Future of Swing Developement in JDeveloper 11g  ?

The Swing part (in the preview) still is unfortunately far behind NetBeans (have a look at Version 6 M9 Matisse with JPA beans binding, not as good as ADF but...) and others, are there any plans to integrate Matisse and/or JSR 296 in the production release? Or is JSF the only technology on the gui layer that is pushed by Oracle in the future?
What's with javaFX (F3)??
best regards
Charly

Charly,
this first 11g technology preview reflects the bulk of the features in the UI clients areas that will be available in the initial 11.1.1.0.0 release when it goes production. I agree that the JDK 6.0 GroupLayout layout manager made popular by NetBean's Project "Matisse" GUI builder is a very interesting one from a developer productivity point of view -- it dupliates some of the productive layout "guides" ideas I believe first seen in the Visual Studio 2005 Windows Forms designer. We have our eye on supporting it in a subsequent 11g release. However, that support unfortunately won't make the initial production release of 11g. We also support the JSR 296 and are following it for including support in a future release, too. Regarding JavaFX (F3), just as you are this week, we're getting our first real look at what it means. I assume if it becomes a popular option it will be something to support for future JDev releases as well. We have significant 2/3-tier Swing data binding features that should fit in nicely with JavaFX, but it's honestly too early to say what our plans are there.
Of course we continue full support of our existing ADF Swing features (including the productive JGoodies FormLayout support we introduced in 10.1.3). We've added a few new interesting ADF Swing components as noted in the 11g "New Features" document, too, as well as rewritten the critically important ADF Business Components Browser testing tool using ADF Swing during this release as a showcase and testbed of ADF Swing functionality.
While from the new features list you can see we've improved features in many major feature area, in the "UI Clients" area much of the UI-related features in this initial 11g release are out of necessity centered around the significant declarative application development requirements put to us by our Oracle Fusion Applications teams (who are building front-ends using JSF Rich Client). We have thousands of internal apps developers, many of whom have already begun using early builds of our 11g technology platform for development of their next generation of Oracle Fusion Applications.
In this initial 11g release cycle, given these multitudinous requirements presented to us by our combined Oracle, Peoplesoft, Siebel, and JDEdwards teams, there was reduced bandwidth available for making significant enhancements to our other kinds of UI clients that we continue to support like Struts, ADF Swing, or Mobile clients.
This definitely does not mean there are not enhancements queued up, waiting to be implemented in future releases in these areas. Only that the initial 11g release doesn't have an "explosion" of new features in those areas.

  • Step by Step tutorial on Swing development using JDeveloper 11g

    I am completely newbie on Jdeveloper and I am looking for a Step by Step tutorial on how to build a desktop database application using 11g version. I want to use the EJB3, Data binding and JPA and other new technology.
    Could you please point me to the right direction. I have googled and most info I have seen are on web apps.
    Greatly appreciated your assistance.

    Hi,
    ADF Swing is not yet ready for prime time in JDeveloper 11 technology preview. I suggest to have a look at 10.1.3.1 of JDeveloper and finish the following tutorial
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe1013jdev/10131/adf%20swing/master_detail_page_adfswing_bc.htm

    Ps.: You can also use 10.1.3.2 of JDeveloper

    Hi Shay,
    Thanks for your response.
    The following is what I did:
    1. connect JavaDB on my C drive by using generic jdbc
    2. create EO, VO and AM manually based on one JavaDB table (Please note: When I use the BC4J wizard, I can only create VO, the EO is empty)
    3. run BC4J tester to insert and update data
    4. created an ADF Swing application by dragging the EMPview from data control to the editor
    5. save the project and run java class
    6. create the deployment profile by following your instruction,
    and select all libraries from the Contributors list when I create the file groups
    7. deploy the jar file without any error
    8. run the jar file and get the following error:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0071602380/wwwavromroyfa-20

    I studied related threads.
    WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR GETTING THIS BUG FORMALLY IDENTIFIED
    AND RESOLVED ?
    I searched this forum for " Handbook Associations" this year and found
    there is a related thread...
    " Associations and View Links missing in JDeveloper 11.1.1.3 and 11.1.1.4 "
    MARCH 2010
    Associations and View Links missing in JDeveloper 11.1.1.3 and 11.1.1.4
    ( status = unanswered )
    Then I searched this forum for " Handbook Associations" LAST YEAR and found
    there is a related thread...
    " Problem creating associations "
    JANUARY 2010

    ( status = unanswered )
    " NO Links or Associations created with the "Business Components From Tables "
    SEPTEMBER 2009...

    ( status = answered ) but they are using JDeveloper 11.1.1.1.0
    "I can't believe it, but I figured out what it is.
    At step 6, you said "Defined a new connection for TEST in the wizard".
    So, I've stopped using an IDE Connection, and I've defined a new one
    for my specific project.
    And it worked.
    Now I have all the links and associations in place. "
    "Perhaps what you really have is an application connection pointing to some wrong version of the test schema? "
    " I am also getting that issue with the Fusion Order Demo schema.
    If I try to create ADF BC for a master detail relation (Orders and OrderItems) from
    a connection previously defined at the IDE level, it does not import the foreign key and the association.
    If I create the connection during the Create ADF BC wizard then everything comes in fine ".
    " Just to report that when I created second connection during the wizard, associations were picked up.
    Note that in previous run, it did not pick up PKs (it used ROWID instead), in addition to associations.
    I think that this should be a bug. "
    " I spent hours and hours trying to figure out why no View Links nor Associations were appearing.
    Finally I found your clue: create a new JDBC connection from inside the Wizard.
    This is a really bad bug - every newbie will encounter it as they follow the HR or the FOD tutorials !
    Many thanks for taking the time to publish your clue. Much appreciated. "
    So, this forum thread identified and reproduced the issue and
    then failed to create a bug report.
    It seems this bug was never resolved, yet the thread's status was changed to "answered".
    Is the bug with the Handbook / book (or wwww.tuhra.com erratta) for failing to tell us to delete
    the database connection and (re)create a new database connection ?
    Or is the bug with JDeveloper JDBC Connections ?
    Of course I will try to workaround the problem as desribed above and I am
    likely to proceed.
    However, for bugs to be left open for 19 MONTHS is really really bad for all of us.

  • Graphical interface improvements on JDeveloper 11g

    Congratulations you really improved the design interface
    I finally could drag an jsf adf item to anothre place,
    But I can't move the prompt of that item so easily.
    I don't know if you checked yahoo geocities free web designer, this is very interesting because you can put items in any place, I always thought jdeveloper interface would be so easy as oracle developer.
    Please don't forget to continue improving we'll have to start programming in 11g and we have very high standards on web output.
    Thank you, we appreciate your efforts.

    Thank you Stom and Shay
    1. The example I gave to putting the items anywhere (when I talk about the editor yahoo geocities has) was thinking in swing, and obviously there will be the limitation on the frame of the database and common sense limitations, the point is you could drag the item and position easily, not the posibility to put anywhere without any constraint :).
    2: About your interest in feedback, let me tellyou we were really impressed with the business logic jdeveloper has, but we were extremely sad after looking at the limitations in design we did several posts, and we were not talking about magical new features, else a similar facility like macromedia dreamweaver has (I think you did a big improvement and maybe you are better in some features than macromedia is now on JDeevloper 11g).
    Briefly is the posibility to give a really good design to a page using jsf adf components, we have high standard on your application display.
    To start the development on JDeveloper adf jsf (we are not planning to use swing) our wish is the posibility to:
    1: Easily position items (without going to code), using a table for example, as it's usually done, I think this is solved with the drag and drop of items.
    2. To easily position the prompt of all items (list items, text items, etc.), in relation to their items (like oracle developer has)
    3. Your css style sheets are very limited, because jdeveloper don't accept all the css properties, if jdeveloper could interpret all them please.
    4. The posibility to apply by item a css class, this idea comes from Oracle Developer, where you create several classes, and when you click the right button on a item, you see all the classes for that type of object, for example a button or a text item, and then you select the class and it apply to the item.
    5. The posibility to easily give a different format to every row, if possible visualy, why? because we get our reports from function tables, there is a column saying the format of the row, for example title, detail, total, etc. We did it on php.
    6. The ability to use properties of colspan and rowspan in an adf database tables, for data display.
    7. The posibility to give relative and absolute positioning in all your components using dips or layers.
    8. We understand is not possible to did it all visually, and there will be the need to modify the code from time to time, but don't loose the correct visual position representation of that.
    Thank you :)

    To anyone else encountering this:
    I would just like to report, that Oracle Development has managed to reproduce this problem from scratch by following a similar upgrade path 10.1.3.0->10.1.3.4->11.1.1.0. The problem is NOT OS-related, but related to migrating the user settings from 10.1.3.3. So Jan you were right about that. Credits go to you :)
    The only workaround for me has so far been to take a backup of my old SYSTEM directory causing the problem, and I have been forced to carefully recreate all my settings to get around this problem, since I already removed my old 10.1.3.3 installation, assuming the migration went OK - which it didn't... So, I will keep my old backup, in the hope that Development finds a fix to this issue, so I can go back to the settings I used to have, even though I THINK I have recreated them all for 11g - not completely sure though... time will tell.
    Until then, I will track the bug, that Didier has logged for me, which he mentioned in his post.

    Jacob

    Hi,
    we do have plans for supporting NetBeans' Matisse in a future version of JDeveloper. Until then JDeveloper expects the layout definition to be part of the jbinit() method. However, adding the required libraries to the JDeveloper project you should be able to at least use the code editor for further developing the project

  • JDeveloper 11g and Java 6

    Hi,
    is there any problem when running on java 6 (or 6u1). Install instruction is only for java 5.
    Would java 6 be supported?
    Thanks,
    Uros.

    Just attempted to use TP2 with J6 ... Are you aware that this issue still exists in the TP2 release. It makes the whole release unusable when it comes to any swing development.... I think the wording "Exception" is an understatement in this case! It tells you where swing stands compared to JSF. Some of us use the product for the "real world" need of both.
    The one known issue related to JDK 6.0 and the 11g Tech Preview of which I am aware is documented in the release notes addendum here:
    "Exception using the Swing Visual Designer and Property Inspector running JDeveloper 11g under JDK 1.6.0"
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/htdocs/11tp/11gtechpreviewaddendum.html#ide1

  • Problem with tutorial; "Build a Web Application with JDeveloper 11g Using "

    I've got a rather new installation of Vista Business x64 on my developer rig, and last week I installed the new JDeveloper 11g version. The installation was all-inclusive, no customization on my end.
    In addition I've got a test installation of an Oracle DB 11gR1 on an available server here.
    To familiarize myself with the new JDeveloper I decided to spend some time with the JDeveloper 11g tutorials found here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe11jdev/11/index.html.
    I've started twice on the second tutorial, "Build a Web Application with JDeveloper 11g Using EJB, JPA, and JavaServer Faces", and find myself repeatedly stuck at step 19 in section "Creating the Data Model and Testing it".
    It seems impossible to deploy the application to the default application server. The server starts fine on its own, I can access it via the admin console on port 7001 and it looks good. However, when I try to run the HRFacadeBean funny things are happening, symptomized by the following error messages seen in the IDE log-area:
    The "Messages" pane displays:
    "Compiling...

    I'm not that familiar with these things but it seems to me that there is an issue with port numbers here. The application seems to expect a app.server service at port 7101, but does'nt find one.
    Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be appreciated?

    Jupp,
    It fails in a similar way.
    What I did was; create a simle 'Hello World' html file, saving it with the jsp extension. In Jdev11g i made a new application and an emtpy project, then loaded the jsp file and made it the default run-target. This compiles nicely.
    When running the project it first attempts to start the WebLogicServer (WLS). After a few minutes it is started as seen in the "Running: DefaultServer" pane:

    So, I try to run the project again, and this time the following is shown in the "Messages" pane:
    Compiling...
    Context: MakeProjectAndDependenciesCommand application=TestAppJsp.jws project=TestProjJsp.jpr
    [7:26:39 PM] Successful compilation: 0 errors, 0 warnings.
    [Application TestAppJsp is bound to Server Instance DefaultServer]
    [Starting Server Instance DefaultServer]
    #### Server Instance DefaultServer could not be started: Server Instance was terminated.
    The "Running: DefaultServer" now comes up with:
    C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\base_domain\bin\startWebLogic.cmd
    [waiting for the server to complete its initialization...]
    [Server Instance DefaultServer is shutting down.  All applications currently running will be terminated and undeployed.]
    Process exited.
    The WLS is still running though as I can still access its adm console.
    To me it seems that it is attempting to start a separate instance of the WLS for each run attempt, but then I could be wrong.....:(
    Later I'll try to change the default WLS port from 7001 to 7101 as suggested in another port here.
    I must admit that I'm a bit surprised that the JDev11g doesn't work fine at this very simple level when performing a default install.

  • JDeveloper 11g: How to get all the rows of a database table from applicatio

    Hello all!
    I'm developing a application with JDeveloper 11g, like subject show.
    So, I'm suppose to use some data which are in database table.
    So, I had the View Object where I want take data, to the datamodel.
    And after this, I use this next line in my serviceClass.java:
    public String method(){
            String truc = null;
            getViewName().setRangeSize(-1);
            getViewName().setRangeStart(0);
            getViewName().executeQuery();
    //I do my treatment here
    return truc
    }When the application run, it stop just before the line "getViewName().setRangeSize(-1);"
    So, I think it is the locking point.
    Someone can help me.
    Thank's
    Nystan

    Hi,
    1. You work with a application module class and not in a plain old java object? So you create a application module or only a view object?
    2. If you work with a application module class. Can you switch on a bit of logging? To set the system debug output property, open the Run/Debug/Profile page in the Project Properties dialog for your data model project. Click Edit to edit the chosen run configuration, and add following string to the Java Options field in the page.
    -Djbo.debugoutput=console -Djbo.adflogger.level=FINE
    maybe you can see the error.

  • Error in running a simple JSF app developed in Jdeveloper over weblogic

    I have a developed a simple JSF application using Jdeveloper 11g.
    To this application i have added a webservice proxy which generates the proxy client which communicates with the peoplesoft webservice.
    when i run the standalone proxy class, it is able to connect to the webservice and get the required data.
    But as i deploy the whole JSF application (where the managed bean calls a method in the client) in Integrated weblogic server, i get an XMLStreamReaderException.
    To debug this issue i deployed the war file in apache-tomcat6.0.26 with all the reqquired libraries in the Lib folder, it actually worked , my jsf application was able to get the data from the webservice.
    This makes me think that there is some problem in the way Jdeveloper is packaging the application.I have added all the lib & jar through "libraries &classpath" setting on project properties.But i am sure there is some problem in this process.
    I just need some help in understanding how to package an application,how to make sure all lib & jar are included in the war file??
    Any help is appreciated.
    The error i get in the weblogic is

    HI
    First of all, how do you concluded that you're dealing with packaging problem?? It seems problem is in response from web service. The toolkit you have is not able to parse the soap response. Tomcat solves problem probably because of the different jars he has for web service client.
    In either way, i have personally experienced problems with JD packaging (11g). The WAR created by JD was working well in embedded WLS shipped with JD, but when deployed to production WLS 10.3.1, i got a "IO exception; premature end of file". The only solution was to create a WAR by ant.
    Here is ANT sample script for building java classes, packaging into war, deploying to WLS (for this last one, you need to reference external jar):
    <target name="build">
    <!-- compile -->
    <javac debug="true" debuglevel="${debuglevel}" source="${source_version}" target="${target_version}" destdir="${output.dir}">
    <src path="${src.location}"/>
    </javac>
    </target>
         <target name="war" depends="build">
    <delete file="${target_war_file}"/>
    <war destfile="${target_war_file}" webxml="src/WEB-INF/web.xml" manifest="/src/META-INF/MANIFEST.MF" update="true">
    <classes dir="${output.dir}"/>
    <lib dir="${build_libs.location}">
    <include name="**/*.jar"/>
    </lib>
    <!-- include important jsf files files -->
    <zipfileset dir="${path.to.conf.folder}" prefix="WEB-INF">
    <include name="adfc-config.xml"/>
    <include name="trinidad-config.xml"/>
    <include name="web.xml"/>
    <include name="weblogic.xml"/>
    </zipfileset>
    </war>
    </target>
         <taskdef name="wldeploy" classname="weblogic.ant.taskdefs.management.WLDeploy">
    <classpath>
    <pathelement location="c:/oracle/wlserver_10.3/server/lib/weblogic.jar"/>
    </classpath>
    </taskdef>
    <target name="deploy">
    <wldeploy action="deploy" verbose="true" upload="true" remote="true" debug="true" name="${wls.app.name}" user="${wls.user}" password="${wls.password}" adminurl="${wls.admin.url}"
    targets="${wls.targets}" securitymodel="CustomRoles" source="${target_war_file}" nostage="false"/>
    </target>
    <target name="undeploy">
    <wldeploy action="undeploy" verbose="true" name="${wls.app.name}" user="${wls.user}" password="${wls.password}" adminurl="${wls.admin.url}" targets="${wls.targets}" failonerror="false"/>
    </target>
