Front Row- iTunes Top Movies

On Front Row, it gives you a list of iTunes Top Movies in the Movies Folder. If I click one will it play the whole movie for free?

No. All that you are referring to is just a listing. At most you will get a 3o second preview. You actually have to buy movies to play the entire length.

No "itunes top movie" in my front row

I cannot find the "itunes top movie" option in the movie section of Front row, anyone can give me some suggestion how can i find out that option please?

ITunes Top Movies

OK. Newbie question here. I selected a top movie in the "iTunes Top Movies Selection" and it started playing immediately (and indicated it was 2 hours 20 minutes long). I then cancelled (escaped out). I assumed that it would ask me if I wanted to rent the movie? How does that work? I hope it doesn't automatically charge my iTunes account without checking first?

It was definitely Front Row. The menu looks like the this:

I selected the first menu item, then the Top Movies selection, and then selected the movie ("Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End"). Maybe this is a new version of Front Row?

Front Row showing inexistent movie files

I've had some movie file in the Movies folder that showed up in the Front Row list in Movies, under the line underneath Theatrical Trailers and Movies Folder.
I have deleted the files from the folder and secure emptied the trash but they're still on the list in Front Row.
How is that possible and how can I make them disappear from there ?

No, Front Row should search in both locations. Music videos, movies and TV shows that appear in those categories in iTunes and are saved in your iTunes library should appear in Front Row under the "Videos" option. Also, any individual movie files (that can be played with the QuickTime Player application) that live inside your <Macintosh HD>/Users/<your user name>/Movies/ should also appear in Front Row, but they won't be categorized as "TV shows" or "Music Videos" like they are in iTunes.
Can you play your videos in your "Movies" folder with the QuickTime Player application by double-clicking on them? If not, then they won't appear to Front Row.

Front Row show iPhoto Movies?

As you know, iPhoto stores not only your photos, but any movies you've taken with your digital camera. Front Row shows all these photos, but it doesn't show the movies. Why is that?
You could of course import your digital camera movies into iTunes, but that gets a bit weird, because then you've got them stored twice, once in your iPhoto Library, and once in your iTunes Library. And with these AVI movies being mostly uncompressed, it can really eat up your hard drive storing them once, let alone twice!

If your movies play with the QuickTime Player program outside of iPhoto, then Front Row will be able to show them. The "Movies" section of Front Row only looks inside your "Movies" folder in your home folder for files. If you make an alias from the iPhoto library of your movie file into the "Movies" folder, then Front Row should be able to see them and play them. Remember, if you drag an item (or some items) while holding down on the Apple and "option" keys (it may be "alt" on a non-North American keyboard), you will create an alias where you drop the items instead of moving them. That might help you move several of them or even the folder they're in to your "Movies" folder.

Using front row to play movies you ripped yourself??

Hi,
Is there a way to use Front row for movies you have ripped from your own collection? I read in "Macworld" December 2006 that you can use a program called Salling Clicker (www.macworld.com/1721) with a cell phone (well it has to be a certain type which I don't have). Is there another way to get Front Row to work in this capacity?

If you are referring to DVDs, there are a few different ways--some are free/shareware some cost. Mac The Ripper is pretty good although it has choked on a few of my DVDs. Another, and my preference, is Handbrake. The pay version is DVDxDV.
Since Handbrake is my favorite, and has been able to rip every DVD I've used (except for badly scratched), the link is http://handbrake.m0k.org/.
I also create home videos using my camcorder--use Final Cut Express HD to generate the final videos.
If you want to add to the TV Shows or Music Videos, a program called Lostify can be used to set the attributes appropriately--this cannot be done in iTunes at this time. Lostify is free.
HandBrake has a lot of different features and I've tried most. My typical settings are: H.264, constant quality 60%, 2 pass, de-interlace, framerate same as source, audio leave in default. Perhaps others will chime in here with what worked best for them.

New Front Row, iTunes and Quick Time updater

For user that not aware, there is a new updater for mac which is Front Row 1.3, iTunes 7.0.0 and QuickTime 7.1.3.
For my self, I think the iTunes 7.0.0 is excellent, I found it helpfull to categorize the video and TVshow that I have into a big art image with all the titles next to it instead of showing all as list or as icon in previous iTunes. Not to mention that we can buy a full length dvd movie ($9.99).
I wish the price is the same as songs or regular video ($2.99)...lol

The Updates
A. iTunes
I like the new iTunes a lot, but my major problem is that my music videos (from iTunes store and other sources) are in my music library! When I am typing or on the internet, iTunes is in mini player mode. All of a sudden a video window pops up and starts playing (what else) a video. I don't like that. The music and video mix transfers over to the iPod also. The main reason I don't like it (on the iPod) is because the audio for a video is different than the original song. An example of this is, Don't Speak -by: No doubt.
B. Front Row
I always liked Front Row and don't really notice any changes to it. It used to be a little slow on the exit, but after the update works like normal again. Therefore, I assume the update for Front Row was for the inner workings of the application. No complaints here.
C. Quick Time
I don't really use Quick Time. I do most of my video watching in iTunes of Front Row because I don't have to pay Apple to watch stuff full screen with those applications. Although, most of my videos are in Quick Time format because it takes anywhere from two (2) too thirty (30) seconds for Front Row to load Windows Media Video files from my external HD. (I guess that IS a complaint for Front Row, but don't tell him. ^_^)
D. iPod v. 1.2
Nice! 1) I can adjust the screen brightness (to conserve battery life). 2) Quick scroll thinggy (I lack the technical jargon to describe it). 3) Screen has a little brightness while it's connected to my computer. 'Nuf said.
E. Summary
I update anything Apple tells me to. But I am having some regrets about iTunes. Nothing that is going to make me uninstall iTunes and reinstall it from a CD (say... the CD that came with my iPod). I have sent a suggestion to Apple, so if you don't like the way things are, I suggest you do the same because posting here will do little to get it fixed. To do it, go to the menu bar while in iTunes and click:
iTunes>Provide iTunes feedback
It should be something similar in Windows, if any of you guys and gals are reading this. Everything else is fine.

Why won't Front Row recognize DV movie files??

Hi,
I've placed several DV movie files in my 'Movies' folder and Front Row doesn't seem to find them. If I save the files as an MOV file, front row sees them instantly, but a) it doubles the file size and b) I shouldn't have to do that.
The first Intel iMac I had (which was returned for other reasons) saw and played the same files immediately after they were dropped in the folder.
Does anyone know why this might be happening??Does the recent Front Row software update have something to do with it??

Hey Rachel,
I use QuickTime Pro to save them as MOV files. If you want a free solution, I'm pretty sure you'd be able to do it using iMovie. Import the DV file and then export it as an MOV file. There's probably another free program out there that will do it more simply, but I haven't looked into that.
I think this degrades the quality a little bit though, and we shouldn't have to go to this trouble. The DV files (and any other Quicktime-playable format) should show up in Front Row if placed into your "Movies" folder. At least that's my understanding...

Can't play certain songs in Front Row: iTunes

I've just upgraded to iTunes 7.01, on Mac OS X 10.4.8, with Front Row 1.3.
When I try to play some songs through Front Row, I get a message saying "The Selected Song is not autorised to play on this computer" However the tracks play fine in the standard iTunes view, library and playlists.
It is not music I purcahsed from the iTunes store, it is music ripped from CD on an older machine and copied over to my new Macbook.
Anyone know if this is bug? and or how to solve it?

I am having a worse problem. Since upgrading to ITunes 7, I can't play some of the album I ripped from my CDs. I always use unprotected mp3. I have had to re-rip some of them, but I really don't have the time and patience to go through 500 plus albums. Any solutions out there?

Front Row, iTunes, and Rentals

Is Front Row going to be updated, when AppleTV is updated, so I can rent from front row or even watch Rented Movies from Front Row?

Front Row (itunes)

I doubt this is the correct place to post this but i could find no where else!
Does anyone have the following problems when using front row on an imac g5
1. Songs and playlists play in the reverse direction (i.e. if you open the playlist and press play it will play the first track and finish; if you scroll to the bottom and play it will work as normal (only backwards)). This applies to all albums/playlists/groups etc.
2. when selecting play all songs (in any category e.g. from a particular artist or all songs in library) the songs are arranged alphabetically and not in albums
There are a few more quirks i have but cant remember them at present! I have looked for settings but to no avail!
Any help would be appreciated, Garry

Front Row - itunes visualizer

Is there a way of using the itunes visualizer through when using front row? This would be especially cool when using the apple tv to send itunes content to my large tv downstairs, I've always wanted to have my itunes music playing in my living room while seeing the visualizer on my large tv. How do I contact Apple direct to suggest this if it won't do it?

Front Row not playing 'Movies' folder

Hello,
I have a 'movies' folder which I created in Finder. I have many movies that I made on iMovie in there. However, they are not showing up in Front Row's movie section.
How can I get them to appear here?

Well, I answered my own question. It was a different movies folder that I was looking at, and now that I moved my movies, they now appear in Front Row.

No video only audio in front row from my .mov files from my Iphone 3gs

Hello people,
I am having trouble with front row playing my video's shot with my Iphone 3gs.
At first, I only had audio and no video, but since the software update it was working fine.
But I just Imported some new vids from my Iphone to my mini.
The old vids have video and audio, but the newly imported vids I only hear audio and see no video....
Anyone knows how to fix this??

Have you tried loading Perian (www.perian.org)? That will provide you with many additional CODECs which SHOULD solve the problem...

Front Row / Itunes 9

I have an 08 iMac. I have not upgraded to Snow Leopard yet but recently installed iTunes 9. Now my FrontRow app doesn't work properly; it can't find any of the files. When I use the remote and select a Movie, Music, Photos, etc.. category it says that it can't find any files and to add them with iTunes. Obviously my iTunes folder is still full of files and I haven't moved their location. I'm guessing that his is just a glitch that occurred when I installed ITunes 9 but am unsure how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated - L Rembrandt.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have internet at my house and I ended up giving you some incorrect info. FrontRow CAN access my photos and videos that aren't stored in the iTunes folder. It's just anything that is in the Music > iTunes folder that it has trouble with. If I drag the iTunes Music folder out of iTunes and put it in the Movies folder FrontRow can then find them (but not play them as they're the wrong type of file). I have QuickTime 7.6 and don't think I actually have iLife, at least not one I can find by searching the hard drive. Without an internet connection it's become quite tedious to keep up with updates. Thanks for the info and any more you can pass on!
