Forcing autocomplete in location or search bar to go by first letters

When i start typing the first letter in the search or location bar, I want the results to start by the same first letter and not include results that has the same letter in the middle of the title.
For example, when I type in t for twitter.com, I get these results:
megamillions pasT winning numbers
asian salad with soy ginger vinaigreTte
You get the idea, and usually twitter is at the bottom of the list of results. I tried just history, just bookmarks, and history and bookmarks. Nothing works. I have bookmarks in my folder, but I find it quicker to just type in the first letter or two and go from there.
Thanks,
cheanny

For the location bar you can look at this pref:
You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location/address bar.
You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
For the search bar this is not possible.
There might be an extension that supports this feature, so you can search the Add-ons website.

  • Spotlight search doesn't work--for first letters H and N only! (iOS 5.1)

I have been reading a thread about spotlight not working until people updated to 5.1. Well, I have the reverse problem. I updated to 5.1 a few days ago, and now I can search for everything EXCEPT words that begin with H or N. When I try that, the enlarged letters on the keyboard freeze for 10 seconds, then disappear. Although the N or H appears in the search screen, no search results appear. I have tried shutting off various programs but that does not help. Anyone else see this problem?

Thanks, but I have done that already several time. I also closed all open applications, and I also Reset All Settings. No improvement. BTW I am using an iPhone 4.

  • How do I stop search bar from remembering searches?

How do I stop search bar from remembering searches?

You can disable saving form data if you do not want to save search terms entered in the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar.
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": "Remember search and form history"
Note that the search bars on the about:home and about:newtab pages use autocomplete=off and thus do not save this data.

  • Location/search bar always searches Google US instead of AU

Whenever I search google using the location bar OR the search bar, the results are always from google.com. But I live in Australia, and want the Australian google results. Google performs searches normally every other way.
How can I force Firefox to use the AU search?
    Thanks.

    Try [http://www.google.com.au/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q= http://www.google.com.au/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q= ] http://www.google.com.au/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
Note the space at the end, this is needed for the search to work.

  • My Location/Search Bar has no memory. It does not remember what I type in.

My Location/Search Bar has no memory. It does not remember what I type in it when I am doing Google Searches. I have had this problem for over a week now.

I guess I would call it the "Google.com" Web Site. It is the horizontal bar/box in the middle of the screen (not at the top). Whenever I would do a Google Search, whatever name I typed in that box would stay there until I manually deleted it. Now, nothing stays in that box. Can you figure out why?

  • An add-on to force firefox switch back to default search engine in search bar

    Hi,
I have a couple search engines installed in firefox's search bar. I find it extremely annoying that each time I change the search engine it remains like that even after restarting firefox. Is there any add-on that would switch back to the one that is on the top of the list (which happens to be my default search engine for navigation bar as well) every time I restart the browser?
Let me give you an example: I use duckduckgo as a default search engine for the nav bar and in the search bar. Let's say I need to find a definition for which I use wikipedia search engine. I switch to wikipedia one then. I turn off the browser and the next time I start firefox the search engine that appears in the search bar is wikipedia and I would prefer it to be duckduckgo.
I hope it isn't to vague.
    cheers,
    Omen

Easiest is to set the preferred default engine to the preferred search engine via the user.js file in the Firefox profile folder by copying the related user_pref() line to this file.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
You can search the <b>about:config</b> page for browser.search. to locate the pref(s) that you need.
    *user_pref("browser.search.defaultenginename", "Google");
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
    * Create the chrome folder (lowercase) in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder if this folder doesn't exist
    * Use a plain text editor like Notepad to create a (new) user.js file in this folder (the names are case sensitive)
    * Make sure that you select "All files" and not "Text files" when you save the file via "Save file as" in the text editor as user.js<br />Otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working user.js.txt file

  • Search button stopped working, but location\search bar is ok. Firefox 20 on Win XP.

After entering a search field, hitting the search button yields no activity. I recently upgraded to Ver 20 on Win XP Ver 5.1.
I also tried suggested solutions of resetting the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone and deleting a chromeapps file to no avail

Which search are you referring to?
*searching via the location bar (pref: keyword.URL)
*search bar on the Navigation Toolbar
*search bar on the about:home page (pref: browser.search.defaultenginename)
*other search bar (e.g. added by extension
Is that the search bar on the about:home page?
Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

  • How to set location bar search independently from search bar selected engine?

With FF 23 searching in the location bar performs a search with the currently selected engine in the search bar. I find the behaviour annoying, as I sometimes select different engines in the search bar if needed, but most often I just need quick google searches that I perform from the location bar wihout need to change the search engine.
Is there a way to customise the behaviour, so that the search in the location bar points always to one engine, independently from the engine that is selected in the search bar?

hello tadolo, you'd have to use an addon like https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/keyword-search/ to get back the old behaviour.

  • I didn't instal AutoComplete Pro (it "upgrades" your search (bar)) and i can't remove it....

It came out of nowhere, i can't disable/uninstal it...its not in Control Panel>Add/remove programs and it is not in Mozzila Add-ons. Other browsers don't have "AutoComplete Pro"
I LOVE Mozzila Firefox browser but THIS "program that upgrades search bar" or whatever it is, is anoying. Please help

It is possibly installed as a plugin, and will be shown and removable from the Windows XP control panel, but it could have more than one component and not have an obvious name.

  • How can i find the location of an app from the search bar?

I need to delete an app on my ipad3. I know it's on there b/c I can find it in the search bar. But for the life of me, I can't find where the icon is, so I can delete it. The search bar doesn't tell me where on the pad it is.
I have 10-11 pages of apps with a lot folders created with at least 6 apps within each. Been searching for hours, while multi-tasking on other things of course !

Go to settings> general> usage and delete the app from there. If the app is not there go to purchased at the bottom of the App Store screen and see if you haven't deleted it already.

  • I can't backspace at the cursor location in the search bar

When I put the cursor at the end of my search string and press back space it starts deleting from the middle. The same goes for trying to insert a word at the cursor, wherever it is. The word goes somewhere else.

I closed Firefox, and restarted. It seems to have worked in the URL bar but it still happens in the Google search bar. in going to try clearing the data.

What version of Firefox are people using? do you have any firewall or internet security software and what version?
To find out the version of software you have go to Help and then choose About. I remember reading an article a while ago about a firewall application that when they did an update, it stopped some browsers from working or something like that.
I wonder if this is something similar?

  • I cannot seem to add the search bar which should be located next to the address bar. it was removed when I updated one of the last times.

I have been trying to figure out why this search bar where you type in keywords for a google search had been removed during one of the beta updates, but this is quite annoying to not have.

    Hello,
Sometimes toolbars are missing because they are hidden, you just need to bring them back up. Visit this article to learn how to bring them back: [[Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars]]. You can learn tips and tricks at the same time.

    Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

  • Why do google search results reset to match the search bar terms when i use the back button?

Since the update to FF 23, the list of Google search results clears and the on-page search box is reset to match the address bar search box when I hit the back button to re-view the results list after checking a result.
To see this issue for yourself, set your search provider to Google and make sure Instant is on. Type a search term into the search bar and press enter. A google page appears with your results list. Now, change your search terms or conduct a new search directly from the google page (without using the FF search bar). Click on the first result in the search list, then click the back button to return to the search results so you can check a differest result. As FF goes back to the google page, it will reset the on-page search box to match the FF search bar (although you were no longer on this search) and all search results will disappear, replaced by the message "Press enter to search". Pressing enter reconducts your old search, not the one you were on.
This is incredibly maddening since searching for something requires frequent use of the back button to check through the list of search results, and then frequently trying the search again with slightly different terms. Although it sounds like a Google issue, it did not occur on the old firefox and has me wanting to revert. I tried to revert to the old search function via the "keyword search" addon, but this did not fix my issue. Is there a way to force FF to go back to the actual google search page I was just on instead of conducting a new google search from the FF search box when I hit the back button?

In Firefox 23 versions and later the keyword.URL pref is no longer supported and it is no longer possible to specify the search engine for the location bar via the keyword.URL pref.<br />
The search engine that is used on the location bar and on the about:home page is the search engine that is selected in the search Bar on the Navigation Toolbar.<br />
Current Firefox versions do not update the about:home home page until you refresh the page (future versions will do this automatically without a refresh) and that is what happens if you use the Back key.
You can install the Keyword Search extension to specify with search engine to use for the location bar and which search engine to use for the about:home page via the Options/Preferences windows of this extension, accessible via the about:addons page.
