Free RAM - a dif in iBook performance between 25M and 1G?

Hi...I keep several programs running on my iBook 1.33 with 768 onboard. Activity Monitor shows that at its lowest, my free RAM dips to around 25 or so megs when I'm streaming video from a news site.
My question is whether or not there is a difference in the Book's performance when I have 25 megs of free RAM....or 500 megs? Or being "in the green" means that there is simply enough...being "greener" won't make a difference...
I know that more is always better, but I'd like to know if more is necessary.
The answer will determine whether or not I switch out the 512 for a 1G.
I'd appreciate any feedback...Thanx!

In those instances where chip RAM is needed (and not in a video-intensive
situation where you can't upgrade VRAM, and regular RAM is not shared)
the chip RAM is faster and more readily is available to priority applications
and the OS X system itself. And Virtual Memory (VM) is slower, due to
the fact that is derived by the computer having to read-write to/from the
internal hard disk drive, and that is a slower and less-direct process.
Another way to speed up a limited upgrade option computer would be to
pay to have (or be brave and suffer any consequences, and DIY) the
internal hard disk drive replaced with a faster spin-rate new drive which
also has a larger buffer - and - more free space. This and the chip RAM
could make the computer act more like a faster model computer. At
least until the hard disk drive gets fragmented and or more than 3/4 full.
There are more than a few things one can do to enhance the performance
of the hard to upgrade iBook G4 (or iMac G4) since you can't change the
CPU or make the system bus work any faster. Bottlenecks aside, a few
items that can be upgraded, along with a regimen of routine maintenance
can help almost any computer not pushed beyond its limits, to work better.
Even with a hard disk drive only 75% full, it can be more sluggish and
waste processing and swap-file cycles (moving data bits as VM to/from
the hard disk drive when taxing the limited resources of the computer)
if the hard disk drive has never seen much maintenance. If you use an
external FireWire enclosed hard disk drive, and learn how to clone the
whole iBook's drive contents over, then be sure the clone-copy can boot
the computer, before proceeding; you could use the disk utility to wipe
the drive and use the zero-overwrite option, totally erasing and then to
reformat the drive again, to clear any low-level issues and defragment
the drive, (plus pull any seldom used saved items off the computer,
to free-up hard disk drive space, for the system to use as swap & VM)
you could also reclaim some of the original illusions of speed now lost.
{As the computer's OS gets more and more parts, updates and also
any application and associated files to sort through, it will run slower;
VM also this adds into the mix, with a fuller and older hard disk drive.}

Minor to major background maintenance, preventative, can be helped
through the use of this utility interface tool; it can help the OS X and
your computer generally run a bit better. I use OnyX's 'automation'
selection and also have this utility's preferences set for it to restart
by itself after it runs all of the checkboxed items in this set. For this,

Sometimes, even just repairing those disk permissions can help; and
the OnyX tool can run that, as part of the Automation sequence; but
it should be run more often from D.U. than you'd need to use OnyX.

  • What is the diff in term of fastness and performance between retina and last mbp version in percentage ?

What is the diff in term of fastness and performance between retina and last mbp version in PERCENTAGE ?
Ty to not give links i want an answer here and now by someone who knows what hes talking about.

But old mbp is not available with ssd you have to buy the option right ?
Anyway, outside reboot speed is there a speed difference between retina and old version in term of general processing  ?
I have a 2009 MBP that originally came with a SATA drive. Recently, I swapped drives; now, it has 512GB SSD. In other words, you can easily increase the speed of a standard MBP. There is going to be an increase in general processing with the Retina MBPs, but the significance depends on the application. For example, booting Photoshop used to take just over 30 seconds with a SATA drive; with an SSD, it's just under 10 seconds. But controlling for the SATA vs SSD, the differences are smaller and incremental.
Ok you speak about a diff with the retina in term of better graphics when zooming but will this advantage be relevant also on my external  giant monitors ?
I can't answer that, so I'll leave that to someone with more expertise in this area.

  • Performance between MQ and MQ JMS

Hi! I now MqSeries is not the subject of this newsgroup, but, as soon as,
I'm using Weblogic to access MQ JMS queue, I'd like to now the opinion of
other people about performance in the following environment.
Our test program runs MQ Series 5.2 and BEA Weblogic 6.1sp2 on Solaris 2.8
over a E3500(4 cpus@400MHz, 3Gbytes of core memory). The application uses
    the JMS API.
    Tests showed that:
1.it takes about 150msec for a single thread to read a message from a MQ
Series queue in transactional context (using XA interface)
2.when using 5 threads to read the same queue, each thread takes about
400msec to read a message instead of keeping about the same 150msec
    3.for a non-transactional read, a single thread is capable of reading a
message in about 50msec and the 5 thread version, in 70msec (still not
scalling up but not as bad as the transactional version).
Monitoring MQ using strmqtrc (MQ trace) at API level, we could see that
between xa_start and MQGET call it took about 300msec (using the 5 thread
    version), apparently doing nothing.
CPU and I/O seems not to be a problem, at least as far as we could monitor.
Please see attached logs. The first log is the MQ trace file. The other one
is the app log which shows, for each thread, the time difference between one
message and the previous one to the same thread.
    For instance
    0milli (Thread-0)->Starting transaction <-before begin
    transaction
    1milli (Thread-0)->Waiting for message <-after begin tran,
    before read queue
    553milli (Thread-0)->Got incoming msg <-after read
    1milli (Thread-0)->Transaction committing <-before commit
    transaction
    10milli (Thread-0)->Message processing completed. <-after commit
Are these figures the expected values for this hardware/software

Make sure you are using the lwp thread library on Solaris 8 (put
/usr/lib/lwp FIRST in LD_LIBRARY_PATH - something like that).
I didn't look too closely at your complete post.

  • Difference in WS performance between Search and Retrieve operations?

    All,
We are currently working on a new repository and planning to use MDM webservices on top of that repository for searching and retrieving the data.
Now I'm curious about the difference in performance between the Search and the Retrieve operations and also within the Retrieve operation, between the different identification methods (internal ID, auto ID, remote key, unique field and display field).
Because in the webservices guide is stated that the identification methods are listed in order of best performance, but what are these performance differences between these methods (e.g. a retrieve on internal ID is x times faster than a retrieve on remote key which on his turn is x times faster than a retrieve on display fields which on his turn is x times faster than a search operation on same display field).
Of course the performance depends on lot of other things as well, but I just want to get a feeling on the performance related to eachother (keeping all other variables that can influence the performance the same!)!
I hope that any of you has experiences with all possibilities and can share performance measurements between the different operations related to eachother.  Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Marcel Herber

    Hi,
Did you implment Webservices in your site.
We are also having a similar scenarion where we have to serach a Records in MDM from SAP PI based on the certain criteria. I am concerned about the SAP MDM performance , since we are having heavy amount data being loaded every 30 minutes.
Please let me know the performace aspects of using Webservices.

  • IBook Shipping between Christmas and New Years?

Anyone from Apple know whether books are being processed and shipped between Christmas and New Years?
I am wondering if anyone has an accurate answer as to why shipping time takes longer then normal if an iBook order was put in on December 23rd (3:00am Pacific).  I made the order exspecting the shipment to arrive by atleast the 30th with express shipping.  If i had ordered on December 22nd, the site said it would arrive by December 29th, and assumed that if ordered a day later it would arrive a day later.  The message I received when purchased said it would only be delivered Jan 4-6 which is much more than anticipated.  Of course it's the holidays, but this doesn't make sense to me even with omiting the 26th as a holiday.  That, and it is the end of the holidays so I would think most books have already been made and shipped?  I am leaving overseas on the 31st and wanted to have these books to give to relatives!   I ordered them and am just hoping they come in on time.
Anyone from Apple know whether books are being processed and shipped between Christmas and New Years?
By the way, since the 23rd, it said the books were Preparing for Shippment.
    Thanks!

  • Performance between CLOB and VARCHAR2

I would like to know if there is any really performance issues between CLOB and VARCHAR2 data types?
In particular, why would it not be better to declare all large text items as CLOB rather than VARCHAR2(4000) in a table? For example, if I am going to store about a page of text, in a table, why not standardize of CLOB? Only use VARCHAR2 for small text items.

I doubt that there would be much, if any, performance difference between a CLOB and a VARCHAR2. By default, Oracle will store CLOBS directly in the table if they are less than about 4000 bytes, so the effect would be the same as a VARCHAR2(4000).
The advantage of VARCHAR2(4000) over a CLOB is that you document and enforce the maximum size of the field. If you know that no test item will exceed 4000 bytes, then I would store it as a VARCHAR2, because if they can store more, someone will.
A possible disadvantage of using CLOBS instead of VARCHAR2(4000) is that when you declare a column as a CLOB, Oracle creates the two lob segments whether or not they are needed to actually store data. So, depending on how many VARCHAR2(4000) columns you change to CLOBS without needing to store more than 4000 bytes, you can potentially waste a significant amount of space.
    SQL> CREATE TABLE t_clob (id NUMBER, descr CLOB);
    Table created.

  • Will iBooks sync between iPhone and iPad with non-iCloud Apple ID?

I have two Apple IDs. One is an email address that I've used for all my iTunes purchases. The other is a .Mac account that I've had for I think ten years. The .Mac account has, of course, been converted to an iCloud account. I got an iPad recently and have bought some books from the iBooks store using my non-iCloud Apple ID. I have books on both my iPad and iPhone and have Sync Bookmarks and Sync Collections enabled on both devices. Both devices are connected to my iCloud account. But the two devices don't sync. Is this because my purchases were made with my non-iCloud account? Is there any way to get them to sync?

I don't think you are missing anything...
On the iOS devices tap Settings > iCloud. Switch Photo Stream off then back on then reset the devices.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
See if your photos sync now between the PC, iPad, and iPhone.

  • SQL query performance between TOAD and APEX

    Hi Guys,
I would like to know if there is any performance difference between a simple query run in TOAD and APEX(classic report).
The reason being, I have a query based on a single table(conataining 15000 rows) which takes almost 30seconds in APEX whereas it takes just 2-3 seconds in TOAD.
    Thanks,
    Raj.

    Varad,
    Thanks for your suggestion.
I tried changing the pagination but not much it helped.
Basically I have 5 reports on the same page.
When the user first navigates to this page then Report-1 is generated first with data as links to other reports.
So I guess when I click on any of the column links on the Report-1 then the page is refreshed and this time its taking total time for Report-1 and Report-2.
Is there a possibility that we can circumvent the execution of the first query or cache the results of report-1 so that when the page is refreshed it displays the data from the cache for Report-1 and executes the query for Report-2 ?

  • Ibooks syncing between iphone and ipad

Is there a way to keep both my iPhone and iPad books in sync between my iPhone and iPad?  Just like Amazon Kindle that you can read on one device and continue where you left off on another device.  Your placeholders and bookmards are constantly in sync.  I'd like to be able to do that without have to connect to my MacBook.  I thought this should be possible now with iCloud.

My new iPad mini had the iBooks, Sync Bookmarks and Sync Collections turned on by default. But my iPhone 4s did not. Snyc didn't work after I turned them on for the iPhone. But after a shutdown and restart of the phone, it worked. I also "stopped" the iBooks app on the iPad. When I relaunced iBooks on the iPhone, it asked me if I wanted to Sync with iCloud--I said Yes.
Now bookmarks show up on the iPad (I had created the bookmarks on the iPhone).

  • Not all ibooks syncing between ipad and iphone

I am trying to sync about 1500 ibooks from my ipad mini to my iphone 6 but it will only sync about 1400. I transferred all purchases from my mini to itunes and then synced my iphone but certain ibooks will appear then disappear or will only open to a blank white screen then disappear. Not sure what happen or how to fix this. All started happening after ios8.

On your phone go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contact section).  If you have this setting, make be sure you have selected iCloud as your default account and not something else like On My iPhone, Google, Yahoo, an Exchange account, etc.  If iCloud is not selected, make this change then add a new test contact and see if it appears in your contacts on icloud.com and your other devices now.
If you don't have the Default Account setting, or if it is set to iCloud but new contacts added to your phone still aren't appearing on icloud.com, add any missing contacts from your phone to your contacts on icloud.com.  Once the contacts on icloud.com are up to date, go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts off, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (they will still be in iCloud), then after a few seconds turn Calendars back on.  Then add a new test contact on your phone and see if it appears on your calendar on icloud.com and your other devices now.

What kind of Mac do you have and how much RAM does it have? If you don't have at least 1 GB you may have a problem.
I have today deleted loads of photos and music and videos.
That would be items on your hard drive. Your hard drive is not RAM. You can tell how much RAM you have by going to 'About this Mac' under the Apple menu. The line mentioning 'Memory' tells you how much RAM you have.

  • Spinning beachballs, slow machines, and vanishing free RAM

I have a tale to tell and a question at the end.
I have an iBook G4, running OS10.3.9. I have been using it without major problems for over a year. I have over 9 G of free disk space.
About a month ago, with no apparent cause, I became afflicted with the spinning beach ball of death. This would happen usually after I had been using the machine for a few hours and had three or four major applications running: iTunes, Word, Entourage, and Safari, say. The machine would become unresponsive. The beach ball would appear for virtually every mouse click. At its worst, it could take three minutes or more for the machine to respond to a command. Once in this state, even quitting applications did not significantly increase speed. Usually a restart did, but not always.
The affliction was unpredictable. I could go several days without a problem, and then, bingo, I’m in the molasses again.
What did I do? I updated my anti-virus software and gave a scan — no problems found. I checked for updates for my various applications and for the operating system. Suspecting Entourage, which has been prone to slowness, I rebuilt its database. I think I rebuilt my desktop, too. I ran Disk Utility and fixed permissions — no improvement. I ran Tech Tool — no problems found. I ran MacJanitor — no improvement. I ran Activity Monitor to see if the CPU was tied up. No, it wasn’t. Was the RAM overloaded? I only had 256 M, and it was basically fully allocated most of the time. I had significant numbers of page-outs. The green wedge of free RAM on the Activity Monitor pie chart was just a sliver.
So, I installed another 512 M of RAM. This seems to have helped. But to my surprise it hasn’t completely cured the problem.
I keep Activity Monitor running and set its icon in the dock to show RAM use. At the beginning of the day, maybe 70 percent of the RAM is green (free). After I start my usual round of applications, the green slice drops to say 40 percent.
Now here is the odd thing: the amount of green will shrink during the day. There seems to be a ratchet effect going on. When I start an application, the amount of free RAM shrinks. When I quit the application, some of the free RAM comes back, but not all of it. Also, the amount of free RAM may shrink even if I do nothing at all — if I just go for a break and come back to my machine a while later.
Right now, it is late in the day. I am back to a sliver of green on the RAM chart. I have tried restarting my computer. Instead of the 70 percent green wedge I expected, it came right back to a nearly fully allocated RAM. If I try to switch between apps or start a new app, or even copy something to the clipboard, I may get a beach ball for five to twenty seconds — or I may not. It's unpredictable.
Another odd thing: The amount of memory listed as in use by various processes in Activity Monitor does not add up to the amount of memory shown as in use on the pie chart. The sum of the memory listed in use is lower than the amount shown in use on the pie chart.
So what is going on? Is this just bad memory management by OSX? Has my machine’s RAM been taken over by aliens? Or is it something else? And is there a cure?
    Thanks for any help.
    - Ken
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

An update -- and hopefully a root cause and solution.
The maintenance task that seemed to free up the RAM was rebuilding the locate database, one of the weekly tasks that MacJanitor or OnyX will do on request. Why it worked, I don't know. It seemed to reduce the amount of assigned but inactive RAM.
It was only a temporary fix though. The amount of free RAM would begin to slowly drop after the task was done, and within a few hours it would be almost gone again.
Yesterday afternoon, the spinning beachball returned with a vengance. This time, however, it appeared while over half the RAM was free. Tasks shown in Activity Monitor, particularly window servers, began to hang.
I repaired permissions. No improvement. I ran Disk Utility from the start-up disk. It found problems on the hard drive that it could not repair. I ran Tech Tool from its CD. The hard drive failed Tech Tool's write and read buffer tests and had flaws in its directory. Tech Tool repaired the directory. I rebooted OS X, and the machine still had the slows. I backed up key data. I ran Tech Tool again from the CD. This time the disk passed the read and write buffer tests, but the directory was rotten again.
I repaired the directory and did an Archive and Install of the operating system. When the machine restarted, I ran Software Update. It downloaded 8 files. When it tried to then read them on the disk and install them, every one of them was corrupted.
Cut to punchline: I took the machine to an Apple Store today and they diagnosed a bad hard drive. I suspect that an infrequent intermittent disk error, worse in the afternoons when the machine was warm, was the source of the problems from the beginning. Yesterday, the disk failure became more frequent. By today, the disk was basically useless.
Thank you, Andrew at the Apple Genius Bar. Thank you, makers of external hard drives that make frequent back-ups easy. Back up your data, friends. Hard drives can fail.

  • MacBook Pro being really slow and vert little free RAM.

    Hi,
Just recently my MacBook Pro has been running really slowly when navigating between applications and tabs in safari. I checked to see how much RAM was free and it said only 30MB. I have no more apps open or things running than I normally do. This Mac is 6 months old but my old mac that was nearly 3 years old tended to run quicker, and as mentioned, I have no more apps running than I previously had. Maybe Word, Excel, iTunes and Safari. Can anyone help explain what might be making it slow and what might be hogging all the RAM?
    Thanks
    Matt

I ran the Etrereport and this is what i got back.

  • Is there a way to turn off using ram as intermediary when transfering files between 2 internal hdds? (write cache is off on all drives)

right forum?  first time here. none of the options seem perfect. so i guess this applies to 'setup.' i tried to describe what's happening verbosely from the start of a file transfer to completion of writing file to 2nd hard drive.
    win 7 64bit home - i2600k 3.4ghz - 8gb of ram - 2hdd 1 ssd
I have this problem when transferring files between 2 internal hard drives. one is unhealthy (slow write speeds but not looking for advice to replace it because it serves its unimportant purpose). so, the unhealthy drive drops into PIO mode - that's acceptable.
however, a little over 1gb of any file transfer is cached in RAM during the file transfer. after the file transfer window closes, indicating the transfer is "complete" (HA!), it still has 1gb to write from RAM which takes about 30minutes. This would
not be a problem if it did not also earmark an additional 5gb of ram (never in use), leaving 1gb or less 'free' for programs. this needlessly causes my pc to be sluggish - moreso than a typical file transfer file between 2 healthy drives. i have windows write
caching turned off on all drives. so this is a different setting i can't figure out nor find after 2 hours of google searches.
info from taskmanager and resource monitor.
idle estimates: total 8175, cached 532, available 7218, free 6771 and the graph in taskman shows about 1gb memory in use.
at the start of a file transfer:  8175,  2661,  6070,  4511free and ~2gb of ram used in graph. No problems, yet.
however, as the transfer goes on, the free ram value drops to less than 1gb (1gb normal +1gb temporary transfer cache +5gb of unused earmarked space = ~7gb),  cached value increases, but the amount of used ram remains relatively unchanged (2gb
during transfer and slowly drops to idle values as remaining bits are written to the 2nd hard drive).  the free value is even slower to return to idle norms after the transfer completes writing data to 2nd hard drive from RAM. so, it's earmarking an addition
5gb of ram that are completely unused during this process.  *****This is my problem*****
Is there any way to turn this function off or limit its maximum size. in addition to sluggishness, it poses risk to data integrity from system errors/power loss, and it's difficult to discern the actual time of transfer completion, which makes it difficult
to know when it's safe to shutdown my pc (any data left in ram is lost, and the file transfer is ruined - as of now i have to use resmon and look through what's writing to disk2 -> sometimes easy to forget about it when the transfer window closed 20-30minutes
ago and the file is still in the process of writing to the 2nd disk).
Any solution would be nice, and a little extra info like whether it can be applied to only 1 hard drive would be excellent.

    Thanks for the reply.
(Although i have an undergrad degeee in computers, it's been 15years and my vocab is terrible. so, i will try my best. keep an open mind. it's not my occupation, so i rarely have to communicate ideas regarding PCs)
It operates the same way regardless of the write-cache option being enabled. It's not using the 5gb for read/write buffer - it's merely bloating standby memory during the transfer process at a rate similar to the write speed of destination (for my situation).
at this point i don't expect a solution. i've tried to look through lists of known memory leaks but i dont have the vocabulary to be 100% certain this problem is not documented. as of now it can't affect many people - NAS's with low bandwidth networks, usb
attached storage etc. do bugs get forwarded from these forums? below i can outline the consistent and repeatable nature not only on my pc but on others' pcs as well (2012 forum post i found).
I've been testing and paying a little more attention and i can describe it better:
    Just the Facts
Resmon Memory Info: "In Use" stays consistent ~1gb (idle amount and roughly the same when nothing else is running during file transfer)
                                     "Modified" contains file transfer
data (meta data?) which remains consistent at little over 1gb (minor fluctuations due to working as a buffer). After the file transfer window closes "Modified" slowly diminishes as it finishes lazy writing (i believe that's the term). I forget idle
pc amount, but after transfer this is ony 58mb)
"Standby" as the transfer starts it immediately rises to ~2gb. I'm sure this initial jump is normal. However, it will bloat well over 5gb over time with a large enough transfer increasing at a consistent rate during the entire transfer
process. the crux of the matter.
"Free" will drop as far as 35-50megabytes over time.
as the transfer starts, the "Standby" increases by an immediate chunk then at a slow rate throughout entire transfer process(~1mb/s). once writing metadata to RAM no longer occurs, the "Modified" ram slowly (@500kb/s matching resmon disk
activity for that file write) diminishes as it finishes lazy writing, After file is 100% written to destination drive, "Standby" remains a bloated figure long after.
a 1.4gb transfer filled 3677MB of "Standby" by the time writing finished and modified ram cleared. after 20minutes, it's still bloated at 3696MB. after 30-40mins it's down to 2300mb - this is about what it jumps immediately to when transfer starts
    - it now remains at this level until i reboot.
I notice the "standby" is available to programs. but they do not operate well. e.g. a 480p trailer on IMDB.com will stop-and-go every 2-3seconds (stream buffers fine/fast) - this would be during the worst case scenario of 35-50mb "Free"
ram. my pc isn't and never was the latest and greatest, but choppy video never happens even with 1 or 2 resource hogs running (video processing/encoding, games, etc).
    Conjecture Below
i think it's a problem when one device is significantly slower at writing than the source device - this is the factor that i share with others having this problem. when data is written to modified ram then sent to destination, standby memory is expanded
until it completely or nearly fills all available RAM - If the transfer size is large enough relative to how slow the write speed of destination device is. otherwise it fills it up as much as the file size/write speed issue allows. the term "memory leak"
is used below but may not technically be one, but it's an apt description in layman's terms.
i saw a similar post in these forums (link at end). My problem is repeatable and consistent with others' reports. I wasn't sure if i should revive it with a reply. some of these online message boards (maybe not this one) are extremely picky
and sensitive, lol.the world will end if an old thread revives - even if for a good reason.
i can answer some of the ancillary issues. one person (Friday, September 21, 2012 8:33 PM) mentions not being able to shutdown, i asume he means stuck on the shutdown screen - this is because lazy writing has not completed - his nas write speed is significantly
slower than reading from source - the last bits of data left in ram still needs to be writen to the destination. shutdown will stall for as long as needed until the data finishes writing to destination to prevent data loss.
another person (Monday, September 24, 2012 6:31 PM) mentions the rate of the leak, but the rate is more likely a function of read speed from source relative to write speed of destination. which explains why my standby expands closer to a 1:1 ratio compared
to his 1:100 (he said 10mb per 1000mb)
we all have the same exact results/behaviour, but slightly different rates of bloating/leaking. as the file is written from from the ram to the destination, standby increases during this time - not a problem if read and write speeds are roughly equal (unless
your transfering a terabytes then i bet the problem could rear its head). when writing lags, it gives the opportunity for standby ram to bloat with no maximum except the amount of installed ram. slower the write speed, the worse the problem.
The reply on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 3:04 AM has before and after pictures of exactly what i described in
"Just the Facts". Specifically the resmon image showing the Memory Tab.
The kb2647452 hotfix seems to do some weird things relative to this problem. in the posts that mention they've applied it: after file completes it looks like the "standby" bloat is now "in use" bloat. as per info from Tuesday, October
09, 2012 10:36 PM - bobmtl in an earlier post applies the patch. compare images from earlier posts to his post on this date. seems like a worse problem. Also, his process list indicates it's very unlikely they add up to ~4gb as listed in the color coded bar.
wheres the extra gb's coming from? likely the same culprit of what filled up "standby" memory for me and others. it looks like this patch relative to this problem merely recategorizes the bloat - just changes the title it falls under.

  • How can I know the amount of free RAM when my VI is running?

I need to know the amount of free RAM when my VI is running.

If you are using Windows NT/2000/XP, monitoring free memory is very easy. Simply right click on the task bar and open the Task Manager. Click on the Performance tab, and you'll be able to monitor the physical memory total and available on your PC.
If you are using Windows 9X, you will have to add some optional resources. Open Control Panel, then select Add/Remove Programs. Click on the Windows Setup Tab, and select System Tools, then click the Details... button. Check the boxes to install System Monitor and System Resource Meter. Click OK, and you will be prompted for your Windows CD. Insert the CD and Windows will add the monitoring tools. You can then use them to watch your free resources.
