Gencon causes erratic performance on SMP linux server

-----Problems:
1. Erratic performance.
2. GC logs show only half of the GC pause times.
-----Symptoms:
Long pause(s) in application response time. GC log output shows GC collections lasting about half the duration of the application pause. Our testing resulted in pauses which lasted up to 90 seconds during which few or no transactions were processed by the workload.
-----Cause:
Gencon apparently does not work well on an MP Linux system
-----Workaround:
Use the parallel gc option on MP systems.

David,
Thank you for your response. I believe the pauses are GC related, though.
The application is multithreaded and can be run in multiple instances as well. This behavior effects one entire process. That is, all threads in one process stop producing for several seconds (up to 90 as I mentioned in my original post). Other instances of the application on the same server continue to function normally.
If the GC option is changed to parallel then this pause behavior does not occur. Changing the GC option was made in lab conditions and was the only change made. Reverting to gencon, of course, reliably reproduces the problem.
Additionally the timing of the longest GC pause in the GC log correlates with the timing of the transactional drop in the application's log. Again, as I mentioned in the first post, the time of the GC pause is half of the time of the unresponsive period in the application. Therefore, even if the application is causing half of the delay, a 45 second GC pause for a 1.5 GB heap is cause for review.
Thank you again for your attention to this matter,
Dan

As we can see all the errors contained “echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.” and “blocked for more than 120 seconds” somewhere.
    Explanation
By default Linux uses up to 40% of the available memory for file system caching. After this mark has been reached the file system flushes all outstanding data to disk causing all following IOs going synchronous. For flushing out this data to disk this there is a time limit of 120 seconds by default. In the case here the IO subsystem is not fast enough to flush the data within 120 seconds. As IO subsystem responds slowly and more requests are served, System Memory gets filled up resulting in the above error.
    Solution
Increasing the vm.dirty_background_ratio by 5% and vm.dirty_ratio to 10, would give some buffer for the server.
    Change vm.dirty_ratio and vm.dirty_backgroud_ratio
    [root@localhost mercury]# sysctl -w vm.dirty_ratio=10
    vm.dirty_ratio=10
    [root@localhost mercury]# sysctl -w vm.dirty_background_ratio=5
    vm.dirty_background_ratio=5
Commit Change by running the below command:
    [root@localhost mercury]# sysctl -p
The above command should fix the kernel panic errors. However, a reboot would reset these changes.
So, we could monitor the server for a week or so and after confirming there are no more errors in the messages log, we could make this change permanent by doing the following:
    [root@localhost mercury]# vi /etc/sysctl.conf
ADD 2 lines at the bottom
    vm.dirty_background_ratio = 5
    vm.dirty_ratio = 10
Save and exit by hitting the escape key + wq!
    [root@localhost mercury]# reboot
    More Explanation:
vm.dirty_background_ratio is the percentage of system memory that can be filled with “dirty” pages — memory pages that still need to be written to disk — before the pdflush/flush/kdmflush background processes kick in to write it to disk. My example is 5%, so if my virtual server has 32 GB of memory that’s 1.6 GB of data that can be sitting in RAM before something is done.
vm.dirty_ratio is the absolute maximum amount of system memory that can be filled with dirty pages before everything must get committed to disk. When the system gets to this point all new I/O blocks until dirty pages have been written to disk. This is often the source of long I/O pauses, but is a safeguard against too much data being cached unsafely in memory.

    Hi,
Please apply the following correction manually.
    1. Go to transaction ST03N
    2. Change user from 'Administrator' to 'Expert Mode'.
    3. Go to Collector and performance analysis -> Performance database
       -> Monitoring database -> Contents
    4. Search where further info contains the string "h/2"
    like the following monikeys:
      - 'days  h/2'
      - 'weeks  h/2'
      - 'months  h/2'
    5. Double click on each, so that they become red and show ** delete
    6. Finally SAVE
This will remove the corresponding database related history up to the deletion date. It will accumulate anew afterwards.
How can I identify the monikey that has to be deleted?
When you load the text of the dump and then jump off to the break point of the debugger you may find the error break point look like:
"IMPORT HIST2 FROM DATABASE MONI(DB) ID MONIKEY".
To find the right monikey entry causing the dump you can search for the word 'MONIKEY' within the text of the dump. This can be 'days  h/3' or
    'tabgrowth  2'...
You can then go back to the procedure above and search where further info contains the monikey that you found in the text of the dump.

I want to upgrade my OS from official repository on Primary and Standby Servers. And I have a question:
Will I have a problem with my RDBMS after upgrade OS (e.g. statuses in dba_registry will become INVALID)?

    It's Ok.
    Now I have:
    $ cat /etc/issue
    Oracle Linux Server release 6.4
    No any problem.

  • Need clear steps for doing performance tuning on SQL Server 2008 R2 (DB Engine, Reporting Services and Integration Services)

We have to inverstigate about a reporting solution where things are getting slow (may be material, database design, network matters).
I have red a lot in MSDN and some books about performance tuning on SQL Server 2008 R2 (or other) but frankly, I feel a little lost in all that stuff
I'am looking for practical steps in order to do the tuning. Someone had like a recipe for that : a success story...
My (brain storm) Methodology should follow these steps:
Resource bottlenecks: CPU, memory, and I/O bottlenecks
     tempdb bottlenecks
A slow-running user query : Missing indexes, statistics,...
Use performance counters : there are many, can one give us the list of the most important
how to do fine tuning about SQL Server configuration
    SSRS, SSIS configuration ?
    And do the recommandations.
    Thanks

    Hello,
There is no clear defined step which can be categorized as step by step to performance tuning.Your first goal is to find out cause or drill down to factor causing slowness of SQL server it can be poorly written query ,missing indexes, outdated stats.RAM crunch
CPU crunch so on and so forth.
I generally refer to below doc for SQL server tuning
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd672789(v=sql.100).aspx
For SSIS tuning i refer below doc.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/library/Cc966529#ECAA
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms137622(v=sql.105).aspx
When I face issue i generally look at wait stats ,wait stats give you idea about on what resource query was waiting.

We are planning and upgrade of Planning 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.2.2 and I understand that it is basically a install then migration. We would like to maintain our current linux servers for the next version. Is there a way we can have 2 different version of Essbase 11.1.2 and 11.1.1.3 running out of 2 separate homes on 1 Linux server. Then perform the migration and clean up the other one?
If so has anyone done it and what are the pitfalls I may run into?
    thanx

The only problem is if you try to run both at the same time you're going to have port conflicts unless you change the default ports on the 11.1.2.2 installation.

  • Linux Server Sizing

Is there any documentation on server sizing? I have a client/server application that will have between 100 and 200 users (75-100 concurrent), and would like to go to a Linux platform. The app is currently running on a large HP server with other apps on it, but I want this to be dedicated on the Linux machine. I contacted Oracle and they were no help.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Is there any documentation on server sizing?Andy Rivenes has published a nice test script to perform a Logical I/O test rate. Because physical I/O is disk/network intensive and logical I/O (a consistent get from the data buffer cache) is CPU-intensive, this script is useful for calculating the workload capacity of Oracle servers with large buffer caches (i.e. a 64-bit Oracle server).
    http://www.appsdba.com/sql/cpu_test.sql
This script computes logical I/O per second for the given processor(s), and assuming that logical I/O is CPU-centric, this script will give a high-water-mark (HWM) for buffered I/O throughput, a critical metric for Oracle server capacity planning.
As to documentation, there are no formulas in text form that I know of, but there are capacity planning spreadsheets for sale that are used for Oracle Linux server sizing:

  • Can't enable performance pack on Linux

I am trying to enable the performance pack on Linux 7.1 with
WebLogic Server 5.1 sp 12, but see the following in the log
    when I start the server:
Unable to load performance pack, using Java I/O.
I have tried setting the java.library.path to point to the linux
.so folders (per BEA documentation), but still does not seem to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If memory serves, on Windows it's $PATH.
On Solaris and Linux, it's $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    On HP-UX, it's $SHLIB_PATH

  • Moving from 10gR2 Db on Unix (Tru64) to a new Linux server (10gR2)

    Hi,
We are planning on moving our oracle 10gR2 Db on Unix (Tru64) to a new Linux server (same database 10gR2). Interested in discussing the easiest way for a newbie to get the data over to the new box. We currently perform a 'COLD" backup and have no transaction logging. The database is a data warehouse so stopping the database and backing up the files is not a issue. The database size is 500GB.
The Oracle ADDM on our current box is showing "individual database segments responsible for significant user I/O". There is a tablespace with about 30 separate data files that need to be "reorganized"!
Should we perform the reorganize before the migration or after on the new faster box?
What is the easiest way to do this for a newbie? Thanks.

Since your source and target platform all little ENDIAN format. Cold copy from OS level is fastest and easiest way.
If you plan to reorg the tablespace along the way, you have to do export/import, use data pump since you are on 10g.

  • Migrating 10grel2 Application server from windows to linux server

    Hi Friends,
Can you please share your experience or steps need to perform for migration o oracle 10grel2 Application server which runs on windows to linux server.
    Best regards,
    Rafi.

    Hi Rafi,
There is no direct way to migrate. You need to install the fresh instance on Linux, and migrate the data across e.g. OID, SSO, Portal, Config etc.

  • BPC 7.5 AfterRange Causes Extreme Performance Issue

In a report when I apply second AfterRange the run time goes from under 2 minutes to 15 minutes. I know there are performance penalties for using Before/AfterRange but I have never seen the discrepancy to this proportion.
Report contains 1 Column (Time) and 4 Rows in Expansion. The first range which causes no issues for Cost Centers is defined Q73:V74, the range which causes the performance issue and applies for each Employee is defined as Q71:V72
To test this I have two versions of essentially the same report, one with only Cost Center AfterRange and this version runs in less than 2 minutes, then I have the other version in which I have added one more AfterRange to another column and that's when the hell breaks loose and this version of the report runs in 15 minutes. The number of records is roughly 2000, and I realize that the range causing the issue is applied on pretty much every rcord in result set but still I'd not expect the run time to increase by this much.
BPC Experts, ideas on what could be causing this issue, any help would be highly appreciated. thanks!

  • Performance pack on linux

I tried to install performance pack on Linux, the LD_LIBRARY_PATH is set and pointed to the correct location, but I got the following message when start weblogic server:
<Posix Performance Pack> Could not initialize POSIX Performance Pack.
<Performance Pack> Unable to load performance pack, using Java I/O.
We use Sun's 1.3 java(it could use native thread)
    Many Thanks!!!!

If you are on SP 7 or 8 the performance pack doesn't work. Have you tried this on 6 or less?

  • Unable to connect to the Linux server - getting a message - username and pa

    Hello,
I am unable to connect to the Linux server - getting a message - incorrect username or password . I have used this number of times and I am sure I am using the correct username and password. However, I tried to log in this time after few months to the Enterprise linux server and got this message. I have the VMware version 2.5.0 build-122581. I am using the Enterprise Linux 2.6.9-89.0.0.0.1.Esmp OS to use the Oracle EBS R12 off it. When I click the console in the VMware it starts the Linux. While it is at the 'Network starting, stage it shows 'Determining IP information : Failed' and few lines down the line 'starting smartd': Failed as well, while others are ok. I suspect these are cause of the message 'Incorrect username or password'.
What may be the issue? How do I resolve it?
Any urgent help would be highly appreciated.
