Kinit mounts root filesystem as read only [HELP][solved]

hello
I've being messing around with my mkinitcpio trying to optimize my boot speed, i removed some of the hooks at the beginning i couldn't boot, but then now i can boot but the root filesystem mounts as read only, i tried everything my fstab looks fine, / exists with defaults i tried to mount it referencing by it's uuid or by it's name and i get the same results, it mounts the filesystem as root only all the time no mather what i do.
There is not logs since i started playing with mkinitcpio, or anything i searched everywhere in this forum and around the internet, and i can't find any solution that would work, i restored all the hooks and modules on mkinitcpio and the result it's still the same. i also changed the menu.lst in grub to vga=773 but that's about it.
Can anyone help with this please i can't seem to boot properly.
Regards

Hello
Basically what happens it's that it loads all the uDev events then the loopback, it mounts the root read only, then when it checks filesystems it says
/dev/sda4: clean, 205184/481440 files, 1139604/1920356 blocks [fail]
************FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED****************
* Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root *
* file system is currently mounted read-only. To remount *
* it read-write: mount -n -o remount,rw / *
* When you exit the maintenance shell the will *
* reboot automatically. *
Now what bugs me its that i can do that mount -n -o remount,rw / with no problems and when i do
e2fsck -f /dev/sda4
it doesn't return any errors just says that 0.9 non continuous.
none of this makes sense to me!! thats why i though that the problem could be coming from mkinitcpio or something
any ideas
Thanks for your help, btw thanks for the quick reply
Regards

  • / Filesystem is read only

after installing and regular booting i get a lot of errors, basically stating, that the filesystem is read-only.
after login in as root, nothing works (e.g. dhcpcd complains about the ro fs aswell).
my fstab is clean, except some cd entries. there is NO swap or / given at all.
i would fill it in myself, but it is, of course, read only aswell
    any suggestions?
btw the root partition should be an ext3

Boot the install cd, mount /dev/sda3 under /mnt, and edit /mnt/etc/fstab.  If you just want a bootable system, put "/dev/sda3 / ext3 defaults 0 1" in fstab.  You may (or may not) want to switch to UUID notation afterward.

  • Filesystem goes read-only

    Hi, all
Yesterday, OVM Server3.1.1 was crashed. due to ovspoolfs.img was corrupted. I recovered ovspoolfs.img.(but OVM Manager didn't recognize that server.)
Main problem is that Filesystem goes read-only. I checked out /var/log/messages. but There are no disk errors or I/O erros.
Does anyone know what could be causing this problem or any solutions?
    Thank you for your help.

Thanks for all these great tips!
As R00KIE pointed out I don't have a good backup system. I think I will go to my computer shop next monday to fix some good backup drive, because this quite scared me actually.
As for now I acted as follows:
Reboot, try to remount /srv and /opt [they are on the same disk].
Result: Bulks of errors. Lots of "soft resetting link" and "link to slow".
Another reboot, which kicked me in single user mode. I was had to remount / and was able to alter /etc/fstab, so that /srv and /opt were not mounted by default.
    Shutdown system, open the casing.
Clean internals with vacuum cleaner. Unplug all harddisk cables and plug them back again.
Fire up the system. Mount /srv.
Try to make backup of important data on /srv.
This seemed to work, and there are no errors anymore. Probably some cable was loose, somehow. But I still do not really trust the situation, and will fix some backup routine.
Thanks again for all the tips and tricks. I will definitely run some extra checks and utilities from now on!
    jocom
    P. S.: Running "e2fsck -f -y -v" on both /srv and /opt says everything is fine. No errors, no bad blocks.

  • [SOLVED] Truecrypt mounts vfat volume as read only

    Hey there...
After the recent upgrade to linux 3.0.6-2  truecrypt mounts VFAT volumes as read-only. The file that I usually mount is in a USB which is formated as NTFS (I can copy and delete files from the USB). I think is a problem with the vfat filesystem but I'm not sure.
    Any help?

I apologize because of this post... The problem was in the file (something was wrong with the container)... so the solution was to do a new volume and copy all the files to the new file.

I tried to reboot in safe mode with Command+S and fsck, but after the steps to be taken, it says fscs not done, root device is read only. I also tried to bypass the Mac firmware password by taking one Ram card out and reboot the macmini while holding COMMAND+OPTION+P+R. But no luck. The macmini is not able to see the mac OSX installation CD.

How and where did you change which permissions? And what was the goal?
Do you have a complete backup of your system? and more importantly data files?
What happened that prompted the need to reinstall the 10.6.8 update?
The immediate road forward would be to boot from the optical drive and revert the changes you made.
What happens when you boot with the install cd and hold down C or hold down the option key?

  • "Root device is read only"-?

    Hi!
I want to test my RAM using Memtest and start the Mac in Single user mode. But at the bottom of a long text, it says
"Singleuser boot -- fsck not done
    Root device is mounted read-only"
What does this mean, and how can I change it?
    OS 10.6.4
    Kind regards - Hening.

    baltwo,
AFAIK, there's no benefit running the test in single-user mode. Just download Rember and run it.
Well the text displayed in the shell during the execution says that multi-user mode may be less reliable and complete. In my case, only 5 of 6 GB of RAM were tested.
So I tried to run memtest in Single User mode. The prompt looks like this:
    :/root #
and I type the path to the memtest folder which in turn contains the memtest tool; dates is the name of the volume, hening is my Home folder, bin is a folder in which I store bins:
    cd volumes/dates/hening/bin/memtest ENTER
    and get
    "no such file or directory"
    What am I typing wrong?
I wanted to try "~" for home folder, but can not find the tilde when in the command line interface. When I am in "normal mode", choose the US keyboard layout and open the Keyboard Viewer, it tells me that the tilde maps to "shift-<"-" on mine, and that worked. The keyboard I am using is a wireless keyboard with german Windows layout.
By the way, when I want to start in Single User Mode, I have to use the (wired) Apple keyboard; the cmd-s combination does not work in the intended way on my wireless one. However, once I am in the shell, the Apple keyboard strangely does NOT work any more, whereas the wireless one does.
    Kind regards - Hening.

My theory is: The laptop is waking up before the USB drive gets a chance to spin up.
If I'm correct, my idea is to find a way to have pm-utils set a priority on my USB interface in the resume stage so the USB can wake up before Arch continues trying to bring everything else up - Something I have no idea how to do.
    Any thoughts?
EDIT: Spelling. Sorry for the huge log... Figured the quote tags would have a max-height set on them.

    Hello fellow Archers.
Just to check if this issue was resolved as I'm having the same issue in a very similar scenario (I'm using Arch from an SD Card).
My netbook is an Asus 1201n sporting simple Openbox WM (with latest 3.0-ARCH kernel and updates) and I installed acpid, acpi-eeepc-generic package from AUR and laptop-mod-tools and configured as per the 1201NL wiki page and also read the acpid and pm-utils wiki pages.
My logs are pretty similar to OP's.
Let me know if this was already solved and/or if you need additional info to help us troubleshoot this issue.
    Thanks.

    Edit: Adding some more details.

  • How could I create, force mount, and burn a read-only cross-platform .iso image?

    Hello,
I am new to this group.
I want to perform the following steps as quickly as possible.
    1. Create a cross-platform .iso
    2. Mount the cross-platform .iso as read-only
    3. Unmount the cross-platform .iso
    4. Finally, burn the cross-platform read-only .iso to CD-R media
I need someone to give me an example and step-by-step instructions by using the hdiutil command in Mac Terminal.
Thanks in advance for your responses.
    John P.

    1. Create a cross-platform .iso
    hdiutil makehybrd -o image-file source-directory -iso -iso-volume-name volume-name
    2. Mount the cross-platform .iso as read-only
    hdiutil attach image-file
    3. Unmount the cross-platform .iso
    hdiutil detach /Volumes/volume-name
    4. Finally, burn the cross-platform read-only .iso to CD-R media
    hdiutil burn image-file
For more information, see the man page for hdiutil(1).

  • External Drive Permissions Locked to Read ONLY - HELP!

    Hello:
I have recently moved from a powerbook to an imac. The external I used with the powerbook was working fine until I began to use it with the imac. Once I hooked it up to the imac, I only had read permissions. I have never set any of the permissions on the disk and have always left it open. Thinking it was just the imac, I plugged it back into the pb, to find it was also appears locked to read only. I have gone through the web looking for solutions and I cannot seem to find a solution.
When I open get info about the disk, under sharing and permissions, its says "you can only read"
under the list of name: wkim has read and write privlige, staff and everyone get read only. I am wkim, so what gives? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

ok. my problems were probably not related and were fixed by reinstalling 10.5.2 with the Combo Updater found on (www.apple.com/downloads)...this probably won't help you but won't hurt so may be worth a try...
your permission problems probably have something to do with user IDs changing from one machine to the next. Try first to "repair permissions" with Disk Utility on your main HD. you can also go to Terminal and navigate to the problem directory and enter "ls -ln" to see what user ID and group ID own the files. then type just "id" to see what your local ID is. if they don't match then you'll probably need to change them with chown or chgrp.
hopefully someone else will chime in here as 10.5 has created convoluted permission problems and I still haven't worked out my own...

  • A mounted drive became as read-only file system.

I have a 3 TB partition on a 4 TB LaCie drive connected via Firewire 800.  Up until a week ago, the partition was dedicated to TimeMachine.  Since only 682GB of the 3 TB was used, the other day, I copied three directories of 500 mb, 25 gb and 45 gb to this partition using CarbonCopyCloner.  Now several things have happened.
    1.  Time Machine reports the drive is read-only and fails.
    2.  Get Info for the partition and the four directories (fourth on is the sparse bundle ceatec by Time Machine) are reported as read only
    3.  I am unable to delete the directories I copied or any files in them.
Anyone know what went wrong and how to correct it.
I should mention that the partition is formatted as Mac OS Extended and the Drive is partitioned as GUID Partition Table.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

You mustn't copy files to a Time Machine disk. Open Disk Utility, select it and repair the disk

  • Placing root filesystem on /dev/sda1/FOLDER [SOLVED]

Is it possible for me to place a root filesystem inside a folder on a partition?  If so, what would the menu.lst line look like to boot the thing?
    Example:
On /dev/sda1 I'd like to have:
    /archi686
    /arch_x86_64
Last edited by graysky (2011-10-14 23:02:57)

Sounds like you want btrfs's subvolumes. This would be extremely awkward with any other filesystem and would require hacking on mkinitcpio.

  • Can't mount root filesystem, even though it's there

I've moved my system to a new hard drive as described at http://oreilly.com/pub/h/2504 , but I'm having issues booting. GRUB starts the kernel okay, which runs fine until it tries to mount the root drive. It does the "Waiting 10s for /dev/whatever" bit and finds it, but then mount complains "No such file or directory", which is ridiculous, since both it and /new_root/ are clearly there.
This seems to be a problem with mount and /dev--I can mount /bin/ls on /new_root (or at least try to without mount complaining about its existence, though it does freeze), but I can't try anything in /dev, e.g. mounting /dev/zero also returns "No such file or directory", though it should return "/dev/zero is not a block device" based on what it does in my other system.
    What's going on?

You do not have a virus.  See my Mac Malware Guide.
As to what is going on, I'm not sure.  Have you tried restarting the machine?  If that makes the problem go away, I wouldn't worry about it further unless it recurs.
(Note that my pages contain links to other pages that promote my services, and this should not be taken as an endorsement of my services by Apple.)

  • N800 mounts SD card as read only

I have 2 SD cards mounted in my N800, the internal card is being mounted RW, but the external card is being mounted RO. This is causing me problems when I try to use the Canola plugin for YouTube. It attempts to write data to the external card and errors out because the file system is ready only. How can I change it so that it mounts both cards RW?

Reformatted the card in the unit and it is now working properly.

  • My MBP won't boot; verbose mode gets stuck at "filesystem is read-only". What do I do?

About a day ago I plugged an SD card into the slot and the OS froze (I'm guessing due to corrupted files). Since then, the computer either takes 10-15 minutes to boot and then freezes on my first app launch, or doesn't boot at all.
I am doing my high school media exams and I need FCP to work right away. This situation is very frustating, can anyone help me? Would Disk Utility First Aid through Target Disk mode help? Should I just use another computer? I have two days to get my stuff done, and I need every minute of my time.
    Thanks in advance!
    Aron

OK, now the optical drive is just spitting out the OSX install disk and making weird noises. I think it's dead.
Also, the computer doesn't show up as a FW drive when I connect it to another Macbook and boot it into Target Disk mode.
Can someone tell me what's going on with my computer? This is seriously freaking me out.
