it to do anything better and I'm starting to feel like I'm chasing something impossible here.
I installed narcolepsy, but it insisted on shutting me down every 5 minutes regardless of whether it was in use. I also tried PowerSleep, but it would go to sleep even if iTunes was playing, so no dice there as I permanently have iTunes loaded and don't want it sleeping when I'm playing out to my Airport Express units.
I've read a lot of posts on this, but no one seems to say whether or not the full-sleep should be achievable through the Energy Saver timers and I'm starting to think it's not possible...

You are positive? Absolute, silent sleep? On the Energy Saver timer? Ok... Wow... maybe this is possible then.
No web browser running - I've tried a total clean start (left-shift held down), no applications running, set the sleep timer for 1 minute display and 1 minute computer sleep... waited... display dimmed after 30s, display then went off, that was it, as 'asleep' as it gets (without picking 'Sleep' off the menu).
Hmm confused now... is there no way of debugging this issue logically? I don't know what else to try, everything is unplugged, machine is cleanly started... are you using Bluetooth?

Synching Blackberry and Address Book which just works: impossible dream?

I've got a Blackberry 8200g which synchs well with my office Lotus Notes setup. I'd like to be able to synch the office contacts book (but not email) with my home Mac's Address Book, with synching of Calendar a bonus, but not crucial.
PocketMac Synchmanager kept bringing over only some information, and only in one direction (i.e. not onto the work computer), and seemed to forget some of the information it had brought over previously.
Missing Synch seems to require me to turn off wireless synchronisation every time I want to synch the mac with the blackberry.
Just wondered if it was feasible to find a piece of software that just works - these shouldn't be complex databases to try and mesh - without tweaks etc and without costing the earth.
Any ideas from wiser folks who've been down this road already?

I want the impossible?

Hey folks. I have my iTunes library on our main, intel imac. I have an old, G3 ibook in the bedroom hooked up to a pretty decent set of speakers. It is currently running iTunes 6, as the specs for iTunes 7 requires OS X 4 Panther. The iMac and all of my music shows up in the sources pane on the iBook and just mocks me, stating it requires a better version of iTunes (iTunes 7?). Is there any solution that does not require an upgrade to Panther so I can run iTunes 7?
I am between jobs, so dropping a hundred or more for a copy of Panther just is not in the cards for now.....

Sorry, but there's no way to get iTunes 7.x running on Mac OS X 10.2, and if you are sharing via iTunes 7.x on your iMac, an earlier version of iTunes will not work with it. If you shop around, such as on eBay, you may be able to find a retail copy of 10.3 for not much money (there's at least one "buy it now" price of under $40 with bids much lower. If you go that route, make sure you get a retail copy of 10.3, not the install disks from some other model of Mac.

Doing the impossible? Finding rogues from the wired side

Wondering if anyone has found a valid tool (beyond the sourceforge APTools kind of stuff) to assist in finding APs by culling through the ARP tables on routers etc... brutal stuff here I know. Also- anything in a wireless frame/packets common to all APs (all vendors as part of 802.11) that can be filtered on at the router to possibly block traffic from rogue APs? I think not, but I'm scratchin at anything here...

The process takes place as follows:
1. A client with a LEAP profile attempts to associate to a access point A.
2. Access point A does not handle LEAP authentication successfully, perhaps because the access point does not understand LEAP or cannot communicate to a trusted LEAP authentication server.
3. The client records the MAC address for access point A and the reason why the association failed.
4. The client associates successfully to access point B.
5. The client sends the MAC address of access point A and the reason code for the failure to access pont B.
6. Access point B logs the failure in the system log.

I am about to embark on my university dissertation to produce a collaborative interactive learning environment which sounds hard and I want to know if its possible to produce such a application in Java. In more detail -
I want to produce a client/server application which lets clients act as avatars (actors) inside a virtual Java 3D scene which will be seen by all the clients so can see their avatar view point move. This scene will be populated by a 3d max loader which I know it�s possible.
Hope it makes sense!
Any suggestions/ideas of how I could do possibly do this would be great!

programming I haven't done before.I have actually worked on an application VERY similar to this. I was modeling machines in a virtual shop floor, the scene was being completely generated on the client computers, with the only data sent over the network was the differences between the scenes. It also had a chat facility.
The main difference with what I was doing was that there were no avatars. The clients were aware of changes to the environment, but not other users in the environment.
I was using HTTP servlets for my communication, and it made sense for the type of data I was sending. You might consider sending simple explanations of what has changes, and allow the client side to construct the changes that will be needed to the scene graph. Or RMI should work too.
I will continue to monitor this thread, if you wish to post any more questions. I am quite familiar with Java3D, so I may be able to help you with that aspect of the program.
By the way, the Java3D tutorial provided by sun is pretty basic, and won't be enough to help you do this project. Personally, I have yet to find a decent tutorial that gets into advanced Java3D practices. The best way to get familiar with the package is to ask other programmers. I wouldn't spend TOO much time googling for answers, because there aren't many other there for Java3D. As a side note, this forum does have a Java3D subject you can post questions to.

Am I trying to do the impossible with LiveCycle?

As my name states, I am such a Novice at creating forms using Live Cycle, but enjoy the challenge. I am stumped right now. I have a form that needs 3 signatures on it, but before even getting to that point, when I test the form, the first signature does not work. I get the error message "Method:'sign' cannot be called because doing so would violate this document's permission settings", so you can't sign it. How the form will work, the person requesting will sign in the first signature box, then use the Submit to Supervisor button (that goes to my email address), then I will approve and sign the form (in the second signature box), then send the form back to the requestor who has to complete a section after the event, then sign a second time. Is this even doable or do I have to many signatures on one page. Your assistance would be most appreciated!

Linc is right - a dedicated router will be much more reliable than just using an older Mac.
Internet sharing from the G5 is a fine option short-term (if your router dies one night after stores have closed and you need internet access on all devices), but purchasing a router is a better option.
If you still want to get internet sharing working, I can work with you to see if we can sort this out.

It's not a problem with the Sony. It works with other iPods and is brand new. No other performance issues with my iPod. Any advice greatly appreciated.

QT screen too large to resize! The impossible situation...

On the basic Quicktime 7 (not Pro), I have received a movie larger than my 17" widescreen mac. This leads to an interesting situation: I can't access the controls and I can't accress the resizing zone of the screen in the bottom right corner because both of them are off the visible screen... any idea on how to resize the window if one is not able to move the screen around to access the bottom?

Can your source do True DD or DTS output. If so check your SPDIF input settings try setting it to Dolbydigital/DTS SPDIF-Inpute Decode.
Try it with your DD/DTS driver decode on or off.
If that doesn't work try setting your SPDIF input settings to SPDIF bypass with you DD/DTS driver Decode on.
Lastly if you have an external decoder built into your speakers have your DD/DTS?decode off (Dolby Digital/DTS bitstream out) and your SPDIF input setting set to SPDIF bypass.
Check your devices settings try difrent settings like PCM out or AC3 digital out.

Is it impossible to use my iPod with my Mac at home and my PC at work?

I've been using my iPod nano with my MacBook at home for over a year without incident (more or less). I have a PC desktop at work, and I'd like to be able to use my iPod here as well -- is that the impossible dream? I'd rather not have to reformat the iPod or restore it and lose all my files, but I can do that if it'll help me to use the iPod in both places. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats): How to determine your iPod's disk format
Macs can read Windows drives so you could restore and format the iPod on a PC. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac. One proviso is that Apple currently only fully supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac, in other words all future software updates for the iPod would have to be carried out in Windows to maintain the formatting. Alternatively there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, this is one for instance gets good reviews. It's a commercial program so you'll have to purchase a license to use it: XPlay 2
