FStab messed up, root is read only

When upgrading my laptop I lost my fstab completely. So I let it sit, and it boot, however, I can't repair my fstab file because my entire root directory is read only. Is there a way to set the root directory to be writable in the command line? Thanks for any help,
JSkier

Command spit back it couldn't find / in fstab or mtab... I tried 'mount -t reiserfs remount,rw /' and got 'special device remount does not exist'. I'll keep playing and see what happens, if you have other ideas please post, thanks.

  • Darwin/BSD on Bootup and Root Device: Read-only

    I was if someone can help me out, My G5 boots straight into Darwin... When in single user mode I notice my 'root device is mounted read-only' is this a default setting?
    If someone can cross reference with their G5 i would appriciate it as I suspect that this is the cause that boots into Darwin.
    I have had a suggetsion to reset the PRAM, But before i do that, I would like narrow down the problem. A diagnosis of the system log is avaiable here.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4097429#4097429
    I would appreciate any help and suggestion.
    Thanks in advance

    Yes!!! I have escaped Darwin 'dark chambers', i never thought i'd be so glad to see a login window. but not fully out of the woods yet!
    Thankyou Wade for your assistance and pointing me in the right direction, i followed your 2nd suggestion but it still booted into Darwin so i then looked into the code you gave me and found this page
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
    And followed steps 5 - 6 (chmod 1775) and it booted correctly. nice man
    Small problem: - Whilst on the quest to conquer Darwin i managed to start up Setup Assistant where it prompt me user details and information in which i created a new user (unknowingly), now the login window just shows that 1 (new)user, but the previous users are still stored in a folder called Users in (HDD>Users) any chance you may know how i can reactivite them as full users without recreating new users and copying their files across?
    Once again thanks Wade.

  • Remounting Root Filesystem Read-only, what for?

    Hi.
    I have question. What really for while rebooting/halting system root filesystem is remounted? One second before all filesystems are unmounted. Why it has to be mounted when shutting off the computer.
    Thanks in advance.

    alexpnx wrote:I have a question on a similar topic... How unsafe is it if the system is rebooted or shutdown without unmounting samba shares? Can the shares be corrupted?
    I think the  file(s) you're writing to during shutdown can be corrupted (not all corrupted, but simply unfinished saved), if you write there at all, but not anything else as the partition is still up on the host and the host takes care of metadata and stuff - it's worse with local partitions where metadata and stuff can be saved uncompletely, which can lead to files disappearing all over the filesystem, some old files showing up again etc.
    Can someone else confirm this?

  • WebDAV how to make root folders read only but contents writable

    Hi everyone.. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out..
    1 PERMISSIONS
    I have a working WebDAV server. In each realm (or user account) they have a setup that mocks their home folder, ie, Documents, Movies, Websites, etc.
    How can I modify the permissions so that these root folders cannot be deleted, but they can obviously have items added/deleted inside of them?
    2 QUOTAS
    Is there anyway to add quotas to WebDav accounts?
    Thanks a lot!
    -Mel

    sorry guys..
    Just figured out how to sort out the permissions.. You need to modify the WWW user the way you would normally set the standard user's permissions..
    Any help on setting the quotas?
    Thanks!

  • [Solved]Root filesystem read-only at boot

    Hi,
    I can't boot arch. Root filesystem is mounted ro, so nothing works properly. Last boot I make a pacman -Syu without incidences. A few weeks ago I make manual intervention  (filesystem upgrade - manual intervention required from latest news). I think that last new (Users of unofficial kernels must enable devtmpfs support) is not the problem  since I don't complile the kernel.
    dmesg show 2 mount operations to /dev/sda3 (my root partition, EXT4 fs).
    mtab have 2 entrys with /sda3. The last shown "ro" flag, and some strange parameters  for me .
    Maybe is a disk problem? How can I remove this flag, or remount in rw mode?
    umount -f don't work.
    I use a dual boot with GRUB, and second system is  W7.
    Thanks in advanced.

  • Arch is mounting / as read-only post-install

    Okay, so I have no idea what I'm missing (I've done several Arch installs.) Machine is i686, no unusual hardware, and it's had Arch installed on it in the past. I run through the configuration, partitions, packages, etc., and when I reboot, Arch mounts my root as read-only..
    Any ideas as to why this would be happening?

    I understand, and thanks for your help. Fortunately I had just installed the system and didn't have anything valuable on it; Arch installs so fast that I figured it would be faster for me to run the install again and verify that my fstab was correct rather than try and chroot in

  • I want to mount / partition Read-Only !

    I have Arch installed on my Acer Aspire One... and it works great on this little machine!
    The Acer One has no hard disk, but uses SSD, so to reduce writes to disk i use EXT2, I have my /home on a separate SD card, and I mounted log and temp directories on tmpfs:
    /var/log, /var/tmp, /tmp, /var/cache/pacman/pkg .
    now i would like to mount the root partition (/) read only.
    the reason is that i want that filesystem (EXT2) to be safe in case of improper power-off or any other disaster ...
    this guide for Opensuse shows how to take care of resolv.conf and mtab files (which are, I suppose, the only files that need to be writable, after i moved the log and temp directoryes in tmpfs and the home on SD card)
    http://en.opensuse.org/How-To_Make_the_ … _read-only
    but then the guide advises to change some configuration files, so that the sistem doesn't remount the root partition read-write after fsck.
    unfortunately the files named in the gyuide are related to Suse, and i didn't find them in Arch...:/
    In fact i tried to add the "ro" option to the / partition in my /etc/fstab and i rebooted the system, but as root i can still write to the partitions..
      Ideas and Info ..?!

  • NFS for read only backups @ 127.0.0.1

    Hi,
    I am interested in Mike Rubel's idea of mounting a backup disc read/write within /root/ and read only for normal use within /. I am however a total first timer with NFS and keep get the following error when trying to mount the backup folder 'vault'.
    # mount -r -t nfs 127.0.0.1:/root/vault /vault
    mountfs: access denied by server while mounting 127.0.0.1:/root/vault
    Here is what my /etc/exports file looks like:
    /root/vault 127.0.0.1(secure,ro,no_root_squash,subtree_check)
    I only added the 'subtree_check' option in to stop from winging when I ran 'exportfs -r'. Does anyone know how I can grant the proper permissions?

    Oh and as a P.S: I should add that I am using nfs-utils and rpcbind as recommended in the Wiki.

  • [SOLVED] Root mounted as "Read-only filesystem". mkinitcpio issue?

    I am currently in the middle of setting up system encryption with LUKS. I have been making good progress so far, but I do have one remaining issue.
    After typing my LUKS password, the Linux kernel starts to complain that root is a read-only filesystem. "Starting NetworkManager... cannot touch file XYZ: Read-only filesystem". When it has finally finished booting, I am dropped into a TTY. I can log in and cat my files, but I cannot write to any files our use any programs that do (like pacman).
    I wonder if this is an mkinitcpio issue, but I am not sure. For whatever it's worth, here's my basic setup:
    * /dev/sda1: Boot
    * /dev/sda2: Swap
    * /dev/sda3: Root (LUKS/ext4)
    * menu.lst looks like this
    * /etc/fstab contains this line:
    /dev/mapper/root / ext4 defaults 0 1
    * /etc/mkinitcpio.conf contains these lines:
    MODULES="ext4"
    HOOKS="base udev pata scsi sata encrypt filesystems"
    edit: I should note that I did reinstall the kernel after making those edits to mkinitcpio.conf.
    Any idea what I'm doing wrong? As always, I really do appreciate the help. Thanks in advance!

    So it looks like this major problem was caused by a minor mistake. The file /etc/rc.sysinit was not executable. This made it impossible for the kernel to run the script, which in turn made it impossible for the kernel to mount /dev/sda2 (the swap partition) at /dev/mapper/swap. For some unknown reason, this in turn caused /dev/sda2 to be mounted at /, messing everything up.
    Anyway, a simple sudo chmod +x /etc/rc.sysinit fixed the problem. Thanks for the help, MadTux!

  • Kinit mounts root filesystem as read only [HELP][solved]

    hello
    I've being messing around with my mkinitcpio trying to optimize my boot speed, i removed some of the hooks at the beginning i couldn't boot, but then now i can boot but the root filesystem mounts as read only, i tried everything my fstab looks fine, / exists with defaults i tried to mount it referencing by it's uuid or by it's name and i get the same results, it mounts the filesystem as root only all the time no mather what i do.
    There is not logs since i started playing with mkinitcpio, or anything i searched everywhere in this forum and around the internet, and i can't find any solution that would work, i restored all the hooks and modules on mkinitcpio and the result it's still the same. i also changed the menu.lst in grub to vga=773 but that's about it.
    Can anyone help with this please i can't seem to boot properly.

    Hello
    Basically what happens it's that it loads all the uDev events then the loopback, it mounts the root read only, then when it checks filesystems it says
    /dev/sda4: clean, 205184/481440 files, 1139604/1920356 blocks [fail]
    ************FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED****************
    * Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root *
    * file system is currently mounted read-only. To remount *
    * it read-write: mount -n -o remount,rw / *
    * When you exit the maintenance shell the will *
    * reboot automatically. *
    Now what bugs me its that i can do that mount -n -o remount,rw / with no problems and when i do
    e2fsck -f /dev/sda4
    it doesn't return any errors just says that 0.9 non continuous.
    none of this makes sense to me!! thats why i though that the problem could be coming from mkinitcpio or something
    any ideas

  • Auto-remount of root file system, like read only

    Hello, I'm a newbie compiling kernels, but wanna learn. (I came here bacause i don't know how to solve this or where to find an answer).  I compiled some few... but, in the last days i'm suffering an strange auto-remount of the root fs "/", (remounts like read only) it's temporally fixed using fsck and rebooting. But a time later of reboot, i'm working, and suddenly the same error comes again. it's really disturbing, because force to reboot often.
    I think that is not a physical error. I did not have problems with badblocks. Something creates logical errors, either the auto-remount did
    Surely I have something bad on the kernel, and probably  have more things there than i must.
    On the other hand my /var/log/lastlog is always full of an strange ASCII and i can't see the boot info.
    this is my fstab:
    /dev/sda6 / ext4 noatime 0 1
    /dev/sda3 /home ext3 noatime 0 2
    /dev/sda5 none swap sw 0 0
    /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom auto noauto,ro,user 0 0
    #/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto 0 0 No hay unidad de disco flsexible
    proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
    shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noexec 0 0
    And a summary of my dmesg report

    Your drive must be dying.
    You can use SMART tools to check it.

  • Root is mounted as read-only

    Hello,
    I 've installed arch 2009.08 but when i am booting into my system a message appears that my / is mounted as ro (read-only)
    I ve to run mount -n -o remount,rw / to make it writtable.
    I ve used ext4 for / and /home partitions and ext3 for /boot
    Is there any bug with the latest 2009.08 images ?
    Thanks

    I f the device is valid and it really contains ext2/ext3 then the superblock is corrupt"
    Please run efsck -b <block> /dev/sda3
    Then my root partition has to be mounted using the command
    mount -n -o remount,rw /
    Any idea  ?????
    I ve done the installation using netisnstall cd because with the core one i had kernel panics

  • [partially solved] Root mounted as read-only, lots of errors

    I started my laptop without the power cord, and the boot stopped at several steps. I could continue the boot with pressing the power button for a second. XFCE booted fine, but some things were broken. Then I rebooted, and I cannot boot to xfce anymore at all (with or without power cord), since the root is mounted as read-only, and other partitions are not mounted at all. I didn't change my system at all so it is difficult to fix the problem. Now when I boot I just get lots of errors due to the read-only root partition. Fstab should be okay since it worked before, and has not been modified in months.

    It seems that laptop-mode remounted the partitions as read-only, because of bug in laptop-mode(?). I disabled that daemon, and now boot works. After that I can boot normally even with laptop-mode daemon, but now I'm afraid of booting without the power cord as that can break the system..

  • Reset lost root password and now have read only filesystem

    Hello,
    I have recently had to reset a locked root password by booting from cdrom, mounting the first boot disk, editing the shadow file to remove root's password and rebooting the system.
    The system has booted OK but, I now have a read only filesystem - everything in / cannot be edited, passwd doesnt work etc.
    df -k shows the root (/) filesystem has been mounted on the physical disk I edited:
    Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on
    /pci@83,4000/FJSV,ulsa@2,1/disk@0,0:a 10085836 185862 9799116 2% /
    but in the vfstab it still references the disksuite metadevice:
    #device device mount FS fsck mount mount
    #to mount to fsck point type pass at boot options
    /dev/md/dsk/d30 /dev/md/rdsk/d30 / ufs 1 no -
    So, can I simply boot from CDROM again, amend the vfstab to be /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 (instead of /dev/md/dsk/d03) and reboot?
    Any help with this is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Emma

    Remember if this is a mirrored drive, when you boot from CD you may need to mount both sides of the mirror and make changes on both sides- otherwise the replication may not goes as expected.
    Actually, I have run into problems with the modifying one side of a mirror this way. In the past Sun tech support would recommend that I break the mirror and then rebuild it once the system is up and running. So in your case you may want to boot from CD, mount the 1st disk slice, edit /etc/vfstab AND /etc/system, boot into the OS and use the various meta commands to delete and rebuild the mirror- or at least maybe to drop and reattach the 2nd 1/2 of the mirror.
