Forgot to Eject

I bought a portable external hard drive to back up my files using time machine, and have been doing so for a few months now.
My mother didn't know that she had to eject the volume, and just disconnected it, disregarding the warning message. Now my computer doesn't recognize that my backup drive is connected, there are no backups whatsoever on time machine, and if I try to do a backup it says it has failed. I've restarted my laptop, and the hard drive itself is still lighting up and seems to be running, it just apparently isn't doing anything. Is there a simple fix for this that I'm missing?

I even tried to start up from the installation disc, with the same results.
Even the Installation disc couldn't dismount it? Ouch! That's quite unusual.
You're probably going to have to reformat it, and let Time Machine start over, but try this first:
Disconnect and power it off for several minutes. Boot up from the Installation disc (you're running Leopard and using a Leopard Install disc, right?), then reconnect it. GIve it a few moments, and see if the +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) button is enabled when you select the top line for the Time Machine disk (with the size and make). If not, try the line(s) indented under it, for the partition(s).
If not, there's a chance that +Disk Warrior+ or another 3rd-party heavy-duty disk repair app can fix it. DW is a pretty good investment for about $100, but there's no guarantee it can fix it this time. If you use it (or another such app), be certain it's compatible with Leopard -- version 4.1.1 for DW (free upgrade from 4.0 and some previous versions).
If not, or if you don't want to spend the $100 now, your only choice is to completely reformat it. See #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. This situation is one of the times when it's probably worth the time to +Zero Out Data+ in step (b) there.

  • I forgot to eject camera before disconnecting, and  somehow left five file folders on the desktop that have the same name as the device, can't open, delete, eject, or move.

Forgot to eject device(camera) before diconnect, now have five file folders on desktop(same name as camera) which cannot be opened, moved, ejected or deleted.

Where do you stand now regarding those folders? Are the photos still on the camera's memory card ( the SD card or Compact Flash)? If so, you could reconnect the camera and use your usual transfer software to perform the action once again. Do you transfer the photos straight to iPhoto? Use Image Capture? The camera's bundled software? We can start the hunt for the files by doing a Spotlight search by typing in the name of the folders (or even just the camera) to see what is already on the internal drive after the unsuccessful disconnect.

  • Forgot to eject LaCie external HD - can it be fixed?

Through my own stupidity, I forgot to eject my LaCie external HD before I powered off the LaCie (it was late and I was tired). Now it won't mount on my iMac G5. I tried to repair it using Tiger's disk utility but to no avail. I just get an "exit error" message. Does anyone know if repairing the LaCie thru Tiger's disk utility would fix it? I'm afraid to try. Or is the LaCie now a lost cause?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Eugene,
I read your post this afternoon and had to wait until I got home to try an experiment.
I turned on my Lacie drive, and let it mount to /Volumes/Lacie Disk. I then shut it off. After turning it back on, I got the "Device Removal" error that you probably got. After waiting a few moments (probably about one minute or so), the drive automatically mounted.
If yours still doesn't mount after waiting for a reasonable amount of time open a terminal window and type the following command:
    mount <return>
This should result in something like this:
automount -nsl [182] on /Network (automounted)
automount -fstab [186] on /automount/Servers (automounted)
automount -static [186] on /automount/static (automounted)
    /dev/disk3s6 on /Volumes/LaCie Disk (local)
If you have the Lacie in the list, try the following command
    sudo umount -f /Volumes/Lacie\ Disk
You will be prompted for your administrator's password. Also, the backslash is needed to force the space between the words 'Lacie' and 'Disk'. This will force the file system to be umounted.
Then try turning it on again.
    Good luck,
    Steve

    Hi Eugene,
Did the same a while ago. My LaCie was dead.
Using Data Rescue X (from Prosoft I believe) was quite helpfull. You can retrieve data from your 'dead' LaCie and fix the drive once your valuable data is rescued...

Perhaps the 'testdrive' is all you need...

  • Forgot to eject external hard drive-won't mount, doesn't show

    Hello,
I just bought a great running G-Technology (500GB) firewire/usb portable hard drive to replace an older much less stable drive. I wanted to copy the files from one to another when the imac disc just stated spinning forever. Having experienced this before I tried shutting off the old drive, but to no avail. So I panicked and shut everything down. Obviously, I didn't eject the new hard drive. After restarting I was able to get the old drive to appear on the desktop but not the new one. It doesn't show in Disk Utility and I've tried going to Go/Go To Folder/type:/volumes and where the icon of the new drive doesn't show up. I've unplugged it, restarted the computer with and without the new drive plugged in. The new drive light is on and power seems to be going to it when plugged in. What to do? I hope I didn't ruin the drive. It's less than a week old. Thanks for any help! Kris

If you are trying yo use the drive's USB connectivity, "portable" could be the key word. Some drives that must get their power from the computer's USB port ("bus-powered drives") may not get enough power under some circumstances. Their counterpart is the desktop or "self-powered" external drive that comes with its own power brick.
There are workabouts for your existing drive if it lacks its own power supply:
    1) Try a different USB port. Not all USB ports provide the same level of power. Ports on the keyboard should be avoided--they can seldom power even a thumb drive
    2) Get a self-powered USB hub. It  adds to the power feed for the drive and usually fixes the issue
    3) Get a USB "Y" cable like this:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
It uses two of the comptuer's ports for extra power.
If you are connecting with FireWire, then the drive is likely faulty.

  • Forgot to eject my Ipod before powering down PC

I accidentally powered down my notebook without ejecting my IPod Nano. Now my computer starts up with a black screen with "Press <Esc> to change boot order Press <F10> to enter setup but will not respond if I press Esc or F10. Need help!!! Thanks.

There could be bigger issues, I've unplugged my iPod countless times without disconnecting (and on several different models etc..) and have never had problems .

  • Forgot to eject my camera... now it won't find it

like the title says... i had my Digital Camera plugged into my computer and i didn't eject it.I just shut it off by accident. I got the warning from my computer to not do that and now when i plug my camera into my computer, the camera doesn't detect my computer and my computer doesn't detect my camera. So.. i don't know what to do. I am not that tech savvy but i want to get this fixed. can anyone help? thanks in advance

Probably won't help, but you could try- - in iPhoto menu choose Preferences, then General. Near the bottom it says "Connecting camera opens." Since it has already worked before it probably still says iPhoto, but you could try selecting something else and then select iPhoto again to reset it. And if connecting your camera doesn't automatically start a download, be sure the camera isn't simply listed in the left most pane in the main iPhoto window, but not doing anything. If so, click on it.

  • External Disk Drive not ejecting

I have a MacBook Air which doesn't have a disk drive built in so I bought an external one. I put a DVD in it, it all worked perfectly normal, once finishing the DVD I shut down the computer like I would normal but I forgot to eject the disk.  Its never been a problem before but now it wont eject the disk thats in there. It makes sounds that its going to but it doesn't, still plays the disk thats in there as well. Someone please help me fix this problem!

    Props to Kappy.
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Can't Eject external HD when emptying trash

This is more of an observation than a question. I am preparing my fruit (Macbook Pro) for a windows install and wanted to get rid of some extra files after I did a time machine backup. I forgot to eject the external HD before I moved a few large files to the trash and told it to empty securely. While it was trying to empty the trash, I couldn't eject the external HD, with the error that it couldn't because it was in use. When I aborted the trash emptying, the external HD ejected fine. And I tried both kinds of "ejections," i.e. moving the HD icon to the trash, and right clicking it to bring up the menu and selecting eject.

I've had this same problem, it's really irritating.
It doesn't matter what you're deleting or what you are trying to eject; as long as you are securely emptying the trash and want to eject a device you just can't. I always have to remember to eject first before emptying the trash.
It's not a big problem but it seems kinda weird that it hasn't been addressed yet, every update I've had so far it's been happening.
