Footnotes in Pages

Hi, I'm trying to make alphabetic footnotes in pages, as my endnotes are numeric, and this is the format my lecturer has said they need to be in. But I cannot for the life of me find an option to make my footnotes carry letters instead of numbers, an i really don't know how else I would be able to go about doing things otherwise. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated

I never found a way to change the notes numbering.
My own tip would be to create small text boxes in which I would insert the needed letter.
Of course, it must be done when the doc is ready to distribute.

  • End footnotes to page footnote in xml flow indesign files.

    Hi,
I am working with xml files in Indesign, but I had the problem with footnote text, because I need to set the end footnotes to be the page footnote.
Is there any script to make end footnote to page footnote for XML through Indesign files.
    Thanks
    Hasvi

In Indesign there is no way you can directly work on the XML-IN footnote, since indesign won't support XML tags in footnote stream.
To achive that you need to have XSLT/Perl/Indesign Scripting.
This task is achievable, you can create a auto footnote for XML workflow projects.
    1. Create an XSLT to transform the footnote to the respective places
    2. Change all the "<" ">" to some standard names, since indesign won't accept XML tags in the footnote stream.
    3. Import it in indesign and using script convert it to autofootnote.

  • Is there a way to change the spacing between footnotes in Pages on OS Mavericks?

I am trying to write a paper for a class I am taking but cannot seem to change the spacing between footnotes in Pages. Can anyone help me out with this?

    Yes.
Click on the footnotes in Pages ’09 or v5.2.2.
In Pages ’09, in the Document Inspector, there is a section called Footnotes & Endnotes.
In Pages v5.2.2, a new Footnotes tab will appear.

  • Is there a way to get footnotes in Pages to flow across different pages?

    Hello,
Currently, I am finding that my document has a lot of white space wherever I have a footnote of more than ten lines or so. As a result, my document looks awkward and has large gaping sections on pages where there is very little main body but a large footnote. I am sure this has to do with footnotes not flowing over onto the next page, and I wanted to find out if there was a way to help sort out this problem.
    Any help is much appreciated.

You can convert songs to Mono.  First, go to iTunes > Preferences > General > Import Settings.  Under the encoder menu is another drop-down menu for Settings.  Choose "Custom" and you'll be able to select a choice for Mono.  Once that is set, use the iTunes > Advanced menu to create a mono version.  The original stereo version will remain in your library unless you choose to delete it.

  • How can I make a keyboard shortcut for 'insert footnote' in Pages 09?

I do a lot of accademic work and it is incredibly frustrating not to have a shortcut for one of the most frequent tasks i perform in pages. Please can someone help me?

Menu > Apple > System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts Application Shortcuts > + > Application: Browse to Pages > Menu Title: Footnote > Keyboard Shortcut: hit combination of keys > Add
You will need to restart Pages but should then see it next to your Menu item.

  • Citation in footnotes of Pages with Endnote

How do I enter a full citation with the endnote plugin in the footnote of a Pages 09 document?

What "cautionary notes attached to ALL upgrades"?
There weren't any with Pages 5!
In fact most users didn't even know the automatic upgrade had happened until their work was ruined. Without warning and synching the bad copy over every copy thanks to iCloud.
Who expected to be ambushed by Apple?
…and wait till you have lost your first major job, and can't recover a thing.
Good luck RTFM. There isn't one.
Tell me exactly how being "64 bit" has improved your work in any way. So much so that not being able to do 100 things that were possible, is now not possible.
Do you always parrot what other people tell you, no matter how nonsensical, without actually thinking for yourself?

btw That program that doesn't exist, does exist. It is Pages '09, and it is no handicap that it actually works.

  • Numbering of Footnotes in Pages 5.0.1

I have 4 footnotes (data sources) in a one page document in Pages 5.0.1.  I have about 20 lines of text, mostly in bullet form.  Is there any way to reference the 4 footnotes in some cases repeatedly and not in sequential order.
For example,  Text line one referencing footnotes 1,2.  Text line two referencing footnotes 1,2. Line 5 referencing footnote 3,4.  Lines 8-14 each referencing footnotes 1,2 or just 1 or 2. Line 18 referencing footnote 1,3.
    Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately, no.  The latest vesion of Pages is seriously crippled.  Note, however, that if you had the previous (1.7.2) version of Pages for iOS, then you can reinstall that on your iPad.
    1. Delete Pages 2 from your iPad
    2. Pluf in you iPad to your mac and fire up itunes
    3. navigate to your iPad in the sidebar and click "Apps" (the second page)
    4. locate the icon for Pages 1.7.2 and click install.
You can then share documents between your Mac and your iPad (after you export any documents you may have created with the new versions back to PAges 09 format. You can also export them to Word format and then open them with the previous versions of Pages.) That is what I have done.

  • Footnotes Spanning Pages?

Given my recent frustrations with Word 2008, I'm looking into moving to Pages. Last I checked, Pages doesn't support long footnotes. I primarily do academic writing and occasionally have notes that need to span two pages. Does Pages support this? If not, who do I plead to add this?

    Hello
Neither Word nor Pages where designed for academic writings.
Go to "Provide Pages Feedback" in the "Pages" menu, describe what you wish.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait at least for iWork'09

  • How to make tiny numbers for footnotes in pages?

I cant figure out how to make the number small in pages on my Ipad 2. The app is up to date and aswell is the software, iOS 5.1 but I can't figure out how to make the number tiny and move up to the left hand corn of the letter. Example, the number should like like the '2' in h2o but I don't know how, please help.

    Hi vnessar
When you place the insertion point where you want your footnote referenced (tap, hold, release) and select Insert  > Footnote, it automatically places the superscript number for your footnote there and takes you to the bottom of the page in a Footnote field with the reference number already filled in.
If you add another, (tap, hold, release - which brings up the "Select | Select All | Paste | Insert" menu) it will become Footnote 2 and so on.
    See Insert footnotes or endnotes
In step 2. Tap >, tap Insert, and then tap Footnote.  The triangle is the "more button". Just ignore that and tap Insert and Footnote.
    Does that work for you?

  • How to set a consistent footnote in pages 09?

    Hi people,
I am currently writing a business report in Pages 09.
I want to have on all pages the same footnote and headnote.
Now, I have some stuff in the foot and head line of the first page and attached the style to it - but i did not anyything to set this to have the same text in every the footnote to every page, didnt also find it in the manuals - can you help?
    thanks!

My guess is that your document is organized in sections and, for some reason, you asked the program to use different header/footer in the second section.
Using the setting displayed here you will get the same footer in every pages.

  • Removing spaces between footnotes in Pages

New to Pages, so this may just be a setting I've missed. I've got pages with several footnotes and the spaces between the footnotes, though nice, are not considered to be the "proper" format. How do I remove this space so they're more blocks of text? I'd prefer a solution that still allows the footnotes to be "separate" so that footnotes can move with repagination.

nevermind. Found it in the Inspector. Still new to Macs so that always throws me off

  • Footnotes in Page Layout

I have a newsletter that I'm creating in the Page Layout mode. I would like to use a colored background for the entire document. The newsletter is for viewing on the internet so the colored background looks nice - the colored background covers the entire page. The problem is that when I add the object for the background it covers the header and footer. I would like to use the same footer on every page and page numbers in the header. Is there anyway to have the header and footer move forward, or the colored object move back? I've tried simply trying to send to back and send to front but that doesn't work. Any ideas?

    Hello
If I understand well, there is nothing mysterious.
Create a huge rectangular shape whose dimensions are a bit larger than those of the entire page.
Set it to white background + white border.
Create a rectangular shape whose length is a bit shorter than the page width and whose height matches the header one.
Set it to black background + black border.
Move it so that it is exactly where the header is.
Group the two objects and lock the resulting one.
You will get a background above which you will be able to put anything.
I was able to copy every item from the template to my doc.
At this time, the only difference I see with the template is that when I click my background, I may see the rectangle enclosing it as a thin blue rectangle (if I maximise the window to the entire screen) while there is not such rectangle on the template but maybe It would be sufficient to make it wide enough to get rid of this difference.
If I have free time tomorrow, I will look in the template Index.xml if there is a "special instruction" as there is one for the embedded date value.

  • Footnotes using Turabian style in Pages

I'm writing a dissertation which the school requires to be in Turabian (Chicago) style. Footnotes in pages use superscript and Turabian requires plain numerals at the start of the note. If I convert the superscript numeral to a regular numeral, Pages doesn't recognize the footnote as such. Has anyone figured this out? Thanks.

The Pages User Guide might help here.

  • Footnoting - Logos Bible Software and Pages

Hey all. I am currently using Pages '09 and the new Logos Bible Software for mac.
In Windows I used to be able to just copy paste to a pages document and it would create the footnote for me! I can't figure out how to set this up in Pages.
Are any of you using Logos and Pages?
Do you know how to get the footnoting to interact better?

I've been having the same problem as well. I contacted Logos about this because this was the main reason I went with them. Below is a summary of the email I received...
I'm afraid that Pages does not support our footnoting capabilities. There is a open source text editor called OpenOffice that you can download for free and it does support our footnotes....
...the problem with this footnotes is with Pages. Libronix includes the data for the footnotes but Pages is not designed to use the extra data to create footnotes. Unless Pages comes out with an update that includes allowing footnote data I doubt we will be able to make this feature work for Pages.
I was pretty bummed to hear this but that's the way it is I guess.

  • Pages 2: Bitter footnote disappointment

I just bought--and received this past evening--the new version of Pages, after having bought the original version last winter and carefully moved all of my word-processing to it. I was coming from WriteNow, so it was quite a transition.
Since then, I have been living with the necessity of saving my documents as Word documents and patiently "prettying them up" in Word before exchanging them with my publisher--telling myself that with Pages 2, there would be no more need for this, since footnote and endote support would be fully implemented.
At this point I have fully committed myself to this program as a word-processing solution--because I heard Steve Jobs say that iWork was "building the successor to AppleWorks"--and I'm starting to panic. AppleWorks could do everything that one needed a plain word processor to do (except run stably), and Pages still can't. Will it ever? So far the pace of improvement has not been blistering--these changes are certainly not worth a doubling of my initial purchase price--and in one essential way Pages is still far behind where WriteNow was more than a decade ago.
After a full year of waiting, yes, it is nice to be able to use endnotes without passing through Word (a must for submitting manuscripts to journals and publishers), and it's also nice to be able to reduce the spacing between notes. (It would be even nicer to be able to remove the separator between footnotes and text, or to make it a hairline instead of a 1-point line.)
But the footnote support is still pitiful--so bad, and so much cruder than programs going back 15 or more years into the past, that I still can't use it to provide colleagues with word-processed documents without going through Word first. The problem is that there is no provision for footnotes that break across page boundaries, which leads to amateurish-looking pages, filled with apparently random white spaces, in any academic paper with discursive (long) footnotes. And almost all academic papers, at least in my discipline of history, have more or less discursive footnotes. Mine are no exception, and all of the book chapters and articles that I write in Pages accordingly look as if they were composited by a drunk when I print them out.
To make the notes look normal enough to pass on to a colleague without embarrassment, I will still have to save my documents into Word and re-open and tinker with them there.
I feel completely ripped off. This is a trivial feature to implement--in fact, not having it is more by way of being a bug than having it would be a "feature." Without it, footnotes can't be said to work properly in Pages--it's genuinely that simple. If I wanted to still be stuck with a dying word processor, going without vital updates from its owners, I could have simply stayed with WriteNow.

Michael, thanks so much for understanding. I have posted feedback about this at http://www.apple.com/feedback/pages.html, and would encourage anyone else who cares about this problem to do the same.
The heart does sink a little at the prospect of waiting another year, and paying another $50, in the hope that it will be fixed. But it seems to be the only real option.
I am pasting in the feedback I posted just below, as a shorter and more temperate summary of the problem for anyone who comes across this thread.
Pages 2 makes no provision for breaking footnotes across page boundaries. The result is strange and amateurish-looking pages, filled with puzzling gaps and white spaces, in any academic paper that has discursive (long) footnotes.
Almost all academic papers, at least in my discipline of history, have discursive footnotes. Mine are no exception, and all of the book chapters and articles I write in Pages accordingly look as if they were composited by a blind man when I print them out.
The effects of this problem are clear on pretty nearly every page that a historian (or other academic or advanced student in the humanities) writes. To make the notes look normal enough to pass on to a colleague without embarrassment, I will have to save my documents into Word and re-open and tinker with them there.
This problem seems to me to be a bug, not a missing feature--acutely so, in a program whose raison d'être is the production of attractive-looking text documents--because I don't know of any other commercially-available word processor that has this problem: not Word, of course, not Nisus, not Mariner Write, not Mellel, not AppleWorks. (Indeed, not even WriteNow, a program last updated in 1994.)
I am absolutely delighted with the implementation of endnotes in Pages 2 (as well as with the new ability to reduce the spacing between footnotes), and I hope very much that you'll quickly repair this one remaining problem, too. It will make a large--and immediately visible--difference in the daily writing of most of the academics who use your program, which is otherwise quite wonderful.
    Thanks very much.
