Frustration with Safari

Is anyone else totally frustrated with an inability to save or print PDFs using Safari 6.0.3?  I'm tired of opening a PDF in Safari to see if it's something I want to print, and then having to reopen the same PDF in Firefox or another browser to print it and to save it.  It's been like this now for several months.

I think I finally solved my own problem.

  • Frustration with Safari pdf plugins

I've tried both Shubert and Adobe Reader PDF plugins and find they are both terrible. What I find most annoying is that I can't seem to accurately control scolling. The slightist slide of my finger seems to send the document jumping, often pages at a time.
Any thoughts? At this point, I'm tempted just to uninstall the Reader plugin and just use PDF PenPro.
    Thanks

    Preview works fine for me.
I used to use PDF pen pro, and at one time I've tried all the PDF addon things, but I haven't bothered with them in a while. Preview does a good job of annotating pdfs these days.
I'm an apple fundamentalist. If there's some PDF function I can't do natively with Safari and Preview, I probably don't need it in the first place.

  • Frustrated with Safari and Leopard

I am at wit's end trying to figure out what to do. There are dozens of websites to which I cannot connect. ESPN. Mac Daily News. Just about anything that requires a flash plug-in, but not always. I've deleted and reinstalled Flash. I've gone to an older version of Flash. I've fixed permissions. I've deleted plug-ins. I've spent an hour cleaning out preferences (wow, I cannot believe some of the stuff I've kept over 5 years of using Mac OSX, and migrating from Mac to Mac to Mac--but that's not relevant). I've removed every program associated with Safari. I've deleted plists. I've done everything I've read on here to fix safari. And yet, I cannot make Safari work with these websites.
Firefox and Opera both do not work with the same sites as Safari, so there is some commonality that is beyond my understanding. All three programs worked with all of the different websites in my bookmarks just a month ago. Everything stopped working as soon as I moved to the newest version of Safari. I just can't uncover what is causing it.
I hope someone knows what to do.

ESPN.com and Macdailynews.com are the two I use the most and the two most problematic. I must have some setting wrong. I can tell you that one of my iMacs has not been upgraded to Safari 3.1, and it's working fine.

  • Problems with Safari not being able to access key sites such as BBC news yet Firefox gives immediate access

Does anyone else have a problem accessing key web sites using Safari? I am frustrated with Safari particularly as I can get Access immediately using Firefox

    I regularly use cleanmymac
Which is a scam, but we can come back to that later.
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. Test. If there's no change, see below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Will not allow me to do much of anything with Barracuda Networks frustrating use Safari OK?

My ISP uses Barracuda Systems as a spam filter. I cannot choose the items I want to classify, the little box that I need to check in 3 dots. If I mouse to the three dots the box appears someplace else on the screen the vanishes when I move away from the dots. I have to use Safari to do this.
So why does Safari work and Firefox not. This started about 3 upgrades ago. Finally got fed up when the last upgrade was the same.

eBay does not support Safari in all functions.
    See this thread:

However, the short answer and solution is:
    Buy with Safari
    Sell with Firefox

  • Safari: Single Biggest Frustration with Leopard

I've never, ever seen as many spinning beach balls as I've had with Safari (v.3.0.4) under Leopard.
    Anyone hear me?
    YoungTurk

    Hi
Usually the "spinning beachball" points either to 3rd party related incompatibility problems, or a need to reinstall Safari. Either is an easy fix. Before considering a reinstall try the following:
For 3rd party add-ons, have a look via the Finder in either the HD>Library, or Your User Account>Library: InputManagers folder and/or Applications Support>SIMBL folder to see if any 3rd party items are installed. If you find any, go to the respective developer's site regarding Safari 3 compatibility and most recent version. You can also list them here and I'll point you to the next step. As an alternative, simply move the item(s) to the trash, then restart Safari.
3rd party problems can occur also with your Printer, or PDF reader. For the printer check the print vendor's site for latest driver information. If you use Adobe Reader or Acrobat for PDF viewing, version 8 is required for Safari compatibility.

  • Frustrated with all of it!! Music, Word, checking out.....

I have had this Mac for not even a year. Laptop Macbook 10.5.5. I pushed and pushed my husband to let me get this because I heard and THOUGHT it was the best system out there. Simple to use, solid system, better than anything on the market.
Ok, I have been NOTHING but frustrated since I got it. I realize that it takes a while to get used to something new like a Mac when you're used to using a PC all the time. However, this whole thing has gone on for almost a year and I'm about ready to just sell it and go back to what I'm accustomed to.
For one...when I used Word, which I bought special software at Best Buy to be able to integrate my PC work at my office with my Mac, I get error messages constantly, right when I'm in the middle of something, that tells me that Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. Then, it shuts down my whole Word doc without saving any of my work (!!!!!!) and has to restart. Says something about a kernal trap error when I click for specifics.
Second, I can't check out with sites like Wal Mart or Wal Greens when working on photo projects. Will just sit there saying "auto saving project" and will not allow the radio buttons to work for Check Out. This happens when using both Safari and Firefox. ???? Also, I can't upload pics to Craigslist or ebay. Nice. It just sits there, frozen when I try.
I want to be able to share music....just installed LimeWire. When I open it, within seconds, it says that it needs to close and relaunch for some unknown reason.
When I'm working in Excel, it constantly won't let me tab between fields and when I try to "insist" by tabbing, it shuts down.
I'm sure there are tons more issues that I'm not thinking of right now.....oh, yeah, when I'm trying to burn disks with pics or music, it tells me to insert a new disk, I do (brand new out of the box) it spits it back out and tells me that it's not a blank disk. Oh and if it's a CD-RW, it won't show me how to "erase" whatever NON file is one there. GRRRRR
I am seriously beyond frustrated with this. I paid a lot of money for this contraption and I can't even use it. I don't know if I can get some "free" help at a MacStore considering this thing isn't even a year old.

    Hello,
a ha! The Show Me state! It takes awhile to get used to a new operating system. Go here:

Are you doing any maintenance? First one to learn is how to repair permissions:
Run Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) and Repair Disk Permissions BEFORE and AFTER every software update. Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot. That will help keep your Macs happy!
Make sure the hard disk doesn't have any errors:
    To check the hard disk:
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click the Verify button. If DU reports errors, click Repair. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. In the Startup Disk window select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.

  • Frustrated with Mac Web Browsers

I am so frustrated with Mac browsers. I'm starting a Cisco CCNA class. I start at this page to get to my Cisco Academy log on.
    http://cisco.netacad.net
In the upper right hand corner is the logon prompt. When I enter the user id and password the screen refreshes to a blank window and at the bottom in the Safari status bar it shows "Done". No content is displayed. I tried it in Firefox, same thing happens. I have the debug option turned on in Safari and trying turning on the agent "Windows MSIE 6.0". Still nothing. I even rebooted and tried it. I can navigate all over the Cisco website but as soon as I try to log into the academy then nothing happens.
I went to my old PC and with IE and Firefox I was able to get in OK. What is going on in OSX that is not allowing the page content to display? Or is it Cisco ?
If I didn't have a PC I'd be in bind. You just can't switch 100%.
    Rant over.
    Thanks

Please let us know if you have any further questions, comments, or concerns.
    Thank you,"
There was a link in the email to reply to their email. When I click on it I was presented the login prompt for the Cisco Network Academy. I entered my login information and lo and behold my academy page appeared showing my curriculm links etc. I click around and everything seemed to work fine. I tried it in Safari and Firefox. Cisco has code in their login from the main academy page that has unnecessary restrictions. The link they gave me by passes that code I guess. I replied to their email and offered to use my Mac browsers to run through the curriculm and online tests. Hopefully they will respond positively and not ignore my requests.

  • FLASH 9 won't work with Safari 2.0.4

Installed, uninstalled, reinstalled flash 9. Works with Foxfire, but not with Safari 2.0.4. Tried to install flash 8 instead and it gave me the "update flash" page. Very frustrated. Please help. There is no preference file with "safari" in the name.

    threejay10,
thanks for pointing me to the other discussion thread on
    http://www.justin-cook.com/wp/2007/03/08/flash-9-doesnt-work-on-mac-os-x/
i am not that comfortable in Terminal so I opted for the one other option i could see that doesn't reliance on me typing a slew of sensitive characters into Terminal.
So, instead, I downloaded Pseudo from VersionTracker
    http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/9608
installed it in my applications folder. then dragged the Flash 9 installer onto Pseudo. Flash then installed perfectly and all is working well.
It seems there is a simple fix after all. Apparently Pseudo installs into the root and therefore, I assume, bypasses the permissions issues. After 2 days of trying to solve this, I"m happy it's over. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. I hope others can find this thread and the solution.
    Cheers, TM

  • What is going on with safari

For the past couple of weeks safari has been really sketchy on what sites it can open and major sites (apple/wiki/google) won't even come up and I get the display screen that says I am not even connected to the internet. What is going on?

I am having similar issues --- but only on 1 of the 3 Win XP Pro workstations I use. The two at work (Lenovo Desktop and Lenovo T61 Laptop) have no issues with Safari -- yet. My HP workstation in my home office was fine with Safari until the past weekend; now I always get the Safari Failed To Open Page message, no matter what I do. I've cleared cache, deleted cookies, verified no firewall issues, and even uninstalled/reinstalled Safari, but to no avail. Also, the Lenovo T61 works fine in my home network, so this is not a service provider issue. And IE 7 works as well in my home environment. This is definitely a Safari 4 issue, but it must be like looking for the proverbial needle in the haystack. Perhaps that's why Apple hasn't, so far as I can tell, responded...
Well, so much for the hype on Safari 4... the vaporware looks good but will ultimately only frustrate those looking for a better browser. IE 7 is still slow.... but it works.

  • Cannot read PDF files with safari

    Hello,
I cannot read my online magasine with my iPad.
When I open it as PDF with safari, I can read the first few pages but then it freezes and safari just shuts down. It's very frustrating!
There was a similar post to this in the Mac section where they suggest deleting all cookies, history and cache. I tried that but it does not solve the problem.
    Any help welcome!

It seems that the problem is due to safari crashing with memory overload.
I am very disappointed with the iPad. It would seem it is nothing but an overpriced toy. It's supposed to be the most amazing thing ever for accessing the Internet and yet I can't even read an online magazine. Should have thought twice before buying it.

  • Delay with Safari

Since yesterday, I have encountered a problem with Safari. When first starting up it takes a solid five minutes to actually load my homepage even with full internet service from my wireless connector. Once on Safari, if I want to go a website or fill in a password, after each letter I type the pinwheel comes up on the mouse and I usually have to wait 2 to 3 minutes before I can type the next letter. This problem also arises when scrolling and when going to click on links. At first I didn't think anything of it, but as a college student speed is everything for me and the fact that it takes me a thirty minutes or so to go to 3 websites to check my mail is beginning to frustrate me. This message in general is taking a solid chuck of my time as every few words the pinwheel comes up and I can't do anything on my computer. All other assets are frozen off and the only thing I can do is wait for the mouse to show up again. I don't know what I can possibly do to fix this problem or what is causing it. I've tried restarting and that seems to work briefly, but after about a few clicks on the internet that pinwheel of death appears again. Also, this has spread to my other applications including my word documents and just general searching in the hard drive.

    Welcome to the forums!
The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
Less likely, but possible, is that the slowness is caused by a Trojan such as the one called 'DNSChanger' or 'OSZ.RSPlug', which can alter the DNS settings of your network connection. This particular Trojan can be inadvertently installed if you have come across certain Quicktime movies where got a window stating that you have to download and install a particular codec in order to see the video.
If you have agreed to that installation, your system can be infected and your DNS settings altered, which results in your system using the wrong DNS servers, which can slow web surfing to a crawl.
This can be fixed by downloading and running a freeware utility called DNSChanger Removal Tool which you can download from here:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33696
Once you have run that utility you have to re-boot your Mac, then reset Safari, and re-enter your DNS settings in System Preferences/Network.

  • Okay. Audio problem solved. Can someone possibly assist me with Safari?

I downloaded Safari onto my computer after not having used it in some time and after being frustrated with Google Chrome and Firefox 24. Well, Safari is driving me up the wall now, as it is slow and will not allowme to download any apps! Everytime I attempt to download an app, it stops mid-download and I get a message on the screen, saying, "Plug-in Failure". Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Thank you, in advance, for anyone who does respond. It is appreciated.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
Make sure:  Allow Plug-ins   is selected.
I see your Mac is running v10.6.8 here >  https://discussions.apple.com/message/23790882#23790882
"and, when I do, it will not download completely. The download will begin, then stop, and I'll get this message on the screen saying "Plug-in Failure". I installed MacKeeper, and, it seemed to be helping, a little, but, when I read what people had said about it in here, I immediately uninstalled it."
How did you uninstall MacKeeper ??
