Frustrated & confused!

Hi,
Getting very frustrated with BT at the moment. Aside from problems with my broadband speed, I'm wondering if we'll ever see Infinity around here. I've been interested in it since it was first launched, but everytime I checked the website it just said that it wasn't available in my area. So you can imagine how pleased I was at the beginning of the year when I learnt that my exchange (Claughton) was being upgraded to FTTC.
Have been checking regularly since I found out. The Openreach site says my exchange is accepting orders, yet the BT website still says it's not available in my area. However a relative of mine who lives less than a mile down the road has an estimated live date of May-June 2013.
So  I went a little nuts today and did some investigating.
This is cabinet 8, that serves my relative. Clearly not a new one, yet it's going live with FTTC in the next few weeks....
My cabinet is no.14 and is literally just around the corner from my house. I was very disappointed to see that it's still just an old style cabinet, with no new one in place fot the FTTC. The pic doesn't show it that well but there is plenty of space for a new one!!
Now literally over the road from my house is cabinet 15. This serves the houses in the road opposite me and is FTTC enabled, same estimated go live date as cab 8. As you can see, it has a shiny new cabinet sitting next to it.
I haven't worked out where cabinet 13 is yet, if there even is one.
I've done all the post code checkers and they say there's no info for my cabinet. But they also say that about cabs 8 &15, which are soon to go live.....
So I'm utterly confused. Will my cabinet be upgraded, wont it? Will I ever see Infinity?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Within an exchange area there will be some customers who can't get BT Infinity. There are several reasons why this could be the case:
Your phone line may be connected directly to the telephone exchange and not to a local street cabinet.
Your line may be too far from the local street cabinet to have a stable BT Infinity service.
Your local street cabinet may not be suitable for fibre optic cables.
We haven't yet got the council's planning permission to do the necessary work at your local street cabinet.
So, even though you may be within an enabled exchange area, it's possible that your particular line may not be able to have BT Infinity yet.
The availability checker at www.bt.com/infinity has the latest detail about what speed your line can provide.

  • New fonts look fine in Font Book don't work in apps

I need someone's help. I understand that to install new fonts I can either bring them into my font book (and chose whether they apply to a user or to the system) or can drag them directly into library/fonts or user/library/fonts. I am looking for some new foreign language fonts (e.g. hebrew - cursive, for example). I found some possibilities - ttf fonts - downloaded them, put them into my font book, they validated fine and within the font book they look right (i.e. as they are supposed to). I then quit the font book and go into my app, and it's not happening. When I go into MS word (2008), they don't all appear in the various menus (e.g. I made a font collection for one set, and only two appear in that collection), and when I go to use the ones that appear the font does not look much different from the latin alphabet font that was there before. So, I then tried Apple Mail and, while all the fonts appear in the font collection folder, when I choose any of them, same thing, my test letters are still in the same alphabet - size and intensity a little different, that's all.
Someone told me that for MS Office that there is a separate folder somewhere for office fonts - is that true - where is that? Also, why aren't any of my fonts doing what they're supposed to do in a native Mac application, Apple Mail, despite the fact that they look as advertised in my font books?
    Frustrated & confused...

my test letters are still in the same alphabet
To generate non-Latin text in a modern OS you can't just change the font, you need to change the keyboard layout. Go to system prefs/international/input menu and check the box for Hebrew or whatever you want, plus the box for "show input menu in finder." Then select Hebrew in the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder and type.
You need to make sure you use Unicode fonts. Also MS Word does not yet support correct Hebrew, so use another app. For that script, Mellel is the best. See the applications section of this note:

  • FIREFOX 35.0 'NEW' SYNC: I'm already signed-in to Sync but when I click on FF Sync/"Manage" in 'Options' I receive a message that my password is incorrect. Why?

    Hi Mozilla support,
My query is twofold but interrelated ... and sorry for the protracted dialogue, in advance :)
    (1) Regarding my Sync "Password" + (2) Strange issue in Options/'Sync'/"Manage
Set out below is my 'issue'.
Perhaps you can clarify what is going on here for me and help me to stop this strange occurrence.
I've used firefox since 3.5 and love it.
I now have Firefox 35 on Windows 8 (64-bit) with the 'new' Sync successfully set-up on a newish HP Desktop computer (Envy 23).
While my 'issue' doesn't cause a huge problem, it IS a source of unnecessary frustration & confusion.
If possible I'd like to eliminate that unnecessary stress and enjoy using FF again.
Additionally, I thought this peculiar 'issue' may be an indication of something else amiss in my FF Sync or my FF settings.
    Here is the scenario:-
At the moment, I'm signed in to Firefox "Sync" and it IS definitely syncing successfully - the 'circular arrows' spin around & tell me when it was last synced, so I know that's okay.
However, after the last update (to 35.0), I had to "reconnect" sync because it has "disconnected" .
I had terrible trouble signing back in, even though I was using the exact same password I had been using prior to the update.
After several failed attempts to sign in and FF repeatedly telling me I was using the 'incorrect' password, I closed the browser down & restarting FF 35.
FF had somehow 'signed me in' automatically - with the same password I thought was correct or not, I don't know.
Anyway, after all the trouble signing-in I not only felt dubious that all the data WAS syncing, I wanted to take a closer look.
But also I needed to check which password was being used for Sync, when FF signed me in (after the update & restart).
To double-check sync was working properly, I went into - "Options"/Firefox Sync/"Manage" - and was told that I needed to (quote): "Sign in, Continue to Firefox Sync".
I thought it was strange as only a couple of minutes before that, FF had already signed me in & sync seemed to be working. (the circular arrows were spinning)
Not knowing what was going on, I did as suggested by FF and entered my User-name & Password (for a second time).
I was then informed my password was 'incorrect' (please see uploaded/attached image).
I found this odd, considering this 'message' came up even though FF itself had signed me in to Sync after the update to 35 & restart of the browser.
What is confusing to me is the mixed-messages I'm receiving from FF.
FF must have signed me in to Sync using the very same Password that I've used since the 'new' sync was set-up & had been using for some time, but was now informing me in - 'Options/Sync/"Manage" - that the password was incorrect.
Although I am, at this moment, signed in to sync & it is working, I'm utterly confused as to what is or isn't the correct Password.
*If it can be avoided, I don't want to change it because I've saved it in so many places in PC, for future reference.*
Can I 're-save' the same password for Sync again, so that I can be sure that it's correct?
Also, for me, this strange behaviour by FF sync is an unnecessary source of angst and would love you to tell me what is going on or how to fix it please?

    # Yes, if you go to accounts.firefox.org, sign out, you will now be signed out.
    # Sign back in, and you will be asked to save the password you entered.
    # This will save the password and autocomplete if you have this option turned on.
I am not exactly sure why the menu did not detect the password change or if it was stored incorrectly after you changed it? But after storing the correct password you can manage any duplicate passwords in the password manager.[[Password manager - Remember, delete and change saved passwords in Firefox]]

  • How do I find missing/lost bookmarks I tried the trouble shooting section i just couldn't figure it out

I had a bookmark folder & decided to add two more. When I went to my folders I could only find one new folder. When I clicked on it, it brought me to the second new folder. I couldn't get all three to appear under the bookmarks section. I retitled them because two of the three bookmarks had the wrong bookmarked items & then I lost the third, which had all the original bookmarks.
I've tried your trouble shooting section, I don't understand all of the information. I have been through the trouble shooting section several times trying different options. I've gotten myself so frustrated & confused :( I'm hoping for a little one on one help.
    Thank you so much

<u>First steps read the articles & do the following</u>
    # manually backup your current bookmarks (as they are now)<br> see [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
#locate your profile, backup your bookmarks backups folder and the files it contains. See <br /> [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data#w_how-do-i-find-my-profile]]'''_how-do-i-find-my-profile'''
    *also see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Folders
    * put the new backups somewhere safe; outside any Firefox or profile paths
<u>Now look at what you have and keep the best ones</u> <br />
There are limits to what may be restored, depending on what you have done and deleted, but once you have taken the action above you have preserved whatever is there.
You can now try restoring any of the automated backups that Firefox has made for you (By default each of the last ten days). But take CARE any restore overwrites and destroys existing ones (unless it is from an HTML file then it is appended ). Always backup by exporting before you do a restore.
You may restore from any backup you have made by exporting the current state, you are not limited to just the automated backups.
Post back with how you get on and with any further questions.

  • What I-tunes versin do I need for an I-touch

    I just bought an I-touch,
and someone said that I had to update my I-tunes application to 9.0 to allow it to work properly.
SO without thinking this through, I updated I-tunes,
and now I-tunes won't work unless I update Quicktime to ver 7.5.5 or higher.
The problem with this is that,
I use my computer primarily for video editing using FCP 6.0.4,
which (from what I've read) shouldn't actually have Quicktime any higher than ver 7.4.5
if it is using (Tiger) OS 10.4.11.
(which is what I am using on my Power PC G5 Mac Tower).
    So now I can't open I-tunes 9.0.2,
until I update Quicktime to 7.5.5 or higher,
but I'm afraid that if I do I will end up causing problems with FCP 6.0.4.
This whole thing is very frustrating & confusing to me.
    So here are my questions:
What version of I-tunes should I be using if I don't want to update my Quicktime Player above 7.4.5?
Will I be able to use an I-pod touch with that version?
    And most importantly,
how do I uninstall the version 9.0.2 Itunes,
and reinstall an earlier version without losing all of my songs, music, & movies?
I'm sorry for the long winded question,
but I really need some help here!!!
    Thank you,
    Todd

Rather than thinking of it in terms of twice the size of your hard drive, I think it best to think in terms of 2 to 3 times the size of the data you are backing up. If your computer's hard drive is 500GB but you are only using 35GB of it, a 1TB drive is just overkill.

  • How To Import Muxed MPGs

Some of us mac users have cameras that record video w/audio muxed.
The problem with that is iMovie can't work with/import files with muxed audio. And we really want to use that amazing and easy-to-use application, but it looks like we'll have to buy a new camera or buy new software. Or worse, search the internet for help D: But wait! You don't have to purchase a new camera, new application, or do a confusing internet search through confusing forums and websites!
    Just follow these simple steps:
    1. Download ffmpegX from here: http://www.ffmpegx.com/
    2. Install it
    3. Open ffmpegX
    4. You'll be in the "Summary" tab in the left column drag your mpg file onto "From"
    5. Then click on "To" and select *"h.264 x264"* from the menu
    6. Click on the "Video" tab, and under *"Video Parameters,"* put in desired video dimensions in *"Video Size"* (keep aspect ratio the same as in your video to avoid distorting the video)
    7. Click on the "Audio" tab, and under "Audio Parameters," check *"Invert Mapping,"* (it's on the right side)
    8. Go back to the "Summary" tab and click "Encode"
    9. A separate application will open called "Progress," and in it you should see *"Encoding 'your muxed mpg's name' to x264 H.264"*
    10. A ding will inform you that the encoding processed is finish!
-if you hear a ding a second after clicking encode, you did something wrong :]
    11. Finally, unless otherwise specified, in the same folder your original muxed mpg there will be a new file with *"'your muxed mpg's name'.ff.mp4"* which can be imported into iMovie (just give it time, it could be 30 seconds, or a few minutes for larger files)
    12. Phew, now pat yourself on the back and encode the rest of the video files you want in your *New Project* ;]
    Tips:
-this guide was written using ffmpegX 0.0.9y
-the resulting mp4 file, although I'm no expert, will not only be able to work with iMovie, it will be a smaller file size and still have the same video and audio quality
-you can specify a different file name and save location of your converted muxed mpg if desired by clicking "save as" before encoding
-you can queue up videos to be encoded, by simply repeating the process with your other muxed mpgs
in other words you can spend 5 minutes queuing up all your videos to be encoded, walk away, shower, make a sandwich, eat it and come back to find you have a fresh set of Import-able mp4s :]
*-make sure you do steps 5-7 every time you first open ffmpegX to avoid frustrating confusion*
(I'm not sure how to save these altered settings as default :/)
    In Closing:
This works for my two of my video camera's muxed mpg files (I can't speak for yours, but I don't see why it wouldn't :]), and I've never encountered any problems with this process as long as I followed steps 5-7 exactly.
So try it out and I hope it works!
Leave any questions, corrections, or comments if you feel so inclined

Now I tried a Canon MXF to Avid converter to help me make MXF compatible with Avid. I think Pavtube MXF Converter for Avid is just the very MXF camcorder video converter for us to convert 1080p HD MXF for Avid editing.

  • Security 2009-01 and Java release 8 - which first?

Software update shows it's time for Security 2009-01 and Java Release 8. Java comes first on the list.
I do updates via downloads from Apple and install later. Should I install the Java release first?
    Mrs H
BTW - The updates for Security used to indicate "Client" or "Server". This one just indicates Tiger PPC, Intel Tiger, Server Tiger, Leopard Server etc - has Client gone by the wayside?

    Hi BDA,
A Safe Boot will prevent most of those from interfering, btw, this G4 I did the Alphabetically...
Alphabetically! Well, I'll be... I thought there was some secret significance here to the sequence - for example, you must do QT before iT.
...updating to had 5 Firewire Drives, 2 eSata Drives, 14 USB Devices besides the KB & Mouse, and four USB RAID Drives hooked up to it during the Updates... no problem here.
So maybe I don't have to disconnect my modem? (I leave the printer disconnected anyway, so I can connect to whichever Mac I need for printing)
Was that Klaus that told you that! (about points)? LOL
    No, just my own thinking.
Yes indeed, thank you again, great news that you're getting more comfortable/knowledgeable about your Macs!
And it's only taken 20 years of working with Macs to do that!

  • Pr CC / Mac - Cannot open project!!!

    '08 MacPro w/ OS X 10.7.5 - Pr CC v7.0.0 (was up to date but uninstalls/reinstalls)
I have been natively editing a multicam project for the last 2weeks:
    * 3Cams = 2 Panasonic AVCHD + 1 JVC GY-HM150U ProHD .mp4
I'm finished with the MultiCam and am now editing the last 2mins of my 2hour project when...  Pr CC CRASHED! It just dissapeared!!
When I try to reopen the CC project, I get: "The project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file of codec could be associated with this sequence type."
When I start a new CC project and try to import the JVC GY-HM150U ProHD .mp4 footage, I get: "Unsupported format or damaged file."
I have tried Uninstalling/Reinstalling Pr CC over & over but I am still unable to open the project or import the footage into a new project. I am also unable to update Pr CC via Application Manager: "Update Failed. Updates could not be applied. This patch is not applicable for you."
As we all know, the Pr CC project will not open directly in  Pr CS. No matter because now I'm being asked to enter my SN/Activate CS which is unable to connect to the internet. (I'm writing this via my connection to the internet)
** I've been at this for 2days now!!!
** Support has been frustrating at best.
    Anyone experienced this?
Any thoughts on how to get it all straightened out?
I may have to set aside time to redo my entire system as troubleshooting is too frustrating, confusing, and time consuming.
If I were to upload the Pr CC project file to my Dropbox... would some kind soul Download/Open it... and export an XML of the final sequence (07_ReCap), which I can then open in FCP?
(or at least tell if there is another problem besides the preview CoDec)

Hey man! I've been struggling with this issue for over a month and i finally solved the problem. Open the damaged project file with "TextWrangler" or any other notepad alike app and by pressing cmd + f find the 12 rows starting with
    "<MZ.Sequence."
and now open a not damaged project file with the text editor and find the same 12 rows. Copy and paste the ones from the working project file to the damaged one and save the file. If everything done right, then it should be working now Hope this helped
the rows should look something like this

  • HT4009 a fraudulent app

I purchased a fraululent app and I'm just so irritated by it.  Is it possible to get a refund?  It was only $1 so it's not going to make or break my bank accound but ti's the principle of the matter.  This jerk blatantly stole the icon design, photography, screengrabs from the app, and the name. And even more frustrating/confusing is that the creators of this app put in over 70 or so fake 5-star reviews.  Thoughts?

Try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via the Store > View Account menu option and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that app and use the 'Report a Problem' link and fill in details about the problem (iTunes support should reply within, I think, about 24 hours).
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work (it's been taking some people to this site on a browser instead of showing a form in iTunes) then you can try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page.

  • 24P or not to P, that is the question...

I was hoping someone could clarify the significant importance of buying a 24P camera in which the footage is going to end up on a NTSC SD DVD. I filmed footage for a film shot with a Canon HV20 in the 24P mode. The footage looks fantastic after you put it through Compressor and get 24fps.
To me this is all irrelevant however, I'll explain. After you shoot on the HV20 it records as 29.97fps. It is not 24fps until you pulldown the remaining frames in Compressor.
Would I have been better off just shooting on the 24P mode at 29.97fps and leaving it this way because IT IS GOING TO END UP BEING 29.97FPS IN iDVD WHEN I CREATE MY SD DVD PROJECT???? I ask this because of the large amount of time it takes in Compressor converting the footage from 29.97fps to 24fps.
I can not see any advantage at all in using 24P unless you are planning transferring to film which is 24fps.
If someone has a different view or I am missing something here could you clarify please? Please keep the explanation simple as I am not a super techie when it comes to these discussions!!
Frustrated, confused, and need of a simple explanation if I am wrong here.
    Regards,
    Rory

No...that is NOT the only advantage. Outputting to DVD is also a serious advantage, as, again, 24fps gets you more storage and better data rates. DVDs you buy with Hollywood movies are all 24fps.
Then there is the storage used to edit the footage on. 1 hour of Prores at 29.97 is about 76GB, and 1 hour of ProRes at 23.98 is 61 GB. Big savings.
Also, there are many formats of broadcast HD delivery that require 23.98 masters. I am required to deliver HDCAM masters at 23.98...sometimes HDCAM SR masters. So it is not only for film...

  • HT2128 downloaded programs appear in strange icons, unreadable, garbled

    Hi
I am new at understanding how the apple macbook works, for starters :I I can download software, but then I am stuck as to how to get it to open up so I can use it, instead I get a garbled picture of the download. Do I need some program that opens this ? and if so which one? I am trying to open up the Iolo System Mechanic that I have on another regular pc, but I want to use it on the Mac, any suggestions ? Thank-you in advance, someday I will get the gist of this MacBook which is beautiful to look at.
    Teresa

OS X is very different from Windows, and carrying over assumptions based on familiarity with Microsoft Windows and Windows-based solutions can lead to frustration, confusion and difficulty.  Windows tools and Windows programs will not work on OS X.
If you've not already done so, please take the time to look through Apple's Mac Basics materials to better learn how to use your MacBook and OS X.
As you first get going with OS X, I'd suggest limiting yourself to loading software from the Mac App Store (on the menu bar, select  > App Store), and to generally avoid loading software from elsewhere.  There'll certainly be times when you want to load software from elsewhere, but start out with the stuff from the App Store.
As for where you seem to be headed with that lolo tool you've mentioned, some general comments and opinions...
You cannot directly install Windows software such as System Mechanic on OS X, nor would a Windows tool such as that function on OS X, and would I generally recommend against installing any similar system-level tools — tools that claim to optimize, enhance, accelerate, protect, defend against malware or whatever else — onto OS X.  At least not until after you know a whole lot more about OS X, and about how OS X functions, and about your particular requirements.
I'm also skeptical around the value of anti-virus tools on OS X other than the integrated OS X XProtect tool, beyond — maybe — adding ClamAV.
For reasons of security on the OS X systems I manage, I don't install Oracle Java or Adobe Flash, and I specifically disable the automatic opening of safe downloads in Safari.
Now for completeness, there are ways to get Windows software running on OS X, but a tool that targets the kernel such as System Mechanic would know nothing of the OS X kernel.

  • Need To Name My IT Department Newsletter

I have been asked to start a monthly IT newsletter to send out to our organization with a few tips, how-tos, etc. related to common issues, questions, or new products we offer. My boss has asked me to look into the creative portion of my brain and pull out a 'cheeky' name for our IT Newsletter. This will be sent to mostly non-technical staff. I'm sure there are some individuals that are way more creative than myself. Something like 'ID10T Bits' may be a little offensive. 'Page cannot be displayed', 'Monthly Reboot', or 'Blue Screen of Death' may frustrate/confuse people. I'd like to see what my fellow nerds can come up with.

  • Heads up BT - Twisted waves.....

A striking demonstration of a means to boost the information-carrying capacity of radio waves has taken place across the lagoon in Venice, Italy.
As telecommunications have proliferated through the years, the spectrum has become incredibly crowded, with little room left for new means of signal transmission, or for existing means to expand their bandwidths.
In a highly publicised event in 2011, the team used a normal antenna and their modified antenna to send waves of 2.4 GHz - a band used by wi-fi - to send two audio signals within the bandwidth normally required by one. They repeated the experiment later with two television signals.
The results could radically change just how much information and speed can be squeezed out of the crowded electromagnetic spectrum, applied to radio and television as well as wi-fi and perhaps even mobile phones.

I expect to see this implemented on your future home hubs

No worries, but I forgot to add that the homeplug MUST be plugged directly into a socket and not on an extension lead and most definitely not on a surge protect style device. Also, I made sure to use the GigE socket on the Home hub to connect to the powerline adapter!
Days of frustration, confusion and experimentation have resulted in me finally getting the connection I subscribed to! Although BT still need to fix the dodgy cabling job (but that's another story!)
