General optimization suggestions

Hi
I love Arch. It's fast, convenient and easy to understand. However i sometimes feel the system should be faster.
So maybe i'm missing something... i'd like to hear system optimization techniques in this thread.
Let me start:
* compile your own kernel
* make sure DMA is turned on for hard drives
* use light desktop env/wm

The point is, the time it takes to compile that kernel (7-20 minutes, I've heard) will never be recovered in terms of *noticeable* responsiveness to the user. You can quote numbers saying its more efficient or uses less memory, but these resources are certainly not scarce in modern systems.

Well, that's what I thought so i've been using standard kernel with adapted mkinitrd.conf for almost a year with great success. Also when I bought a new computer, I made sure I got plenty of (unexpansive) DDR400 SDRAM + the fastest rather than the biggest SATA(II) HDD along an AMD64 & a cool Mobo.
Now I succesfully compiled my 1st Iphitus' Archck kernel without initrd/~ramfs  on my old laptop last month, & I found it eating as low as 29MB RAM with Founy's e17-cvs fully launched, which I liked (less RAM for system is allways good & better still  on laptop in terms on usability & autonomy )
It seems that Archck kernel improved or maybe my knowledge on compiling an appropriate kernel, cauz' last week I compiled it on my Dell Latitude L400 along with Suspend & Speedstep support. Rebooted & :GASP:! Memory usage before starting X was 9 MB !!! I just  didn't even dreamed about such a result.
And yesterday on my AMD64 main PC (1024 MB RAM with lots of FS & accessories like TV TUner or external HDD) --> 19MB without X, and an amazing 60MB with f@h, rTorrent, e16  (X) & aterm
Thoses would have been postponned without Wain's great kernel26-archck PKGBUILD (FR) which has improved _a lot_ recently, & allow any AL user to take care only of the modules (s)he needs

  • Databases general optimizations

First of all let me give you a warm hello to all of you guys.
Coming to my subject, it is relevant to Oracle databases management in general for very large companies (e.g. TLC operators).
The usually face this kind of problems:
    - licences number proliferation, usually it gets out of control
    - several different Oracle databases that ask for consolidation
    - opportunity of "storage tiering", meaning moving less valuable database data on less expensive storage means
    - data classification, meaning how can I assess (automatically? manually?) which data are valuable and which are less ?
    - other opportunities you only might be aware of
Do you guys have experience in facing that kind of problems? Any suggestion regarding hw/sw solutions for that purpose?
    Thanks in advance.
    Marco

    Hi osgood
A good well designed cms system would also include a limited number of previous 'page' edits, (I normally save the last 5) or put another way the last 5 versions.
Also the database should be backed-up by your host at least every 24hrs, (if not change host). Unfortunately 'hacking' of databases through cms's is the favourite pastime of hackers, but it is a developers job to try and prevent this. This is why you should try and include a 'maintenance' contract as part of the package, this not only gives you a regular income but enables you to apply any know improvements required to your cms.
I am not a great fan of 'open-source' databases, mainly because they are the favourite type of site to hack, the code is freely available, and the location of the cms is well known.
Some time later the host has a major problem and loses all the database
updated information and consequently the site doesn't function correctly
anymore or at least loses the updated information (if that's possible?)
This is more often than not a consequence of the client altering something, (or someone they know well saying - "I can do improve that for you"), this is why I say use a maintenance contract that way you can check the date the pages where uploaded.

  • ITunes 10.5 optimization suggestions?

Hi all. I am currently using Windows 7 X64 with service pack 1. My system uses an AMD X6 3.2Ghz processor, with 8GB of RAM, a 7200rpm 1TB hard drive, and an NVIDIA 460GTX 1GB video card. I am currently using the latest version of both iTunes, as well as Quicktime.
I have found that many times when I go to the apps section of my library, the icons appear blank (missing the icon with just a grey icon in its place). Likewise, many times when I go to the music section, the CD covers show up, but iTunes itself hangs quite a bit.
I've already defragged my hard drive. I've tried reinstalling iTunes and Quicktime. I've already cleaned ous junk system files using both the system cleaner, as well as CCleaner. I'm using a very efficient anti-virus/anti-spyware app, which is already set to ignore iTunes entirely. I've already turned off Genius, and Home Sharing. I've also got it set to not look for Air speakers. I've also tried a variety of different viewing types, with the library only showing essential information.
Does anyone have any additional suggestions to both speed up, but also remove the lag and missing icons issues I'm dealing with? I have a rather big library of music as well apps/games. I know that puts some stress on my system, but with the processor I have, with htat much RAM, and that top of the line gaming video card, shouldn't iTunes run at incredible speed? I don't understand what is causing the hang-ups and lag, much less the cause of the frequent missing icons.
I realize it is quite likely Apple would prefer we are all using Apple computers, but few of us can afford the cost of one. Sadly, it almost seems like iTunes in Windows is an afterthought with little real interest. There are so many add-ons to enhance and improve iTunes with OS X, yet there are almost none for Windows. Likewise, as a side note: Since it is completely free, and virtually free of any licensing requirements or cost, it amazes me that Apple has not released any version of either Quicktime or iTunes for Linux. I would honestly prefer to use the latest version on Ubuntu, instead of Windows. Sadly, until a Linux version of both that are officially released and supported, it leaves me stuck with Windows.
Any tips, or suggestions on how to enhance and improve iTunes performance would be grealy appreciated. As I understand it, since I use both an iPhone, and iPad with both on iOS 5.0.1, that going back to any earlier version of iTunes that offered more stability and speed isn't really possible.

Yeah, I noticed this too and submitted to an inquiry to iConcertcal support. I don't expect anything to come of it either - since even their last update about it not working 10.4 was quick to point out that their iPhone app still worked fine. Great, thanks. You mean I can pay you $3 and only be able to use it on my iPhone but not on my computer? Where do I sign?!

  • General technology suggestions?

I've been away from web services for quite some time. I now have a project where I need to implement just the client side of a web service. In other words, I'm writing some code to integrate our app with a third-party web service. It's all SOAP-based, so let's not get into the SOAP vs REST debate here. I've been provided a WSDL. Also, I know I will have to use WS-Security 1.0.
Can somebody suggest the current best technologies to use for this? (I realize this question is fairly open-ended and might lead to a bunch of suggestions. Go ahead and shoot.)

Wow. That's a huge response. I figured an open-ended question about what is "best" would really spark some opinions. :) For now, I think I'm going with Apache CXF. I was going to use XFire since MyEclipse has a nice client-generation feature for it, but the XFire homepage recommends CXF. Axis2, from what I can tell, doesn't support WS-Security 1.0 out of the box.

  • IPad & Aperture: general workflow suggestions?

Fell in love with the iPad screen -- purchased one (excellent as a portfolio).  Looking for general advice on using it as part of my RAW workflow.  (I have Apple's "Camera Connection Kit".)
    Thanks  .
OK:  what I've done so far:  uploaded "shoots" to the iPad,  Cropped to suit. Separately imported same files into Aperture via the camera card.  Tried and failed to delete the photos albums on MiPad. That's it.  Decided to not use the iPad in my workflow until I learn more.  Removed all photos-syncing via iTunes.  Posted this message.

No answer, Kirby - I am thread-jacking . Which model did you choose? I want to buy one too, but I'll want it for geotagging and navigation, and maybe for browsing images, if I am away from home and do not want to take my 17" laptop along. It is funny - my 13" MBP went with me everywhere, but since I have a 17" model, that is no longer true.
I wonder if it may be possible to go on a week long photo safari with only a camera and an iPad.
So this thread is now officially completely OT.
I bought the semi-inexpensive one:  black, 32 GB (according to the iPad itself, 28 GB capacity), no 4G.
    - black because photos look better on it.  I prefer the white, but the white plastic has a slight yellow cast, and no one likes to look at face in a greasy collar
    - 32 GB because I knew from my iPhone that 16 wasn't enough, but 32 is.  I don't use it for video or storing music (I subscribe to XM and may subscribe to Pandora or equivalent).  More storage is always better, but I'd rather save the $100.
    - no 4G because I already pay way too much for my iPhone contract, I live in a city (lots of free WiFi), and I have very fast WiFi access at home and at the two places I work.  With iCloud, I only need cellular access on one device, and I already have it on MiPhone.
Obviously, without 4G (or whatever you have over in Euro-land ), you can't do geotagging or navigation.
I recently tested a camera with built-in GPS (Sony a77).  _Very, very_ handy.  I've been adding Aperture Locations by neighborhood, and had become used to that level of granularity -- and am simply giddy with the "This photo was taken in the middle of this block" specificity of the on-camera GPS tagging.
I added a great little keyboard I am happy to recommend: the Adonit Writer+ (for the new iPad -- the old one won't work well).  I touch type, I needed an iPad cover -- and now I have one that includes a BlueTooth keyboard.  Fantastic.  Should I want the iPad naked, it pops out and snaps in in 1s.  The keyboard charge is said to last a year.  So I have an iPad convertible to a netbook.  Did I say "Fantastic"?  I got the red one.
Also in my recommended column: the Wacom stylus for the iPad -- pricey but excellent, once you get used to writing/drawing with rubber on glass -- and the Adonic Jot pen -- the best drawing (not painting, drawing) tool for the iPad.  I draw on MiPad every morning and every evening.  Six hundred years ago artists used pads they prepared with flour (iirc -- haven't looked this up in a long time).  They sketched on them till they were dark with marks, then wiped them clean and put another layer of flour and glue on them.  A great way to learn.  The iPad comes close.
It's an _excellent_ size for light-weight travel.  I lived with a 12" Powerbook for a few years -- still, imho, the best form-factor of any computer ever (CinemaScope® makes sense at room size, but I've never thought it right for paintings, books, or computers) -- the iPad is close to a scaled down version of that screen.  The iPad, in the Adonit cover, fits right in the unused back sleeve of my most used camera bag (ThinkTank Retrospective 20).
But can it substitute for a laptop on a safari?  I don't know -- but having read widely on fitting the iPad into a photography workflow, I can report that most who've tried say "No".  It's certainly an excellent viewer -- I got, and you'll want (and want to include in your budget), the Apple Camera Connection Kit, which consists of two adapters: Applejack to USB, and Applejack to SC card.  Uploading RAW files (I use Sony cameras) works without a hitch.  Editing, adding metadata, or doing any organizing however has to wait until you're back with a real computer.  (OK, you can crop on the iPad, and tart things up with SnapSeed.)  The iPad works well for storage/backup, and for viewing the pictures as shot.  You can email those.  That's it.  If you record JPG only, don't edit, and don't keyword or use other organizing, the iPad will meet your needs.  If you have 6,000 "maven" points in the Apple Aperture discussion forum, you're going to find it more toy than tool.  On the other hand, if you can do without a computer on a safari, it is probably worth its weight to carry along as a viewer.
The screen is delicious.  It's absolutely fantastic for showing photos (if you're OK with showing them on a screen).
I haven't settled on a workflow yet, but I suspect I'll end up syncing a couple of Aperture Smart Folders (wirelessly, btw), possibly via iCloud, showing my "Portfolio" pictures and my "Shot in the last 23 days" pictures. At some point it will be a live camera viewer -- but we're not there yet.
So that's the rundown from Pittsburgh.  Let us know what you decide.  .

  • Report Optimization and Sub Reports

    CA Forum: Crystal Reports
Hello,I am currently working with Crystal Reports XI Release 2 and have questions about optimization.  We have a dataset (.NET) generated from Oracle and then passed to Crystal.  For our largest report it is taking 15 seconds for the dataset to be generated, but over 3 minuets for Crystal to generate the report.  We have 14 sub reports within this report.  I'm pretty certain this is the bottle neck.Any sub report optimization suggestions?  Would arrays be the way to go instead?

    Post Author: olaszb
    CA Forum: Crystal Reports
I went through the report and suppressed all sub reports and this cut the time down by 1/3 but still too slow.  On our largest report we are getting 376 pages and with the sub reports suppressed there are 263 pages returned.  Does anyone know if still goes through/caches the info of a sub report even if the report is suppressed?

  • Suggestions For Handling Bulk Updates Without Blocking Local User Updates

    Hi,
This is a request for general implementation suggestions.
We have a CRM database that is used by a call center application to allow reps to update customer info during business hours.  Outside of business hours we receive data feeds from another source that are bulk uploaded into the database to refresh the
data. This has been working fine for now, but we are expanding the use of the app to offices in other countries and are beginning to encounter more blocking during the bulk upload because now the app is being used outside our local business hours because of
    the time difference.
It seems this would be a common problem, but I haven't been able to identify a good source of information on methods to overcome this.
What suggestions do people have to complete bulk loads while still allowing updates by local users?
Ideas I have been considering include duplicating the database and performing merge replication, using service broker to queue updates during the bulk load, using snapshot isolation or isolation levels with row versioning....
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Reinis

I have considered trying to break the update into chunks, but my fear as you said is it will take a lot longer.
Quite a few years ago, I rewrote a process in our system to make it a set-based update for better performance. But I heard as late as today from our customer with the biggest volumes, that they are still running the old process which updates one by one,
because when they do all at once the blocks other operations. (Which admittedly is due to other shortcomings in the system.)
Anyway, I would recommend you to look into that, and particularly make the chunks size configurable. Maybe you are able to find a sweet spot where blocking is not a problem, but the chunks are till big enough to be efficient.
Both of those resolutions are feasible and I certainly know there will be significant changes we may have to undertake.  I was just thinking that this must be a really common issue now with the global reach of data and there must be people who have
    handled it in different ways.
It's not really a simple problem, and the solution is likely to depend on the current architecure you have. What fits in one shop, may not fit in another. And most of all, one solution may be a lot less costly to implement than another.

  • I'm trying to turn off the "Handoff" feature. When I go to "settings and then general" I do not have the option to turn off "Hand Off".  Help Please

Can't seem to make this work.  I am up to date with my updates on both I-Phone and I-Pad.  The "Hand-off" feature is working, and I don't want it.  How do I turn it off?  I don't have the option to do that when I go to General & Settings.  Is it located somewhere else?  Apple says that is where it is.  What am I doing wrong,  The "wonderful feature" is driving me crazy.  Surely it is others also...

  • Attach 64TB disk(s) to Azure VMs - please vote up this feature suggestion if you need it too

    http://feedback.azure.com/forums/34192--general-feedback/suggestions/6555737-attach-64tb-disk-s-to-azure-vms
Each Azure storage account comes with 500 TB of block blob storage capacity. However, this vast storage
is not available to be used via an Azure VM.
The best we can do right now is attach 16x 1TB disks (page blobs) to an A4 or bigger VM. This poses few
    problems:
    1. 16TB is way too small for many use cases such as using Azure as backup/DR target
    2. This coupling of storage to RAM/CPU is undesirable and drives enterprise clients to other cloud providers.
When will Microsoft provide us the ability to make VHDX 64TB+ files in Azure block blob storage and
    attach them to Azure VMs?
Dozens of cloud providers make such functionality available. When will be able to have the same in Azure??

  • Java space shooter game optimization

    Hi
I've just started a little space-arcade type of game.
For now there's a ship but it doesn't do much:
    - moves (accelerated)
    - fires (SPACE bar)
Now I'm going to start work on an enemy generator + collision test.
After that: pick-ups, a status bar(remaining life, passed time and so on), etc
Since I'm not such a experienced programmer with Java graphics, I would need any opinion I can get to optimize my code (smoother movement, less CPU/memory usage, etc.). Read about sprites but not sure if it's the case here.
You can take a look at the game and source codes at:
    http://www.stonefixion.com/temp/game
Please take a look over the four java files and if you have any optimization suggestions, they are mostly welcome.
    Waiting for some feedback,
    Cheers ;j

I've done a bit of reading and I think I've already done that(double buffering) like this:
         public void update (Graphics g)
              if (dbImage == null)
                   dbImage = createImage (this.getSize().width, this.getSize().height);
                   dbg = dbImage.getGraphics ();
              dbg.setColor (getBackground ());
              dbg.fillRect (0, 0, this.getSize().width, this.getSize().height);
              dbg.setColor (getForeground());
              paint (dbg);
              g.drawImage (dbImage, 0, 0, this);
}I put all the drawing in paint() and call it update().
    Thanx

  • Windows Server 2012 - Hyper-V - Cluster Sharded Storage - VHDX unexpectedly gets copied to System Volume Information by "System", Virtual Machines stops respondig

We have a problem with one of our deployments of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V with a 2 node cluster connected to a iSCSI SAN.
    Our setup:
Hosts - Both run Windows Server 2012 Standard and are clustered.
HP ProLiant G7, 24 GB RAM. This is the primary host and normaly all VMs run on this host.
HP ProLiant G5, 20 GB RAM. This is the secondary host that and is intended to be used in case of failure of the primary host.
We have no antivirus on the hosts and the scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched off.
    iSCSI SAN:
    QNAP NAS TS-869 Pro, 8 INTEL SSDSA2CW160G3 160 GB i a RAID 5 with a Host Spare. 2 Teamed NIC.
    Switch:
DLINK DGS-1210-16 - Both the network cards of the Hosts that are dedicated to the Storage and the Storage itself are connected to the same switch and nothing else is connected to this switch.
    Virtual Machines:
    3 Windows Server 2012 Standard - 1 DC, 1 FileServer, 1 Application Server.
1 Windows Server 2008 Standard Exchange Server.
All VMs are using dynamic disks (as recommended by Microsoft).
    Updates
We have applied the most resent updates to the Hosts, VMs and iSCSI SAN about 3 weeks ago with no change in our problem and we continually update the setup.
    Normal operation:
Normally this setup works just fine and we see no real difference in speed in startup, file copy and processing speed in LoB applications of this setup compared to a single host with two 10000 RPM Disks. Normal network speed is 10-200 Mbit, but occasionally
we see speeds up to 400 Mbit/s of combined read/write for instance during file repair.
    Our Problem:
Our problem is that for some reason a random VHDX gets copied to System Volume Information by "System" of the Clusterd Shared Storage (i.e. C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\System Volume Information).
All VMs stops responding or responds very slowly during this copy process and you can for instance not send CTRL-ALT-DEL to a VM in the Hyper-V console, or for instance start task manager when already logged in.
This happens at random and not every day and different VHDX files from different VMs gets copied each time. Some time it happens during daytime wich causes a lot of problems, especially when a 200 GB file gets copied (which take a lot of time).
    What it is not:
We thought that this was connected to the backup, but the backup had finished 3 hours before the last time this happended and the backup never uses any of the files in System Volume Information so it is not the backup.
    An observation:
When this happend today I switched on ShadowCopy (previous files) and set it to only to use 320 MB of storage and then the Copy Process stopped and the virtual Machines started responding again. This could be unrelated since there is no way to see
how much of the VHDX that is left to be copied, so it might have been finished at the same time as I enabled  ShadowCopy (previos files).
    Our question:
Why is a VHDX copied to System Volume Information when scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched off? As far as I know, nothing should be copied to this folder when this functionis switched off?

    Please note:
Please only answer our question and do not offer any general optimization tips that do not directly adress the issue! We want the problem to go away, not to finish a bit faster!

    Hallo Lawrence!
Thankyou for youre reply, some comments to help you and others who read this thread:
First of all, we use Windows Server 2012 and the VHDX as I wrote in the headline and in the text in my post. We have not had this problem in similar setups with Windows Server 2008 R2, so the problem seem to be introduced in Windows Server 2012.
These posts that you refer to seem to be outdated and/or do not apply to our configuration:
    The post about Dynamic Disks:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee941151(v=WS.10).aspx is only a recommendation for Windows Server 2008 R2 and the VHD format. Dynamic VHDX is indeed recommended by Microsoft when using Windows Server 2012 (please look in the optimization guide
    for Windows Server 2012).
Infact, if we use fixed VHDX then we would have a bigger problem since fixed VHDX are generaly larger then Dynamic Disks, i.e. more data would be copied and that would take longer time = the VMs would be unresponsive for a longer time.
The post "What's the deal with the System Volume Information folder"
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2003/11/20/55764.aspx is for Windows XP / Windows Server 2003 and some things has changed since then. for instance In Windows Server 2012, Shadow Copies cannot be controlled by going to Control panel -> System.
Instead you right-click on a Drive (i.e. a Volume, for instance the C drive/Volume) in Computer and then click "Configure Shadow Copies".
Windows Server 2008 R2 Backup problem
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsbackup/thread/0fc53adb-477d-425b-8c99-ad006e132336 - This post is about the Antivirus software trying to scan files used during backup that exists in the System Volume Information folder and we do not
have any antivirus software installed on our hosts as I stated in my post.
    Comment that might help us:
So according to “System Volume Information” definition, the operation you mentioned is Volume Shadow Copy. Check event viewer to find Volume Shadow Copy related event logs and post them.
    Why?
Furhter investigation suggests that a volume shadow copy is somehow created even though the Schedule for Shadows Copies is turned off for all drives. This happens at random and we have not found any pattern. Yesterday this operation took almost all available
disk space (over 200 GB), but all the disk space was released when I turned on scheduled Shadow Copies for the CSV.
    I therefore draw these conclusions:
The CSV Volume has about 600 GB of disk space and since Volume Shadows Copy used 200 GB, or about 33% of the disk space, and the default limit is 10% then I conclude that for some reason the unscheduled Volume Shadow Copy did not have any limit (or ignored
    the limit).
When I turned on the Schedule I also change the limit to the minimum amount which is 320 MB and this is probably what released the disk space. That is, the unscheduled Volume Shadow Copy operation was aborted and it adhered to the limit and deleted the
Volume Shadow Copy it had taken.
I have also set the limit for Volume Shadow Copies for all other volumes to 320 MB by using the "Configure Shadow Copies" Window that you open by right clicking on a drive (volume) in Computer and then selecting "Configure Shadow Copies...".
It is important to note that setting a limit for Shadow Copy Storage, and disabaling the Schedule are two different things! It is possible to have unlimited storage for Shadow Copies when the Schedule is disabled, however I do not know if this was the case
Before I enabled Shadow Copies on the CSV since I did not look for this.
I now have defined a limit for Shadow Copy Storage to 320 MB on all drives and then no VHDX should be copied to System Volume Information since they are all larger than 320 MB.
Does this sound about right or am I drawing the wrong conclusions?

There is something strange about the limits on the Secondary host!
I have not in any way changed the settings on the Secondary host and as you can see, the Secondary host has a maximum limit of only 35 MB storage on the CSV, but it also shows that this is 10% of the Volume. This is clearly not the case since 10% if 600
    GB = 60 GB!
The question is, why does it by default set a too small limit (i.e. < 320 MB) on the CSV and is this the cause of the problem? I.e. is the limit ignored since it is smaller than the smallest amount you can provide using the GUI?
Is the default 35 MB maximum Shadow Copy limit a bug, or is there any logical reason for setting a limit that according to the GUI is too small?

  • Project for school - I encountered some problems

School gave me and my team a assignment to make a simulation of a floor-robot called Robbie. You can see Robbie as a plotter it is a round robot with a pen that it can turn on or off. The simulation should be of a remote control which gives commands to a class called Robbie.
    http://yvo.net/forum/Version16.zip
is what our group made so far.
    Our problems are:
-> When Robbie moves, he shocks, I think this has something to do with the paint routines of the underlying Frame. (Frame has a container called World which has a lightweight component called Robbie). We used double buffering, it does not flicker, it shocks.
-> Collision Detection, how should we do Collision Detection between a Wall and a Robbie (Wall can be turned 360 degrees, not just horizontal or vertical). The Robbie to Robbie collision detection works, but could be optimized a lot I think.
-> It is too slow, are their ways to speed up the calculations/smarter repaint? (General Optimization, on school it should run pretty smoothly on a 486).
All the information is in the zip-file and all the source-codes. I use JDK1.4 to compile/run. I noticed that JDK1.3 results in bad repainting. It's a package, the MAIN class is hvu.robbie.gui.MainFrame
All suggestions are welcome, thank you,

    Hi,
The thread in RobbieControl should have a sleep
period, instead of having it in the RobbieMove method.
Right now its just calling the robbie-methods all the
time. Actually I dont like that thread at all, think u
should have a thread closer to the paintcalling
methods instead, maybe in robbieMove or just in
Robbie. The problem is, forward should be able to be called manually, like forward(100). Then Robbie should just move the 100 steps, but not too quick (that's why we implemented the pause). We implemented the Thread into the Remote Control, so that the user can keep the button pressed and Robbie will keep on moving AND because the method forward has to return the real number of steps it made, in order to do that (with 2 robbies) is to move the robbie trough the process of calling the method forward, then keep him busy with the moving process and then return. We first tried one Thread for the Remote and another one for moving Robbie. But that became complicated because the first Thread had to wait() in forward and awaken the move Thread, and after moving set the move thread to wait() en notify() the remote control Thread. But you can't force a wait() and notify() so that gave problems.

U should probably look at ur doublebuffering. Instead
of doublebuffer the whole 'world' just buffer the
components in it. That way u will avoid that
components isnt fully painted when they move. If doing
that, components-double buffering, u need to repaint
the area where the component have moved from. And u
will need to override some update(Graphics g) methods,
in World and in robbie. They should just call paint.
Ive tried it and the rotating looks much better,
though the movement needs some improvement. I think u
maybe need to override setLocation...Could you maybe give me a bit of code or explain it?
I do not understand the process of container => container => component painting... My emailadress is [email protected] (there you can send source of post it here)

I think the collision-detection should be called in
World.moveObject.We will change that, thank you :)

Hope theese comment isnt to vague. I will try find
some old code of mine, and compare it with urs.

  • PProheadless.exe

    Hello,
first post here.  I'm running Adobe Production Suite CS4, v. 4.01.
System specs.: Asus P6t Deluxe v2, i7 processor, 12 gb ram, matrox rt.x2, 4 internal sata drives at 250 gb each, 2 tb raid 0 for video.  Window Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
I'm also encountering this same issue on a seperate computer:
specs.: Asus P5E3 Deluxe, 8 GB ram, quad core processor at 2.67 mghz, 4 internal sata drives, 1 tb raid 0 for video.  Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit.  Again, running Adobe CS4 Production Premium.
The issue: from Premiere Pro export uncompressed avi through Adobe Media Encoder, 30fps, progressive.  The timeline contains simple lower thirds and an avi.  Media Encoder will begin the coding process and about 1/4 of the way through the timeline this error will appear:  "PProheadless.exe has stopped working."  I have already searched this forum concerning this issue and did find one entry that stated a resolution ... Edit>Preferences>General, and then check "optimize the render=memory."  This did not resolve the issue.  I also have Windows Vista running fast with the bare essentials and have virtual memory set for efficient operation.  Anyway, it would seem with 12 GB of ram that Media Encoder would have enough to work with.  I have used CS4 for several months and at first the PProheadless.exe never appeared.  I'm scratching my head as to why now.
Is anyone else encountering this issue with AME?  Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    Cliff

    Dear all,
I have read very carefully this thread (and a few others), I have tried the solution described ... but nothing seems to work and EMA still crash, won't encode and I get the "PProHeadless.exe has caused an error ..." message.
I use Premiere Pro CS4 on a Windows Vista 64bits (Home Premium), i7 Core. I have installed the latest updates for both Premiere and AME.
For weeks, it worked perfectly, then something odd haapened: for some sequences, Premiere would encode perfectly for some, AME would stall very fast. No erroe message, just that after few second (between 2 and 4), it just stopped, as if the encoding was finished although it never stopped. Puzzled, I re-installed Premiere (and AME) .. and now I m getting the "PProHeadless.exe has caused an error ..." crash everytime I m encoding. Extremely frustrating...
I have tried few solutions described in this thread, notably
    - Open Task Manager , go to Affinity and reduce the number of CPU PProHeadless.exe can work on - it was adviced to reduce it to just 2, did not work. Also reduce it to just one, did not work either. By looking carefully at the task manager, I saw taht also I ve set PProHeadless.exe to work only on CPU 0, the number of CPU Task manager said it was working was moving from 0 top 2. Strange..yet it was still a small number, and, yes the crash happened again.

    - I have also used another solution found somewhere else, iei Select in PPro: edition >preference > general> , optimize the render = MEMORY  and I also inscrease the asio memory buffer to 4096 and selected "32 bit" to avoid the "jkl" bug
    Nothing works...
I have noticed that one participant, Ciro, solved the issue by "In the Windows' Error report I clicked the 'details' button and found that it pointed to - nvoglnt.dll, which, after some 'googling' pointed to Nvidia graphics drivers. I downloaded a nvoglnt.dll file, and replaced the one I had in Windows\system32."
I tried the same, my error message pointed to ImageRenderer.dll which seems to be a file used by Photoshop.. Dont know why Photoshop is linked to this (maybe because the still pictures I have were trimmed down and turned into japegs in Photoshop??). Anyway I m a bit weary of replacing a Photoshop file by something of the same name found on Internet...
Would you recommend to do that?
I m a bit desesparate, any help is more than welcomed!
