Force play from iTunes Match

I have my music collection stored on an external drive and itunes library files on the local disk.  How can I play music from itunes Match when the external drive is disconnected?

Are you still having issues with this? If you delete the files from iTunes (don't delete them from your external or iCloud), it should pull them from iCloud whenever you play them. Just make sure that in your iTunes Advanced preferences the storage location still points to your external hard drive.
Worst case scenario here is that files are duplicated when you play the file from iTunes Match. Try it out with a song or two that you know aren't duplicates. Then, while connected to the external, secondary/right click on the file and select "Show in Finder". If a dupe has not been created, you're golden.

  • Trouble playing from itunes match on macbook pro without original files

Im trying to play (or even organize) my songs in the cloud.
Im using a laptop and don't want to always have to have the external hard drives (on which the music files live) always connected to the computer.
Thats why i subscribe to iTunes match right?
But when i try to play most files, i get an error that says it cannot locate the original files (see pic)
I click on cancel (because the drives are not connected) and it goes ahead and finds the song in the cloud and plays it.
So they're all there (mostly) in the cloud but iTunes wants to play the file from the drive before it looks at the cloud.
Is there any way to have iTunes default to looking at the music in the cloud only?
    OSX 10.10.1 (14B25)
    Itunes 12.0.1.26
    Thanks Thanks Thanks!!!

    Hi,
You should create a new library specifically for streaming music from match. Hold option key whilst turning on iTunes and select create new library. You will now have a blank library and you should add iTunes match, select add this computer. You will now see all your music in the cloud.
When you have ext drive attached you can hold option key whilst turning on iTunes and select appropriate library.

  • Is the music I play from iTunes Match taking up storage space on my iPad?

I'm a bit confused. I have about 9000 songs in my laptop iTunes. I signed up for iTunes Match. As I play songs from those 9000 is it bringing them into my iPad and using storage there, or do they stay in my iCloud storage area and simply play from there? I signed up for it with understanding/hope that I could have all my music without using up space on my devices (iPad and iPhone). Am I correct that my device storage is NOT being used?

    You're welcome.

Thanks for the answer Michael. So how will I know when I'm getting dangerously close to using up all of my storage/data capacity?
If you've got your iDevice set up to sync via Wi Fi you can just look at the summary page for the device in iTunes to see how much capatcity is being used. But it shouldn't be a problem because the Music app will delete older downloaded tracks to make room for newer tracks as you download them. You can also delete music by track by swiping and tapping the delete button; or by Album or Artist by tap-n-hold and tapping the "x."

If I delete songs from my device to free up space will that delete it from my computer or iCloud list?
No. Only from your iDevice. And even when you do delete a track from your iDevice you'll still be able to see it as being in the cloud so you can download it again.

n my opinion Apple makes iCloud and iTunes Match sound like they are streaming technologies. Or let's at least say they aren't very forthcoming that all songs played are downloaded to your device. Maybe if you have any persuassion with Apple you could suggest they tweak their marketing message.
I don't have any "persuassion" with Apple but I do agree that the marketing language is, shall we say, fuzzy. It definitely should be modified.

  • How can I download songs from iTunes match to my iMac

How can I down load my music from iTunes match and play it on my iMac without having g3 or wifi?

    Hi tkattan,
iTunes Match is ran strictly off of Wi-Fi or a Cellular connection. Devices with iTunes Match turned off can have both the computer and device without any connection to the internet to download music via USB. However, iTunes Match is ran off of iCloud—a Wi-Fi/Cellular based product.
If you would like to download a song on your device connected to the internet:
Make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi or a Cellular Network.
Make sure your device is running iOS 5.0 or higher (only iDevices can run iTunes Match).
Go to "Music" and you will see music able to be downloaded from the cloud. (If you do not see your music, make sure you have General > Music > Show All Music "ON".)
Click the cloud symbol next to the songs you would like to stream them on your phone and without a Wi-Fi/Cellular connection.
    Hope this helps!

  • HT204406 My HDD crashed which held all of my music.  Can I recover the music from iTunes Match and download it back to a new HDD?

My HDD crashed and it contained all of the music from which iTunes and iMatch pulled files from.  Is there a way to recover the music from iTunes Match and download it back to my new HDD?

My computer HDD did not crash only my external drive with the music files.  I have not had to reinstall iTunes software.  The iTunes libarary is still complete and shows the complete list of music.  I have also ran Update iTunes Match and all of the music is on the cloud.
I cannot play the music from iTunes that is on the cloud, however the music I purchased from iTunes did download and it will plan from my computer.
The matched or uploaded music is what will not download and I can't find a command that allows me to download from Match.
Sorry if I'm not being very clear, however I do really appreciate your help and suggestions.

  • How do I delete songs from iTunes Match while keeping them in my computer's iTunes library?

So I know I'm not the only one with this problem, but I can't seem to find an answer specifically relevant to my issue. I have a playlist on my computer entitled "Christmas Music" in which I store all of my holiday songs (about 64 songs out of over 6,000). Now that the Christmas season is over, I no longer want to listen to these songs, so I have unchecked them all in my iTunes library. However, because I am subscribed to iTunes Match, the songs all still play when I have my music shuffled on my phone—iTunes Match apparently doesn't care whether they are checked in your library or not; it will still sync them across all your devices and play them during shuffle mode regardless.
The solution would be for me to somehow remove these particular songs from iCloud so they no longer play in iTunes Match. However, I would still like to have the songs in my iTunes library so that I could listen to them again in the future during the appropriate time of year. I can only seem to find instructions on how to delete the songs permanently from both my iTunes Library and iCloud, when all I really want to do is delete them from iCloud.
Is there a way for me to do this that doesn't involve permanently losing any of my songs? Please help.

Instead of removing the music from the cloud or the iTunes library why not shuffle your music using a Smart Playlist which excludes the holiday music, or tracks that are not checked. For example, use this very simple Smart Playlist:

  • I can't download songs in IOS6 from iTunes Match on my iPod and other complaints...

    1) Since I upgraded, it takes like 15 minutes to view music from iTunes match onto my iPod, then has no "download" button like before.  Instead, when I try to play a song it just DOESN'T PLAY.  What a tease!  Why is this like this?
    While I'm on the subject,
    2) Why does iTunes match replace explicit versions of albums I have with the clean versions?  That *****!  Is there a way around that, like, can I select a preference so all Beastie Boys songs are explicit?  I'm 30 years old - I think I can handle the occasional cuss.
    And finally,
    3) How to you unsubscribe from this service?  Too many complaints and not worth even $2/month.
I love Apple, but I have an iPod primarily to play music.  If it is unable to perform that function, why make it?  I've been a loyal customer for over 10 years and have purchased three laptops, an iPad, three iPhones, and had an iPod since they were introduced to the market.  I also convinced my parents and say nothing bad about your company.  Until now.  Fix this, Apple, or this poor man will no longer justify spending money on your products.

    Update:
How do you delete iTunes match?  I clicked on "do not renew" or whatever from my account, but it doesn't expire 'till March 2013.  I can't wait that long to listen to music.  I turned "match" off on all my devices on my account and closed out all itunes and settings applications just like customer support told me to do after I waited an hour to talk to no one who could help.
My BRAND NEW iPod touch 5th generation is still having the same problem.  I can only see what music I formerly had in my iTunes match account, but can't listen to any of it, including the 47 songs my library is supposed to have.
Come on, Apple.  I really just want to listen to my music, unedited, on a device I hooked up to a computer with a USB cable.
    Please help.

    iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Before you delete, find out if you'll be able to download the song you deleted again (it depends on where you live). To delete a song:
    Tap the Music app.
    Tap the Songs category.
Swipe left to right over the song you want to delete.
    Tap Delete.

Does iTunes Match stream or download songs?
On a computer, any songs stored in iCloud will stream over the air when played, though you can download them at any time by clicking the iCloud download button. iOS devices will start playing tracks from iCloud as they download and will store them so that you can listen to them later even if you don’t have a network connection. Apple TV only streams songs.

  • What happens to my music when I unsubscribe from iTunes Match?

What happens to my music when I unsubscribe from iTunes Match? Can I still access it and iTunes just stops matching new songs I add or is the whole thing not accessible anymore to download or play?

iTunes 7 will convert your existing library, but iTunes 6 and earlier will not recognize the new library format.

    This should answer your question.

  • HT204406 Uploaded CD last night. I see it in itunes match. However can only download some of the songs. Few have the Icon to download from Itunes Match, however it is not able to be clicked on. It's a lighter icon then other download ones.

I uploaded a CD last night. I see it in my ituned match on my work cpu. I can download 6 of the 10 songs. The other 4 have an Icon to download from Itunes Match, however it is not able to be clicked on. // See Pearl Jam Ten. I can download almost half the songs. The others remaining I cannot though they say they are available. I've reset the cache, I've closed and reopened Itunes, I have even turned MATCH off and then back on. Nothing is working. Please help. Also the song will not play. If I start the album, it skips over these songs.

The number of Songs that 'matched' is simply a function of the current iTunes Match service process.  It is not unusual to have multiple Songs in an otherwise perfectly matched album be uploaded - often it is very possible to find the album in the iTunes Store.
The Artwork does tend to reappear for many over a few days / weeks - however, if your library backup has all Artwork present it would be wise to save the Album Art separately and reapply to Albums not showing art work in the library grid view.
Many of the other performance issues you mention are not typical - though during the past working week or so the Apple Infrastructure has been very heavily loaded with multiples countries having service go-live symultaneously.

  • HT4914 If I download a song from iTunes Match, will it be locked by DRM to only be able to be opened by my Apple ID?

I'm reading through all of the iTunes Match literature, but there's one question that isn't addressed.
I know that song purchased from the iTunes store will be locked by DRM to only be allowed to be played by my Apple ID through iTunes (and I cna use my Apple ID on something like up to 5 devices?), and if I have songs in my library that are locked by DRM, they will not be uploaded through iTunes Match (which I assume means only songs locked by DRM tied to accounts OTHER than the Apple ID I'd be using to get iTunes Match would not be uploaded).
However, once all of the music is Matched or uploaded to iTunes Match, there's no information as to whether the music would be locked to DRM tied to my Apple ID if / when I want to download it.

Music from the iTunes Store, whether obtained in the last couple of years from the iTunes Store directly or via iTunes Match, is not copy protected. If you have old DRM tracks from the iTunes Store, they will be upgraded to the higher-quality DRM-free versions when iTunes Match uploads them as long as they were obtained through the Apple ID you are using for iTunes Match. I believe that any copy-protected tracks locked to a different iTunes Store account will be ignored by iTunes Match, though I'm not certain. Someone else may be able to confirm or refute that.
You do need your Apple ID to play or download tracks from iTunes Match, of course.
    Regards.
