Full Page Background in Internet Explorer 8 and Below

I am currently trying to achieve a full page background image using the method found here: http://cookbooks.adobe.com/post_Scale_Background_image_to_browser_size-17590.html
Everything works fine in FF, Chrome, and Safari, but when I preview the page in IE 8, the image shows up as being centered in the page and does not stretch to fill the whole browser.
You can see this here: www.virtualeconomyonline.com
Here is the CSS:
html {
     background: #F4EEFE url(../images/grass.jpg) no-repeat center center fixed;
     -webkit-background-size: cover;
     -moz-background-size: cover;
     -o-background-size: cover;
     background-size: cover;
     overflow: auto;
body {
     -ms-filter:"progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader(src='../images/grass.jpg', sizingMethod='scale')";
     filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader(src='../images/grass.jpg', sizingMethod='scale');
Does anyone have any ideas why it might not be filling the whole browser in IE 8 and under?

Hi
As the tutorial says, don't apply this to the html tag, (there is no reason to apply anything to the html tag any more).
Move all the css that you have to the body tag css.

    If you look at this page in Firefox, http://www.vpi-corp.com/Empower-Demo/index-iframe.asp, you will see that the html portion of the page loads, and if you right click in the white area in the middle, the Flash is present as well. I can view this page correctly in Internet Explorer and Chrome. I have tried to export the movie as far back as Flash 7.0, but will not resolve. I have also been able to see this video for a while in Firefox, but then mysteriously went away. Any help would be appreciated. I suspect some patch to the programming on this page will be necessary.

    That f4v file is send as text/plain, maybe that is causing it

  • Two Separate Problems -  1) Some website elements missing in Internet Explorer and 2) Site manager page Locks up

    1) I have two forms created in FormsCentral embedded on my website www.videoaldeco.com . They do not appear in Internet Explorer. They work in Firefox and Safari on my iPhone. However, the problem only occurs on this computer. I tried another PC and the forms appear fine in Internet Explorer.
    2) When I go into Site Admin Console page from Muse, Internet Explorer locks up almost every time. Only Windows Task Mngr can shut it down. Then it wants to recover page. Recovering page only locks up again.

    Hi
    Answering the questions :
    1) I am not able to replicate as it works on my end , form loads fine on IE. Please let me know the IE version you are using.
    2) I don't see the same issue with site manager , please check the browser plugins and try to disable all and then check.

  • Internet Explorer and FireFox do not support Go To A Page View links

    Internet Explorer and FireFox do not support Go To A Page View links between PDFs created with Acrobat 8 Professional. Safari does support the links. Similar problem on both PC and Mac.
    Two possible errors occur: (1) the error message “page not found”; or (2) nothing at all happens – the reader does not leave the page.
    Do you have any suggestions?

    Check the target field in the Firefox desktop shortcut and make sure that you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables).
    Always make sure to start at least the default profile without the -no-remote command line switch.
    If you need to have more than one profile open at the same time then start subsequent instances with the -no-remote command line switch.
    You can not send links from other programs to a Firefox instance that is started with the -no-remote switch.
    In such a case you need to drag links in a Firefox window or paste the link in the location bar.

  • How to create a full page background image that is fluid?

    I'm creating a website for my portfolio, and one of the things I wanted to have is a full page background image that the div tags are in.  I know there is a way to put it in via page properties, but that doesn't allow you to add CSS styles and I want the image to re-size with window changes.  This requires putting the image in a div tag, but then it pushes the other div tags (such as my header section and navigation) so that they aren't over the image like I want.  Is there a way to push the image div tag to the back so that the other div tags go over it.
    I'm using HTML5, and it will also be a responsive design, but the fluid background is only for desktops.
    I don't go on the adobe website often, so if you have an answer to this, or need more information to figure it out please email me at [email protected] and you'll get a faster reply than on this forum.
    Thank you everyone for your help.

    You should set this forum to email you on a reply.
    I don't have a link in your question to determine how you are trying to do this, but here's a technique I have used:
    Take a look at this website and see if it doesn't have what you are trying to do. You'll see the flag in the background and I have used opacity in the layers on top of it to keep the flag somewhat visible.
    Now, what the flag does not do is re-size itself with the viewport (the browser window). But the flag is in a div that sits on top of the body. My code is accessible, but you're looking for the flag div and it's defined in CSS thusly:
    #flag {
              width: 100%;
              background-image: url("../images/polish-flag.png");
              background-repeat: no-repeat;
              min-height: 900px;
    Now, CSS3 adds a new attribute you can apply to the background image thusly:
         background-size: 100% 100%;
    That would make your background fill the viewport.
    I chose to not do that, because I was worried about versions of Internet Exploder before 10.

  • Mm_menu.js HTML5 changes Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox

    Mozilla Technical Support,
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ie/bg182625(v=vs.85).aspx
    mm_menu.js is an output of Dreamweaver and enables drop-down menus. Microsoft is eliminating
    document.all and replacing it with document.getElementById
    to comply with HTML5 standards
    I modified mm_menu.js as Microsoft recommended (so I thought) and it worked perfectly well in Internet Explorer. However, I couldn’t get the drop-down menus in Mozilla Firefox. What do I need to do to get mm_menu.js to work or does Firefox need to make additional modifications?
    FYI, I tried using the following quick fix which resulted in the Internet Explorer page displaying incorrectly:
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=9"/>
    See below for the modified version of mm_menu.js
    It would be nice if the same javascript worked in both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
    Thanks,
    Robin Rembish

    Yeah, it would have been nice if IE had followed web standards over the years before IE11 came out so that programs like Dreamweaver would have "gotten it right" from the beginning, instead of their users having to "patch" the code output by Dreamweaver to make it compatible now. That's what the "like Gecko" is all about = make it work like Mozilla.

  • Trying to log into a web site i could yesterday. will nt recognize password. it works on internet explorer and my ipad

    web site is stampworld.com firefox saved an incorrect username and would not let me change it.. i went into password under tools and deleted the entry for this web site.. it no longer autoenters the wrong id or autoenters a pass word but still does not let me log on.. I use the correct id and when i enter the password and click log in the page flickers and the password field clears but will not log me in. id and password works perfectly on internet explorer and my ipad.

    When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
    Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
    Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
    orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
    On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
    If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
    Then try reloading the page and logging in again. Does that help?

  • Mostly websites are not open on internet explorer and other browsers in my laptop

    mostly web sites are not open in internet explorer and other web browsers in my laptop.

    Rob,
    Many thanks for your reply.  It is appreciated greatly.  I have added text against each of the points that you raise.
    troubleshooting Addons is somewhat complex.....as from this side we do not know which addon may be causing the problem, so the
    only recourse is to disable the types of addons that commonly cause problems in IE (for security and usablility reasons some older addons that you may have used previously with IE8/XP are no longer compatible with newer versions of IE that you are now using)....
    The following instructions will stop your Toolbar and Browser Helper addons from loading in IE.
    Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>Advanced tab,
    uncheck "enable third-party browser extensions".
    close any open IE windows and restart IE for the changes to take effect.
    [GotaQ: Yes, did this but the problem then is that IE won’t open for me.  There is no icon in the start menu or task bar
    and routes such as using a command prompt or ‘run’ instruction don’t work.  When I try this I get a window on screen that flickers for a bit and then disappears.]
    Alternatively, your problem with keyboard input is most likely being caused by a form filling addon or a finger print reader
    addon? Note: some addons like the Google toolbar have multiple features like form filling, you can disable the GTB's form filling features from its settings dialog (click the 'spanner' icon on the toolbar)
    Use Tools>Manage Addons>Show all addons to locate any such addons and use the Addons Manager to disable them. (close and
    reopen any open IE windows for the full changes to take effect).
    [GotaQ:  I tried disabling all of the add-ons in Google Chrome and the key-stroke mapping problem persisted, unfortunately!]

  • Flash Player Freezing and Crashing Internet explorer and Google Chrome

    Hello,
         I have a dell xps 16 running on i7, windows 7 home premium 64 bit, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd. For at least a year i have been having problems viewing sites that use flash player such as youtube, and facebook. I orginally thought my anti virus was the problem because when ever I uninstalled it the flash began to work. I switched anti-virus programs about 3 times go from mcafee to kaspersky to avg 9.0 full...and it still would freeze up on me. Now it  has been 2 weeks since I uninstalled avg 9.0 and now it has started freezing up my internet explorer and chrome when ever i go to youtube or facebook. Also for some strange reasion it also is making some of my programs like pinnacle studios 14, itunes, and window media player unresponsive. Currently I have taken flash out of my computer. And i have to use my ipad to view youtube videos..but i still can not view flash. I have heard this has happended to many people on mulitple o.s. , Please help. I have tried reinstalling it and it says that instalation failed evertime. Ive also tried reinstalling my os with no success. I ve tried reseting my browsers and reinstalling them....no success.

    Hi a, I wonder what happened since it was working on 7/21/10. Then after you Installed AVG9 you started having problems, even after disabling the AVG add ons, etc.
    You have had this freezing issue for awhile and I don't know what is causing it, although cleaning up McAfee certainly helped and the Re-Install of Flash Player.
    I think the first thing you should do is go to the Kaspersky website and find out if there is an Uninstaller to use and use it if there is. Then I would go to AVG 9 and do the same. Then Reboot after using each one. That way you will have had a Clean Uninstall of both of them.
    Then go to Microsoft and Install Windows Defender. That way you would have some protection and that along with the Windows Firewall will help until we see what is causing this freezing and then you can Install AVG again.
    Also these: Dellweb cam central, informational alerts, dell data safe online, oovoo, fastaccess.. I wonder if any or a combination are conflicting. Have you had these for sometime or were any added about the time you started having issues? I am not familiar with them, but if they are in your system tray, I would guess they use Flash? I would try to disable them all at once, try your websites, especially youtube. If you have no problem, enable only one of those and test youtube again. Then enable another one and so on and if any are conflicting, you will be able to find the one.
    Thanks

  • Full page background

    hi i want to create a full page background on my website, i want it to scroll aswelll as ive tried a method before but it didnt seem to work as everything else scrolled up expect the background so it didnt look right
    here are some examples of what i want :
    http://www.roundhouse.org.uk/
    http://www.fabriclondon.com/
    cheers in advance

    What have you tried? Can you give us a link to a live page somewhere?
    If you are using HTML5 and CSS3 to generate a graduated background, you may set up a non-scrolling one thusly:
    body {
              font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
              font-size: 100%;
              color: #000000;
              background-color: #fff;
              margin: 0;
              padding: 0;
              background-repeat: no-repeat;
              background: #402a67; /* Old browsers */
              background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #402a67 0%, #ffffff 70%) fixed no-repeat; /* FF3.6+ */
              background: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, color-stop(0%,#402a67), color-stop(70%,#ffffff)) fixed; /* Chrome,Safari4+ */
              background: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, #402a67 0%,#ffffff 70%) fixed; /* Chrome10+,Safari5.1+ */
              background: -o-linear-gradient(top, #402a67 0%,#ffffff 70%) fixed; /* Opera11.10+ */
              background: -ms-linear-gradient(top, #402a67 0%,#ffffff 70%) fixed; /* IE10+ */
              filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient( startColorstr='#402a67', endColorstr='#ffffff',GradientType=0 ); /* IE6-9 */
              background: linear-gradient(top, #402a67 0%,#ffffff 70%) fixed; /* W3C */
    I should mention that this does scroll on iOS mobile devices I have used. I'm thinking it's a limitation of either Mobile Safari or iOS.
    If you look at the background setup there, you'll see the call "fixed." Take that out, and you get a scrolling background. Here is an aside in the same website:
    aside {
         width: 250px; float: right; margin-left: 8px;
         margin-right: 5px;
         background: #f6d78d; /* old browsers */
         color: 000000;
         background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #f6d78d 0%, #fbf6f6 100%) no-repeat; /* FF3.6+ */
         background: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, from(#f6d78d), to(#fbf6f6)); /* Chrome,Safari4+ */
         background: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, #f6d78d 0%,#fbf6f6 100%); /* Chrome10+,Safari5.1+ */
         background: -o-linear-gradient(top, #f6d78d 0%,#fbf6f6 100%); /* Opera11.10+ */
         background: -ms-linear-gradient(top, #f6d78d 0%,#fbf6f6 100%); /* IE10+ */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient( startColorstr='#f6d78d', endColorstr='#fbf6f6',GradientType=0 ); /* IE6-9 */
         background: linear-gradient(top, #f6d78d 0%,#fbf6f6 100%); /* W3C */
         border-color:#000;
         border-style:double;
         border-width:thick;
         border-radius:15px;
          box-shadow: 5px 5px 5px rgba(0,0,0,0.5);
    When I first created the Aside, I was copying the gradient call from the body element and, since it was set to fixed, it changed as you scrolled. Took me a bit of time to understand that one could take that out and get the effect one wanted.
    With respect to image files, they're simpler, as one does not have to create a CSS3 call for each browser.
    Simply call your background image. For the fabriclondon.com one, they may have a simple call to a color for three divs. Or, they may have a two or four-pixel GIF file that mades the top and bottom black and the middle white, with a "repeat-x" statement:
    background-repeat: repeat-x;
    That will cause the browser to load a very skinny image and then "tile" it left and right. Please remember that, by default, all background images are repeated both X and Y.
    One may also make an image like in the roundhouse.org be a background for a div or a background image for the whole page (in the body statement). Roundhouse put theirs in the body:
    body{
         font:62.5%/1 Arial,Verdana,Helvetica,sans-serif;
         margin:0;padding:0;
         background:#FFF url(/sites/all/themes/roundhouse/css/images/body-bg.jpg) top center no-repeat;
         color:#333;
         text-align:center;
    Make sense?

  • How to close Internet Explorer and other programs running on Windows?

    In order for Flash Player to be installed or updated, any programs that use Flash Player must be closed.  This includes Internet Explorer or other browsers, instant messengers, Skype, etc.
    These programs may be running in the background, not as visible windows, but need to be closed anyway.
    To close such programs use the Windows Task Manager.  To start Task Manager, take any of the following actions:
    Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Task Manager.
    Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
    Right-click an empty area of the taskbar, and then click Task Manager.
    Once the Task Manager is running, select the Processes tab.  On older Windows version you may need to click on the Process Name or Image Name header to sort the process names.
    Now right-click on every process that the Flash Player installer needs to close (e.g. iexplore.exe), then select End Process.
    It would be desirable if the Flash Player installer could perform that action by itself; I have therefore created an enhancement request.  If you were affected by this problem, please head over to the Bugbase and vote for this request: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3548136
