Footnotes don't always transfer from Word (Mac) to Pages; advice?

I would love to use Pages instead of Word: it satisfies all my document needs but one! When I open a Word document (formatted as a Macintosh Word document) sometimes it works just fine, and all the formatting is correct -- and (most importantly) all the footnotes are transferred, too. But other times -- and there are many! -- only the formatted text transfers, not the notes. Curiously, the footnote superscripts transfer, but not the footnotes themselves. I have tried to use "Cmd-A" to see if that would work, but, clearly, it doesn't because it only captures *either* the text *or* the footnotes, but not both. This defect so cripples Pages for me that I can't plan on using it! Sad, because I otherwise like it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Test footnote import with .doc and .rtf formats, and see which format puts problems, as far as I noticed, it is rtf, even if rtf  export is sometimes recommended, e.g. if you work with Mellel, which ALWAYS deals better with rtf than doc. Also test which apps puts such problems, am not sure all apps and all generations of Office have the same results, unfortunately.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, when you are going to turn off or restart your Mac, you will see a box called "Reopen windows when logging back in" in the shutdown or restart window. Untick this box and see if the App Store opens automatically in the next startup.
If it starts, open System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items, and see if the App Store shows up. If so, remove it from this list

Everytime I try to print a doc from word.mac it tells me that it can't save the file because I don't have permission then closes the file. What do I do to change this?

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

Depending on the system version, and Office Word version:
    - a pure URL link starting with http or even www sometimes works in PDF, either produced by Aperçu or Adobe, sometimes does not work;
    - other kind of links where the text under display is not a URL, never work!
I like everything with Apple computers and software, except PDF generation. Output files are usually bigger in size, and no better quality, than under Windows. Furthermore, it is weird that something as common as hyperlinks does not work correctly!
I related this question with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, but the problem is still there with Mac OS Lion.
This problem seems to have been around for years, without any proper solution from Apple and/or Adobe! To me, this is very embarrassing!

    Greetings NoNameGiven,
If I understand the problem correctly (I’m not sure I do) you would prefer ‘iii’ to be read as “eye eye eye” rather than “three”? The alt text property is the only way that I know of to make this happen. Hope this helps.

  • Hi - I have just bought my first IPAD and I need to transfer from my MAC a 'recipe file' consisting of many, doc and docx files - I have also just bought Keynote to do this but I can't seem to transfer,, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Hi - I have just bought my first IPAD [3 rd gen, no wifi] and one of the things I want it to do is to accept transfered word files
preferably as folders from my MAC - I just bought Keynote but it doesn't seem to work. My files are all doc and docx so I think
perhaps looking into it more I should have bought Pages instead,, but I don't want to spend more money on another app if
possible. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Endnote bibliography transfer from word to page not aligned?

I have a word document with endnote bibliography that I need to transfer to my page document which also has its own bibliography. Somehow, after I copy and paste the content from word to page, the bibliography is not coordinate. It became two separate parts (e.g. one section from word and the other from page. These two sections are not alphabaticlally arranged and combined as one bibliography) How can I make it coordinate with each other?  Thanks!!

the version of my endnote is X4

  • Transfer from one Mac to another

I'll be buying a MacBook Pro in a few weeks, and will transfer the data from my Black Book to that when I initially connect the machines (I assume via Firewire with a 6-pin-to-9-pin cable).
But I'm going to give my Black Book to my daughter, who'll be migrating her hard disc's contents to the Black Book, and I'm not sure if her system has Migration Assistant (though of course my Mac--being the target computer in this case--does).
How is the best and easiest way to handle this?

before going thru with everything, make sure to repair permissions on all of the machines & verify the disk to make sure there aren't any directory errors (open Disk Utility from Mac HD/Applications/Utilities, select Mac HD from the list on the left, click the First Aid tab. click the repair permissions button. then click verify disk, only one of these can run at a time).
yes, pretty much boot the older Mac(s) holding T, plug them in via firewire, & open the assistant (or you can also select "import from another mac or hard drive" when you first bootup the new Mac) & select the option that imports from another hard drive or time machine disk.

    try this script:
    iTunes Track CPR v1.3
This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx)."

  • Could not transfer from one Mac to another with external hard drive

    Hello,
I have a mid-2010 MBP 13". I just got a new external hard drive (seagate back up plus slim, 1TB). When it asked me, I chose to have it compatible with both Macs and PCs when I first got it and plugged it in.
I was able to put my own file on it, give the hard drive to a friend who has a new Macbook Air (relatively new, not sure which edition), and she could transfer it onto her Mac, but could not put anything from her Mac to the hard drive.
    Any help?

Exactly what is the format and how did you format it?  Did you use Disk Utility or did you format it on a PC?
    Ciao.

  • Transfer from one mac to another..HELP

I transfered my info from one mac to my new mac book pro and ka-boom, the old i photo library has replaced the new one. The 300 photos I had already added to this new mac book pro are gone...where did they go? can I recover them?

If you used the Migration Assistant, your original iPhoto library is in another account's home folder; see this article for instructions on creating a single iPhoto library. To access the other account, choose Log Out from the Apple menu, and then provide the other account's username and password.

  • How do I save formatting from Word docs to pages?

    Hi
Often when I open a word document in Pages I get a document warning pop up box.  Often I find that basic things from the Word doc have been changed.  For example, things that were in Bold text in the Word doc are no longer in Bold in the Pages file.  How do I prevent this from happening as the document moves back and forth between myself ( a Pages user) and a clien (who has Word)?

    Hello
As far as I know, Word create faux-style when a bold or an italic version of a font isn't available.
In such case, bold or italic will be dropped in Pages.
From my point of view it's a good choice but it may hurt some users.

  • Convert from Word Processing to Page Layout?

I received a 26 page document that is in Word Processing mode, but I would like to convert to Page Layout mode.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Phil

The question is whether the WP version is just main body text or has floating text boxes and image boxes.
If it is just main body text then there is no problem. Just click in the text and Select All (cmd a).
Open a suitable Layout document and paste into a text box, then create links from that to other pages/text boxes.
As fruhulda and Jerrold have said, WP is often the better choice as it generally includes everything that Layout has, but not vice versa. You will need to think through your layout however and construct it to whatever freeform layout you may want.
My personal opinion is that Layout mode is severely challenged.

  • Startup disc full after file transfer from old mac

    Hi everyone,
I had a Macbook pro that was about 6 years old until I bought a new Macbook Air. I tried to transfer my files via the migration assistant but it didn't work, so I backed everything up onto an external hard drive and then transferred everything via that onto my new macbook air. All the files saved onto my desktop in a file called "Olivia's MacBook Pro", but none of the files are directly linked to my new air (i.e., I can access my old pictures through my desktop but they aren't in my new iPhoto). The issue I'm having is that I often get a popup that says my startup disc is full. I followed directions on old threads that said to download omnidiscsweeper, which I did, and all the room is being taken up by that folder of all my old stuff on my desktop (~185 GB).
My question is- do I just have too much stuff? Is there a way to keep my pictures and such on my new computer without always getting this error message and having to shut down different applications? Please help! I am not very computer savvy
    Thanks so much for reading.
PS- appx 76 GB of my computer storage is movies...but I don't have any movies saved on here that I know of... another 72 GB is "Other".
    Thanks!!

Frankly, You'll probably waste more time and effort than if you just got a Firewire cable. I'm pretty sure you'll need to have a cross connect Ethernet Cable (I usually make my own, not sure where you'd buy one) to connect them via ethernet, and even then you still have to mess around with getting them to talk to each other. Other option is to plug both computers into a hub or switch, or better yet a router.
Another option is to spend $20 on a usb adapter that can connect any drive to your Mac. [Here is one that I have|http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo =2329300&CatId=3770] from Tiger Direct that works quite well.

  • ITunes full transfer from one Mac to another - Help Please

Good morning, I have searched for this answer prior to this post however I have not found the specific scenario that I am asking a question about and would like some direction if possible, so any assistance is greatly appreciated and I thank all who can help ahead of time.
I have a Macbook Pro laptop that I currently have my entire music library loaded on, iPhone, iPad, and iPod synced to.  I have all of my purchases, downloads, etc. for these devices all synced up to this laptop.  I have a second MacBook Pro (newer) that I have been using side by side but have never transferred any of my library, iOS device syncs, etc. to it.  I have literally never used iTunes on my newer Macbook Pro.  I am going to be getting rid of my old laptop and want to make sure that everything gets transferred over to the new laptop.
The 3 main things that I need to do properly are as follows.
    1) Transfer all music/videos/playlists from my old mac to new Mac.
    2) Make sure that my iOS devices sync properly and recognize the new Mac as their "owner" or "main computer" for syncing.
    3) Deactivate old Mac iTunes or iOS devices in iTunes or whatever I need to do before wiping this computer out and rebuilding it to "decommission" it.
I just want to make sure that if iTunes takes a "seat" for my username, that this Mac's "seat" is freed up for use by my new Mac and I want to make sure that my iOS devices are going to sync up properly with the new Mac as they did with my old.
I am very sorry if these have been covered before (they likely have I'm sure) however as I said, I wasn't able to find the information specific to my needs, so even if you just point me in the right direction, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you again.

    3) Downloaded all purchassed items on destination computer.
Don't need this as your purchases are in the iTunes folder you copy across in step 4.
    4) Replaced entire Music folder on destination computer with source computer's Music folder
This copied over the files you downloaded step 3.

  • Data Transfer from iMac (Mac OS 8.6) to Windows

I am trying to help my 84 year old father move from iMac to Windows Vista. I can help him with Windows, but know very little about Mac, so it has been a challenge for years to assist with his computer use.
He has a large number of relatively small Word 2001 documents I want to move to the new environment. He also uses a browser based email client and is running an older version of Netscape as the browser.
My first attempt was to use a USB thumb drive to copy the files between the two systems. This failed with errors of unrecognized USB device. I found a couple references to this, and installed "USB Mass Storage Support version 1.3.5" (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60394). Now, when I insert the USB drive, there is no error message. But when I open Disk Utility, I do not see the USB device - only the hard drive and floppy. Am I looking in the right location to see the USB device? Is there anything I need to do to enable the USB device?
My next idea was to email the files to my account and then download them on the new computer. This works to get the files onto the new computer, but they are in a format that is unrecognizable to anything in the Windows world. When I attach the files to a message in the browser email client, they were renamed from "File Name.doc" to "iso-8859-1''File%20Name". I am not sure if this is a behavior of the email client or the browser or something else. At any rate, I am not able to interpret those files on the Windows computer. I have an ODF word processor that has an import from iso 8859-1 format, but even that does not come in cleanly. I am not sure where I am going wrong.
Any suggestions to assist in the transfer? Can I put all of the word docs into a zip file and just email that?
    Is there an easier way?

But when I open Disk Utility, I do not see the USB device - only the hard drive and floppy. Am I looking in the right location to see the USB device? Is there anything I need to do to enable the USB device?
If the computer is running Mac OS 8.6, and USB Mass Storage Support 1.3.5 is installed, the USB flash drive should appear on the Desktop. The iMac should see a PC-formatted drive. Connect the flash drive to one of the USB ports in the computer (not the keyboard). USB device detection difficulties are not unusual. If still problematic, you may want to try another drive model.
BTW, you mentioned a floppy. Since the iMac does not have a built-in floppy drive, would it be correct to assume that an external USB floppy drive has been connected?
When I attach the files to a message in the browser email client, they were renamed from "File Name.doc" to "iso-8859-1''File%20Name". I am not sure if this is a behavior of the email client or the browser or something else. At any rate, I am not able to interpret those files on the Windows computer.
You could try to rename the files again, with a .doc suffix. Usually, files can be opened under Windows anyway (but from a list). Have you checked whether the file format in question appears under the Open dialogue in your PC word processing program? Otherwise, you could per se save the files in a universal format (such as RTF or plain Text) on the iMac, but that may be complicated with a large number of documents.
