Forte and the STL
Hello all,
I have a question regarding fortes compliance with the standard regarding the STL. Does it.
For example, just trying to compile simple code such as...
#include <memory>
int main(void)
std::allocator<char> a;
char *p;
a.destroy(p);
return 0;
Will not compile (ignore that the code is bad). The error msg comes back with destroy not a member of std::allocator. Checking my trusty copy of the standard it sure should be. What is going on? There are other places that the header files do not seem to be inline with the standard ie reverse_iterator<> (one template param of type iterator).
Thoughts?
Any help would be great because I'm not sure I can use forte if it is missing huge chunks of the standard.
Mike
Thanks for the response but I'm not sure what your suggesting,
Is it to use destroy() instead? If so then I still have the same problems-changing lots of code to support a non-conforming compiler. Or do you think that destroy() is the code that I'm using? I'm referring to std::allocator<T>::destroy() found in ISO 14882 [lib.default.allocator] (pg. 369) and in The C++ Programming Language (pg 567) Since you quoted me page numbers on the other post :)
I know this seems trivial but there are numerious places where forte seems to use a pre-standard implementation so changing it all becomes non-trivial fast-for example, the lack of support for partial template specialization (I think) causing them to apparently use the old version of std::reverse_iterator.

I saw an article briefly explaining the forthcoming Forte Web Kit.
Is there any more information available somewhere? The article
stated that a few lines of code will be capable of transforming your
app into a Web Application. How will it handle ArrayFields, window-
nesting, and some of the other aspects of Forte that HTML/the
Web does not support? What is the nature of the JAVA
integration? Release date?

NSAPI, C++ and the STL string class
Hi,
I have a NSAPI service function written in C, but I would like to use C++ in order to take advantage of the STL string class. I am using NSAPI 4.1 and Solaris 8 and compiling with gcc 3.2. Everything compiles fine, but when I start the server, I get an error message stating that symbol _ZNSaIcED1Ev can not be found.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
MikeWell, I assume that you are trying to write a Native method. In this case, both the input string and the output string are jstrings. To operate on them in C you will have to convert them to c-strings - probably null-terminated strings.
The JNI documentation includes discussions of jstrings and conversion methods. -
Re: (forte-users) Forte and CORBA question
Hi,
The discarding the Java variable that references a distributed Forte object
doesn't cause that the distributed object will be reclaimed. In Forte client
you can use ReleaseDistReference() of the current partition (task.part) to
free the remote object. For Java client, you can implement the following
solution:
- define a method ReleaseMyObject() in the SO you are using to get the proxy
to the dist. object. As parameter for it use something that can identify
your object (attribute).
- your SO has an array or hashtable with your distributed objects, every new
object is added to it.
- in the implementation of ReleaseMyObject() find the object to release in
the array and call ReleaseDistReference() for it,
- from the Java client, call the ReleaseMyObject() for the object that is
not more needed.

Hello Dave,
do you use a copy return or copy parameters in this method ?
If not, then maybe Forte is unable to garbage-collect this object because
it is forever
a proxy which only the server-partition may be able to drop it from memory
(object=NIL).
Try this and let us know what happens.
Hope this helps

The problem is memory utilization. Each time I obtain

object on an NT box). Eventually, if I fetch enough
objects, the server will crash due to lack of memory.
It seems that Forte never reclaims the memory, even
though I'm not using (and don't have a handle to) this

The objects are very small. In fact, I created a test
Forte SO with one method, getObject(); which returns a
distributed object with a single attribute. I then
have a Java client access the getObject() method
repeatedly - discarding the reference to the object
after each iteration. After a short while, the box
will come down.
Any thoughts?

Subject: (forte-users) Forte and Oracle Parallel Server
I'm interested in learning if anyone knows of any
successes using Forte with Oracle Parallel Server. I
would like to use the two together for a new highly
available system, but am having trouble locating
references sites which use them in a production
environment.
Thanks in advance.

Forte and windows98???
Hi Forte Experts
Can we use forte with windows98, and if so: which versions?
limitations? problems?
The reason for asking such a dumb question is, that we just installed
a brand new 'super-specifications' pc with windows98 and now we have
userwindows that hangs, ftexec'windows that will not appear etc,
and I would like to know, if this is a forte problem, windows98- or
HARDWARE problem. We do not see any of those problems on
windows95 on a more modest pc.
The PC looks nice and has got almost any widget or card you can imagine...
You name it - we got it, it just doesn't work, but it sure looks nice in the sysspec.
Any positive or negative experience with windows98 and forte would be a
great help to track down the problem...

KAD/DenmarkHi all,
Forte on Windows98 does not appear to be a very good combination!
For a Forte 'supported' platform it behaves very poorly.
Unfortunately our installation base 'upgraded' to Win98 not long after
we rolled out our first application and the 'hanging' problems then
started to appear. This was experienced up to a couple of times a day
by some users - although it appears to happen randomly. Ie; one machine
would be fine one day and hang a couple of times the next day - for no
apparent reason.
We have tried everything we could think of (as well as everything that
Forte tech-support could think of) but all without much success. We
have also been running the application on Sun, WinNT and Win95 boxes and
these platforms don't show the same problems. This ruled out any
application specific problems.
The one thing that has provided us with some relief is to 'upgrade' to
the Second Edition of Win98. This has been more stable although we
still do experience the hanging problem - just not as frequently. This
unfortunately is still not providing a very reliable platform as when
the user does experience a 'hang' they usually have to reboot their
system as it has usually frozen all running applications (as well as
Windows).
Unfortunately Win98 Second Edition appears to be a bit flaky other ways
(not necessarily relating to Forte) and often doesn't shutdown properly
at the end of the night.
Anyway, I could go on like this for a while - but I won't.
I think it is sufficient to say that I would NOT recommend anyone moving
to Win98 as a platform to run a Forte application.
If anyone else has had any experiences with Win98 and Forte (both good
and bad) I would love to hear from you. It doesn't look like we'll be
moving from Win98 for a while yet so anything anyone can offer would be
greatly appreciated!
Regards,
Cameron Clark.

Latest Address and the Previous Address in the last 30 days
Morning folks.
I need to find out all Customers whose Address changed based on the Effective Date. The Query should be based as of Effective Date 01-JUN-12 and not SYSDATE. So, we want to check the MAX(effective_date) is <= 01-JUN-12 and the Previous Address's Effective Date is between 02-MAY-12 and 01-JUN-12 (30 days). This would suggest that an Address has changed. For argument sake, the Zip Code is enough to differentiate that an address has changed for now.
Based on the data, I only want to pick up Customer 1002 but not 1001, 1003. As for Customer ID 1003, even though his/her address changed in the last 30 days, we are not interested as the Address effective 1st June was good for a long time.
Also, even though the Address for Customer ID 1001 changed twice in that period, I am only interested for the latest two addresses.

Re: Forte and Dialup PPP connections
Subject: Forte and Dialup PPP connections
Priority: normal
Reply-to: "Dexel Durban" <[email protected]>
We want to run Win 95 on our client forte machines. Currently we're
using Forte v2.0E and MS TCP/IP.
Everything works fine in the LAN enviroment, however these client
machines have to run at remote sites, and therefore will need to use
modems with dialup PPP links.
The catch with the dialup procedure is that they will dial into a box
which verifies their username/password and then dials them back (for
security reasons) and sets up the PPP conection.
The only software that seems capable of setting up a PPP connection
after someone dialing your machines, is a product called Fastlink which
we're using.
After we've set up the PPP connection and run forte it works 100%,
however if we come out and run forte again - it can't establish the
connection to the host.
What we've deduced from this is that possibly :
1) MS TCP/IP isn't cleaning up after itself after the first
connection
2) The problem lies with Fastlinks ODI driver.
My questions are :
1) Has anyone managed to get forte running over a modem using PPP,
with the call-back verification procedure outlined above ?
2) In the Forte doc's it says that Forte is only compatible with Win
95 and MS TP/IP no other TCP/IP stack - is this true, or has someone
managed to get another stack working ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated !

I have some similiar problems that basically were solved by a fix to one of the
ip executables. For this particular situations I was using Lan Workplace for DOS
Version 5 and just visited their web site and looked for a description similiar
to the problem I was having to determine the right patch. It sounds like when
you let go of your connection that the com port is probably still being held and
not beig released. I could be wrong but.... are you getting any other type of message?Thank you for your answer, David.
We are considering the splitting of one VMS partition into several ones to
streamline some functionality. Currently the communication between the
implied components is handled within the existing partition. By splitting it
we are expecting some performance loss due to interpartition communication
overhead and, since the number of messages expected will be high, we were
wondering if they will be needlessly going through the whole network stack
or transferred directly via socket IPC, as can be done in the Unix boxes.
The answer would help us tune-up the system by focusing at the right
parameters during testing of the new setup.

This is what I got today:
Statement of Direction
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Forté 4GL(tm) Product (formerly the Forté Application Environment)
Product Context
· Forté 4GL is an award-winning, proven product with many unique
advantages for building enterprise business systems that are distributed,
that involve the integration of existing business systems as well as new
functionality, and that target heterogeneous runtime environments.
· Forté 4GL is recognized by Gartner Group as the most successful
Enterprise Application Development Tool.
· The Sun Microsystems, Inc. (SMI) development tools group (formerly
Forté Software, Inc.) has a strong internal commitment to Forté 4GL. Forté
Fusion is written with, and is currently being enhanced with Forté 4GL.
· The SMI development tools group intends to actively enhance and
promote Forté 4GL for the indefinite future. The best opportunity for
attracting new customers is to leverage the ability of Forté 4GL to easily
build powerful shared business services (server components) that can be
accessed by non-Forté clients (e.g., browsers, Java clients) and that can
easily integrate with new and existing business systems.
· The product enhancement plan calls for continuing to issue
incremental releases approximately twice a year. To speed the release of new
functionality, new features will be included with "preview status." This
means that the overall release can support production deployments, but that
the features marked "preview" are certified for development and demos.
· The planned contents of the next two releases are indicated below.
Users should not expect any features other than those on the list. The
contents of subsequent releases will be determined approximately a year in
advance.
· SMI has retained the Forté field sales organization as an
independent unit whose primary product offerings are Forté 4GL and Forté
Fusion. Continued volume sales of Forté 4GL remain the foundation of our
business plan.
Mid-Year Release
· Tentatively labeled "release 3.5" to be distributed as a free
product enhancement for customers under maintenance
· Scheduled for Summer 2000
· Defining features
· Introspection (reflection) - the ability for an object to describe
itself at runtime
· Improved integration with applications developed using
Forté-for-Java Community Edition(tm) (formerly NetBeans)
· Platform support improvements to track important operating system
and database vendor activity
· Target features
· Display system enhancements (e.g., Motif 2 support, line arrowheads,
window refresh control, editable outline fields)
· Dynamic library loading
· Improved CORBA/IIOP support
· Improved XML and XSLT class support
· JMQ support
End-Year Release
· Tentatively labeled "release 3.6" to be distributed as a free
product enhancement for customers under maintenance
· Scheduled for year end 2000
· Defining features
· Any Release 3.5 target features that were not included in 3.5
· Generation of EJB interfaces for R3 service objects
· Platform support improvements to track important operating system
and database vendor activity
· Target features
· COBOL record handling as part of the OS390 transaction adapter
· Improved runtime security
· Interface classes for access to Netscape Server 4.0 and possibly
other web servers
Longer Term Product Directions
1. TOOL code to Java code migration. Neither release 3.5 nor 3.6 will
contain an automated solution in this area. Technical differences between
TOOL and Java make a 100% automated conversion all but impossible. A
workable solution is likely to involve a combination of tools and services.
2. Common repository between the 4GL and Java products. The recently
devised Java Tools Strategy has necessitated a change in the technology base
for our Java products to make them compatible with both the iPlanet
Application Server and the Forté for Java Community Edition. This, in turn,
has complicated our original vision of a common repository to the point that
we will not embark on this project. Instead, we have elevated
interoperability a short-term priority. In addition, we plan to migrate the
Fusion process definition tools to Java, thereby enabling Fusion definitions
to be stored in a common repository with Java code and components.
3. Other long-term enhancements will be determined by additional
customer and market feedback. A major criterion for new functionality will
be enhancing the revenue generating ability of the product, thereby
fostering its long-term health in the marketplace.

described in this document are subject to change without notice. Sun

Re: Forte and OrbixWeb call-back
We have created a business process manager (BPM) layer between our client GUI
and business model objects that supports Java call-in/call-out. This enables
switching out the Forte windows with Java windows for a web solution with
minimal code re-write.
We were able to get most functionality to work as per our design, which
included registering a call back function from a Java GUI in the BPM, but had
to make some sacrifices due to a Forte bug, at least under 3.0.D. We turned
in case #38434, detailing errors when we tried to fire a callback method with
parameters, example below ("callback" was the Java object passed in.)
method TestIIOPBackend.FireCallback(input message: Framework.string)
begin
if callback != nil then
task.part.logmgr.putline('Firing callback');
//WORKS
callback.CallMe();
//ERROR!
callback.CallMeString(message);
else
task.part.logmgr.putline('Callback not set');
end if;
end method;
This may have been fixed in 3.0.F, we found a way to work around it in our
design and haven't investigated since.

1) Do you have experience with PowerBuilder and Forte' applications running at
the same time on the same (laptop) computer? Here I'm thinking
about any potential resource constraints? Memory Requirements? As log as you are using Win95 or NT you should not be concerned about WIN-resources. Memory depends more on what your 2 tier PB application requires than what your Forté would require.

Email: [email protected]Hi Kamran!
What happens is that when the focus is on outline fields, the enter key
fires a doubleclick event and ignores the default button. So you need to
capture the doubleclick event and do whatever you want your button to do.
Here's a quote from Forte support
"Unfortunately, this is a documentation issue. The IsDefaultButton only
works when focus is on a simple DataField, because in all of the complex
fields, including TextField, TextEditField, TreeView and ListView as well
as OutlineField, the Enter key has a separate and defined action. On
Tree/ListViews and OutlineFields that is DoubleClick.
You COULD catch the DoubleClick on the OutlineField and post a click event
on the default button, however I'd encourage caution with that, since this
could cause some unexpected behavior if someone were counting on the Enter
(or a mouse double-click) to behave in our standard way."

Using Crystal Reports 6.0 ActiveX control on Win 95 clients or Win 95
development machines I cannot insert the object into the ActiveX widget. In
distributed mode the Control cannot be 'Realized' and in development, the
Win 95 machine hangs up.
Complete description of problem or question:
We have been using the Crystal Reports version 6.0 ActiveX control on NT
4.0 machines for about 1 month with no problems.
When we made our latest distribution to our Win 95 client environment, the
window with the ActiveX control started
generating an error that the object could not be 'realized'. We then
proceeded to install Forte and Crystal on a Win 95
Development machine and found that we are not even able to insert the
control in the ActiveX widget. The Win 95 Development
machine hangs with no error message at all and you have to close down your
Forte session.
Any help would be appreciated.

Using Crystal Reports 6.0 ActiveX control on Win 95 clients or Win 95
development machines I cannot insert the object into the ActiveX
widget. In distributed mode the Control cannot be 'Realized' and in
development, the Win 95 machine hangs up.
Complete description of problem or question:
We have been using the Crystal Reports version 6.0 ActiveX control on
NT 4.0 machines for about 1 month with no problems.
When we made our latest distribution to our Win 95 client environment,
the window with the ActiveX control started generating an error that
the object could not be 'realized'. We then proceeded to install Forte
and Crystal on a Win 95 Development machine and found that we are not
even able to insert the control in the ActiveX widget. The Win 95
Development machine hangs with no error message at all and you have to
close down your Forte session.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul Nash

Hi,
I have encountered an issue when working with Forte and cvs. If a developer creates a new component, say a JFrame, and add some other components to it and there after check in the result in the cvs (.java, .form and .nbatrs), everything seems to work just fine. Then another developer check out the code and open it in Forte then Forte some times remove components from the file and tell the developer that the file has changed (via an *). (Where not using Fortes own cvs tools). It only happens with files that have an form file.
Beside this, the same issue randomly arise when editing files.
Would be glad if somebody could help me.
MatsI have noticed the same thing. In my case it's the JMenuBar on a JFrame that gets trashed. The menu is still there, all that changes is
(1) value="menuBar" changes to value="(No menu)" in the <SyntheticProperty name="menuBar" ...> entity in the .form file (menuBar is the name of the menu bar)
(2) the setJMenuBar(menuBar); statement in the .java file goes away
and
(3) the menu bar no longer appears in the form.
It seems to be pretty reproducible.
