Force sleep without disabling Internet Sharing

Hi,
Now that Mountain Lion includes WPA2 Personal encryption for Internet Sharing over Wireless, I've decided to try using it instead of my Airport Extreme Base Station to shre my internet access with my iPhone and notebook.  One of the benefits I hoped to gain was the ability to simply put my Mac mini to sleep to turn off my network when, for example, sleeping or at work.  That way I reduce opportunity for unauthorized attempts at access and save energy.
The only flaw appears to be that the Mac mini doesn't want to sleep when Internet Sharing is on.  I've tried using the menu item and the keystroke (Option-Command-Eject), but neither will send the Mac to sleep.  To get around this, I could simply turn off Internet Sharing when I don't need it; but:
1) This means launching System Preferences and authenticating to the Sharing pane, which is cumbersome and slow
2) Internet Sharing forgets my wifi settings when it's disabled
Does anyone know of a way to force my Mac to sleep even when Internet Sharing is enabled?

Hello Scotch,
I'm working on my MBP 15' late 2011. I use it at school (Wifi network) and at home (Ethernet cable).
I also like to turn on the internet sharing for my iphone as my room is to far from our hotspot @ home... (**** you concrete walls)
But i'm also one of the jerks that abuses his mac by almost never shutting it down and just closing the lid (same as putting it to sleep).
i found out that when i close the lid with the ethernet plugged in (& sharing turned on), my macbook does not sleep. This can be handy, but can be annoying for noises at night.
If you turn off the airport on your computer, or remove the wired internet connection, the internet sharing will stop without changing your pref's.
when you turn it back on, or plug the cable back in; the sharing starts again with the same settings automaticly.
It's not 100% what you're asking for, but it does the job in 2 clicks...
i hope it helped.
Greetings,
Wouter, Belgium.

  • Video  chat disable internet sharing

I've been searching the boards for video chat problems in iChat. Just got a MBP and that along w/ the PMG5 I've been trying some video chatting. No luck, kept on getting "no response" errors. No luck until I found one post that said to turn off internet sharing. Who'd have thought. It worked, now both are working just fine.

My intent is to disable it in a customized image to deploy to my user environment. I'm not currently restricting administrative access to my user base, so while I understand that whatever I would be able to do with such an approach would not prevent them from re-enabling it, it would keep my basic users from trying to use this feature.

  • Internet Sharing Drops

    Hi,
I posted a few weeks ago about how frustrated I am with Leopard developers for doing away with the ability to open/close ports on the firewall. The only option since then is just disabling the firewall completely.
Now I have another problem. I connect to the internet (on my macbook) via wireless, and share that connection to a PC via ethernet. Occasionally I connect more than one PC so I share it via ethernet to a 5-port Hub (to which I connect the PC's). I used to be able to switch out the ethernet cable and the connection would resume, but now in Leopard, it doesn't. I am forced to go into Internet Sharing, disable it, and enable it again for the sharing to be re-established.
Is there anyway around this? I didn't have this problem in Tiger. Under Tiger I would be able to swap the ethernet cable and the sharing would resume automatically with no issues.
    Thank you,
    Frank

  • IMac 10.8 Internet sharing stopped working after upgrade from 10.7

My iMac 27 (10.7) with Internet Sharing enabled has been working perfectly since last year. After upgrading to 10.8, I noticed the up arrow flashes and goes to regular WiFi mode. Stopping/starting the service causes the up arrow to flash again and immediately default to WiFi. I removed Ethernet and WiFi options from Network settings and re-installed which solved the Internet sharing from flashing and defaulting to WiFi mode. However, connecting to the Internet sharing from other devices (iphone/ipad) does not work and will not connect to the internet. On the iMac, I'm able to browse the Internet without issues.
If I disconnect the Ethernet cable and plug into either my MacBook or MacBook Pro and enable Internet sharing, everything works perfectly and all my other devices can use the Internet.
Now sure how to further troubleshoot and resolve this issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I should add that the iMac is running Mac OS X Server which was also upgraded to 10.8. I was looking inside the Server for security options that restricted internet access via Internet sharing. Nothing.
    Thank you!
    David

    Thanks for your answer.
Unfortunately this isn't a solution for my problem. As I understood, you showed me that your IP addresses had changed after enabling/disabling internet sharing. I checked my IP addresses after enabling/disabling internet sharing by using "ifconfig" but they are the same as set manually before.
My other strange observation regarding the ping command has gone now. After switching on internet sharing I had to disconnect the ethernet cable and plug it in again. Then the ping between both computers is working (but still not internet sharing).
Anyway ... thanks for your help!

  • Touble with Internet Sharing since latest Aiport Update

Up to yesterday I was able to share seamlessly my internet connection on my iMac using built in airport as a router. Since the last update, every time I open internet sharing is running on my iMac while connected to the internet, sharing my connection from ethernet using Airport within 30 second of my iPod been connected to my Wireless signal my internet connection die, and can no longer access the internet with my iMac or iPod. The only way to get back my internet connection is to disable internet sharing in system preference.

  • Internet sharing AirPort - Ethernet

I have a wireless access point. I'm trying to share internet from my PowerBook to Windows laptop which doesn't have WiFi. In 'Sharing' I select 'Internet Sharing' then I am choosing AirPort in 'share from' field and checking 'Ethernet' as a 'share to' destination. When I connect second laptop with ethernet cable it acquires DHCP assigned IP address from my PowerBook but cannot access internet still. At the same time PowerBook loses internet connection, and is unable to reconnect even if I disable internet sharing. It reconnects only after I re-log.
What am I doing wrong? How to share internet to the second laptop?

In Network configuration, is Ethernet above Airport in the list on the left hand side?
This list sets the priority should more than one interface be active.
You need to make sure that the Internet connection is above the ethernet connection.

  • Bluetooth internet sharing

Hi, I have found numerous threads relating to palm's missing sync being able to share my macs internet connection via bluetooth. The problem is, I'm akward and don't have a palm device, I have a sony-ericsson P910i running the symbian OS, Is there a way to share my internet via bluetooth with this device?
    regards steve

Here is a set of instructions for enabling internet sharing using Terminal commands. It's paraphrased from…
    http://www.macgeekery.com/hacks/pppoverbluetooth
In the Bluetooth preference pane's sharing tab, make a new Serial Port Service and name it bt-ppp and make it an RS-232 device. If it's on, disable internet sharing in the Sharing prefpane. Then create the following script [shown below.]
The script starts pppd on the new Bluetooth serial device you've created, then sets up IP forwarding, NAT, and the like. The en0 can be replaced with en1 if your primary net connection is AirPort. You can change the IP listed to something appropriate for your network, as well. If you put it in the range of IPs you're already using for your home network, natd is smart enough to work as a router instead of a gateway. Run as root, but—for the love of all that is holy and just—use sudo instead of su.
This is the script you must run in terminal:
    /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/tty.bt-ppp 115200 noauth local passive proxyarp asyncmap 0 silent persist :10.1.1.25 &
    /usr/sbin/sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1
    /usr/sbin/natd -same_ports -use_sockets -log -deny_incoming -interface en0
/sbin/ipfw add divert natd ip from any to any via en0
If you are unfamiliar with issuing commands from the Terminal or are not familiar with what these unix commands mean, I would suggest that you proceed very cautiously, and do more research before attempting this.

  • Sharing behind Internet Sharing NAT

I have a product demonstration that will require the internet being shared from my cell to two devices via ethernet.  One is hard-wired to the physical ethernet port.  The other is a virtual machine configured to look like a separate device on the network (VMWare Fusion 6, not that it matters).  This is the only hardware I'm allowed to bring into the facility: phone, laptop, and the one physical ethernet device.
From a topology standpoint the network would look like this:
    [Internet] -- [4G -- iPhone -- tethering wifi] -- [wifi -- MacBook Pro via Internet Sharing -- ethernet] -- <two devices, A and B>
I'm attempting to use the Internet Sharing-configured NAT on the ethernet port like a typical consumer router: 1 WAN port, 2 LAN ports.
At this point, enabling Internet Sharing allows both devices A and B to connect to the internet.  However, devices A and B cannot ping one another.
I've been digging into PF and 'pfctl' but I'm not seeing how to allow traffic between A and B.  It's as if the virtual bridge setup by Internet Sharing is unable to act as a switch for the "local" side of the NAT.
Does anyone know how to enable this functionality of Internet Sharing to allow A and B to communicate on any port?  Or perhaps have a different solution?
    Thanks for any help.
    Thomas

Happy to hear alternative ideas to this one... This is a goofy fix:
In System Preferences, be sure you have disabled Internet Sharing before trying this.
    1) Navigate to the System Preferences -> Network and click the + to add a new interface.  Make it ethernet and give it some name.
    2) System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet Sharing -> Enable whatever your internet-connected interface is to hook to "both" interfaces labeled Ethernet (despite different names, both showed as "Ethernet" for me).
    3) In VMWare Fusion, choose to bridge your VM's network interface with this second, fake, Ethernet from #1.
    4) Boot the VM.
What you should see is that the VM still gets assigned an IP address, but the configured NAT that provides the Internet Sharing ability now can see and route between two connected interfaces.  Otherwise it seems to think the single ethernet is exactly 1 device despite there being two MACs using it.
    Cheers!

  • New iMac won't sleep with internet sharing on

Less than 3 month old iMac (core i5) has stoppped being able to sleep when Internet Sharing is enabled. It took me a good while to narrow it down to that but I've confirmed that when Internet sharing is off, it will sleep as it's supposed to. When sharing is on though, not only will it not automatically sleep per the energy saver setting, it wo'nt even sleep when forced with the Apple command. The display will  turn off, but the machine does not sleep. I can tell by the facts that my wifi access on my iPhone continues to run off the iMac, and the Caps lock on the keyboard remains lit. (Too bad the blinking LED is no more on the new iMacs).
Sleep was working fine when I first got the new machine; it seems to have stopped shortly after I upgraded to Lion. (I think it may have been working for a few days after installing Lion, but I'm not positive...I'm thinking now I just thought it was asleep because the display would turn off.)
I've looked at all the related sleep posts I could find but nothing seems to address this particular issue. I know I could just turn off sharing whenver I want it to sleep, but tha't's like having to disconnect my car battery when I want to shut the car off.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jamie

Well, I'm certainly no expert at this and I'd never enable internet sharing (being too concerned about the health of my Mac and/or not knowing what untoward sites/networks/people may be seeking access), but it seems to me that having it turned on means that your computer is sharing a connection, so anytime anyone on the network seeks access, it will either wake up the Mac or cause it to stay awake. Here is an excerpt from the Help Menu (in Finder) (which has nothing to do with your question, but I found it interesting nonetheless):
If your Internet connection and your local network use the same port (Ethernet, for example), investigate possible side effects before you turn on Internet sharing. In some cases (if you use a cable modem, for example) you might unintentionally affect the network settings of other ISP customers, and your ISP might terminate your service to prevent you from disrupting its network.

  • USB hub and internet sharing stop working after sleep

    Hi,
I have a relatively new Bluestork USB hub I purchased to connect multiple USB devices I have at the same time. It used to work correctly under Leopard, but now it stops working each time the computer wakes up from sleep. I have to restart the computer for it to start working again. Both link and power LEDs stay on, even when the hub is not recognized.
My second problem is related to internet sharing. It stops working after each sleep/wakeup cycle and the only way to make it work again is to restart the computer. It used to work correctly before Snow Leopard as well.
I have all the Mac updates installed.

    Thanks Barry.
The hub is on its way to the manufacturer for after sales service...
But the issue with AirPort remains the same, even after resetting SMC.
    Some clarification:
    * It happens just after computer wakes up from sleep. Restarting solves the problem and the issue doesn't arise until computer goes standby again.
    * The whole WiFi card becomes unresponsive. It is not only the Turn Off button, but the whole functionality is stopped. The card can not be activated/deactivated and it doesn't connect to any network. If it is used for internet sharing, clients are unable to connect.

  • Internet Sharing Ethernet to WiFi disables WEP password on Mac Network?

    Hi all,
I have a curious problem, I'm trying to use internet sharing to share the ethernet connection to my iMac with my iPhone and iPad over wireless (no wifi where I live).
I can create a network with WEP fine, name it whatever, encrypt it with whatever, my iPhone can connect to it etc. but as soon as I turn the tick box for Internet Sharing on, the network loses its WEP encryption (so it's unprotected) and its name reverts back to "My Name's iMac", even if I set it up as "3423rfgdfgfdg" with WEP.
Basically turning on Internet Sharing overrides all the options I set up on the network, name, security etc and my WiFi turns into an unprotected internet source and a broadcast of my name, something I don't want where I live.
Am I crazy in thinking this is a bug not a feature and there must be some solution?
I honestly look forward to seeing what you guys think, I'm stumped.
This all used to work perfectly on Snow Leopard, I remember quirks during Lion but I got it to work in the end but I'm on ML now and it just doesn't want to work.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion but that's exactly what I'm doing.
See how after you've selected Ethernet in 'Share your connection from' and WiFi in 'To computers using' you then have to click the tick box ( http://cl.ly/image/1v191f2R1F1i ) on the left hand side to actually start the whole process?
Well regardless of whether I start it up in the 'Sharing' pref first, then set up Wireless options, or set up wireless options, then start it up in the 'Sharing' pref, whatever settings I choose get overriden as soon as I start the sharing.
The network just defaults to 'Asad's iMac', without protection. I don't understand why.
P.S. on a side note when creating networksI'm not offered a WPA2 option. Only WEP 40-bit or 128-bit. Dunno if that's connected: http://cl.ly/image/2X2g3w3y0B34

  • Disabling auto switch off Internet Sharing Lumia 7...

Is there anyway to disable the auto switch off of the auto switch off feature of the Internet Sharing on the Lumia 710?
The reason I ask, is that I want to set this up as my main Internet connection at home using the Three UK One Plan Unlimited Data plan with the phone linked via Internet Shaing to a range extender which all my family can then connect to but the Internet Sharing keeps switching off after a few minutes of inactivity.
This is obviously really annoying as I then have to go upstairs and turn on Internet Sharing again.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There are two things you can try:
    1) Keep the AC cable plugged in. It will not shut down WiFi when connected to AC, as the shutting down is a powermanagement feature as I understood.
    2) Keep the screen on (unverified, just a thing you can try to keep the lock timeout to 'forever'. I believe this is related to the powermanagement as well.)

  • Enabling 'Internet Sharing' disables my internet connection

Hi all, my desktop computer (iMac 27") is hooked up to the internet via ethernet cable/modem. Very simple configuration. I normally share the internet connection (password protected) that my other devices access via wifi.
For months this has been working just fine. today I've been having connectivity issues. I worked with my cable company to determine the issue. what finally solved it was disabling wifi, shutting down the modem & computer. Then boot the modem, afterwards boot the computer.
This worked great, I saw everything working in Network Diagnostics...
Then, I re-enabled Internet Sharing, with the same settings I've used for months, and I saw the connection disappear immediately in Network Diagnostics (Ethernet & Network Settings were green, all else red).
Rebooting the router didn't work. Restarting the computer with with wifi enabled didn't work. I had to disable wifi, turn off everything, boot modem, boot computer to get it to work again. Any time afterwards, where I enabled Internet Sharing the connection would break again.
    Please help! Thanks!

I guess he meant to give this link :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=ServerAdmin/10.4/en/c1gs9.html
Also setup DNS in the server and use that for LAN clients or you probably will have to change firewall settings to allow the use of a public DNS to-from LAN.

  • HT2020 if you have internet sharing on imac with Mountain Lion its stil problem with sleep mode ! why ???

if you have internet sharing on imac with Mountain Lion its stil problem with sleep mode ! why ???

Log a bug with Apple, with whatever details you can provide.  In the interrim, consider acquiring a router; either a repurposed x86 box running open-source networking or gateway software, or a commercial device.

  • How do I completely disable Bluetooth Sharing without disabling bluetooth completely on Mac OS 10.7.2?

I'm trying to secure my Mac Pro that is running 10.7.2 and the only thing left that I cannot get figured out is how to completely disable Bluetooth Sharing without turning off Bluetooth altogether.  Initially I thought that it was blocked in System Preferences -> Sharing unless you had an admin password, but it's the only option that is available no matter if the user is standard or admin.  Is there any way to completely disable this box from toggling on or off?

Hi Adam, I see there are no replies to ur question. I have the same problem. I can turn bluetooth sharing on or off without my admin password. Please reply if you have found a solution. thank you!
