Floppy Drive Controller Initialization Problem

Hi Guys,
Just took my shiny new K7N2 Delta Motherboard out its bag, Connected it up and powered up. Suprisingly enough thats where my problems started.
It is hanging on the Floppy drive Controller Initialization sequence. Is it RMA time or is there a way round this?

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum "Initializing Floppy Drive Controller" problem

When I finished building my system a couple days ago I started it up and found some problems:
First of all I got a long beep and one or two (not really clear) short beeps (this can be a video issue but also a mainboard issue (?)), the computer continues to start up and ends without any screen on my monitor (it switches to standby mode) and the famous(?) "Initializing Floppy Drive Controller" LED combination.
This is what I tried so far:
-1- clean startup (cpu, 1 stick of memory, videocard) reinstalled all components
    -2- boot without floppy drive
    -3- clear CMOS
-4- tried different memory and different slots
-5- disabled all case usb and firewire options
I am using a PS/2 Keyboard but it seems to work because when I hit the numlock key the green LED comes on.
What should be my next step?

    Thanks for your reply!
    I thought this was enough:

  • P35 Platinum ... Initializing Floppy Drive Controller ?? (Wont Boot)

    Hi all
I have built a new comp for someone who wants reliability so i choose to go Platinum, but ... i cant make it boot.
It wont even show ANYTHING on the screen (tried the vga in both Pci-e 16x just in case i was dumb enough lol) the boot "procces" stops with the Status leds showing:
    4) Green
    3) Green
    2) RED
    1) Green
According to the user guide it says:
    Initializing Floppy Drive Controller.
This will initialize floppy drive and controller.
And i dont even have a floppy
Well as the problem persisted i removed EVERYTHING from the motherboard
    now i left:
    -Mother
    -Processor
    -Memory
    -VGA
    -PSU
And thats it. Let me tell you all the things i tried:
-Bios reset (with the little red button)
    -Plug only necesary things
-Taking off the battery and replacing it (and went back to the "original")
-Tried different connectors just in case it was the PSU (i really dont think so)
    -Tried different memory stick/s.
And well, thats all i think, half of this i did it with the mother in the case, and re-did all the list with the moter OUTSIDE the case. Can anybody help me ??
I guess is a BIOS problem, as i readed in another post (yeah used search first xD) but the only guy who could solve the problem was flashing the bios, but i cant even see a word on the screen, is it possible to flash the bios in my condition ??
    The specs now:
    Intel C2D E4500
    MSI P35 PLATINUM
2x1Gb (or 1x1gb, tried single sticks as well) OCZ DDR2 667mhz (and tried also with generic "titan" memory at 800mhz, does not change anything)
    Gigabyte 8400GS
    POWERCOOLER PS-500 SS PSU
AFAIK i have more than enough to make this boot, but well ... you know
Thanks in advance, i tried to give all details possible, in 2 days ill go to RMA if i cant make it work, but i would like give it a try, who knows
EDIT: my english sucks really bad, forgive me !!
EDIT2: Forgot to add !! when i remove the VGA the motherboard DOES the "VGA ERROR BEEP" and the leds are in the correct combination for VGA ERROR ... so i guess processor works and ram too (both OCZ and generic), if one of these fails then it wont make any sound, m i wrong ??

    ITS ALIVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, to be honest, i dont know what it really was but tried 2 things:
First i followed step by step and word by word the "clearing CMOS" guide (this mobo has a button and not a juper, so i pressed the button like 2 minutes to be REALLY sure xD), then i realized that it was not doing the "beeps" anymore, but the screen was black like before.
SOOOOOOOOOOOO THEEEEEEEEN ... (shoot me in the head for this) i unplugged the video and keyboard from the KVM switch (could THIS be the problem ?? i used it wit hundreds of computers and never gave me prblems before  ??? ??? ???) and plugged the cables directly and now its alive !!!
    THANKS !!  :D :D :D :D :D
    One last thing !!
Do you recommend me to upgrade the BIOS ?? the board always did a "false boot" then starts normally, i readed it was some "hardware checking" feature, its that true or its totally useless ??
THANKKKKKKKKKKKKKKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSSS =) (im so damn happy now LOL)

  • Floppy drive controller

I recently built a computer, and it has a problem booting windows xp, i turn it on, it gets past all the bios and raid stuff, then it gets to where windows should boot, and just sits still. I hit the restart button and it goes through the bios/raid stuff again, bringing up an error saying "windows was shut down improperly..." and allows me to choose safe mode/safe mode with network/safe mode with console/last good config/normal boot. I choose normal and it goes to windows.
Another problem is when i try installing older games like worms armageddon, or running spybot search and destroy or ad aware, it brings up a "windows - no disk" error, but it doesnt specify a drive. I disabled a majority of the parts and slowly enabled them, which finally showed the floppy drive controller was the device causing the problem. So i was wondering if these two problems could be connected to the floppy drive controller issue?

  • Floppy drive controller failure.

I have a MS-6529 845 Pro motherboard, which I installed approximately one year ago.  I was in the process of replacing the C: drive in the computer, when I rebooted the computer with the startup disk in the floppy drive to format the new hard drive, the floppy drive will not responed on bootup.  I have checked the D-LED indication and the light indication stops at the point where the floppy drive and the controller should initialize. I have replaced the floppy drive and the cable between the drive and the motherboard connection.  I have checked the BIOS and it indicates a 3-1/2 floppy drive is setup and enabled.  Has the floppy drive controller on the motherboard failed and do I have to replace the Motherboard or is there another option (a flopply drive controller card can be added).

I find it a bit hard to belive the floppy controller got damaged simply by installing a new HDD so I an trying to see if there is a reason for this situation.
I am not aware of any external FDD controllers, only USB floppies ment for laptops, but they are expensive and the board should still be under warrenty so I see no reason to buy one.

  • [K8N Neo2] "initializing floppy drive controller"

    Hi,
My mobo is always staying at this step.
I can't access to bios since this problem
I tried clearmos, changed graphic card, turn off hard drive and CDROM and floppy.
What's happen ? Is my mobo dead ?
    Thx.

  • K8N Neo4-F "Initializing Floppy Drive Controller" problem

    Hello there,
I read the other posts on this topic but the problem is that I dont even get as far as the BIOS.
I get to that looks a lot like something from a grfx card.
And then nothing. Initially I did not have the a FD connected but it is the same with it.

My previous mobo crashed and after some misunderstandings 2,3,4 and 5 are new and the others are old stuff.
Any help appreciated. I can probably get model numbers from the rest of the components. Let me know if you need it (just did not think it was relevant and yes I am quite lazy)

Have you tried another power supply?  Most 350 watt power supplies do not produce enough 12volt power to run Athlon 64 processor based systems.
I was afraid of this ... the previous processor was an Athlon 64 2800+ but an AGP gfx card. might be the problem ... could anyone confirm this before I buy a new power supply?

  • K7T board won't read cd or floppy drives

I have a K7T Turbo2 board.  It's been working fine for quite some time.  Has 2 cd drives, and 1 hard drive.  It reads the hard drive just fine and loads up ok.  On boot I'm getting a "Floppy Disk(s) fail (40)" error message.  It recognizes all of the drives but it won't access either cd or floppy drive.  I've tried every conceivable cable option, changed cables, reseated all of the cables and also reset the bios options.  I've also deleted and reinstalled all the ide devices and controllers.  Any ideas???  Seems like something just went away on the motherboard.
    Thanks for any suggestions.....

Wow! Changing PSU in four minutes! A local PC mag. has a competition for the quickest assembly of a computer system; any thoughts of entering?  I find it a little odd that boot-up time is shortened by better Power Supply Unit.
I had one handy and the case was open!  I was surprised on boot time but there was a definite difference.
In Device Manager check settings for the CD-drives. If they are set for DMA, disable. Reboot.
Currently set PIO---but had already tried this.
Next step would be to remove all not working units from Device Manager. Shut down. Unplug and clear CMOS. Wait 30 seconds or so, then restart.
Did this also.  The system recognizes the devices and always has---they just can't be used to transfer any data.  Drives open---they show up in device manager as ok---they show up in Windows----just can't read any data from them.
If you don't normally use floppys you could disable floppy control and floppy seek in BIOS I believe.
Floppy drive controller has been disabled and cables unplugged without success.
You have tried cable moving etc, haven't you.
Every possible combination and new cables---also tried combinations of master and slave for the cd drives--nothing worked.
    Ntkernl OK?
Not sure--not getting any error messages--how can it be checked???

  • Floppy drive problem in Win2000 and older

    Hi,
I have a problem with floppy. Does'n regonize where problem is (Driver, Controller,BIOS...).
    Configuration:
Intel Pentium 4 HT 2,8GHz Prescott (some models have 3,0GHz Prescott)
    MSI 865PE Neo2 (MS-6728 Ver:2)
2x256MB DDR400 Kingstone working in DualChannel mode
    GeForce 4 MX 440 with AGP 8x

HDD Western Digital Caviar WD800JB or Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 60GB
Case with AXT Power Supply 300W (some models have Fortron)
    Symptoms:
    - Floppy read disks without problems on any OS
    - Floppy can't write any data to disks on Win2000, Win98, SuSE91
    - Floppy writing data without problem if you have WinXP-SP1 and SP2
    - Data writed on any OS without WinXP making disk unusable (format on WinXP will make disk useless)
    * Writing data - Create folder, copy files, format disk
    Tested without resolution problem:
    - Change disk is irelevant
    - Change Floppy Drive is irelevant
    - Change floppy data cable is irelevant
    - Using WinXP drivers for FDD and LPC Controller in Win2000 does'n work
    - Update OS (without XP) does'n help
    - Updating BIOS does'n help

Sorry, all periferials are set to enabled with defined ports etc.
Yea, trying move floppy between working pc and this crazy machines and its indepedent on any floppy drive, floppy disk and fdc cable... This is true...
When you boot another system, floppy is connected, reading is ok. But when you try to write anything, system report "Incorrect parameter" and that's all...
I managing network with Win2K/XP/98/Suse91/HP-UX10 with exchange/oracle and now more resolution of this type of problem, but this problem is absolutly independence on anything...
And with OS, this problem we have about 2 moths ago. Before I post it here, try  install licenced systems on this pc. Trying win2000 (on this system we found the problem) after then try win98, suse91 and oldest msdos 6.22. No one of this systems can work. But last suggestion, Prescott procesor made in system some differet. Next week we try change processor type Prescott to Northwood. Some people say its work...
I post it new info, when we have new resolution of this (i think incredible) change processor.
    To your
Thanx lot for your resolutions.... Anything we try........

  • K8N Neo Platinum: Floppy drive problem

    Hi,
I can not get the motherboard to detect the floppy drive. As soon as I turn on the computer, the LED light on the floppy drive is on. I made sure that "1.44M, 3.5in" is selected in "Standard CMOS Features." I made sure floppy is NOT selected as a boot device. Also, made sure "Seek Floppy" is disabled. I tried using the supplied rounded floppy cable and used my old cable. I swapped the connection of the cable also. I also checked the connector pins to make sure they are not bent. Nother seems to work. The floppy is simply not detected.
    Please help!!!
    My system configuration is:
MSI K8N Neo Platinum, BIOS: 1.3
LSI Logic Ultra 320 SCSI controller
    eVGA 6800 GT
    A64 3200+
    512MB Samsung memory
    SoundBlaster Live!
Plextor CDRW (don't remember the model number)
Toshiba DVD-ROM (dont' remember the model number)
    Fujitsure 15K RPM SCSI HDD
    Antec True380 power supply
    Thanks.
    Henry

You did say you'd swapped the cable, right? Have you tried turning the connector upside down at the floppy drive end?
I had a problem with the floppy light being on all the time and the drive not being detected. It turned out the connector in the back of the floppy drive was upside down! I was sure I had it the right way up the first time so it's easily done!

  • Floppy Drive problems

I am using the MSI 648 MAX-L mboard with an Intel Celeron 2.0 GHZ, also the same board with a P4 2.4 GHZ CPU. On both, I am having errors and problems with the Floppy Drive and the Floppy controller. Either it does not see disks, or gives me a controller error when I access the drive. Is there a known issue with certain BIOS versions, or something, or do I just have some bad drives?

Check installation of drive in case. I tried allsorts, - turned out to be alignment not allowing head to contact disc.
    Good luck.
    Stan.

  • Floppy drive problem and memory question!!!!!!!!!

    hi
i have a bit of a problem i cant get windows to allow my floppy drive to work, everything else works fine, the drive works and has been tested elsewhere, when i click on it in windows it say floppy drive needs formating and sometimes says there is no disk in there when the disk i have put in fully works and is full tested, please advise,
secondly i have 2*512 kingston pc3200 value ram 3-3-3 , i am currently running them and they are working fine and are very fast but when i do benchmarks it says they are running in single channel, just need to know if they are suppoused to be like that or can i get them to run in dual channel , and if so what will the diffrence be?
i would really appreciate if you could help me with these question please e-mail me at [email protected] if you wish to send me info or ask me any quetions, cheers

    Hi
Floppy drive. Is the Floppy seek enabled in advanced bios features. Is the floppy set as a Boot Device. Is the floppy controller enabled in integrated peripherals, not on auto, but enabled.
Does your floppy cable have a twisted wire in it ?   Some older floppy drives have jumpers to set them to either Flp1 to Flp2.  Also if cable does not have twisted pair, you might need to set floppy swap as well.
This CPU and Mobo use single channel Ram by default, so no loss in speed.
    cheers

  • Floppy drive problem

i can't mount a floppy disk, i'd try with volcheck and manually "mount -F pcfs /dev/diskette0 /floopy" and i got "mount-point /floppy does not exist"
if i create it with mkdir i got "mount I/O error"
    what can i do?

To be really sure, try to enable the floppy driver's debug output messages using the command
    echo 'fcerrlevel/W0' | adb -wk
and retry a "dd" read access to the floppy media:
    dd if=/dev/rdiskette of=/dev/null bs=512 count=2
On the console window or in /var/adm/messages you should now find lots of debug output.
Is there any "WARNING: diskette 0 changed!!!" message logged? If yes, then the patch should help.
Btw. the original user reporting the problem also mentioned the "no such device or address" error:
    http://www.riddleware.com/solx86/solarisonintel/msg36374.html
It's possible that the first floppy access get's the "no such device or address" error, and subsequent
    accesses get the I/O error.

  • Problem with 5.25 floppy drives

    Hello.
I have a problem with functioning of 5.25 floppy drives on my MSI 645 Ultra (MS-6547) mother board. Seems the board does not support such drive, while BIOS claims it does.
When I connect 5.25-inch floppy drive to the motherboard, and define it as 5.25-inch floppy drive in BIOS Setup, the 5.25-inch diskettes inserted into the drive are not recognized by DOS. I tried two floppy drives of different vendors. Both work properly on my other (older) computer with the same diskettes. The diskettes are good - I have several tens of them.
When I failed to solve the problem myself, I tried to get help from the store, where I have purchased the motherboard. Their results were the same as mine.
The most good result that I could achieve - is to connect 5.25-inch floppy drive as usual, but to define it as 3.5-inch floppy drive. In this case I can at least read my diskettes. But it is obvious that I shall not be able to write/format these diskettes because of format geometry and physical surface differences between 5.25-inch diskettes and 3.5-inch diskettes.
I tried BIOS versions v1.6 (provided at the purchasing moment), v1.7, v1.8 and v1.9 (the latest).
Does MSI tests their board/BIOS-s for working with 5.25-inch floppy drives?
Does anyone of forum participants have MSI 645 Ultra (MS-6547) board with working 5.25-inch floppy drive connected to it?
    Thank you.

Seems that I mistaken with the forum. I'll redirect my message to other MSI forum.

  • Floppy Drive Problem (FDD)

I just put together the system in my sig last night. Except for me not understanding how to configure 2 SATA drives in non RAID mode (in another thread), I have only one other outstanding problem. I can't read floppies in my floppy drive (which I may need to do for that nVidia RAID stuff....   )
The drive is set to 1.44 MB in the bios. Originally I had reversed the cable on the back of the thing; the symptom of that was the access light came on solid. I then fixed that and got XP installed. Later, I put a floppy in to try it out, and when I click on the drive the access light comes on solid, the disk grinds, and very quickly XP comes back and says "Please insert a disk into drive A:".
I know the disk is good, it works in another computer. I then swapped out the floppy drive with another (thinking I may have fried the first with the backwards cable), but it does the same thing. I reseated the connecter to the drive and motherboard.
Device manager doesn't report any problems with the floppy.
    Any ideas?  Thanks!!
