Formatting chapter titles in table of contents

I am finishing up my dissertation and am having trouble with the TOC. My chapter titles are usually a couple of lines long: e.g.
Chapter 1
Blah Blah Blah
Blah Blah Blah Blah
It looks nicer on separate lines like this. But when I insert a TOC, it's like this:
Chapter 1 11
Blah Blah Blah 11
Blah Blah Blah Blah 11
In other words, Pages seems to think these are separate headings even though it's one chapter title. Is there a way to get around this problem? I tried reducing the margins, but you can only do it for all of the chapter lines, and what I want is "Chapter X" on one line and the rest of the text on the next line and possibly following lines. How can I adjust the appearance of the TOC? Thanks.

WC,
Try breaking the lines with CTRL-Return rather than with a regular Return.

    That is not the issue.
Pages/OSX does not save files with crop marks and bleeds.
It also by default saves transparency, which is involved in a lot of Pages' better features, at a rubbishy 72 dpi resolution.
It also makes it extremely difficult to maintain mono-color like black only text, has no spot color and makes color management opaque.
It really is only meant for amateur publishing and printing to your desktop printer.
A commercial printer who is willing to use and print from Pages may have better results but at the cost of considerable micro-management which defeats the point of this "cheap" solution.

  • How to keep superscript format when generating a table of contents

    Hi,
I have a superscript ® in a title in a document that needs to be brought in the Table of contents. When I do generate the TOC, I cannot keep the superscript format in the TOC.
I could cheat and replace it manually, but there has to be a way it stays with those properties every time I regenerate the TOC.
    Any idea how?
    Regards.

There doesn't appear to be one.

  • Aligning chapter numbers in table of contents

    Hello,
In tables of contents, Pages doesn't align the chapter numbers correctly.  I get this (left alignment) :
    8.
    9.
    10.
and I need this (alignment on decimal point) :
      8.
      9.
    10.
Do you know how to do it ?  Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,  Pierre
    Mavericks 10.9.1, Pages 4.3

If that is the beginning of the line you will have a problem as you need to use an inset decimal or right hand tab and precede the text with a Tab.
You may have to export the T.O.C. as text, bring it back in and format it manually.

  • How to get chapter numbering in table of contents?

In a document I create, I use numbering for chapter titles, paragraphs and so on. They do appear in the table of contents, for each level I indicate, but in this table of contents, the numbering is not reflected. Only the first chapter has a number in front of it, all others don't.

I have the same problem in Pages 5.0. Just posted about that here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5755623?tstart=0
I am not sure about 4.0, I thought I never had any problem with it but I might have added it manual. With that stats fruhulda probably knows best.
Anyway isnt it strange that a wordeditor can't show automaticly added numbers for chapters?

  • Add section titles to "table of contents".

I am attempting to build a book from a Genealogical Generational listing that indicates the generation number at the beginning of each section. I also add that number along with the section page number at the bottom of each section. i.e. Generation 1  page  n.
Is there any way to automatically pickup the section title to add into the "Table of Contents"?
Using my present method, highlight the section title, click "Paragraph Style" (edit to my preference); will show only page 1 for all section beginning pages and seems unprofessional. alternatively, I could just leave out the page number somehow and attempt to "Tab" the first page of each section. Basically, what I would like is:
    "Generation 1
Generation 2" etc.... or something similar without page numbers and the section name is the page link to the first page of that section.

  • Format tab leader in table of contents

I have a table of contents that uses tab leaders. There are two levels of header in the table of contents. One is bolded (major headers) and one is not (minor headers). The page numbers are not bold for any entry. For example:
    Major Header.................1
    Minor Header...........2
Apparently if you make the header text bold, the tab leader is bold too. This means that the major headers have bolded tab leaders, and the minor headers have regular tab leaders. This makes them appear uneven. I would like to use regular, unbolded leaders for all entries, but I don't know how to modify the leader formatting without affecting the header text.

You can override the heading style setting.
In the major headers, type a space at the end of the text and before the tab leader begins.
Select all of the leader and the text/nmber at the end of that line.
    Toggle Bold to Off.
If your header levels use different type sizes, the leaders will still look different. You can also use the Size control in the format bar to match the size of the leader to that of the minor header.
Not thoroughly checked. You may find this unstable in use, particularly if the content in this is edited.

  • Matching Chapter Numbering in Table of Contents (TOC)

I have applied the <$chapnum> and <n+> building blocks to the paragraph styles used in my TOC, but instead of displaying the correct chapter numbers, every chapter section starts with "1".
Could someone please tell me what I need to do in order to match the TOC numbering with the book numbering?
    Thanks in advance,
    Douglas

    Douglas,
I assume that the chapter numbering works correct through all the chapters, and only the TOC numbering is wrong. Correct?
In this case you shouldn't have an own (independent) numbering definition in your TOC paragraph styles, but READ the original numbering from the respective paragraphs/chapters. You do this by adding the <$paranum> variable to the TOC reference page, so the entry/entries there should read equal or similar to:
    <$paranum> (Tab) <$paratext> (Tab) <$pagenum>
Define the tabulators for the TOC paragraph styles as if there was a numbering definition, and the number read from the chapters will appear correctly formatted in the TOC.

  • How do I add a title to my table of contents in Pages?

I am attempting to write a research paper using the paragraph styles and headings features.  I have also added a table of contents, which looks great and allows me to jump to each section of the paper.  HOWEVER, I can't seem to be able to title that table of contents page.  All I want it to say is "Table of Contents", which should be simple, right?  I don't want to put it in the header because APA formatting is very particular about how all of this stuff should look, so this title needs to really be in the body of the page.  How do I make this happen?
    Many thanks.

The TOC is a block of text.
Get your cursor in front of it by clicking or using your arrow keys, then hit return to make a new paragraph before the TOC and type your Head in that.

  • Table of contents not showing items before it

I have a document which has to follow a strict format. It must have pages in the following order:
    Cover page
    Title page
    Acknowledgements
    Table of contents
    Various other stuff
I've set up a table of contents and it's working fine, except it isn't showing items that appear before it. All I want is for the Acknowledgements page (which is immediately before the TOC) to show up in the TOC, but I can't get it to work.
Is this just a limitation of Pages? Does the TOC only ever show items that appear after it?

    pd,
Unfortunately for you, according to the Pages '09 User Guide, Chapter 3 Using Table Of Contents says the following:
Creating and Updating a Table of Contents
Each table of contents (TOC) you create using a Word Processing template lists only the content that follows it, up until the next table of contents. If you want a master table of contents for the entire document, it must be the only table of contents, and it must be at the beginning of the document.
    Sorry.

  • Multiple table of contents in document

    Hi there,
I'm new in FM8. I recently received a document in FM8. The structure of the document is as follows:
Every file of the document corresponds to a chapter. Each chapter contains a table of contents for its subheaders and paragraphs.
Table of contents (here are the chapter from 1 to 10, only the chapters)
Next is Chapter 1 which include a small table of contents with all subheads and paragraphs (e.g. 1.1, 1.1.1 and so on)
The same goes chapter 2 to 10.
    That's not all.
Chapter 7, 8, 9 and 10 are placed in different folders coresponding with chapters title. The rest of them (chapter 1 to 6) are placed all in the same folder.
For chapters 7, 8, 9 and 10 I manage to update the second table of contents (which contains subheads and paragraphs - e.g. 1.1, 1.1.1 etc.)
In the main folder which contains rest of the chapters there are TOC files for the main Table of contents and for the subeahds and paragraohs contents corresponding to each chapter. Here I have problems with updating them because when I open the book and update it only the main TOC will be updated. The problem appears when I create PDF. Because after creating PDF when I click on a chapter name in the TOC it will bring me to the chapter I want but when I click on the TOC for subheads/paragraphs nothing happened, except for chapters 7, 8, 9 and 10.
    So, to be more explicit.
When I click on chapter 7 in pdf, acrobat will send me to the chapter 7 where I find another TOC in wich if I click on subead 7.3 it will send me to the page that includes subhead 7.3. Instead if I click on chapter 4 it will bring me to the page coresponding for chapter 4 but there if I click on subhead 4.3 nothing will happen.
I will attach an example of that PDF.
The file structure looks like that:
    Chapter 7 folder:
         - book
         - TOC file for chapter 7
         - chapter 7 (same structure goes for chapter 8, 9 and 10)
    Project folder
         - book (it contains all files from chapter 1 to 10)
         - TOC file (the main TOC)
         - TOC files for chapters
         - chapters' files
Thank you. Any help will be appreciated.
    Excuse my poor written english.
    Trully yours,
    Fagaras Codrut Sebastian

    Hi,
if you got an FM book which contains separate TOCs for each chapter, it was most likely created using either
    - the Systec TOOLBOX (http://www.systec-gmbh.com/en/sites/toolbox.php) or
    - FrameScript (http://www.framescript.com/) with an itl script named "DocToc" (http://www.i-frame.itl.info/i-frame-base.html, website currently only available in German)
Without these solutions, you won't be able to comfortably handle a book like yours.

  • How to use different images in the Table of Contents?

Hello everyone, I am creating an iBook about Architecture and I would like to have different images for each Chapter in the Table of Contents... But when I add an image it automatically appears on all the other chapters, too. What am i doing wrong?

You drag the image to the screen and it replaces the placeholder image.
When you hover over the current image, don't you get the message "this is a placeholder . . ." under your mouse pointer?
I think the documentation states that the new image must be jpg or png, but a Photoshop image seems to work too.
In portrait mode, only one image shows at the top of the list of chapters, and that can be changed too.
But in landscape mode, all of the separate chapter images can be accessed by clicking the littel dots at the bottom of the screen when at the TOC page.

  • Generating table of contents by chapter number and title in reports

    Hi all,
how can i generate a table of contents in reports?
I will definitely need the chapter numbers and their respective titles to do that.
Are there specific templates to follow in order to do that?
    Thanks.

Your profile lists 10.6.2 as your OS version. If this is true, it may be the source of problems with Pages. Keeping both the OS and iWork apps updated will avoid some problems.

Are you using Microsoft word?  Microsoft thinks the users are idiots. They put up a lot of pointless messages that annoy & worry users.  I have seen this message from Microsoft word.  It's annoying.
    As BDaqua points out...
When you copy information via edit > copy,  command + c, edit > cut, or command +x, you place the information on the clipboard. When you paste information, edit > paste or command + v, you copy information from the clipboard to your data file.
If you edit > cut or command + x and you do not paste the information and you quite Word, you could be loosing information.  Microsoft is very worried about this. When you quite Word, Microsoft checks if there is information on the clipboard & if so, Microsoft puts out this message.
You should be saving your work more than once a day. I'd save every 5 minutes.  command + s does a save.

  • How can I include, in the table of content, a title that I have put on a shape?

    Hello all,
    1. I have a table of content
    2. I have added shapes
    3. I wrote text (titles. subtitles) on the shapes
    4. They do not appear in the table of content.
    5. They only appear in the table of content if they are not on a shape.
    Pages 5.5.2
    Can you help?
    Law

    Hi Law,
Text in a shape or a text box will not feature in the table of contents.
To get a colour behind your titles, type them into your document (not a shape). Format as Heading or some other paragraph style the TOC will recognise.
Select the title text and Format Panel > Text > Font > Gearwheel > Advanced Options.
Choose Character Fill Color and choose a colour from the palette (left) or colour circle (right).
Example Titles (all on the same page for a smaller screen shot).
Chapter 3 (in a coloured Text Box or Shape) does not appear in the TOC:
    Hint for cheats :
To give the titles a wider Character Fill Colour, add some Tab characters before and after.
    Regards,
    Ian.
