Forms 6i and UTF-8

I think the answer to this is going to be painful, but here I go.
I have upstream and downstream systems inserting into and selecting from my database. Every system supports UTF-8 except mine. There is only ONE COLUMN in ONE TABLE that needs to be transmitted in UTF-8. I thought the easy answer was to use an NVARCHAR2 column. BUT, I'm using Oracle Forms 6i and it doesn't support NVARCHAR2 datatypes.
So what's my option? Do I have to convert the ENTIRE database to use UTF-8 or is there a way to get one column to use it or even to get a single Forms session using it. I know I can get forms to use it, but without the database using it, it does no good.
thanks!

are you working with English or some other languages?
If you want limited support then try with SQL Convert or Compose functions in ur INSERT updates

There are standards from for CHARACTER encoding.
See below for a brief description:
UTF-16 (16-bit Unicode Transformation Format) is a variable-length character encoding for Unicode, capable of encoding the entire Unicode repertoire. The encoding form maps code points (characters) into a sequence of 16-bit words, called code units. For characters in the Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) the resulting encoding is a single 16-bit word. For characters in the other planes, the encoding will result in a pair of 16-bit words, together called a surrogate pair. All possible code points from U0000 through U10FFFF, except for the surrogate code points UD800–UDFFF, are uniquely mapped by UTF-16 regardless of the code point's current or future character assignment or use.
UTF-8 (8-bit UCS/Unicode Transformation Format) is a variable-length character encoding for Unicode. It is able to represent any universal character in the Unicode standard, yet the initial encoding of byte codes and character assignments for UTF-8 is consistent with ASCII (requiring little or no change for software that handles ASCII but preserves other values). For these reasons, it is steadily becoming the preferred encoding for e-mail, web pages, and other places where characters are stored or streamed.

• Content-Type=application/x-www-form-urlencoded with UTF-8 data which servlet fails to interpret correctly .

My Environment is Weblogic 6.1 SP2 on WIN2K.
I have an HTTP client sending an HTTP request with

According to Servlet spec. 2.3 sec. SRV.4.9 Request data encoding, cut pasting
from spec below:
"Currently, many browsers do not send a char encoding qualifier with the Content-Type
header, leaving open the determination of the character encoding for reading HTTP
requests. The default encoding of a request the container uses to create the request
reader and parse POST data must be “ISO-8859-1”, if none has been
specified by the client request. However, in order to indicate to the developer
in this case the failure of the client to send a character encoding, the container
returns null from the getCharacterEncoding method.
If the client hasn’t set character encoding and the request data is encoded
with a different encoding than the default as described above, breakage can occur.
To remedy this situation, a new method setCharacterEncoding(String enc) has been
added to the ServletRequest interface. Developers can override the
character encoding supplied by the container by calling this method. It must be
called prior to parsing any post data or reading any input from the request. Calling
this method once data has been read will not affect the encoding."
Q1. Should not <input-charset> related settings in weblogic.xml for a servlet
helps container actually do some thing like setCharacterEncoding(String enc) on
HTTP Request before it call the servlet?
Q2. If not then that would mean I have to programatically call setCharacterEncoding(String
enc)to correctly interpret my HTTP Request?
Q3. If the answer to Q1 is "yes" then I will assume that getInputStream() or getReader()
methods on the HttpServletRequest will give the chacter in the client encoded
format which in this case is UTF-8, i.e I will get "Zoë" as in this example. Am
I correct here?

Stefan,
Thanks for the information. I have the following question then.
The Webserver I am interacting with does not recognize user and password provided in the channel. It accepts user and pwd in payload and in application/x-www-form-urlencoded content type only.
Sample Raw Post that server server requires looks like this
User=yourname&Password=yourpassword&INPUT_XML=%3C%3Fxmlversion%3D%221.0%22standalone%3D%22no%22%3F%3E%3CDELIVERY%3E%3CMESSAGE%3E%0D%0A++++%3CDESTINATION_ADDR%3E%2B447900570205%3C%2FDESTINATION_ADDR%3E%%3C%2FMESSAGE%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3C%2FDELIVERY%3E%
What i have done is that constructed the post manually in Java code in un encoded form and expected the HTTP Adapter to do the encoding. Having done this, the HTTP Server is able to scuccessfully parse the xml except for & and < , > chars which err out as invalid XML.
Is there an elegant way of doing above scenario using XML post and standard HTTP Adapter.

Sudharshan N A

• Accented characters and UTF-8

Hi all,
I have a problem with accented characters. I read that Plumtree 5.0 is completely Unicode enabled and all HTTP responses from remote web services are converted to Unicode (UTF-16). So the portal sends back to the client browser all pages in UTF-8.
We have a lots of portlet (ASP and JSP) that write data in external DB, for example SQLServer. When I fill an html form with accented characters that have to be saved in our DB, they are saved in UTF-8 because the gateway converts the HTTP response. We want that the data are saved as if we don't use the portal (without conversion). I tried to change the Charset with the ASP code (Response.Charset). This solves only the problem of displaying the right characters in the browser.
Could you explain me better how the portal make the conversion and how can I solve my problem?
Thank you very much,
Alberto Marchiaro

It might be helpful to clarify a few things first: 1. Both Java and VB Script will store strings in UTF-16/Unicode. If you have some code in your ASP file that looks like this: Dim strDatastrData = Request.Form("SomeName") then if you were to examine memory for the variable strData, you would see 16 bit characters. The same is true for Java. 2. String data is almost never sent over HTTP as UTF-16/Unicode. 3. Both Java and VBScript perform an implicit character set transcoding when reading string data out of a request or when writing string data out to a response. 4. ASP will perform the transcoding according to the value of the Session.CodePage value. If you have Session.CodePage to 65001, then ASP will expect the string data to be in UTF-8 and it will transcode UTF-8 in the request into UTF-16 in VB Script. Similarly, a Session.CodePage value of 65001 will cause "Response.Write" to convert UTF-16/Unicode into UTF-8. 5. All of the above is separate from how Java or VB Script interact with the database. Generally speaking an ASP module will use ODBC to communicate with the database. The ODBC layer knows that VB Script keeps strings in UTF-16/Unicode. The ODBC layer will perform the proper conversion into the database character set. Plumtree always recommends using UTF-16/Unicode in the database. You can do this relatively easily by declaring your database columns using the "N" datatypes such as NCHAR and NVARCHAR. However even if you using some other character set, the ODBC layer should always properly transcode from VBScript. The importantly thing to remember is that data that is sent over HTTP is never written directly to the database without going through some ASP or JSP code. Since the ASP and JSP code always uses UTF-16/Unicode, there should never be any issue with how the data is sent over HTTP. Here is an explanation for how Session.CodePage, Response.CharSet and Session.LCID work in ASP:****************************************************
1. Response.CharSet
2. Session.CodePage
3. Session.LCID
Here is an explanation of these properties and why they are important to non-English ASP gadget writers:
1. Response.CharSet
This property will cause the HTTP contentType header to be set with the specified character set. The HTTP header is the best way to tell the recipient what the character set is. The Plumtree HTTPGadgetProvider will read the ContentType header and then know how to properly trancode the portlet text into UTF-16/Unicode. Here
is an example of how to set this property:
Response.CharSet = "UTF-8"
2. Session.CodePage
This property tells the ASP engine which character set to send text in. Please remember that all text is encoded in Unicode on the Web Server. It only gets turned into the client character set when it is send down to the client. The Session.CodePage tells the engine which codepage to transcode into when sending down to the client. Please note that this property is an "integer" property not a string. So you have to know the number of the codepage that you would like to transcode into. Here is an example of how to use this property:
Session.CodePage = 65001
3. Session.LCID
This property tells the ASP engine which locale is being used. The locale is used by various VBScript functions such as FormatDateTime in order to format the date correctly for the locale. If the locale is a French locale, then the date will be formatted according to French rules. The locale does not really effect the character set, but if the portlet writer is going to the trouble of setting the other properties, then they should also set the LCID too. Here is an example of how to set this property:
Session.LCID = 1041
Please note that the examples that I am using are the appropriate examples for Japanese and UTF-8. The values for these properties are different for different character sets. For example, for ISO-2022-JP, the values would be:
Request.CharSet = "iso-2022-jp"
Session.CodePage = 50220
Session.LCID = 1041
A very helpful URL to figure out the values to use with Request.CharSet and Session.CodePage is the following:

• Upgrade from 11i to R12 - Custom Forms,Reports and Workflows

Dear Community Friends,
We are planning for upgrade from oracle apps 11.5.10.2 to R12.
We have custom Forms,Form Libraries,Reports and Workflows.
Kindly provide me for approach on how to migrate Custom form libraries, reports and Workflows.
I beleive, this thread will exists as one shot point for custom forms, reports, workflow upgradation from 11i to r12 with detailed steps.
I know that many links exists here in the forum for all the above objects mentioned, but still from all those i am able to get a clear picture for oracle forms but not for custom form libraries ,reports and workflows.
Also, this post will provide a low level, practical picture of the steps for those who are in line with this.
Links i have read for all these in our forum are:
For Custom Forms,
Re: Planning to upgrade from 11i to R12
Re: Custom forms: After upgrading 11i to R12
ofcourse,'n' number of links exists providing metalink notes also.
Hussain,Helios and some others also has given many updates regd this.
For custom workflow upgradation,
Upgrade Workflow 11i to R12
Workflow Upgrade
Workflow Upgrade
For reports, links mentioned the below metalink notes:
Do Not Compile EBS R12 Reports Using rwconverter.sh or Reports Builder from IDS 10gR2 [ID 786794.1]
Using the OracleAS 10.1.2 Forms and Reports Builders with Oracle Applications Release 12 [ID 444248.1]
Per my understanding, after searching in many threads,i am here by summarising the practical low level steps for custom forms migration
Please correct me,if i am wrong.
1) Download the Forms(.fmb's) and all PLL's(all the PLL from resource folder in AU_TOP) into a Local Machine Folder
2) Open the forms using Forms Developer 10G and connect to DB
3) Compile by clicking compilein Forms Developer and then save it.
4) Upload the Saved Forms(.fmb's) into the new R12 server(system) in the respective custom paths(paths similar to 11i Server)
5) Compile all the forms using the command like below(example command is shown below or f60 gen commands or frmcmp.sh utility) in the respective custom form paths,
this will generate the .fmx's.
frmcmp_batch module=FORMNAME.fmb userid=apps/apps output_file=FORMNAME.fmx compile_all=yes

6) Open the form and check in R12 instance
As per my understanding for custom form libraries,we can just copy paste the PLL's from 11i server to R12 server (Please correct me,if i am wrong)
Can anyone please help me out in custom reports and custom workflows.Sorry that,i could not get a practical and clear picture for reports and also for workflow even after referring many threads and metalink notes mentioned.
As for reports, some says that Developer Suite 10g can be used and .rdf can be used in R12.
Some says that reports should be converted to XML published as reports does not exists in R12.
So,i am not clear on this.
Thanks,

So,i am not clear on this. You can still use RDF files in R12, and just follow the approach you mentioned above, and you do not have to migrate them to XML publisher (though it is recommended, but this can be done after the upgrade as an enhancement task).
For custom workflow, you need also to do the same thing, open them using workflow builder and make sure they work in R12 (correct the code if required and save them again in R12 once they work properly).

• Occasional ora-6502 using forms 6i and 10g

Hi all.
We have been experiencing some weird and unexpected ora-6502 errors in some of our forms 6i modules running against 10g (rel 1 or 2).
Forms modules are correctly functioning and for some reason, one day an ora-6502 error suddenly pops up.
Now the weirdest thing is that after you put some messages on the trigger, so you can track down where the error is coming from, it disappears.
I know that this may sound hard to believe, but it has happened several times. All we do is put some message built in, recompile all, and the error is gone (for a while).
So my questions are:
- Is this a known issue beween forms 6i and 10g Db?.
- Is there a patch on Metalink ( we use Forms [32 bits] Versión 6.0.8.26.0 (Producción))
- A workaround?
and most important
- Have anyone been exposed to a similar situation?
Regards, Luis ...!

Now the weirdest thing is that after you put some messages on the trigger, so you can track down where the error is coming from, it disappears.Sounds like the form has not been "clean compiled" against the server on which it is running. Try a "Compile All", which causes all previously compiled program units to be compiled fresh.
Or even better, clean out all the compiled code from your fmb before compiling the fmb on the server where it runs.
See this topic: Re: Why does this happen - find ';', replace with ';'?

• Form 6i and 10g DB

i want to use Oracle text (context index) for searching and oracle text is the best way .. but not im using form 6i and DB 10g R 2. my question is is thier any problem i will face it later while doing my system using context index ?? for example i will use CTXddl package .. can i use it in form 6i or i cant ???
regards,

The first and most significant problem you are faced with is that Forms 6.0.8 is not supported to be used with Oracle 10.2.x. The second problem is that Forms 6.0.8 is obsolete and not supported any longer. Consider upgrading to the latest version before developing new applications. The latest version is included in Developer Suite and Application Server 10.1.2.0.2 (10.1.2.3 with the latest patches installed).

• How can I uninstall a damaged installation of Fusion - PFRD 11.1.1.6.0 - Oracle Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer

Hello,
I am upgrading EBS 11i to 12i, Discoverer 4 to 11. After completing ebs installation and upgrade successfully, I am now working on the Oracle Fusion piece of the upgrade.
I have installed
1. JDK
2. Repository Creation Utility - RCU (schema)
3. Weblogic - WLS 10.3.6
4. Oracle Fusion - Discoverer 11g Release 1 Patchset 1 11.1.1.2.0 PFRD
5. Oracle Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer 11g Patchset 11.1.1.6.0 - Patchset 13517084
6. Executed config.sh and it failed with but continued.
During the Configuration of Oracle Fusion with config.sh there was failure at with "fails at creating data sources" and accidentally proceeded and all seem to go well until after shutting down the servers when Weblogic Managed Server is unable to start.
The start log indicated: "weblogic.store.PersistentStoreFatalException: [Store:280105]The persistent file store "_WLS_WLS_DISCO" cannot open file _WLS_WLS_DISCO000000.DAT." and I have been unable to find a solution for this error?
See log file error at https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15497130/oracle/ebs11/startManagedWebLogic.sh_nohup.out
If re-installation is my only option, then what are the steps to uninstall, and which components do I have to uninstall given that I had upgraded all the schemas involved?
Mathias

Hey,
You can always change the JDBC datasources in the Weblogic admin console . but have you recorded what is the specific error you got during the datasources creation .
I prefer...create a new user , give him sysdba privillages . Start RCU and create the DEV_DISCOVERER , DEV_DISCOVERER_PS schemas (prefix is your choice)
The Admin server will start . so go to admin console .
click services -> Data Sources
Check the data sources you have . edit each datasource and update the connection pool information .
after this you can start the Managed server WLS_DISCO
i believe this will solve this .........
if you still get issue again . you can try the link Using the WebLogic Persistent Store
Thanks

• Form 1099R and W-2 Discrepancies

Hello,
We encountered two separate problems in using the Tax Reporter
(transaction code PU19).
1st problem:
The Federal Income Tax Withheld in Form 1099-R only showed 10 months
worth of data but in Forms 945 and 1096, it reflected the correct
Federal Income Tax Withheld.
2nd problem:
Tax Reporter was run on two separate days, for the same field
selection. In Form W-2 State and Local Summary, it returned two
different values for Federal Income Tax Withheld.
To check the values for the Federal Income Tax Withheld, the Wage Type
Reporter was run and reflected another value.
We would greatly appreciate the help.
Thanks and Have a nice day!

Hi,
To use SAPScript fomrs, modify table V_T5UX7.
- Identify W2 forms you use.
- Delimit PDF forms to past dates,
- Delimit sapscript forms to current (eg: 01/01/2000 - 12/31/9999)

• ESS / MSS - is there a way to view Histories of FORMs submitted and processed?

Hi,
We're implementing the ESS / MSS RDS EP 6 (version 3.606 SAP Enterprise Portal scenario).
The project also includes the custom development of a number of Forms that will be integrated into ESS / MSS via iViews.
The customer requires a "HISTORY View" of FORMs for the ESS and MSS users.
It is the historic FORMs themselves that they want to be able to display - or as much of the Key information from the Forms that they can identify specific Form submissions (and not the related Workflows for these forms).
I'm told that there is no HISTORY view for Forms. The history functions for Workflows (in the UWL) is not really suitable for users but only for more technical analysis of workflows.
Does anyone know of a way of getting these history views of Forms without resorting to a custom development? e.g. is there a standard Report or a way of enabling Histories to be maintained and accessible?
Kind Regards
Alan

Hi Alan,
I think the best we could get is Process Browser application.
Can you refer this link and see if this helps.
Also try the WD Application - ASR_PROCESSES_DISPLAY.
Thanks

• Install and config issues with Oracle Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer

For a while now I've been struggling with migrating a testing database to a newer version.
And right now I'm pretty much stuck at trying to configure Oracle Portal, Forms Reports and Discoverer
What I've got:
Windows server 2008 R2 64bit
Oracle 11g database
Java 6u27 64bit
JDK 1.6 64bit (using this after 1.7 ended up throwing out bugs while trying to start a weblogic server)
JDK 1.7 64bit
Weblogic 10.3.5 (or so i think - I've installed from the wls1035_generic.jar from the oracle website)
PFRD 11.1.1.2 with 11.1.1.3 installed over it, installed without config
and a hanging up configuration
Basically I've been trying to install PFRD (only forms, reports and enterprise manager from it actually) but it kept failing once it got to the configuration stage, so I installed without config, applied 11.1.1.3 and now trying to run the config manually with the good old \bin\config.bat
Result - the config froze for approx.18 hours then failed
There isn't much useful info I could deduct from the logs, mostly just says one or more configuration parts failed. At one place it mentions trying to set up a domain and starting up an adminserver for it - and apparently that's where it hangs up and finally times out and fails.
I'm a little clueless what to do about it as the logs don't say anything else of use I could understand. Any ideas there?

Trying the step by step, the only difference between that and what i do seems to be the file copying (which I can't do - there is no windows\extra\ directory anywhere, the files mentionned seem to already be on their places and either only there, or exactly the same) and clistering
So far the news ain't good - the config process hangs on creating domain ->Step Creating Domain started
It isn't frozen per se - the process doesn't use up any processor time, memory consumption within bounds, it reacts to button clicks and all..it just doesn't do anything concerning the said domain
the last thing the .out file shows:
Creating a new AdminServer Object ...
AdminServer port is 7002

I'm kinda paranoid about the double backslash in the dll path, but other than that no clue as to why the domain doesn't set up
the other link you mentionned seems to have no relevance yet
does that clear up anything for you though?
..can the lack of SOA suite have anything to do with the problem?

• NLS_LANG value that suits Forms 10G and Database 11G wanted !

I can't believe how bad is to install Oracle Database and Oracle Forms on the same Windows Vista machine!
I had a problem in Oracle Forms 10g that prevents many items in the Form Builder menu from appearing in English Language and also prevents anything in the web-based forms runtime from appearing in English. I searched the forum for a solution and found that I have to set a NLS_LANG value in the environment variables equal to the following: AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1256.
I did this and my Forms builder looked great. Everything in english with no problems. But now what ?! The Oracle Database itself refused to connect from all clients! It refused to connect from Forms Builder, SQL Deeveloper, and even from SQL PLUS! The error given is: ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified.
It seems that what I exactly need is a NLS_LANG value that will satisfy both Oracle Forms 10G and Oracle Database 11G that both are installed on the same Vista machine. The question is: What could this NLS_LANG value be?!
Thank you in advance

If you have connected to the database on which the form is based, prior to running the form from the Builder, the uname and password will automatically be passed in at startup and you will not be prompted.
If you would rather hard code a username and password, enter it in formsweb.cfg. For example:
SYNTAX:
userid=<USERNAME>/<PASSWORD>@<DB NAME>
EXAMPLE:
userid=scott/tiger@orcl
Remember that this change will only impact runtime and have no effect on the Builder.
