Flex Builder Design View programmatic skinning

I am writing programmatic skins, by extending
ProgrammaticSkin class. If i apply these skins to mx:Button, i can
see the skin in Flex Builder design view. But when i style my
custom component with programmatic skins, Flex Builder design view
does not show the skin, though the skin is applied when i run the
application. Is there a way for me to write my custom classes
(class Node extends UIComponent), and apply skins, so that i can
see the skins in Flex Builder design view.

Actually I found the answer to my question. You can find it
in my blog.

• Custom Components and Properties in Flex Builder Design View

How do I create a custom component with custom properties
that renders well in Flex Builder design view?
This is a simple HelloWorld example of what I am trying
below. Here is the HelloWorld.mxml file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Canvas xmlns:mx="
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
width="500" height="500">
<mx:Script><![CDATA[
[Bindable]
public var message:String;
]]></mx:Script>
<mx:Label x="100" y="100" text="{message}" />
</mx:Canvas>
And then when I use it in another mxml file, the design view
does not show the label with the 'Hello World' value - instead it
just shows {message} in design view where the label is located.
When I run it as a compiled app in flash, the 'Hello World' is
displayed correctly:
-- HelloWorldTest.mxml --
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Canvas xmlns:mx="
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
xmlns:views="mypackage.*" width="500" height="500">
<views:SimpleLine message="Hello World."/>
</mx:Canvas>

design view does not do any variable assignments or function
evaluations, so you won't be able to see it even if you don't use a
custom component.

• Sometimes the Flex Builder design window crashes

Sometimes the Flex Builder design window crashes in that when
you click on components, you don't see the usual outline transform
box out side the component you clicked on. Also things like the
toggle button bar doesn't switch the viewstack. I have no errors or
warnings in the problems windows.
Any ways round this?

• Flash Builder Design view

Hi all,
I have also an issue when trying to view a component in the Flash Builder 4 Design View (running on Eclipse 3.5 SP-2).
The design view does not open and I get an error message. When I look into the Eclipse "Error Log" view I see the following stack trace and session data as shown below...
I appreciate any hint what is going wrong here...

Today I try to use a standalone version, it‘s running good.
So, it may tell us that the problem may be only happen in the situation that using a plugin version FB4 and running on win 7.
If you just need flex and do not use j2ee, I suggest you using a standalone FB.

• Osmf sample with flex builder-design puzzle

Good Day,everyone!
It is my first time here.^_^
My puzzle:
I'm going to modify the design stytle of the OSMF example code with the flex builder 3,
but the former design frame cann't be viewed with the "design" tools. The warning indicates that
"Design mode:cann't load MediaPlayer.swc(reason:Error:Load Verify).It may require classes(such as Adobe AIR components)that are not supported by design mode."
I have checked everyting I can, and attampted so many ways,but it doesn't work.
Expecting for your suggestion!
Thanks a lot!
Good Luck!

Thanks for your immediate responding!
I have focused on the DynamicStreamingSample.
I am using the osmf_source_6.
My Flex Builder version is the latest, and the sdk is 3.4.
When I imported the project, I have recompiled the MediaFramework and MediaPlayer project. Meantime, I added the new .swc file in
the BuildPath. Is everything all right?
Excuse me?When I unzip the zip file of the source, I find the MediaFramework.swc in the directory the same as other directores such as
apps,docs,frame and so on.
Why is the MediaFramework.swc file here? Is it different from the .swc which is compiled with the MediaFramework project?
Expecting for your news!
Good day!

• Flash Builder - Design View - can't resize/move objects anymore.

So, I've downloaded the 60 day trial of Flash Builder 4. I've been working with it for about 2 days and everything has been going fine. However, for some unknown reason, my design view panel just suddenly stopped working properly. I see the components (and the gray outlines of my containers) I'm working with, but when I try to click on them, I do not get that blue resizing outline with the handles. I see the properties panel change when I click different components, but I get no outline. So, I can no longer resize in this view. I also can't move components/containers around. I can only click on them and watch the properties panel change. I do not believe I've hit any sort of option in the menus. I closed the application and started it up again with the same result. I even rebooted my machine and tried again. As of right now, this problem seems to be permanent. Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

I would recommend you post on the Flash Builder forum: http://forums.adobe.com/community/flash_builder

• Flex builder design tab

hi, i am having this problem of not able to use the design

as textarea etc. I used to be able to use the design tab to
visually design the layout, but suddenly i cant anymore.
the error given was.. "flex this component is based on
application, which is not a visual component. switch to source mode
to edit it."
how can i make use of the design tab again??

what i last did was to update the flex sdk. anyway i 'solved'

• Widget creation on Flex builder and related problems - need some help

Hi all.
I am trying to create a widget like application and it seems
I have made a mistake. As you know, desktop widgets are like small
stickers, they do not appear on taskbar and can be hidden or
docked.
The problem is that I created an AIR application using Flex
Builder 3 Beta and now I cannot find how to make that application
behave like custom-shaped window. My app appears on Windows taskbar
and I don't want it. When I drag the window (which is a custom
shape) it shows that nasty dragging rectangle around it.
As far as I found out (and tried it) I need to use cod like:
var initOptions:NativeWindowInitOptions = new
NativeWindowInitOptions();
initOptions.systemChrome = NativeWindowSystemChrome.NONE;
initOptions.type = NativeWindowType.UTILITY;
to hide my window from the taskbar. But it seems I cannot use
such a code for class mx:Application. Or can I (would be grateful
for some idea)?
The main question is:
if I want to migrate my app to that NativeWindow based
solution - then NativeWindow is not an mx class and I cannot find
how I will use Flex Builder Design mode to arrange my GUI elements.
Is it somehow possible to wrap my mx:Application inside
NativeWindow and do not have to migrate the design from mxml files
to pure ActionScript?
The second issue - if I want to use some kind of subforms -
like widget settings window - when I move that window with the
mouse, it is being clipped to the region of my Application. Does
that again mean that I need to use NativeWindow for creating such a
"Widget settings" dialog window?
Thanks for any ideas (and especially for useful links and
examples :-) )

• Design view not working after importing project from Flex Builder

After importing a project from Flex Builder to Flash Builder I am no longer able to see anything in the design view. I am using the flex 4.5 sdk.
Any idea how I can get this design view working? I heard it could have something to do with the metadata directory but am slightly lost here?...
Adam

Could you please provide more information as to what exactly are you importing. Also does Design View not lauch at all or does it give errors. Would it be possible for you to share the logs.
Meanwhile you can try cleaning the workspace and importing again to see if that solves the issue.

• What is the replacement for design view in in flex builder 4.7 for cs extension builder?

Because design view is not available in flash builder than what is the use of extension builder in UI designing now we have to do design UI with xml which is very time consuming and boring if there is any replacemnt for it than please help me .1 more thing i want to know is that when i make new default project in extension builder(flash builder 4.6) than it also not able to load design mode errror is
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.6\eclipse\plugins\com.adobe.cside.libsinstaller_2.0.0.4-33034\archive\cslibs\2.0\4.5\re lease\apedelta.swc- not respondingSWC file failed to load. Any component dependent on this SWC file will not be displayed in the Design Mode.The SWC may have failed to load because of:
* Incompatible definitions caused by usage of a different SDK version
* Missing referred class definitions

I have researched this quite considerably and my understanding is that Adobe have no intention of supporting Design View any more for Extension Builder. In my opinion a very disappointing decision and one that is hard to comprehend.
The best workaround I can find is to create the majority of your design in a parallel, non Extension Builder, project and then convert/import your design into your Extension. This is by no means as satisfactory as having Design View for the Extension you are writing but it is better than simply creating your layout by guess work/trial and error.
Although this has not been announced by Adobe, I have a suspicion that the reason they have decided not to put any further resources into fixing Design View is that Extension Builder as we know it is going to be abandoned soon, probably replaced with an HTML5/JavaScript method of building extensions. My concern with this is that, other than wanting reassurances that there will be backward compatibility support for old extensions, There will not be a way of compiling an extension in a way that prevents people from seeing your code.
This is all speculation and I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. Hope this has helped.

• Custom Canvas Shape visible in design view of flex builder

I have a library which has custom controls. I have a BubbleCanvas class with the following constructor.
super();
var style:CSSStyleDeclaration;
this.setStyle("backgroundImage", canvasBackground);
this.setStyle("backgroundSize", "100%");
var btnSave:LinkButton = new LinkButton();
style = new CSSStyleDeclaration();
style.setStyle("horizontalCenter", 0);
style.setStyle("bottom", 20);
btnSave.label = "save";
btnSave.styleDeclaration = style;
btnSave.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnSave_Click);
this.addChild(btnSave);
var btnClose:LinkButton = new LinkButton();
style = new CSSStyleDeclaration();
style.setStyle("horizontalCenter", 0);
style.setStyle("top", 5);
btnClose.label = "close";
btnClose.styleDeclaration = style;
btnClose.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnClose_Click);
this.addChild(btnClose);
this.addEventListener(FlexEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE, BubbleForm_CreationComplete);
this.width = 600;
this.height = 300;
canvasBackground is a png image with transparency so that the form is shaped like a
conversation bubble.
Now at run time everything works great, what I would like is to have the control
look like a conversation bubble in the design view of flex.
Oh I only want actionscript code, since the flex sdk controls are all
actionscript. This is partly acedemic for me.
Thanks,
Greg

> The content is there, but not the 'look' we have created.
PS how are you referencing the CSS styles? Don’t forget in design view it DW and Contribute will not run any dynamic variables i.e. #stylePath#/this.css you have to use absolute paths. This is sometimes a common issue in deisgn view.

• Flex Builder 3 Design View Not Working

For some reason, the Design view has stopped working. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling twice with no luck restoring it. All I see is a blank page when switching from Source to Design view. Source view works fine.
Any help would be appreciated!

if your using the mozilla browser then close the mozilla browser. then try the design view .you will see the design view.
i dont know wat is the reason behind this but i was having the same problem then i started running my application on IE dont open the mozilla browser only.
to change the the default browser go to Windows->preperances->general->web browser and choose the browser and say ok.
