G5 Switches to Auto Speed with Installation Disk and Overheats

My G5 overheats when set to "Automatic" mode in the Energy Saver window of System Preferences. I must leave it set on "Reduced" speed. However, when I startup from the installation disk it sets the speed at Automatic and I cannot complete tasks like "repair permissions" and make an image of my boot drive before the fans go turbo and the processor (I presume) overheats.
How can I set energy saver to "reduced" when booting up with the installation disk or, how can I solve the overheat problem ( Cleaning dust out of the inside has no effect on the overheating/driving problem. I keep it very clean.) Could a bad video card cause this?

Can you please provide details on the exact model?
For a start, the PRAM battery is likely dead.  PRAM tells the computer which drive to start with, other basic information.  Still, you can usually get the computer to start, though bad PRAM is unpredictable and could be stopping that.
Some computer models use software to control cooling fans.  If there's no software commands they automatically go into high speed to prevent overheating.  Your software obviously isn't loading, so runaway fans.

  • Real problem with installer disk

I had my laptop bag stolen so I went to install my Logic Studio on my macbook pro but the disk was in my case with my logic pro 7 dongle. My Logic 8 was an upgrade. I got a new dongle from apple yesterday but apple tech was useless in trying to find out weather I could get a replacement Installer disk. I have all the Jam pack and audio content disks, my serial my suport id. Anyone know of a download (not a torrent or anything like that) or can I migrate the package from my G5.
    Getting desperate.......

Just an idea can I install it from my g5 or clone or migrate the .pkg........
Not sure if you can migrate/clone the .pkg ,try it....I don't know ....but I'd suggest you call Apple again,if they send you an XSkey why not sending you a replacement disc for the one you're missing.

  • Cannot reboot Mac OS X even with installation disk

    Hi,
After I struggled with the OpenDirectory setup - making the system
as standalone OpenDirectory server, I reboot my MacPro expecting
better behavior (I have FTP problem which I don't understand).
Then the machine never boots up - even with Tiger Installation
    Disk in the DVD slot.
I'm new to Mac Server operation/management - any idea how to
    recover it ?
    Thanks for your help !

  • Macbook Pro didn't come with Installation disk

Hello. My 13inch Macbook pro just arrived today. It's Mac OS X Lion 10.7. After powering it up my first order of buisness was to install windows 7 through bootcamp. Then I made the discovery that this Macbook didn't come with an installation disk which I find damned odd. I checked the box and the little notebook holders, and there's no disk. This thing isn't even a day out of the box, so should I call apple and see if they'll send me one or is there something I'm missing?

    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu. Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow instructions in the dialog window that will appear.

  • Does 2013 iMac come with installation disk

I bought second hand iMac from Ebay but got no installation disk.
    Should it have one?
    Came complete in original packaging.

If you require an fresh install of Mac OS X....Start up your mac while holding down CMD + R.
This will download the OS from Apple for free.
P.S it will only download the OS X version that came with your iMac. You can then upgrade it to Yosemite for free.

  • I just recently bought my friend's iMac 10,1 21.5in with all of his documents in it He lost his installer disks and it has OS X Snow Leopard. How can I restore it to factory settings? Or can I buy OS X Lion online and restore it to factory settings?

    ?

Sooner or later, you will need to have those install disks, so you or your friend need to call Apple, give them the serial number of the machine and ask for replacement disks which should be sent out for a nominal fee. Other than that, you could also buy Snow Leopard retail disk at various resellers or Apple store online for $29.
You will need that disk because: if you want to update to Lion and you purchase it at the app store, the license for it is not transferable, so if you ever sell that Mac, you are required to uninstall Lion and reinstall the original system (which you will need the disks for). The disks also include diagnostic/repair software.
So, it's best to have the disks; and, if you do purchase and install Lion, make sure you make a complete backup - bootable clone or Time Machine just in case.

  • HT4718 I tried merging the empty space on my Macbook Pro Hard disk but it says that there is a problem with my disk and i need to reformat it. What should i do to keep my applications and software + files?

    Hi All,
I was given a macbook pro with parallel windows, and later windows was remove but hard disk space is greyed out and could not be merge and when i run a 'verify disk' it told me to reformat my OS. The nearest service centre is real far away from me and i hope to solve this on my own. I need to keep my applications and files, how do i do so? As some of these applications was given by my company. I need help on keeping my files and reformating.
    Thanks in advance.

Get an external drive and make a clone of your internal, erase the internal, set it for 1 partition (OSX Journaled) and restore the clone.

    DUPLICATE!

  • Trouble with LaCie disk and time machine

    HI everyone,
I've been having trouble with using time machine to back-up to my 1 TB LaCie drive (purchased 5/12, unfornuately I was dumb and didn't register the drive and no longer have the box with the serial number and there is no serial number on my drive. The only problem I had up until the end of August was that every so often the LaCie drive (using my FW 800 port) would unmount after waking up from sleep.
The end of August the drive unmounted for no reason while I was on the computer doing a task. Could not get the LaCie drive remounted (rebooting, etc. etc.) To make a long story short, ended up calling apple care who took me through resetting my SMC and PRAM to no avail. Was booted to higher level of support who walked me through trying to repair my drive using the disk utiltiy. When that didn't work, she walked me through erasing and reformatting the LaCie drive and starting a new time machine back-up. Every thing ok until about ten days ago.
Last week, when I woke my iMac up from sleep, I got an error saying that the disk was not ejected properly and I could not mount the drive. Restarting did nothing, the disk did not  mount. Shutting down and rebooting seemed to solve the problem and the disk was mounted. Every so often I've had the problem with the disk unmounting after waking up from sleep before. So, I changed my energy sleep preferences. At the end of the day when I am done, I'd unmount the LaCie drive before putting the Mac to sleep using the apple menu.
Today I came in to start my day, plugged the drive in and it would not mount. Tried rebooting nothing. Went into the disk utility, at first the LaCie drive passed the disk verify (6:26:25 and 6:26:38). Then I went into repair disk on the indented drive at 6:27:13, I wasn't sure what it is was doing, thinking that it had hung, I stopped the repair at 6:27:24. Exited disk utility, and the LaCie drive mounted. But I was getting a read only error when I tried to back-up using time machine. So, I went back into disk utility at 6:27:35, when I verified the disk (indented disk), I got an error saying the disk need to be repaired. After several minutes the disk could not be repaired. So, I erased and reformatted the drive. Ran a time machine back-up and it seemed to back-up everything on my hard drive. Just ran another verify disk and it passed.
Is the drive failing? Have some other back-ups of my documents, my address book, iCal and am going to make a backup of some of my pref files and important e-mail files and am going to do some more back-ups after I am done.
Have reached out to the women at apple care whom I talked to last August, but don't expect to hear back from her for at least 24 hours.
Here is my disk utility log

I just got a call back from the upper level support person at apple care who had been advising me on my trouble with time machine and my LaCie 1 TB FWD. I had sent her much of the same verbiage as I posted here. As some of you have probably figured out, the verdict is that the drive is probably failing. She says this because I have had to do two erase and reformats. She thought that the intermitant problem that I have had with the drive unmounting when my iMac wakes from sleep could be related to the drive failing.
In the meantime I have a secondary back-up (not using time machine) and the LaCie  1 TB FWD is working for the moment.
Thanks to all who read all my verbiage.
And in the meantime, I've learned something. I marked this question as solved. But I'm open to other things to try.

  • Very slow transfer speeds with Airport Extreme and MacBook

I have been using a new Airport Extreme without problem at my home for the past six weeks. The speed and range was excellent with both my MacBook Pro and the MacBook which I purchased a few weeks ago. I came out to Greece with both laptops and a new AP Extreme box for my home network here. After set up I noticed that internet access was lethargic on the MacBook and file transfer between the two computers was extremely slow. The problem seems to be with the new MacBook (although it was working well in London). I've done some speed tests and the internet download speed is only 48 kpbs! I also notice that the range is very poor--in the room next to the router I am down to five bars. If I connect to the AP Extreme with cable I get the full 1Mbps I would normally expect here in Athens (ADSL nominal 2Mbps). The MacBook Pro has no problems with wireless access speeds or range, so I am assuming this has to be a problem with the AP extreme card in the MacBook. Is there anything I have overlooked? Perhaps something to do with setting up the new AP Extreme here in Athens?

By process of elimination I realised that the only cause of the sudden slowness must be software that I had installed recently. The only software I had added was a wifi utility to detect available networks--open or protected. Unlikely as it sounds, quitting the utility (which I had set to load on startup) made a dramatic improvement in performance.

  • Problem with Airport Disk and Leopard

I connected an external drive (1tb MyBook) to my Airport Extreme base station. The transfer rate was a bit slow but otherwise the disk was working fine, shared between a MacBook Pro and a PC. Then I updated my system from 10.5.0 to 10.5.3 and haven't been able to access the disk since. The drive shows up in the left pane of the finder window but when I try to access it the wireless network goes down. I've restarted both the disk and the base station, checked for software updates, gone through the settings on the Airport Utility, all to no avail. Can't access the disk from the PC any more either.
In the previous system there was an Airport Disk utility (it had a little icon on the finder menu bar), but I can't find this in the new system version. Help!??

Since you are able to get it to run without an airport card, I would backup your data and erase and install. If after an erase and install without adding back any peripherals, airport doesn't work as expected, and you apply all the airport software updates, then I'd say the airport card is faulty. See my backup FAQ*:

  • PSC 1401 installation disk and installation download tries to install on my CD Drive

I am trying to install my PSC 1401 on my system which uses Windows XP Professional.  When using the Installation CD that came with the printer I get the following message:
    Out of disk space.
We found a previous version of the software. To work properly with your other HP products, this software must be installed to the same location.
There is not enough space on this drive to install the software for your HP All-In-One Series.
Please cancel this install and free up space on the E:\ drive by deleting files or uninstalling other programs.
After freeing up the necessary space restart this installation by opening and closing the CD-Rom drive where your HP CD is located.
I get the same message when using a download installation from the HP site.
The problem is that my E:\ drive is my CD-Rom drive.
Any idea why these two installation methods keep trying to load onto this drive rather than my C:\ drive?

Apparently that doesn't work. Install directly from the original media.
    Cheers
