Form-based authentication in JBoss using a database and JAAS

I am trying to set up simple authentication using a database. I am initially trying to secure all web resources, since my application accesses the EJBs via servlets (and is working fine without security). Later I will tighten things down so that the EJB's business methods will also have security in place.
It seems that everything is in place but I am unable to authenticate a user when I use a valid login/password combination (I am being redirected to the login error page). No exceptions appear in the JBoss console, and the database tables are populated with proper values. I'm clueless as to why this isn't working -- hopefully someone reading this can give me a clue as to what is going wrong.
Here is what I have done so far:
1) I have two tables in my database, one for the username and password, and another for roles. The database tables look like this:

2) I have added an entry in $JBOSS/server/default/conf/login-config.xml to declare an application policy which uses a DatabaseServerLoginModule. In this entry I have specified the SQl to be used by the module for selecting the password and role, following the example in the JBoss Getting Started Guide (p. 57):

    Can anyone see from the above that I have missed something, or that I have done something wrong ?
Is there a way to get more information ? All I see in the access log file are logs of the requests for the servlet, j_security_check, and the login and error pages, and it might be helpful to have a little more information as to what is going on.

I have exactly followed your configurations. However, I dont have the same database tables in my database. I used the following:

<module-option name="rolesQuery">select role from s_users where username=?</module-option>However, when I try to logon I get the following error message from jboss:
"ERROR [org.jboss.security.auth.spi.UsersRolesLoginModule] Failed to load users/passwords/role files
java.io.IOException: No properties file: users.properties or defaults: defaultUsers.properties found" although I do not want to use property files as I want to use the oracle database.
Any help appreciated!

I'm new to form-based authentication. I've been stuck on this problem for one and a half day. I set up the form-based authentication(with JDBC realm) on JBoss 3.2/Tomcat 5.0. When I visit the protected area, it did ask me for password. But it accepts whatever I input and forwards the desired page, even when I input nothing and just click on submit, it allows me to go through. No error message at all. I am in desperate need for help.

The JDBC realm is enclosed by the <engine> element. I checked the server log file, when the jboss server is started, it does load the mysql driver correctly and connect to mysql database fine. If I changed the IP of the mysql server to a non-existing one, then when I start jboss server, the server boot process will complain about connection to mysql faiure.
I guess maybe the server doesn't do the authentication by connecting to mysql and verify it when I submit the log in form. It seems the JDBC realm authentication is bypassed. I notice that even I get rid of the JDBC realm definition from the server.xml file, and test the web application. It behaves exactly the same way. It asks me for password but anything will go through even nothing.
Can anybody help me about this? I'm really stuck on this.

By the way, I did create database"field_bak" and the tables for the JDBC realm verification.
I also created the users and the roles.
But it seems like Tomcat container doesn't do the JDBC realm authentication.

Session expired message in form based authentication

Hi, i m using JAAS form based authentication on jboss for our application and we want session expired message to show in the login form when it loads for authentication after session expired.
do any one have any idea how to achive this as the application will never be able to detect that the session expired as it will always have a valid session available becoz ,When an HTTP session expires and the client makes a request to any secured resource, the JAAS subject will not be found for authorization. At this point, the security framework creates a new HTTP session, stores the target URL value in the session, and then redirects the user to the login page. After a successful login process, the user is forwarded back to the target page,
but our Web applications may need to capture these session expiration events and show some custom message to the user.
HTTP session listener doesn't work here as HTTP session listener does not allow you to create a new session.

ObSSOCookie does have session time data. Access Manager SDK can parse the cookie and can access it's own settings for max and idle session time.
Trick is, once the user is logged out, the cookie is destroyed. I suspect there is no real practical way to do this.
I have pondered the idea that you could use AJAX to communicate with a service that uses the SDK to return data about current session state - "You have 40 seconds left to get your form filled out, buddy! 39, 38, 37..."

I am using weblogic5.1 and RDBMSRealm as the security realm. I am having the following problem with the form-based authentication login mechanism. Does anyone have an idea what the problem is and how to solve it?
When I login my application and logout as normal procedure, it is OK. But if I login and use the browser's BACK button to back the login page and try to login as a new user, I got the following error message,
"Form based authentication failed. Could not find session."
When I check the LOG file, it gives me the following message,
"Form based authentication failed. One of the following reasons could cause it: HTTP sessions are disabled. An old session ID was stored in the browser."
Normally, if you login and want to relogin without logout first, it supposes to direct you to the existing user session. But I don't understand why it gave me this error. I also checked my property file, it appears that the HTTP sessions are enabled as follows,

Hehe... I actually did implement the way you implement it. My login.jsp actually checks if the user is authenticated. If yes, then it will forward it to the home page. On the other hand, I used ServletAuthentication to solve the problem mentioned by Cameron where Form Authentication Failed usually occurs for the first login attempt. I'm also getting this error occasionally. Using ServletAuthentication totally eliminates the occurence of this problem.
I'm not using j_security_check anymore. ServletAuthentication does all the works. It also uses RDBMSRealm to authenticate the user. I think the biggest disadvantage I can see when using ServletAuthentication is that the requested resource will not be returned after authentication cause the page returned after authenticating the user is actually hard coded (for my case, it's the home.jsp)

I am trying to configure Trusted authentication based SSO FOR MOBI, here are the details:
- SAP BI 4.1 SP04
- Trusted authentication with HTTP header configurred for BI Launchpad and working fine.
Now to have SSO from Mobile, I plan to leverage the existing configuration of BI Launchpad and at Mobile level, I want to use authentication type as TRUSTED_AUTH_FORM, instead of TRUSTED_AUTH_BASIC, with the approach: Trusted authentication with HTTP header.

According to your post, my understanding is that you want to know the difference of the SharePoint three type user authentications.
Windows claims-based authentication uses your existing Windows authentication provider (Active Directory Domain Services [AD DS]) to validate the credentials of connecting clients. Use this authentication to allow AD DS-based accounts access to SharePoint
resources. Authentication methods include NTLM, Kerberos, and Basic.
Forms-based authentication can be used against credentials that are stored in an authentication provider that is available through the ASP.NET interface
SAML token-based authentication in SharePoint 2013 requires coordination with administrators of a claims-based environment, whether it is your own internal environment or a partner environment.

Forcing specific clients or groups to use forms based authentication (FBA) instead of windows based authentication (WIA) with ADFS

We are have a quite specific issue. The problem is most likely by design in ADFS 3.0 (running on Windows Server 2012 R2) and we are trying to find a "work-around".
Most users in the organization is using their own personal computer and everything is fine and working as expected, single sign-on (WIA) internally to Office 365 and forms based (FBA) externally (using Citrix NetScaler as reverse proxy and load
balancing with the correct rewrites to add client-ip, proxy header and URL-transformation).
The problem occurs for a few (50-100) users where they are sharing the same computer, automatically logged on to the computer using a generic AD-user (same for all of them). This AD-user they are logged on with does not have any access to Office365
and if they try to access SharePoint Online they receive an error that they can't login (from SharePoint Online, not ADFS).
We can't change this, they need to have this generic account logged on to these computers. The issue occurs when a user that has access to SharePoint Online tries to access it when logged on with a generic account.
They are not able to "switch" from the generic account in ADFS / SharePoint Online to their personal account.
The only way I've found that may work is removing IE as a WIA-capable agent and deploy a User-Agent version string specific to most users but not the generic account.
My question to you: Is there another way? Maybe when ADFS sees the generic user, it forces forms based authentication or something like that?

I'd go with your original workaround using the user-agent and publishing a GPO for your normal users that elects to use a user-agent string associated with Integrated Windows Auth.. for the generic accounts, I'd look at using a loopback policy that overwrites
that user agent setting, so that forms logon is preferred for that subset of users. I don't think the Netscaler here is useful in this capacity as it's a front-end proxy and you need to evaluate the AuthZ rules on the AD FS server after the request has been
proxied. The error pages in Windows Server 2012 R2 are canned as the previous poster mentioned and difficult to customize (Javascript only)...

How To Use HttpUnit With FORM-based Authentication?

I'm just getting started with HttpUnit, and I'm having a problem:
How does one use HttpUnit with FORM-based authentication?
I have a Web app where I specify a number of protected URLs. When a user tries to invoke one of them in a browser, Tomcat 4.1.30 brings up a login page that I specified and asks for a username and password. The values given by the user is checked against the tomcat-users.xml file. If the user is valid, Tomcat
forwards the response from the original request. If invalid, an error page is displayed. The user is considered valid until either the session times out or the browser is closed.
Does HttpUnit have to log into the app every time I run a test? How does it manage subsequent pages after login?

I don't think that's true. HttpUnit is 100% Java and based on JUnit. HttpUnit has nothing to do with Apache, AFAIK. HttpUnit is for unit testing servlets and JSPs. Apache is a Web server. It doesn't have a servlet/JSP engine, unless you bolt Tomcat on top of it.

Any one else have problems using 'FORM' based authentication in OC4J?

Since I couldn't find any information on this from Oracle I went with the specifications from Orion.
I am using Oracle Internet Directory Server for authentication of OC4J apps. I followed Orions specs for writing and pluging in your own usermanger to make calls to OID. Everything works fine when I use BASIC authentication but when I use FORM based authentication it fails to send the browser to the original url that was requested.
The browser just displays a blank screen?
You can tell that the client is authenticated because you can just request the URL again and it's displayed without prompting for a username/password.
For the login in screen the only specs Orion gives is that your form has to have an action of 'j_security_check' and pass 'j_username' and 'j_password'.
Does oracle have another way to do this, or has anyone else experienced this and no a way to fix it?

Custom user authentication in Oc4J 1.0.2.2 is same in both Oc4J and Orion and we have tested that form based authentication works

Error re-logging in after session timeout using form-based authentication

Hello,
We have a web app configured for form-based authentication. When the session times out, we're redirected to our login page as expected. However, after re-logging in, we are not redirected to the desired page (e.g., /faces/OurMainPage.jspx) but to /afr/page_lev_idle.gif.
Do we have to do anything special for session timeouts?

Some extra information that might help:
After re-logging in and we're in /afr/page_lev_idle.gif, we hit the browser Back button (showing the login page again) and then hit the browser Refresh/Reload button and voila we're at the page we expect to be.

Hi Everyone,
Please can anyone provide me the document or the link which explain step by step procedure for configuring FBA on MS SQL Server 2012 SP1.
If let's say I have FBA enabled ASP.NET application, can I use same user database for SQL Server FBA configuration or not? and can I integrate the report in this application.

Reporting Services provides an extensible architecture that allows us to plug in custom or forms-based authentication modules. Forms Authentication is a type of ASP.NET authentication in which an unauthenticated user is directed to an HTML form. Reporting
Services can be extended to support Forms Authentication using the security extensibility interfaces available through the Reporting Services API. If you extend Reporting Services to use Forms Authentication, use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for all communications
with the report server to prevent malicious users from gaining access to another user's cookie.

Performing form based authentication with entities

Hey everyone,
Im in a major dilemma.Im trying to perform form-based authentication using entities.I have created the entity class from the database,and I used a SLSB to access the bean method via JNDI(when I tried using dependency injection,there was an exception).I also cannot use hibernate as a persistent provider.I used toplink since it is the default in netbeans 5.5.1 and it did not raise any issues.But then,I noticed that toplink is most compatible with the oracle application server,and I use sun java system application server 9.1.I have not been able to successfully perform the authentication.

there's always an exception in the server log when i try it.i use the default transaction provider toplink because use of any of the others raises an exception and my application index page never shows. please i need help? Manager password in tomcat for form based authentication

Hi all,
I have a jsp using form based authentication.I have set up the web.xml,server.xml and created my database with the various users and roles but when i try to deploy the application,it as for the manger username/password and when i enter what i have in the database it refuses to connect.
Anyone has any idea what i might be doiing wrong?

I'm a little confused. You wanted to know how to configure Tomcat for form based authentication, and I sent you an article on how to do that. Is there something more you need from me? You had offered 10 duke dollars for this post, and if there is more I can do I will help for the remaining amount, but I can't help you getting access to the Tomcat *.xml file.

am using Jbuilder 6 with tomcat.....if i run it from IDE, will the featuresi have added to the web.xml file...eg Error page be used ...or only when i deplo the app ???
