For Lightroom 4...

I've been a long time user of Lr, starting with the first beta and I mostly love it.
It was only recently I tried Aperture 3, I wrote an indepth review of Lr 3 vs Aperture 3 (and others) here:
http://www.twin-pixels.com/raw-processors-review-aperture-bibble-capture-one-dxo-lightroom /
1. One thing I really like in Aperture is how nicely integrated the browse/library mode is, compared with Lightroom.
In Aperture, you can edit a picture while in Browse mode (as opposed to Lightroom's Quick Develop, which is pretty much useless). I'd love being able to get into Compare/Survey and still have full control over processing. I also find it confusing that some options are available while in Library mode but not in Develop mode. Things have improved since V1 but I still find the separation between Library and Develop as too artificial and having seen Aperture, I'm sure Lightroom can do better.
2. Another thing from Aperture I'd love to see is how if you have several images selected and change the let's say the Exposure, all images are updated. I know we have Sync and Copy from Previous but again there's room for improvement.
3. The perspective correction is very powerful but sometimes hard to do, especially when you need to alter all three axes. Here I'd like to see a keystoning tool like in DxO.
4. The purple fringing correction is not very powerful, compared to other programs. Capture One and DxO work on high radii  and they seem to correct the luminance in the affected areas as well.
4. Speaking of tools, how about more brushes? Like a Noise brush or a WB brush. How great would it be to be able to make local adjustments to WB.
These are my most important suggestions and I made them not to bash Lightroom, but because I want it to be THE tool for processing Raws.

Thanks, that was an interesting read. It is really odd that Bibble 5 doesn't support DNGs. They support all DNGs generated by cameras (such as from the Pentax K-7) and therefore it should be very easy to extend that to generic DNG support. It almost seems they want to make a position statement against DNG (Adobe). I agree with you that their local adjustment support is awesome but the UI appears to be a bit crude compared to LR.

+1
The first time I started LR I couldn't believe how "modal" the interface was. And this from a program that has strong roots in the Apple style for GUIs. If you are looking at a single image, the separation between "Libary" and "Develop" isn't that bad because with the "D" and "E" keys you basically just switch panels and I agree that not all panels should be visible all the time. However, first the switching should be quicker (sometimes it can take too long to be transparent to the user) and, second, this illusion of non-modality breaks down when you are working with other views, like "Compare", "Survey", "Grid" and "Import".
I too don't like how you are locked in to certain modes of operations. Less of a problem if switching between modes is really fast, but unfortunately it not always is.

They really should go all the way and -- like Bibble -- support any global adjustment also in a local manner. I love how the brushes work but sometimes polygons would be useful.
I'm surprised that you didn't go into cloning/patching support. Aperture 3 and Bibble 5 have a lot more to offer than LR3 where you have to abuse the spot removal tool. Do you never need to remove unwanted objects from your images? Given the choice between lens correction and better cloning/patching support, I'd take the latter any day.

Is it wise to keep the Nikon camera files "DSC's"  after downloading them and converting to DNG files via Adobe converter for lightroom use. In other words do the DNG files have all the raw data I would ever need in processing or should I save the camera's DSC files?

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

  • How can I get my serial number for Lightroom 3? I can't find my proof of purchase

I dealt with your chat staff for hours and did not get anywhere but upset. I have uploaded Lightroom 4.4 as a trial version. I purchased Lightroom 4 and provide my serial number then it asks for the prior serial number for Lightroom 3. The serial number that I have has letters and numbers and will not work. Please provide me with a serial number so that I may complete my install.  Please provide a phone number that can help me with this request.
    Thanks

As noted by JimHess the Educational version comes with a CODE and INSTRUCTION for what you need to do to get a valid serial number.
You must follow those instructions to get a valid serial number for LR 3.
But I must add that if you had lightroom 3 since it was released, even the educational version, you must of at one time gotten the serial number for it.
I'm not sure, since that version is now at least 4 years old (my copy is dated 2009), but I doubt Adobe is still running the serial number redemption service for lightroom 3.
So if you can't find the serial number for that version of LR 3 you will need to buy a Full Version of either LR 4 or LR 5

  • How do i find the serial number for lightroom

i tried the trial for 30 for lightroom and bought the photoshop and lightroom combo pack for 9.99 but whenever i open up lightroom it says that i need to put in a serial number!  How do i fix this?

There are two LRs, one licensed by a serial number, and one licensed by logging into CC, but only one LR can be installed at a time.
You need to uninstall the serial-number LR, then Quit the CC Desktop application (using the gear/quit or right-click/quit) and restart it, then you should see LR in the Apps list with an Install button next to it.  Install that version and you’ll be fine.

  • How do I receive a serial number for lightroom 5

I purchased a software CD from Amazon for Lightroom 5 upgrade and now I need a serial number so that it can be registered and operational.  The box shows these two numbers,  PN: 65215274  and also,  LTRM,5.0,MLP,UPG,UE001,DV.
Neither of these numbers are recognized by ADOBE. What can I do in order for me to receive the necessary serial number needed for my product's registration?

The serial number is normally located on the disc case, not on the outside of the box you see in the store.

Open Pictures folder and move the files named lrcat-journal and lrcat.lock to Desktop.
Make sure that , they are not inside Pictures folder any more and try to open backup from Lighrtroom and check..
Any LRcat file with .lock extension , move it to Desktop.

  • New Software for Lightroom is available! - This is a pop-up and not genuine

I have just received a pop-up for Lightroom. I have done a general search and it appears this is some kind of spam/scam? I noticed that there are others who have also received this pop-up.  It does not look like a genuine Adobe upgrade. It has 'Ignore these updates' 'remind me later' and download'....I have not 'clicked on any of its links.
I am operating on OS X 10.10.1 with a safari browser and my Adobe Lightroom and 'Flash' are both up-to-date'. My lightroom and all Adobe product is operating in Adobe CC. How do I get rid of this 'thing'?
Thanks, any suggestion that works will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the answers. I will say the pop-up looked suspicious and not at all what I would have expected from Adobe. As mentioned when I went with an online 'Google' search with regards this pop-up I found that there were others who also had doubts about this 'pretty basic pop-up'. But hey, thanks to both of you for the swift response and replies...All going as normal here and I can rest-easy.

  • Wish list for Lightroom 4

I just put together my wish list for Lightroom 4.
    http://davidnaylor.org/blog/2011/01/wish-list-for-lightroom-4/
What do you think? Did I miss anything important out?

I want soft proofing so bad, I didn't even upgrade to lr3, because the changes they did make meant so little in comparison to it.
Please Adobe, if you're reading this...SOFT PROOFING PUH-LEEZ!
Additionally, it would be very useful to be able to embed watermarks that are visible to printing services, but not visible when viewing files on screen.  I don't know if that's even possible, but it would help photographers who want to provide the files to our clients, but don't want them to have unlimited usage.  They can enjoy the photos on their computers, they could print too, but the printing services would be limited by whatever copyright limitations the photographer places on the invisible watermark.  For example, I might put something like:
copyright 2011 Iconic Photography, Vancouver, Canada
This image may be reproduced to a maximum print size of 8" x 12"
Contact Iconic Photography at [email protected] for more information.
This would prevent clients from making their own albums or wall prints.  Whaddaya say Adobe?

  • GPU notes for Lightroom CC (2015)

    Hi everyone,
I wanted to share some additional information regarding GPU support in Lr CC.
Lr can now use graphics processors (GPUs) to accelerate interactive image editing in Develop. A big reason that we started here is the recent development and increased availability of high-res displays, such as 4K and 5K monitors. To give you some numbers: a standard HD screen is 2 megapixels (MP), a MacBook Retina Pro 15" is 5 MP, a 4K display is 8 MP, and a 5K display is a whopping 15 MP. This means on a 4K display we need to render and display 4 times as many pixels as on a standard HD display. Using the GPU can provide a significant speedup (10x or more) on high-res displays. The bigger the screen, the bigger the win.
For example, on my test system with a 4K display, adjusting the White Balance and Exposure sliders in Lightroom 5.7 (without GPU support) is about 5 frames/second -- manageable, but choppy and hard to control. The same sliders in Lightroom 6.0 now run smoothly at 60 FPS.
So why doesn't everything feel faster?
Well, GPUs can be enormously helpful in speeding up many tasks. But they're complex and involve some tradeoffs, which I'd like to take a moment to explain.
First, rewriting software to take full advantage of GPUs is a lot of work and takes time. Especially for software like Lightroom, which offers a rich feature set developed over many years and release versions. So the first tradeoff is that, for this particular version of Lightroom, we weren't able to take advantage of the GPU to speed up everything. Given our limited time, we needed to pick and choose specific areas of Lightroom to optimize. The area that I started with was interactive image editing in Develop, and even then, I didn't manage to speed up everything yet (more on this later).
Second, GPUs are marvelous at high-speed computation, but there's some overhead. For example, it takes time to get data from the main processor (CPU) over to the GPU. In the case of high-res images and big screens, that can take a LOT of time. This means that some operations may actually take longer when using the GPU, such as the time to load the full-resolution image, and the time to switch from one image to another.
Third, GPUs aren't best for everything. For example, decompressing sequential bits of data from a file -- like most raw files, for instance -- sees little to no benefit from a GPU implementation.
Fourth, Lightroom has a sophisticated raw processing pipeline (such as tone mapping HDR images with Highlights and Shadows), and running this efficiently on a GPU requires a fairly powerful GPU. Cards that may work with in the Photoshop app itself may not necessarily work with Lightroom. While cards that are 4 to 5 years old may technically work, they may provide little to no benefit over the regular CPU when processing images in Lr, and in some cases may be slower. Higher-end GPUs from the last 2 to 3 years should work better.
So let's clear up what's currently GPU accelerated in Lr CC and what's not:
First of all, Develop is the only module that currently has GPU acceleration whatsoever. This means that other functions and modules, such as Library, Export, and Quick Develop, do not use the GPU (performance should be the same for those functions regardless of whether you have GPU enabled or disabled in the prefs).
Within Develop, most image editing controls have full GPU acceleration, including the basic and tone panel, panning and zooming, crop and straighten, lens corrections, gradients, and radial filter. Some controls, such as local brush adjustments and spot clone/heal, do not -- at least, not yet.
While the above description may be disappointing to some of you, let's be clear: This is the beginning of the GPU story for Lightroom, not the end. The vision here is to expand our use of the GPU and other technologies over time to improve performance. I know that many photographers have been asking us for improved performance for a long time, and we're trying to respond to that. Please understand this is a big step in that direction, but it's just the first step. The rest of it will take some time.
    Summary:
    1. GPU support is currently available in Develop only.
    2. Most (but not all) Develop controls benefit from GPU acceleration.
    3. Using the GPU involves some overhead (there's no free lunch). This may make some operations take longer, such as image-to-image switching or zooming to 1:1. Newer GPUs and computer systems minimize this overhead.
    4. The GPU performance improvement in Develop is more noticeable on higher-resolution displays such as 4K. The bigger the display, the bigger the win.
    5. Prefer newer GPUs (faster models within the last 3 years). Lightroom may technically work on older GPUs (4 to 5 years old) but likely will not benefit much. At least 1 GB of GPU memory. 2 GB is better.
    6. We're currently investigating using GPUs and other technologies to improve performance in Develop and other areas of the app going forward.
The above notes also apply to Camera Raw 9.0 for Photoshop/Bridge CC.

I posted the following information on the Luminous Landscape forum (GPU used in Develop but not Library?) in response to comments you made there.
I am very puzzled by the extremely blurry image in the second screen capture when the GPU is enabled.
    OS X (10.9.5)
    Hardware configuration:
       MacPro (late 2013)
       AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB
       Apple Cinema Display 1920 x 1200
       16 GB RAM
       1 TB SSD
Test file:  Nikon D800 NEF, 50 MB
    (0)  open the Develop module
    (1)  select a different NEF file and zoom to 1:1
    (2)  clear the ACR cache
    (3)  select the test file
    (4)  take 3 screenshots to illustrate the 3 display states (the first one is hard to capture)
    (5)  select another image
    (6)  same 3 states are present
    (7)  return to the test file and the same 3 display states are present
Why isn’t the ACR cache coming into play in step 7?
If I repeat this process with the GPU disabled the image is displayed without the intermediate states.
I have attached the 3 screenshots mentioned in step (4).

It sounds as if your browser and some of your apps are not color-managed.  This is pretty typical.  Even IE9 is only partially color-managed.
You can expect color-managed and non-color-managed applications to show you different things with the same images.  How different will depend upon how different your monitor color profile is from the image's color profile.
For web publication and most general use, experts usually advise saving images with the sRGB profile.  If such images, saved through the Save for Web & Devices function, look different to you than you expect, it may be that your input images have previously been saved in another color space.
You should really try to get your head around color-management by reading more on it.  It can seem baffling and it's difficult to understand without some background.  A quick web search turns up many overviews.  Beware, though, even people writing articles sometimes don't fully understand it.

I think you have downloaded the program directly from adobe. As you have the Photography plan, then you have to download this from Creative Cloud Desktop then they will be activated through with your email address. Then it will not ask for serial number.
