[Forum FAQ]How to troubleshoot common issue when configuring user device affinity from usage data

Symptom:
Some clients might fail to automatically configure user device affinity from usage data if you have manually configured user device affinity before.
When you check the UserAffinity.log, you can find the similar error messages as below:
User 'XXXXX\XXXXX' has xxxxx usage minutes UserAffinity
Setting auto affinity for user 'XXXXX\XXXXX'. UserAffinity
Found same state message existing. (was sent before) Skip sending same state message for user 'XXXXX\XXXXX'.. UserAffinity
Figure 1. Error Message in UserAffinity.log
Cause:
As the log said, there is a user affinity state message existing in WMI which prevents client from sending new user affinity state message.
Resolution:
We can delete the user affinity state message in WMI to force the client to resend the user affinity state message.
We can follow the steps below:
  1. Run Windows Management Instrumentation Tester (“Wbemtest”).
  2. In Windows Management Instrumentation Tester dialog box, click “Connect”.(Figure 2)
Figure 2.
  3. Type “root\ccm\statemsg” under the Namespace table and then click “Connect”.(Figure 3)
Figure 3.
  4. Click “Enum Classes”. (Figure 4)
Figure 4.
  5. Choose “Recursive”
in Superclass Info dialog box.(Figure 5)
Figure 5.
  6. Double-click “CCM_StateMsg” in Query Result dialog box.(Figure 6)
Figure 6.
  7. Click “Instances”
in Object editor for CCM_StateMsg dialog box. (Figure 7)
Figure 7.
  8. Choose the messages that contain "domain/user_Auto" and click “Delete” in the Query Result dialog box.(Figure 8)
Figure 8.
After you delete user affinity state message in WMI, the user affinity state message for the user will be resent. After a period time, we can check the UserAffinity.log to
see if the user affinity state message has been successfully sent. The related information would be similar as below:
Successfully sent user affinity state message for user 'xxxxx\xxxxx'.
Successfully created pending user affinity for user 'xxxxx\xxxxx' into WMI.

I'm not sure whether this is the appropriate place to add this but - a (possible) cause that I have seen which is not mentioned above is a request for an AAAA record (IPv6 address)
being responded to with an A record (IPv4 address).
DNS debug logging (Windows 2008 R2 SP1) captured requests to
192.225.156.200 and the corresponding responses. In each case the response was followed in the debug log by the event “The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name
in a packet from 192.225.156.200. The packet will be rejected. The event data contains the DNS packet.”
The domain name in the response was the same as that in the query, and looks OK.
The logged query shows an AAAA record (IPv6 address) request and the logged response returned an A record (IPv4 address).
http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc4074.txt “Common
Misbehavior Against DNS Queries for IPv6 Addresses” says, under “Expected Behavior”:
Suppose that an authoritative server has an A RR but has no AAAA RR
for a host name.  Then, the server should return a response to a
query for an AAAA RR of the name with the response code (RCODE) being
0 (indicating no error) and with an empty answer section (see
Sections 4.3.2 and 6.2.4 of [1]).  Such a response indicates that
there is at least one RR of a different type than AAAA for the
queried name, and the stub resolver can then look for A RRs.

  • [Forum FAQ] How do I send an email to users when the data in the report have been changed in Reporting Services?

    Introduction
There is a scenario that the data in the report changes infrequently, so the users want to be informed and get the most updated data once the data changes. By default, report server always run the report with the most recent data. Is there a way that we
can subscribe the report, so that we can send an email to users when the data in the report has been changed?
    Solution
To achieve this requirement, we can create a subscription for the report, then create a trigger in the table which including the report data. When this table has data insert, update or delete, it will be triggered and execute the subscription to send email
    to users.
In the Report Manager, create a subscription for the report and make it only execute one time.
When we create a subscription, a corresponding SQL Agent job will be created. Then we can use the query below to find out the job based on ScheduleId:
    -- List all SSRS subscriptions
USE [ReportServer];  -- You may change the database name.
    GO
    SELECT USR.UserName AS SubscriptionOwner
          ,SUB.ModifiedDate
          ,SUB.[Description]
          ,SUB.EventType
          ,SUB.DeliveryExtension
          ,SUB.LastStatus
          ,SUB.LastRunTime
          ,SCH.NextRunTime
          ,SCH.Name AS ScheduleName
              ,RS.ScheduleId
          ,CAT.[Path] AS ReportPath
          ,CAT.[Description] AS ReportDescription
    FROM dbo.Subscriptions AS SUB
         INNER JOIN dbo.Users AS USR
             ON SUB.OwnerID = USR.UserID
         INNER JOIN dbo.[Catalog] AS CAT
             ON SUB.Report_OID = CAT.ItemID
         INNER JOIN dbo.ReportSchedule AS RS
             ON SUB.Report_OID = RS.ReportID
                AND SUB.SubscriptionID = RS.SubscriptionID
         INNER JOIN dbo.Schedule AS SCH
             ON RS.ScheduleID = SCH.ScheduleID
    ORDER BY USR.UserName
             ,SUB.ModifiedDate ;
Create a trigger in the table which including the report data.
    CREATE TRIGGER reminder
    ON test.dbo.users
    AFTER INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE
    AS
    exec [ReportServer].dbo.AddEvent @EventType='TimedSubscription', @EventData='b64ce7ec-d598-45cd-bbc2-ea202e0c129d'
Please note that the command ‘exec [ReportServer].dbo.AddEvent @EventType='TimedSubscription', @EventData='b64ce7ec-d598-45cd-bbc2-ea202e0c129d'’ is coming from the job properties. We can go to SQL Server Agent Jobs, right-click the corresponding job to open
the Steps, copy the step command, and then paste it to the query.
Then when the user table has data insert, update or delete, the trigger will be triggered and execute the subscription to send email to users.

    Thanks,
Is this a supported scenario, or does it use unsupported features?
For example, can we call exec [ReportServer].dbo.AddEvent @EventType='TimedSubscription', @EventData='b64ce7ec-d598-45cd-bbc2-ea202e0c129d'
    in a supported way?

  • Forum FAQ: How to troubleshoot DNS Event 5504 error

    Symptom
A DNS server may frequently record the Event ID 5504 error in the event log:
    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: DNS
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 5504
    User: N/A
    Computer: Computer_name
Description: The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a packet from IP_Address .
    The packet is rejected.
    Cause
Event ID 5504 is logged when a DNS Server receives a packet containing an invalid domain name. There are many possible causes.
    1.      The DNS cache becomes corrupt with invalid domain names.
    2.      The DNS Server receives a spoofed response.
    3.      The DNS response contains domain names with characters other than 0-9, a-z, A-Z, . (Period), and - (Hyphen).
    4.      The DNS Server has been configured with invalid forwarders
    5.      The network the DNS server resides on is busy or not working properly.
    Resolution
The following are general troubleshooting steps for this issue:
    1. Secure the DNS cache against pollution.
    a)     Open DNS Management snap-in and then open the Properties dialog for the DNS server.
    b)     Click the Advanced tab, check the Secure Cache against Pollution option, and then click OK.
    c)      After enabling this setting, right-click the applicable DNS server and select Clear Cache, then restart the DNS Server service.
    2. Verify that the forwarder list on the DNS server is pointing to recursive DNS servers.  To view the forwarders, please perform the following steps:
    a)     Open DNS Management snap-in and then open the Properties dialog for the DNS server.
    b)     Click the Forwarders tab, you can view the existing forwarders.
    3. Some third party DNS servers may be using records of a type that aren’t supported by Windows DNS servers, such as the DNAME resource record.
920162     Event 5504 is logged when a Windows Server 2003-based DNS server receives a packet that contains a DNAME resource record
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;920162
    4. Another example where DNS will produce the Event ID 5504 error is when Extended DNS (EDNS) packets are received but the server that is attempting to resolve the EDNS traffic doesn’t support EDNS or have it enabled. An easy workaround is to disable EDNS.
    dnscmd /Config /EnableEDnsProbes 0

  • How to determine best User Device Affinity Settings

We've configured User Device Affinity for our site based on the canned defaults. Initially we started with 14 days and 1440 minutes. But after a recent deployment, we discovered that our Antivirus service account is registering as a "Primary User"
on all of our machines which has triggered a very bad situation.
My question is how do you determine these settings? My first try was to find a report that showed how many minutes each user was registering in the given period so that I could adjust it accordingly. I assume that my regular users are using the computers
a lot more than my service account but I have no way of verifying this.
I've tried combing through the security logs, but I'm not sure what SCCM is picking up on to determine the time period.
To me, it seems that 24 hours is a really low threshold and that I could bump that up to 120 hours over 14 days pretty easily without issue. My concern is that there is a reason that they are setting it so low to begin with that I'm missing. Even then, I'm
just randomly trying things hoping to get it right as I don't have the proper information to make the right decisions.
    Any ideas? Feedback?

Yeah, I saw those logs but it still seems mysterious to me. I'm not sure where it's getting it's info. I assume it's the security log for each machine but I have nothing to confirm that. It's odd because our service account for our antivirus solution isn't
actually logging onto the machines so I'm not sure how it decides that this user is a primary user.
Ultimately, we worked around the problem by switching antivirus solutions but that won't be an option next time.
My guess is that we could have fixed our problem by adjusting our security logging settings in windows. But it wasn't something I wanted to do without direct confirmation with how this all works.
Thank you for your help on this though.

  • FAQ: How do I troubleshoot audio issues when importing .MTS files?

Hello.   The link FAQ: How do I troubleshoot audio issues when importing .MTS files?
does not work, and i need the answer please. My imported MTS clips are not playing back audio because it seems that no audio imported with the video.   Thanks, Don.

    Hi there
Audio plays when the object with the audio assigned appears. This is why you hear it when the Button appears.
Try assigning the audio instead to the object that appears when you click the button. Perhaps the caption.

  • How to solve the issue "CUV check user equivalence failed" ?

    Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 VMs (rac1 and rac2) whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6 in VMPlayer according to the website http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html
In order to install Grid Infrastructure, we need to run Cluster Utility Verification (CUV) at first by running the cammand below:
    [ora11g@rac1 grid]$ ./runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n rac1,rac2 -verbose
    Its output:
Performing pre-checks for cluster services setup
Check: User equivalence for user “ora11g”
    Node Comment
    rac1 failed
    rac2 failed
Result: PRVF-4007 : User equivalence check failed for user “ora11g”
    ERROR:
User equivalence unavailable on all the specified nodes
    Verification cannot proceed
Pre-check for cluster services setup was unsuccessful on all the nodes.
As you see above, check user equivalence failed. I have run the 4 commands to fix this error as below:
    [ora11g@rac1 /]$ ssh-keygen
    Its output:
    Generating public/private rsa key pair.
Enter file in which to save the key (/home/grid/.ssh/id_rsa):
Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase):
    Enter same passphrase again:
Your identification has been saved in /home/grid/.ssh/id_rsa.
Your public key has been saved in /home/grid/.ssh/id_rsa.pub.

    [ora11g@rac1 .ssh]$ cat *pub >>authorized_keys
    [ora11g@rac1 .ssh]$ ssh rac1
    Its output:

Warning: Permanently added ‘rac1′ (RSA) to the list of known hosts.
    Write failed: Broken pipe.
    [ora11g@rac1 .ssh]$ ssh rac1-priv
    Its output:
The authenticity of host ‘rac1-priv (192.168.137.35)’ can’t be established.
    RSA key fingerprint is 9d:ae:51:7c:72:81:07:37:31:92:f1:c8:90:bc:52:55.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes
Warning: Permanently added ‘rac1-priv,192.168.137.35′ (RSA) to the list of known hosts.
    Write failed: Broken pipe.
After run the 4 commands above, I run the command below again:
    [ora11g@rac1 grid]$ ./runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n rac1,rac2 -verbose
    Its output is the same:
PRVF-4007 : User equivalence check failed for user “ora11g”
    ERROR:
User equivalence unavailable on all the specified nodes
    Verification cannot proceed
I think the problem is "Broken pipe" and ssh cannot write authorized_keys to the machines.
    My question is:
Do any folk understand how to solve the issue CUV "check user equivalence failed" for 2 VMs ?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying.
I have installed Grid Infrastructure a few times. Each time, on step 7 of 9, the installer fixes and checks 2 machines correctly. The entire installation has 3 parts as below:
    1) Install Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster
    2) Execute Root Scripts for Install Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster (script is root.sh)
    3) Configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster that includes NCA, ASMCA, PICA and CVU.
Each time, on step 8 of 9, the Installer installs Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster successfully that includes "Prepare, Copy files, Link binaries, Setup files and Perform remote operations".
But when the Installer get to part 3 CVU, it fails and then the Database cannot be installed.
Deinstall Grid is a very complicated process to do. Because of this reason, we need to run CVU at first to make sure everything is correct for 2 machines before install Grid.
Even we ignore "user equivalence (ssh)", we don't know whether other items can be passed or not because CVU cannot proceed to check the machines.
    My question is:
How to have the script "runcluvfy.sh" continue to check the machines while confronting "user equivalence failed" ?

  • How / When Does a Device Jump from the 2.4 GHz Network to the 5.0 GHz Network

I understand -- through another thread that I started -- that the Guest Network will be both 2.4 GHz as well as 5.0 GHz....I would like to understand how / when does a device jump from the 2.4 GHz network to the 5.0 GHz network as I understand that: the 2.4 GHz network is slower but has greater range relative to the 5.0 GHz network.
    Thx...

    Bob Timmons wrote:
A device will connect to either the 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz band based on its own capabilities and distance in relation to the router.
So, if you have a 5 GHz capable device that is in close proximity to the router, it will connect at 5 GHz.  If that device moves a few rooms away from the router, it will switch over to the 2.4 GHz band since that signal will be stronger....and likely faster at that location.
Think of 5 GHz as a "same room" connection or "line-of-sight" deal. It might be OK through one wall....if it is thin.
You do have an option to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz band in AirPort Utility. Once you have done that, simply "point" the device at the network with the 5 GHz name. Some users swear by this and some swear at this.
The downside to doing this......the device will likely try to hang on to the 5 GHz connection if it moves a few rooms away from the router.....at a location where the 2.4 GHz signal is stronger and likely faster.
Again, thanks for the very helpful response.
It occurs to me from reading the above that it makes sense to let the device (using your words) connect to either the 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz band based on its capabilities and distance in relation to the router as I can see / understand the downside and issue of manually pointing to or selecting  a specific network.
The reason that I purchased an Apple router is the hope that it will work better than some of the other routers I have tried as far as the 5 GHz / 2.4 GHz dual banding is concerned because in most of these cases I have had to disable the 5 GHz band to maintain a reliable internet connection...hopefully the Aiport Extreme will not require me to do so [i.e. it will work]!
With respect to *BOTH* the Primary Network and the Guest Network being dual band I can only conclude that this work because there are essentially two separates networks [i.e. 10.o.x.x and 172.16.x.x] that are using the send / receive configuration capabilities.
    Thx...

  • [Forum FAQ] How to use parameter to control the Expand/Collapse drill-down options in SSRS report?

In SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), drill-down is an action we can apply to any report item to hide and show other report items. They all are ways that we can organize and display data to help our users understand our report better. In this article,
we are talking about how to use parameter to control the Expand/Collapse drill-down options in SSRS report.
Consider that the report has a dataset (dsSales) with following fields: SalesTerritoryGroup, SalesTerritoryCountry, CalendarYear, SalesAmount.
    1. The report has the following group settings:
    Parent Group: SalesTerritoryGroup
     Child Group: SalesTerritoryCountry
      Child Group: CalendarYear
       Details: SalesAmount
    2. Add three parameters in the report:
    GroupExpand:
    Available Values: “Specify values”
    Label: Yes           Value: Yes
    Label: No            Value: No
    Default Values: “Specify values”
    Value: Yes
    CountryExpand:
    Available Values: “Specify values”
    Label: Yes           Value: =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="No",Nothing,"Yes")
    Label: No            Value: No
    Default Values: “Specify values”
    Value: =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="No","No","Yes")
    YearExpand:
    Available Values: “Specify values”
    Label: Yes
    Value: =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="No" or Parameters!CountryExpand.Value="No",Nothing,"Yes")
    Label: No            Value: No
    Default Values: “Specify values”
    Value: =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="No" or Parameters!CountryExpand.Value="No","No","Yes")
    3. Right click SalesTerritoryCountry icon in the Row Groups dialog box, select Group Properties.
    4. Click Visibility in the left pane. Select “Show or hide based on an expression” and type with following expression:
    =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="Yes", False, True)
Select “Display can be toggled by this report item” option, and select “SalesTerritoryGroup” in the drop down list.
    5. Use the same method setting CalendarYear, (Details) drill-down with following expression:
    =IIF(Parameters!CountryExpand.Value="Yes", False, True)
    =IIF(Parameters!YearExpand.Value="Yes", False, True)
    6. Click SalesTerritoryGroup text box in the tablix. Select InitialToggleState property in the Properties dialog box, and type following expression:
    =IIF(Parameters!GroupExpand.Value="Yes", True, False)
    7. Use the same method setting SalesTerritoryCountry, CalendarYear text box with following expression:
    =IIF(Parameters!CountryExpand.Value="Yes", True, False)
    =IIF(Parameters!YearExpand.Value="Yes", True, False)
After that, when we preview the report, we can use these three parameters to expand/collapse drill-down.
    Note:
In our test, we may meet following issue. We can check the expression of InitialToggleState property to troubleshooting the issue.

Part 2: Install and configure Windows Server Essentials Experience role remotely
    In an existing domain environment
In an existing domain environment, please use following command to provide credential and then add Server Essentials Role: (Figure 13)
    Add-WindowsFeature -Name ServerEssentialsRole
    -ComputerName xxx -Credential DomainName\DomainAccount
    Figure 13.
After you enter the credential, it will start install Windows Server Essentials role on your computer. (Figure 14)
    Figure 14.
After the installation completes, it will return the result as below:
    Figure 15.
    Next, please use the
    Enter-PSSession
cmdlet and provide the correct credential to start an interactive session with a remote computer. You can use the commands below:
    Enter-PSSession –ComputerName
    xxx –Credential DomainName\DomainAccount (Figure 16)
    Figure 16.
Then, please configure Server Essentials Role via
Add-WssConfigurationService cmdlet and it also needs to provide correct credential. (Figure 17)
    Figure 17.
After your credential is accepted, it will update and prepare your server. (Figure 18)
    Figure 18.
After that, please type “Y” to continue to configure Windows Server Essentials. (Figure 19)
    Figure 19.
    2. In a non-domain environment
In my test environment, I set up two computers running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and use Server1 as a target computer. The IP addresses for the two computers are as
    below:
    Sevrer1: 192.168.1.54
    Server2: 192.168.1.53
    Run
    Enable-PSRemoting –Force on Server1. (Figure 20)
    Figure 20.
Since there is no existing domain, it is necessary to add the target computer (Server1) to a TrustedHosts list (maintained by WinRM) on Server 2. We can use following command
    to
    add the TrustedHosts entry:
    Set-Item WSMan:\localhost\Client\TrustedHosts IP-Address
    (Figure 21)
    Figure 21.
    Next, we can use
    Enter-PSSession
cmdlet and provide the correct credential to start an interactive session with the remote computer. (Figure 22)
    Figure 22.
After that, you can install Windows Server Essentials Experience Role remotely via Add-WindowsFeature ServerEssentialsRole cmdlet. (Figure 23)
    Figure 23.
From figure 24, we can see that the installation is completed.
    Figure 24.
    Then you can use
Start-WssConfigurationService cmdlet to configure Essentials Role and follow the steps in the first part (configure Windows Server Essentials Experience in a non-domain environment) as the steps would be the same.
The figure below shows the status of Windows Server Essentials.
    Figure
    25.
Finally, we have successfully configured Windows Server Essentials on Server1. (Figure 26)
    Figure 26.

  • When spanning new tabs (firefox) my users are asked to re-authenticate with pages already signed into. Can you tell me how to fix this issue for firefox users?

With some research I found regedit setting called “TabProcGrowth” that allows tabs to span without re-authenticating with certain browsers. Can you tell me how to fix this issue for my Mozilla Firefox users? Our current version of Mozilla Firefox is: 24.5.0 (x86 en-US). This was first noticed with a product called Confluence that we use in our Tech Support area. Users are having to reenter their password every time they click on a new link in confluence. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Hi Bernie:
As long as you are accessing your internal server on http:// or https:// then I would expect the normal rules to apply. To see whether some external requests are being blocked, you might try using Firefox's Web Console, Network tab.
You can open the console in the lower part of a tab using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+k
    * "3-bar" menu button > Developer > Web Console
    * (menu bar) Tools menu > Web Developer > Web Console
Click "Network" on the top bar of the Web Console.
Then use the address bar or a bookmark to launch Confluence in the same tab. Each request made by Firefox should be displayed along with the result. You can click a row for more details.
When I look up "TabProcGrowth" it seems related to the Protected Mode feature of IE8 and newer, which is not (yet) applicable to Firefox. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/askie/archive/2009/03/09/opening-a-new-tab-may-launch-a-new-process-with-internet-explorer-8-0.aspx
However, if Confluence is heavily reliant on plugins such as Flash or Java, that could be a factor because plugins are run out-of-process in Firefox. In that case I suggest checking with Confluence for suggestions.
