For admin access how can I change my password if I don't know my password?

I have a new Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.4.2) and want to install Office:mac software. I am the only user for this computer, and under Accounts I am listed as the Administrator. I don't recall ever entering a password when I first set up my computer. So, now I am unable to gain administrative access to my own computer.
When I click the lock icon to make changes to my admin account, it asks for a password. When I don't click the lock and just go straight to "Change Password" it also asks for my old password in order to create the new password. I do not know the old password because I don't recall ever creating one in the first place! Is there a way to find that password? If not, is there a way to create a new password without knowing the old password? Do I need to reinstall my start-up software? If I do need to reinstall, can someone please walk me through that process? The other postings on this topic did not make sense to me.
I am very new to the world of computers so I thank you for your patience.

If you did not set up a password (left it blank) then you don't enter anything when prompted and simply click on OK. If that does not work, then you did set up a password at some point. If you've forgotten the password you can reset it by booting from your Tiger Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on Continue. Then select Reset Password from the Installer menu. You will then be able to create a new password without having the old one.

Assuming that User has already his/her user-id and password, and now he/ she wants to change it.
select the client and provide Log-in credentials. Now, instead of 'ENTER' there is one Tab: 'New Password' (up, left hand). Click it.
Now, system will ask for new password to change.
If you are asking from Basis point of view, then T.code: SU01 - User Maintenance.
Enter User's id and Click Change icon.
It will lead to Page: Maintain User.
Here, Select tab: Logon Data
There is a Sub-Tab: Password.
Here, key-in change password and SAVE.
For Language and Date format, contact your Basis-Personnel.

just so you all don't think i can't read i tried restoring my phone but it is telling me that it can't restore the phone because it is locked. i'm not entirely sure how i entered a password in twice incorrectly, but go figure. does anyone have anyother ideas other than restoring it?

Hello, dot mac & MobtleMe no longer exist, though it may be possible to still use a dot mac addy... or maybe not if expired.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    •    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    •    SSL Required: Yes
    •    Port: 993
    •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    •    Password: Your iCloud password
SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    •    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    •    SSL Required: Yes
    •    Port: 587
    •    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
    •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    •    Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria: 8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers. If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message. Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

I copied the info below from iCal's help pages. I found it by going to the Help>iCal Help menu item in iCal and entering "add event" in the search box.
You might also want to search for "tips" in iCal's help.
1. Click the name of the calendar you want to add an event to.
2. In Day or Week view, drag from the start time to the end time for the event, then type a subject for the event. In Month view, double-click the white area on the day you want the new event to appear, then type a subject.
You can also quickly create a new one hour event by double-clicking in the main calendar view.
3. To make any other changes to your event (for example, how often it repeats or whether it has an alarm), click the Info button in the bottom-right corner of the iCal window to open the Info drawer, and make your choices.
In Day or Week view, you can also open the Info window by double-clicking the bar along the top of the event (where the event's start time appears).
If the selected event will take place in a different time zone (for example, if you will be traveling to another location for a meeting), choose iCal > Preferences and make sure the "Turn on time zone support" checkbox is selected in the Advanced pane. Then choose a time zone for this event from the "time zone" pop-up menu in the Info drawer.
For more information about changing the alarm, time zone, or how often the event occurs, click "Tell me more."
4. To invite someone to the event, click None next to "attendees" and type the email address of each person you want to invite, separated by commas. When you're ready to invite these guests to your event, click the Send button at the bottom of the Info drawer.
If you're inviting someone whose contact information is stored in your Mac OS X Address Book, you can also type just their name in the attendees field. Matching email addresses appears as you type.

Do you mean you have a Macbook Pro (laptop) versus a Mac Pro (desktop)?
You can back up the MBP, restart using Command+R to boot into the Mavericks Recovery HD, erase the Mactintosh HD and Reinstall OS X. Then you can go through setup and configure it with your information and Apple ID. Mavericks should not prompt you for an Apple ID when it goes through the install since that OS is free.
One thing you might want to consider is asking the previous owner to unregister the MBP from his Apple ID if he previously registered it. Then you can register it under your Apple ID.
The previous owner should have wiped it clean and reinstalled the OS that came pre-installed before selling it.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.

There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)

is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use

You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.

If you had Find My iPhone activated on your iPhone, you can remotely wipe it, which you can do through iCloud on your computer. If you did not have Find My iPhone active on your phone you're out of luck.
You should immediately change all passwords for your Apple ID, email, any apps where you had a password, or any where you have credit cards tied to shopping.

Alternatively.. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears.
