Functions used in INSERT statement

i created 10 functions,eg, get_value(p_code, p_date). Each function only runs a very simple SELECT sql to retrieve the value from an individual mapping table based on 2 parameters input.
I want to transform the records from TABLE_B to TABLE_A for 2 million records as follows:
INSERT INTO TABLE_A
(EVENT_DATE
A_FIELD_01_CDE,
A_FIELD_01_VAL,
A_FIELD_02_CDE,
A_FIELD_02_VAL,
A_FIELD_10_CDE,
A_FIELD_10_VAL)
SELECT sysdate,
B_FIELD_01_CDE,
get_value(B_FIELD_01_CDE, sysdate),
B_FIELD_02_CDE,
get_value(B_FIELD_02_CDE, sysdate),
B_FIELD_10_CDE,
get_value(B_FIELD_10_CDE, sysdate)
FROM TABLE_B
Is this a good way to do so? Or I should write in another approach, eg, UPDATE each field one by one?
Thanks.

If just a table transformation has to be done, the first thing I would consider would be:
insert into table_a
select sysdate
       b_field_01_cde,
       (select single_value from mapping_table <using b_field_01_cde and sysdate>),
       b_field_02_cde,
       (select single_value from mapping_table <using b_field_02_cde and sysdate>),
       b_field_10_cde,
       (select single_value from mapping_table <using b_field_10_cde and sysdate>)
  from table_bJust a materialization of proposals by Sailaja Pasupuleti (insert into as select -> the fastest) and Daniel A. Morgan (plain SQL i.e. no SQL <-> PL/SQL context switching)
No need for deep elaboration as a transformation is a one time job to be done fast (we always try to be that way) and with minimal "collateral damage" (no-more-for-any-use functions scattered around for example, just a single script to be stored just in case ...)

  • Using the Insert statement in a Java program without hardcoding the data

    hello.
    this is james mcfadden. i have developed a program called Demo.java, which is used with another program called QueryTableModel.java (a program that allows data to be viewed in a JTable). The Demo.java program displays a menu, connects to a database, allows the user to add data into the database and allows the user to view data that is already in the database. I have a problem with the Demo.java program. I have hardcoded the Insert statement in it. How do you use the Insert statement to put data into a database without hardcoding the data?

  • Use Multiple Insert Statements in Prepared Statements

    Hi Friends
    i am stuck in a problem for which i need your help.i will brief you about the issue below.
    I am having Multiple Insert Statements which i need to execute to put the data in the database.i have a doubt about the use of the executeUpdate() function in the statement interface. sample code is as below.
    stmt = conn.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO Client ( clientPk, provincePk, countryPk, statusPk, branchPk, salutation, ) VALUES(PID, 2, '123123123', '123', '66', 1, 1 );");
    int n =stmt.executeUpdate();
    Now the problem is how do i insert multiple Insert statements using the conn.prepareStatement().should i do like
    stmt = conn.prepareStatement("")
    int n =stmt.executeUpdate();
    stmt = conn.prepareStatement("")
    int n =stmt.executeUpdate();
    stmt = conn.prepareStatement("")
    int n =stmt.executeUpdate(); ..................................
    should i use the same steps to execute each individual query and then use executeUpdate().
    Please let me know the correct procedure to be followed to execute these tasks.waiting for a positive reply from your side.
    Thanks & Regards
    Vikram K

    Hi
    Thanks a lot once agin for the reply.
    I think i have figured out the solution. I am using SQL statements in the Prepared statements(""). But now i have dropped the idea of using the prepared statement and decided to use the simple Statement instead.
    what i have done is as below.
    conn = ConnectionFactory.getInstance().getConnection();
    stmt = conn.createStatement();
    stmt.executeUpdate("INSERT INTO Client ( clientPk, provincePk, countryPk, statusPk, branchPk, salutation, heightMeasurementType, weightMeasurementType ) VALUES(PID, '1', '1', '0', '1', 'Mr', CONCAT('Jason ', PID), 'R', 'Mawdsley', '123', '66', 1, 1 );");
    stmt.executeUpdate("INSERT into Cp () Values ()");
    stmt.executeUpdate("INSERT into gp () Values ()");
    stmt.executeUpdate("INSERT into jk () Values ()");
    I think this makes sense to use the Statement and execute all the queries in one shot rather than using PS.
    thanks a lot for your help.
    Regards

  • Using 1million insert statement to create a table

    Dear Expert;
    Lets say someone sent you about 2 million insert statements and you want to use them to insert into a table or create a new table...How do you go about doing so...
    because I tried just highlighting all the insert statement and executing them, however that didnt work in pl/sql developer, it was crashing everytime I did so
    The other way might be to create a loop for them and inserting about 10,000 at a time...but is there a faster way to do it...
    All help is appreciated it..

    And let it run at night so that other users are not influenced that much by your session.
    You might want to add very few commits somewhere in between. However in case something breaks you then need to know which insert was still executed and which one one.

  • Operator in DECODE function in an INSERT statement

    Hello guys,
    consider I have some table EMP with only one column ID and want to insert new line like this:
    DECLARE
    x NUMBER := 1;
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO EMP2 (ID) VALUES (DECODE((x mod 2),0,0,1));
    END;I got and old project, which was running on Oracle 8 and tried to compile it on Oracle 11g.
    When trying to run the above statement I always get ORA-00907 - missing right parentheses. To me it seems that it is not allowed to use an operator inside the decode function but I am pretty sure this was working on old Oracle 8.
    Does anybody know in which version this stoped to work?
    Thanks for help

    DECLARE
    x NUMBER := 1;
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO EMP2 (ID) VALUES (DECODE(mod(x, 2),0,0,1));
    END;

  • How to get the value from a function using a select statement

    I have a function(user defined not built in) that returns multiple values(like an array). My question is how do i get those values in a select statement. when i tried to retrieve it,
    select pack.my_members from dual;
    i am getting an error
    ORA-00902: invalid datatype
    I am sure this must be a syntax error with the select statement
    The following is the function that give the array of data
    package pack
    package spec
    Type my_table is table of varchar2(25);
    function the_members
    return pack.my_table;
    pakcage body
    function the_members return pack.my_table
    Remarks: This function returns a table containing names of the
    members
    is
    tm pack.my_table:= pack.my_table('first member','second member','third member','fourth member');
    begin
    return tm;
    end the_members;

  • Using System::ErrorDescription in Insert statement

    Hello,
    I want to insert System::ErrorDescription to store the error in the customized log table. When I use the following statement, it does not insert anything. What am i doing wrong. Please advice.
    create table dbo.load_err(load_err_id integer(PK),load_err_Dtl,loadtime)
    INSERT INTO dbo.LOAD_ERR (LOAD_ERR_ID,
    LOAD_ERR_DTL,
    loadtime)
    VALUES (NEXT VALUE FOR dbo.LOAD_ERR_SEQ,
     @[System::ErrorDescription] ,
    getdate())
    I see the row inserted but nothing in the Load_ERR_DTL column.

    Where are you using the insert statement? The ErrorDescription  variable is only available inside OnError,OnWarning and OnInformation event handlers
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-IN/library/ms141788.aspx
    Also you need to use insert statement as below
    INSERT INTO dbo.LOAD_ERR (LOAD_ERR_ID,
    LOAD_ERR_DTL,
    loadtime)
    VALUES (NEXT VALUE FOR dbo.LOAD_ERR_SEQ,
    getdate())
    and map parameter0 to  @[System::ErrorDescription] in parameters tab
    another way is to set SQLSourceType
    as Variable and set a variable for the query with below expression as
    "INSERT INTO dbo.LOAD_ERR (LOAD_ERR_ID,
    LOAD_ERR_DTL,
    loadtime)
    VALUES (NEXT VALUE FOR dbo.LOAD_ERR_SEQ,'" +
    @[System::ErrorDescription] + "',
    getdate())"

    INSERT INTO dbo.LOAD_ERR (LOAD_ERR_ID,
    LOAD_ERR_DTL,
    loadtime)
    VALUES (NEXT VALUE FOR dbo.LOAD_ERR_SEQ,
    getdate())
    and map parameter0 to  @[System::ErrorDescription] in parameters tab
    another way is to set SQLSourceType
    as Variable and set a variable for the query with below expression as
    "INSERT INTO dbo.LOAD_ERR (LOAD_ERR_ID,
    LOAD_ERR_DTL,
    loadtime)
    VALUES (NEXT VALUE FOR dbo.LOAD_ERR_SEQ,'" +
    @[System::ErrorDescription] + "',
    getdate())"

  • Blank line in string value in insert statement causing problems

    I am generating an sql statement (insert) from an xml document using xsl transformation that is later run in an sqlplus session. The issue I am coming across is that one of the tags contains free-form text that can be any number of lines. Most strings are not causing a problem, but when there is a blank line in the string (two or more endline characters together) sqlplus seems to think this signifies the end of a statement. Here is an example that I hope will clarify what is being created.
    INSERT INTO MYTABLE VALUES('THIS WORKS', 0, NULL, ...);
    INSERT INTO MYTABLE VALUES('THIS
    ALSO
    WORKS', 0, NULL, ...);
    INSERT INTO MYTABLE VALUES('THIS
    DOES NOT
    WORK', 0, NULL, ...);
    Anyone seen this problem before or have a quick fix? All I can come up with is to pre-process the xml document (which, by the way, I have no control over the format as it comes from a client) to compress vertical whitespace. (This seems like overkill to me). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

    I don't know if this will work for u.
    If ur string has more than one end of lines and u don't need them, u can replace them by a single space using
    replace(string,chr(13)||chr(10),' ').
    If this does not solve ur problem then probably ur srting has a special charachter. To remove it
    take the ascii value of the special character and then see what is the corresponding chr value and then use replace function in ur insert statement where u find this special character.
    I too face same kind of problem and this worked for me.

  • How to use a select statement with chinese characters?

    I am currently developing a java servlet<using tomcat 4.x> which allows me to use select statement to retrieve results from the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database. I am using a simple form to get the parameter for querying. The main problem i'm facing is that there are chinese information in the SQL database, but i can't retrieve it through the sql statement with the chinese characters input<thru the form with the help of NJ STAR>in the WHERE condition. When i execute the statement, it returns me no results even though the rows are present in the database.
    Does anyone have the solution to using chinese words in the WHERE clause of the select statement to retrieve results with columns which contains chinese characters? Please help me. Thanks everyone. :)
    PS: when i cut and paste those characters in the sql database and paste onto java.. it is ??? in questionmarks.. but when i paste them into excel 2000.. its shown as chinese chars again..
    please heelppp~~

    Greetings,
    PS: when i cut and paste those characters in thesql
    database and paste onto java.. it is ??? in
    questionmarks.. but when i paste them into excelThis is why the SELECT is not returning any results.
    You need to set the character encoding set on your
    statement and parameters for the characters to be
    properly translated. Refer to the charsetName
    parameter in the String class constructor in your API
    docs and also to
    $JDK_DOCS/guide/intl/encoding.doc.html in your JDK
    documentation.
    2000.. its shown as chinese chars again..Because Office programs are performing the same kind
    of character translation with the appropriate MS APIs.
    please heelppp~~Regards,
    Tony "Vee Schade" Cookis it possible for you to show me some coding examples? i don't really understand what is to be done in order to set the char set and what does it really do.. tried reading up but still dun understand.. :(
    pardon my shallow knowledge of java..
    ok..
    The thing is when i used an insert statement with chinese characters of GBK format hardcoded into the java servlet and then i use the insert statement to insert the chars into the database, it cannot be seen as a chinese word when i off the NJStar. and then it can be searched out with my current form of servlet.. below is my coding of the servlet..
    note: i've set my html file to charset = GBK

  • Re: insert statement runs twice in place of once

    I am using a insert statement.The insert statement picks a variable
    from the form and inserts it into the database
    I have no loops in the page the code is :
    <cfif isdefined("Form.Category")>
    <cfquery name="InsertCat" datasource="ShoppingCart">
    Insert Into ShoppingMstCategory(Category)
    Values('#Form.Category#')
    </cfquery>
    </cfif>
    The insert runs twice on its own.
    Though if I use Query analyser to insert the statement only inserts once.
    am I missing something. I am using CF10.
    Here's the whole page.
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
    <title>cat update</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <cfif isdefined("Form.Category")>
    <cfquery name="InsertCat" datasource="ShoppingCart">
    Insert Into ShoppingMstCategory(Category)
    Values('#Form.Category#')
    </cfquery>
    <cfelse>
    <cfif isdefined("Form.CategoryEdit")>
    <cfquery datasource="Shoppingcart">
    UPDATE ShoppingMstCategory
    SET
    [Category] = '#Form.Category#'
    WHERE CategoryID = #Form.EditId#
    </cfquery>
    </cfif>
    </cfif>
    </body>
    </html>

    ColdFusion is behaving exactly as it should. When the form is submitted, the variables form.category and form.categoryEdit are both defined. In other words, isdefined("Form.Category") and isdefined("Form.CategoryEdit") are both true. Hence, the if-block as well as the else-block will run.

  • Is there any way to create a circular buffer using the INSERT ARRAY function?

    I saw the example using the REPLACE ARRAY function, but it uses too much CPU power on my laptop. I'm using it for a very sensitive application and saw that the INSERT ARRAY function used much less CPU power.
    I am also not wiring the index on the INSERT ARRAY function so that whatever is read from the buffer is added to the array.
    However, since it is not indexed, I don't know how to set the "write" index back to 0 when it reaches a certain sized array (ie 1000 elements). I was looking for an array property node, but couldn't figure out if one exists for the "current write index".
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    I will try to answer this question to my best understanding. I apologize if I interpreted the question wrong.
    You are using the "Insert Array" vi without wiring the index. By doing that, new elements will be added (appended) to the array.
    If you just want to know the current index to stop your acquisition when the array reach certain amount of elements, then you can use the "Array Size" vi to keep track of the size of the growing array. Remember that Array Size = last index + 1 because the index start at zero.
    A second option is that you may want to start over the array when it hits the maximum number of elements that you will allow. If that's the case, then you may want to re-initialize the array to a NULL state by stablishing a condition (for example, when the
    size of the array is 1000, re-initialize). I provided an example attached to this message showing how this can be accomplished. In the example, an 1D array grows in size using the "Insert Array" vi and inserting a random number. When the array reach 4 elements, it is re-initialized. You can expand this example by saving the array first to a file or some other holder before re-initializing the array. The example is in LabVIEW 6.
    Finally, if you want to replace the current values with new values, I think you do not have other choice but to use the "Replace Array" vi.
    Hope this can be of help.

  • Use NEXTVAL in an insert statement Part II

    db - 10g
    I am asking this question out of curiosity.
    I posted a question and recieved a successful answer at the following address on this forum;
    Use NEXTVAL in an insert statement
    The following insert statement uses a sequence to create an arbitrary number for each null record. The problem is, the sequence is firing regardless of the condition being true or false (but it is working in that it only inserts values when the condition is true). The result is the sequence appears to increment each time it loops through the cursor and so the first arbitrary number to be inserted is not 1001 but some other higher number.
    INSERT INTO psp_trees
    ( plot_id
    , tree_name
    , species_code)
    VALUES
    ( get_plot_id
    , c1.treenum
    , c1.species
    ) RETURNING tree_id INTO get_tree_id;   I have gotten around the issue by removing the sequence from the insert statement and placing it outside the cursor loop as an update statement.
          UPDATE psp_trees
             SET tree_name = to_char(tree_arbitrary_name_seq.nextval)
           WHERE tree_name IS NULL;Is there anyway to get the sequence to only fire in the insert statement when the condition is true.

  • Insert statement with loop function

    Hello all,
    I'm new with the loop function
    What need to do is to use a select statement with a condition
    This output needs to be inserted in a table
    The values of the condition are stored also in a table
    It will be something like this:
    BEGIN
      FOR i IN (select nrs from table1)  LOOP
        INSERT INTO table_out_loop
        SELECT * FROM bigtable_vw
        WHERE nr = i
      END LOOP ;
    END ;
    I cant use a direct insert_into function in this case so I need the plsql to 'look' for the values 1 by 1 from the table1
    Any help would be appreciated

    Can't you just:
        insert into table_out_loop
        select *
        from   bigtable_vw
        where  nr in (select nrs from table1);
    If not, then post a better example and/or rephrase the question...
