Freeing up space from root

currently im low in space in my root drive, but i have loads of space in /home and /home1.
if i edit the pacman.conf and make it so that
#RootDir     = /
#DBPath      = /var/lib/pacman/
#CacheDir    = /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
#LogFile     = /var/log/pacman.log
is changed from  to  this
RootDir     = /home1
#DBPath      = /var/lib/pacman/
#CacheDir    = /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
#LogFile     = /var/log/pacman.log
what else would i need to do to move the current libs in /var/lib and /var/cache to get them to my /home1 location.
thanks

yes i did the pacman -Scc
the
pacman -Qqtd
shows a few packages, maybe i can delete some of these, there is nothing big.

YES that is what i would like ideally.
i did read up on cd live boot with gparted, so might have to resort to that.
as you say it would mean resising the partition.
@Trilby
yes altera design suite is 6.5 G, not sure where all the files are installed
but if its / then i'm going to be short.

  • How to reassign disk space from root on OL 5

    Hi,
we have installed OL and accidentally i assigned total space to root directory, i want to re-create another mount point,is it possible..?
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
    901G 2.8G ; 852G 1% /

You will need to shrink your LVM root volume to be able to create an additional volume to be mounted separately. The process requires that you boot into rescue mode using a startup CD/DVD and drop into a shell without mounting the root partition.
    For instance:
    vgchange -a y
    lvscan
    fsck -f /dev/vg_vm025/lv_root
    resize2fs /dev/vg_vm025/lv_root 100G
    lvresize -L -100G /dev/vg_vm025/lv_root
    lvcreate -L 20G -n lv_home vg_vm025
You then have a new volume named "lv_home" that you can mount.
So yes, it is possible, but the process is rather complex. If you are not familiar with the concepts and administration of LVM I suggest to reinstall the system and customize the installation process. You can find info in the standard installation guide.

  • Freeing up space from phone

I want to free up space on my phone. Will the pictures on my icloud erase if I delete them from my phone?

They will if you delete them from your My Photo Stream Alburm.  They won't if you delete them from your camera roll.  The best thing to do with camera roll photos is to import them to your computer, then delete them from your phone (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083).

  • Freeing up space from FCP project

    Hi All.
I recently shot about 30+ hours of interviews in Europe, captured it all (about 450 gb), made a sequence of each interview, added a translation audio track and then made dupes with in/out points to use as clips. I've ended up with as many dupe sequences as I have "clips".
Now I want to free up space on the hard drive but when I trash the original clips I lose everything. Is there a way or have I painted myself into a box?
    Thanks, SHC

BE SURE YOU TEST the new copy before you delete the old one.

can i just throw away some of the middle folders in time machines backup folder to free up some space? Each of those folders says its holding multiple gigs of data, which they are obviously not.
Throwing one of them away won't incite time machine to discard the originals, will it?

That could result in a veritable disaster. You stand the chance of corrupting the entire TM database, rendering it useless. Never do anything directly in any of the TM folders or backups. Always use TM itself.
The proper way to remove TM backups is with TM.
Select an item and click the gear in the Finder. You have many choices including deleting all instances of a file or folder.
When TM determines that it needs more room, it properly deletes old files and folders, without any user intervention. It "knows" how to do this.
If you need more room on the HD for other purposes, I suggest using SuperDuper to clone your TM backup onto a larger drive.

  • Freeing HD space from iTunes without losing content during Sync with iPhone

    Hey, Y'all!
This is probably a common question — but I had some trouble finding a specific answer by a few attempts at searching. So please forgive any redundancy...
I desperately need to free HD capacity on my MacBook Pro, and parts of my iTunes Library would make good candidates. The entire home/Music folder is already backed-up to an ext. HD (more than 1x).
But I'd prefer to NOT lose whatever I delete from my MacBook Pro's HD when I sync with my iPhone 3Gs and my son's iPod Touch. Both devices have plenty of capacity for what they're holding currently.
How do I set up sync parameters to accomplish this using, e.g., the Music and Videos tabs in the iTunes interface with these devices? And when — do I alter these settings "before" doing the removals from my HD? The answers may be obvious, but unfortunately not to me.
Hope I've made sense in stating my questions. I'm using iTunes 8.2.1 (6) if that's a factor in this...
    Thanks for your help!

I finally found several errors that may all help you who may have the same problem. While each of these steps may or many not help you, here is what I did to achieve a resolution. I will provide the logic as much as I can.
    1. The problem is as above, unchange
Step 1: I made sure that my Mac (late 2008 unibody, running Mac OS X 10.8.2 with all recent updates) was infact working well. I verified and repaired permissions as well as verified and repaired my HD.
Step 2: I went through my iTunes app library and eliminated duplicates as well as apps that 'hung' (apps that would be updated but never leave the update screen- somehow these apps are duplicated- delete one of these to clean up your app update screen.
Step 3: Check for operating mode. You most likely need to run iTunes 11 on Mac OS X Mountain Lion (and possibly Lion) in 64 bit mode. Close iTunes and open your Applications folder. There select iTunes 11 and under the file menu- select Get info. See if your iTunes is running in 32 bit mode*. Uncheck this if 32 bit mode is selected. Close the window and restart Itunes. Try synching with your iPhone or Ipod (touch). This may work.
*Step 4: If you have 32 bit mode checked, think back to if you installed 3rd party plugins. I realized I have a legacy plugin for iToner that forced iTunes 11 to jump back from 32 bit and 64 bit modes. Check your iTunes plugins and either delete or backup/delete plugins.
After doing all this, my iTunes 11 and iPhone 5 started synching again.
I hope this helps. Whenever there are problems in upgrades, check 3rd party plugins! Check that folder to jog your memory!

  • I am having a challenge freeing up space

I am having a challenge freeing up space.  I have reviewed other discussions and while there are some similarities they do not seem to provide a solution to my issue.
My main User account (Macintosh > Users > Admin Profile) shows that it is taking up 201.22GB.  Under my user account is the following...
    Applications

For me it adds up to just a little over 122.85GB.  Where does the 201.22GB come from???  It appears that my iMac is showing 80GB of storage space being used that isn't.
When I open up the iMac HD it gives me
    Applications 16.74GB
    Developer 151KB
    Library 9.04GB
    System 4.99GB
Am I missing something?  How do I determine what is taking up so much space?
    Thank you for your help.

Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root.
First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • There is no more space for virtual disk ServerName_2.vmdk. You might be able to continue this session by freeing disk space on the relevant volume, and clicking Retry. Click Cancel to terminate this session.   Time: 30/05/2014 1:16:20 AM

Recently, our mail server crashed at about 7pm one night, with the error 'There is no more space for virtual disk ServerName_2.vmdk. You might be able to continue this session by freeing disk space on the relevant volume, and clicking Retry. Click Cancel to terminate this session.'
When we click Retry, the server starts up OK.
There are no snapshots listed in Snapshot manager for any of the virtual machines on the host.
There is also free disk space available on the host and for the VM with the disk errors.
This happened at least three more times, often at bad times. Each time, we were able to click 'Retry' and the disk/system would allow the VM to start-up successfully.
I checked the Forums, the VMware support articles and the internet as I had not seen this problem before. I have completed the VSphere 5.1 - Fast Track course and this issue was NOT covered in the training.
Most of the advice on-line and even that on the VMware web-site was pointing to snapshots being the cause of this issue. There are no snapshots enabled and I cannot see evidence of snapshots ever being used.
    - We are running VMware vsphere (5.1.0) and there are (were) 4 virtual machines running on the ESX host. We are using the free version of VMware/ESXi.
    - The Hard disk types we are using for this Virtual Machine are 'Thin Provisioned'.
    - There are 4 [Thin Provisioned] Hard Disks for this virtual machine.
    - There are 6 CPUs
    - There is 20GB of RAM (memory)
    - The VM is running Windows Server 2008 R2 as the guest/VM operating system. It is an Exchange 2010 SP1 mail server. There is plenty of available disk space on all the drives. The [Exchange] log files are cleaned out regularly (automated).
I decided to move one of our non-critical servers off this host and on to another host to see if this helped the problem. This took quite some time, as we are not using HA or vmotion, nor do we have VCenter Server...nonetheless, I finally managed to get the non-critical server on to another host (n.b. This was a much smaller machine with less virtual resources assigned to it).
After moving the non-critical server off this host, we decided to monitor the Host and see if the issue resolved itself.
I checked the host about 6-10 times a day, from first thing in the morning till last thing at night - monitoring the performance of not only the Virtual Machine, but the ESXi host also.
There were no adverse performance issues. The only thing I did note, was in the Summary page on the ESX Host, under Storage, was If I right-clicked on the datastore and clicked refresh, then the free disk space would drop (ie from 140GB to 125GB).
After monitoring the host and VM for about 2 weeks, we did NOT have another instance of the above error.
Sorry for the long winded post, but I wanted to give as much detail given this error has been raised before and snapshots are usually blamed as the cause.
    My question is this:
If the ESX host had plenty of available disk capacity and there were no snapshots enabled on the VM (or any other VM's on the same host), then why did our Virtual machine crash with the error that 'there is not more space for virtual disk Servername_2.vmdk'?
How do we prevent this issue from happening if we don't know the underlying cause?
I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions.
If I have not provided enough info on the specs or environment, please let me know and I will provide more information.
    Thanks all,
    Kurt

The type of storage is really based on your requirements, and your ability to withstand downtime.
iSCSI as you are using with a NAS such as Synology or QNAP.  NAS Selector - Support - Synology - Network Attached Storage (NAS)
I wouldn't use iSCSI for Exchange or any database.  It's a bit slow.
Do you have a single physical host?  Then I'd probably to an external direct attached storage.  This would be a card inserted in your host server that gives you multilane SAS/SATA connectivity (www.techcable.com/SAS-SATA/SAS-SATA.pps) and an external disk enclosure/array.
For multiple hosts to a single array, I recommend a fibre channel connection to a FC capable switch, and on to a FC connected array.
We used to use a HP P2000 (on old G1), but it's since been retired.  Worked pretty well once firmware was upgraded.  http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/disk-storage/product-detail.html?oid=4118559#!tab=features.  They can be connected via iSCSI, Fibre Channel or 6GB SAS so they are flexible and reasonably priced.
    Recommendations:
Use RAID 6 with your large disk arrays.  With large disks there is a measurable failure rate when rebuilding a failed RAID5 array based on MTBF.
Use smaller 15K disks in RAID 0+1 for speed on databases/Exchange.
Use slower 7.2K disks in RAID6 for file storage.
We are a small hospital and we have 3 VMware servers with dual CNA (FC and Ethernet in a single twinax cable) connections to 2 redundant Cisco Nexus 5K switches and then 4 Fibre Channel connections to an EMC VNX 5300.  It's extremely fast with about 50 virtual servers, but was quite an investment.  One thing we don't have to worry about is down time.  If there ever is an equipment failure, we have redundant everything, including power split between two UPSs.
Our VNX has 3 tiers of performance.  3 100GB SSD "Fast Cache" in RAID 1 with hot spare, to keep the most used data ready, but it's not really a tier, however one could be built utilizing the same disks.  A second tier is performance tier with a 8 600GB RAID 0+1 and hot spare.  The third is a bunch of 7.2K 3TB disks in RAID6.  The VNX autotiers, placing data on disks depending on where it's needed.  The volumes are sliced and diced automatically in the background to make this happen and we never have to touch it.  I used a demo of Solarwinds Storage Manager to monitor performance for a while and the utilization was always low, meaning all data access was fast, througout the day.

  • HT201364 how do i remove space from my start up disk

How do i remove space from my start up disk?

Do you mean "make" space on your HD?
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

Simple stats.  Buying 2 lottery tickets instead of one, gives you 2 chances to win the lottery prize. Not 1. Even though the odds of winning per ticket remains unchanged.
2 disks buy you 2 tickets in The-Drive-Failure lottery.
Back in the 90's, BT (British Telecom) had a 80+ node OPS cluster build with Pyramid MPP hardware. They had a dedicated store of scsi disks for replacing failed disks - as there were disk failure fairly often due to the number of disks. (a Pryamid MPP chassis looked like a Xmas tree with all the scsi drive LEDs, and BT had several)
In my experience - one should rather expect a drive failure sooner, than later. And have some kind of contingency plan in place to recover from the failure.
The use of symbolic links instead of striping the filesystem protects from the complete loss of the enchilada if a volume member fails, but it does not reduce the risk of loosing data.
I would rather buy a single ticket for the drive failure lottery for a root drive, than 2 tickets in this case. And using symbolic links to "offload" non-critical files to the 2nd drive means that its lottery ticket prize is not a non-bootable server due to a toasted root drive.

  • Adding unallocated space to root partition

Root partition is too small, so I wanted to add more space from unallocated space.
Problem is, that I can't expand root partition and add unallocated space to it. How can I fix it?
P.S. I used Live CD for that, but this screen is from current system (on Live CD, partitions was not locked). That's so, because it was too hard to make screenshot from Live CD.

bohoomil wrote:As your sda4 seems mostly free, you can a) backup its content, b) delete it entirely, c) expand sda3, d) re-create sda4. You can as well play with moving / resizing partitions, but the previous option seems better to me. Of course, create backups and use a Live CD so that all the partitions are modified when unmounted. The only thing you should remember to do afterwards is correct your fstab with valid UUIDs.
I'd second this. You could also (after you delete sda4 and increase the size of sda3) make an extended partition out of all the remaining space and then create a logical partition for (what is now) sda4 (it will get a different number when you do this).
Right now your unallocated space could only be used to add to sda4, because you have used up all your primary partitions. If you make a new extended partition and then put sda4 in it as a logical partition, you will be able to make more logical partitions out of the unallocated space.
If this is too confusing just go with bohoomil's original suggestion

  • How to add drive space from one drive to another drive in Solaris 10

This is something I have never done in Solaris. I have a mounted drive (UFS) with a dir being used for a samba share. The dir is near full. I have another drive right beside it that is empty.
    1. How can I add the drive space from the empty drive to the dir or drive that is nearly full? I have to access all files on both drives from the samba share.
    2. Can I do this without loosing files?
    3. Can I do this without messing up the samba share?
    4. Can this be done on the fly without re-boot?
    Thanks in advance.

I would start by getting acquainted with ZFS.
Make sure you have a recent Solaris 10 version with a stable zfs impl. like u4 and later.
Make sure you have installed reasonably recent Solaris 10 recommended patches - they make a big difference to ZFS.
    Simple solution :
    * put your new drive in a zpool
    # zpool create smbpool <new_drive_device, fx. c0t1d0>
    * make a zfs
    # zfs create smbpool/smbfs
    * stop your samba server
    # svcadm stop smb ?
    * copy your files to your zfs fssmb_ufs=old samba fs
    # cp -rp <old_samba_fs> /pools/smbpool/smbfs
    * un-mount and say goodbye to your old samba fs - /wave
    # umount <old_samba_fs>
    * expand your zpool with the old samba server fs partition
    # zpool add smbpool <device name for old samba slice, fx. c0t0d0s6>
    * move your zfs fs to be mounted on the same mount points as the old samba server fs
    # zfs set mountpoint=<old_samba_mountpoint> smbpool/smbfs
    * restart your samba server
    # svcadm start smb ?
It requires downtime for the samba server to copy the files, which could be cut shorter by using rsync, rsyncing while samba server online, stop samba server, rsync again for the changes while the first rsync ran.

Deleting 'ending blank spaces' from a character type field (ie info-object or text) in SAP is not meaningful. For all usage, a char type field of length 8 having value  'ABM     '  is same as 'ABM'.
Ok, HTML is changing the display in the above, so let me restate it
For all usage, a char type field of length 8 having value  'ABM_____'  is same as 'ABM', take the underscore character (_) in the first string as a placeholder for space character.
