General Sun JES Directory Questions

I'm doing some research for a program at work. I have a few general questions that I hope someone knowledgeable about the Sun JES directory can answer.
1. How does the Sun Directory control access to resources?
2. How are groups formed and maintained?
3. How does the whole access control scheme work?
I know these are very broad, but any info you can either provide me or direct me too will be greatly appreciated. I haven't had much luck researching this online. Thank you.

The Sun ONE Directory controls access to resources usually using aci's, which can be created at different branch points and allow differing permissions. This can also be done using RBAC (Role Based Access Control), where a role can be created, assigned to a user object and then aci's assigned to that role.
There is a chapter in the Administration Guide on permissions and setting them in the directory.
With regards Groups, there are two kinds, Static and Dynamic. Static Groups are defined by users creating them and then manually assigning user objects to them. Dynamic groups are created by LDAP searches which populate the groups based on an attribute or search criteria which links all the members.
You can set aci's to the branch points in the directory dependent on group membership if so required.
The chapter in the Admin guide which is about Access Control is:
http://docs.sun.com/source/816-6698-10/aci.html
If you have any further questions, please post them and im sure someone will respond.
Thanks

  • Root is running Sun One Directory Proxy Question ?

While i was installing the directory proxy server, i gave all root to own the files? Is Sun One Directory Proxy suppose to run as root or can i run as non-root user ?

You can (and probably should) run as a non-root user, assuming you're running on a port above 1024.
If you've already installed as root, and root owns all the files, the following should theoretically work:
    - Shut down DPS
    - Edit <dps-root>/etc/dpsDefaultConfiguration.ldif, and change the ids-proxy-con-userid attribute to the user ID you would like the server to run as
    - Modify the same entry in the directory server that holds your proxy's configuration information, like:
    ldapmodify -h config_dir_host -p config_dir_port -D "cn=directory manager" -w password
    dn: ids-proxy-con-config-name=<instanceName>,ou=system,ou=dar-config,o=NetscapeRoot
    changetype: modify
    replace: ids-proxy-con-userid
ids-proxy-con-userid: <same value as you put in the LDIF file above>
    - Change the ownership of all the files in the DPS install directory
    - Change over to the user that you selected and try to start the DPS process

I haven't used BrightMail before, so guessing from general administrivia: the server can't find the additional libraries (the config lines you showed don't include it explicitly with a full path).
Wild guess: try adding the birghtmail library directory path (/opt/symantec/sbas/Scanner/lib) to LD_LIBRARY_PATH by changing the start scripts for the messaging service, or (not so prone to overwrite by upgrades) by using Solaris crle utility:
crle -u -s /opt/symantec/sbas/Scanner/libIf there are also 64-bit versions of the libraries, also issue this command:
    crle -64 -u -s /opt/symantec/sbas/Scanner/lib/amd64for x86_64, or
    crle -64 -u -s /opt/symantec/sbas/Scanner/lib/sparcv9for SPARC.

  • Call Manager 9.1 Active Directory Question(s)

    Hello All!
Firstly let me establish that I am not an administrator of our VoIP system however I do manage the Server side of our network.  We are in the process of planning an Active Directory upgrade and I'm having some difficulty getting a question answered about the requirements for  Call Manager.  We are at version 9.1 of Call Manager currently with our Active Directory version at 2003 R2.  We are planning to upgrade to Active Directory version 2008 R2 (functional level) however we would like to use Server 2012 R2 as the OS for our AD servers.  From a Microsoft standpoint this is a valid solution, it's built into Active Directory that you can run at different "functional levels" of AD on higher server operating systems.  Any Call Manager applications that require a Windows operating system would run on whatever works for that (2003 or 2008 etc).  Can we use Server 2012 R2 as the Domain Controller operating system while running at 2008 R2 functional level for Active Directory and still retain our Cisco support?

    Hi Allen,
This is from Cisco site (you already may have seen this), though it talk about the directory services but it is specifically mentioned 2008. 2012 may work and specially as you are saying with functional level set to 2008 shouldn't have any issues. But Cisco have not tested that and you may get into support issues (if any).
Its completely tested and supported with CUCM 10.X
    Version 9:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/admin/9_0_1/ccmsys/CUCM_BK_CD2F83FA_00_cucm-system-guide-90/CUCM_BK_CD2F83FA_00_system-guide_chapter_010011.html#CUCM_TK_C4E65231_00
    Configure LDAP directory
If you want to do so, you can add users from your corporate directory to the Cisco Unified Communications Manager database by synchronizing the user data to the database. Cisco Unified Communications Manager allows synchronization from the following directories to the database:
    Microsoft Active Directory 2000
    Microsoft Active Directory 2003
    Microsoft Active Directory 2008
Microsoft Active Directory Application Mode 2003
    Microsoft Lightweight Directory Services 2008

  • Migrating data from Sun ONE directory server into openLDAP

    Hi,
I was to migrate the data from Sun ONE directory server into openldap. Has anybody done this or know about this. Can you please share the steps that needs to be done.
NOTE: I have exported the data into LDIF file but when I run with ldapadd into the open ldap
    ldap_add: Invalid syntax (21)
additional info: objectClass: value #1 invalid per syntax
Are there specific schemas that i need. Where can I find them?
    Thanks

Why would you want to migrate data into an OpenLDAP server ?Good Question, let me explain you my problem with Sun DS.
No Question DS is the better product (even Red Hat realized this).
Problem: DS is not a base Solaris 10 OS component, for patch support
you need some additional plan, now sun marketing nightmare comes ;o)
Every year service plans are changed (want a SJES or a DS or a DSEE ?)
so use solaris with OpenLDAP, or linus with NSDS.
Sun please give us a Solaris Core Component called LDAP Server (no need for trillions of entries).

  • Sun java directory server and Active Directory

We are using two different directory servers Sun java directory server and active directory.
My question is how we can have password synchronization between these two directory servers.
I have checked Sun Java[TM] System Identity Synchronization for Windows 1 2004Q3
    http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=41537425
It seems that it's supported platforms is only for solaris and windows , but I have installed my Sun java directory server on linux and obviously it doesn't work for me.
I would be grateful if anyone can suggest a solution to work around this situation.
I have checked identity manager , I would like to know that if I can do this using this product.
    http://www.sun.com/software/products/identity_mgr/specs.jsp
    --regards.
    Sara

Yes RHEL 4 is a supported OS with DSEE 6.0.
Identity Synchronization for Windows is a part of DSEE that allows synchronization of users, passwords and groups between Sun Directory Server and Active Directory bi-directionally without altering the users environments, ie it does not require that users change their current habits.
Identity Manager is a complete identity management solution that is targetting enterprise work flow when it comes to user provisioning and de-provisioning, but also allows to build authentication and password change forms that will provision the passwords to many different systems including Sun Directory Server and Active Directory but also IBM mainframes, legacy applications, databases...
If you are implementing a complete identity management solution, then go with Identity Manager. If you need a lightweight and fast solution for just synchronizing users and passwords between Sun DS and MS AD, Identity Synchronization for Windows should be your choice.

  • How to migrate Sun One directory server to a new physical server install

    need help
We have to move our existing installation of sun on directory server 5.2 to a new physical server.
We have a new physical server with a new host name. I am trying to find an easiest way to take a snapshot of our existing server and put it on a new installation
So will installing sun one directory server , its shows me two choices either to create a new instance or copy configuration from a existing server
What do i choose and which is the fastest route to replicate my old server
    Thanks a bunch in advance
    Sganb

    Hi,
I'm glad you're still using the old, glorious Sun One Directory Server 5.2, because it brings me back a lot of memories... But are you seriously talking of the 'plain' version, with no patches/hot fixes on top? If that's the case, you're using of a software that has been developed in 2004 and released in Jan 2005! Just for you to be aware, in the last *8* (eight) years a considerable number (in the magnitude of 10^3) of bugs, security problems and performance issues has been identified and fixed...
However, to provide a better answer to your question, it would be important to understand the 'big picture' in terms of scenario and requirements:
    1) Is this a critical 24x7 service for which you need to perform an on-line migration or you have a 'maintenance window' during which the service may be switched off?
    2) Is the old server member of replication environment? If yes, how many masters/slaves do you have already? Shall the new server be part of this topology? What role shall it have?
    3) Would it be possible to make the the old server able to communicate with the new server?
    4) How big is the database that you've got to migrate? Do you have any requirement in terms of caches?
    5) Do you take backups on a regularly basis and have in place working (*tested*) backup/restore procedures?
    6) Is the new server conserving or changing the O.S. and architecture? [SPARC->SPARC, x86->x86, SPARC->x86, Solaris -> ? , 32 .vs. 64-bit? ]
    7) What are the steps you did to 'install' the software on the new server?
    Thanks,
    Marco
P.S.: I don't wanna sound 'scaring' with all these questions, neither this should be intended as an 'hidden advertising' for Oracle Professional/Consulting Services, but the only way to not put in jeopardy your data is being aware of the risks, having the control of what's going on and ... possibly have a 'B' plan ;-)
P.S.S.: My last suggestion is to consider a migration to a later release AS SOON AS POSSIBLE; the latest is ODSEE 11.1.1.7, which is available here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/downloads/oid-11g-161194.html
and seems to work pretty well ;-)

  • Active Directory 2003 and Sun One Directory Server 5.2

I just installed Sun One Directory Server 5.2 on a Linux machine. I want to configure LDAP on that machine so that it can be authenticated on Active Directory 2003. How do I go about doing this?

Active Directory server is a "directory server" (and kerberos server.) If your linux client authenticates against Active Directory it doesn't have to involve the Sun Directory Server at all. You have several general approaches you could investigate:
    1. Linux client gets accounts and and authentication via LDAP from Active Directory
If you use AD to handle unix LDAP authentication (opt 1) you may need to extend schema in AD to add the unix password field. I haven't tried it yet, but hope to.
    2. Linux client gets accounts from AD LDAP and authorization from AD Kerberos.
There should be docs on support.microsoft.com on enabling kerberos support for non-Win clients.
    3. Linux client (with samba client installed, with winbind or pam_smb to support unix level services) gets accounts and authentication as a "Windows" client from Active directory "Windows server"
Check the samba.org docn or forums- I think this is a pretty common solution.
    4. Linux client gets account information from Sun Directory server but uses kerberos (against active directory) for authentication.
There should be docs on support.microsoft.com on enabling kerberos support for non-Win clients.
5 Linux client gets account and authorization from Sun Directory server, which the sun Directory server configured to use Active Directory as a Kerberos server.
    Probably incredibly complex.

  • Problem installing Sun JES 5u1 on OpenSolaris (snv_b77 x86)

We have a new X4600 server dedicated to tests of the latest Sun-related software stack we could get our hands on to build a demo-installation of "the newest" for a customer, so we installed it with OpenSolaris (snv_b77 was the most recent back then).
After doing the needed tests, we decided to see how the Sun JES behaves with a recent Solaris. We have many Sun JES projects (dating back from Portal 6.0 and JES 2003Q4, JES 4 and 5/5u1); and since Solaris 10u2 (6/06) we host them in zones of a "minimalistically" configured server (approx 270 packages).
When I tried to repeat a similar approach with OpenSolaris (snv_b77) and Sun JES 5u1, the Orion(?) installer behaved differently than on Solaris 10u3 or 10u4. In particular, there are less choice options in Directory Server (i.e. no Directory Proxy Server at all), and a dozen lines in High Availability services (HA for this and HA for that, albeit "Unsupported in zones").
The bigger problem is that the installer doesn't succeed in installing some packages (Cacao, mfwk, jdmk) and configuring the products. I could manually register some of the CACAO components and get a working pair of Directory Server and DPS, now I'm fighting with the Application Server.
What's sad, I don't have to do these tricks with any recent Solaris 10 server we've had set up.
The root of the problem seems to be that the system identifies as "SunOS 5.11" and the installer doesn't seem to support that (installation goes on with a stacktrace that classes for 5_11 could not be found). Example:
    PSPERR:++++++++++++++++++++++++++ {Missing Resource Exception in the loading of the PkgRelativePaths{Can't find bundle for base name com.sun.entsys.installer.common.resources.PkgRelativePaths5_11, locale en}}
I made a wrapper script for /sbin/uname which replaces "5.11" with "5.10" and linked "Solaris_11" to "Solaris_10" directories in the unpacked distribution, but these steps did not help.
Does anybody know of tricks required to fool the installer to work in "Solaris_10" mode regardless of the system? Changing programs to wrappers, or replacing /etc/release and similar files are okay - the setup is in a zone dedicated to one task.
Or is there a newer Sun JES beta release which does not need such fooling? :)

I had the same problem this evening on b81, and have had the problem in the past but didn't care long enough to look at it. I do care tonight because I need to use B81 with Crossbow, so as I have VNIC support.
I've spent some time figuring it out (thanks to truss + find) and I've found a way that sorts the issue. You need not rename directories (in fact, this will break it in my experience).
NOTE: Seeing as you've mucked around with directories and so on, unzip a fresh copy of JES.
NOTE: Sun probably don't want you to do this and it is unsupported, do so at your own peril.
Run the installer (I've used text mode):
Unable to access a usable display on the remote system. Continue in command-line mode?(Y/N)
    Y
Once you say "Y", I've found it goes off creates a directory called /tmp/.entsys_CaChE
Inside this directory you will find the following seemingly relevant files:
    ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/PPXMLS/Clusters/EntsysCluster_SUNOS_SPARC_5_10.xml
    ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/PPXMLS/Clusters/EntsysCluster_SUNOS_X86_5_10.xml
    ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/PPXMLS/Clusters/OrionCluster_SUNOS_SPARC_5_10.xml
    ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/PPXMLS/Clusters/OrionCluster_SUNOS_X86_5_10.xml
    ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/com/sun/entsys/installer/common/resources/PkgRelativePaths5_10.properties
In another terminal window, copy the relevant files for your platform to the same file but with 5_11 instead of 5_10
    cd /tmp/.entsys_CaChE
    cp ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/PPXMLS/Clusters/EntsysCluster_SUNOS_X86_5_10.xml ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/PPXMLS/Clusters/EntsysCluster_SUNOS_X86_5_11.xml
    cp ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/PPXMLS/Clusters/OrionCluster_SUNOS_X86_5_10.xml ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/PPXMLS/Clusters/OrionCluster_SUNOS_X86_5_11.xml
    cp ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/com/sun/entsys/installer/common/resources/PkgRelativePaths5_10.properties ./Solaris_x86/.install/config/com/sun/entsys/installer/common/resources/PkgRelativePaths5_11.properties
Then continue the installer as normal.
Then you should get to here:
    1. Install
    2. Start Over
    3. Exit Installation
What would you like to do [1] {"<" goes back, "!" exits}?
And if you continue now things are happy:
    Java Enterprise System 5
    |-1%--------------25%-----------------50%-----------------75%--------------100%|
    Installation Complete
Software installation has completed successfully. You can view the installation
summary and log by using the choices below. Summary and log files are available
    in /var/sadm/install/logs/.
    All good!

    1) Multithreading issue that causes 2 threads writing

  • Seek your help about the issue of Sun JES can not work well in HP9000

Recently I am testing Sun JES (Java Enerprise System) 2005Q4 in HP9000 (HP-UX 11.11), but I encountered some troubles, after installation, Sun AM -- Access Manager (its old name is Identity Server) and Sun Portal Server can not work well, others (such as Sun App Svr, Directory Svr, Admin Svr) are OK.
When I try to access AM admin console (http://myhost.mydomain.com:8080/amconsole), exception was thrown as below:
    exception

After many test, I still can not finger out what is the real reasons casued this exception in HP-UX.
The possible risk is JES 2005Q4 requires some software and hp-ux bundles patches before install JES, but I can NOT find the exact version of them from hp web site, and use corresponding higher version to release them.
    JES 2005Q4 needs:
    Perl (B.5.6.1.F) HP-UX11i
    Tour A.02.02
    Libiconv 1.9.2
    GOLDAPPS11i & GOLDBASE11i (June 2004, B.11.11.0406.5)
    I installed:

Keynote 6.5 is stable and reliable under Yosemite for most users.
As with all new operating systems and applications, a small number of users find a few problems.
Copy and pasting text from and into Keynote from all the applications I have, work perfectly: the applications include; Safari, Mail, Word, PowerPoint, excel, Pages, Numbers, iMovie, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator.
If you want to place graphics into Keynote, use one of the following methods:
    Insert > Coose
click the media button on an image placehoder
click the media button on the tool bar
drag and drop from a Finder window
Copy and pasting images into Keynote is not supported

We finally able to install Sun One Directory Proxy 5.2 , but we are unable to start the Proxy server, we are getting error "Since the DPS.pid file was not found, DPS-server is assumed down
Anybody has any clue / ideas that we would very help fulll?
    Thank

I've been struggling with this and another problem with DPS for a couple of weeks.
It generally starts up fine when you dont have SSL enabled. The moment you enable SSL, a couple of things go for a toss:
    1. The problem mentioned above surfaces. Are you facing this problem even without SSL?
    2. If you log into the Administration console, and try to make changes to the DPS configuration, it will give an error stating that "Error in writing to Configuration Directory". But apparently, it will manage to save things. Just that when you try to start it with SSL enabled, it won't. Neither from the command line, nor the GUI.
Anyone managed to fix this? Sun informed us that there is a problem with Jars, but thats about it.

  • Web Hosting Manager for Sun JES?

Does somebody know about realizations of Web Hosting Manager (like Cpanel/WHM) for Sun Web server?
Does Cpanel port for Sun JES / Sun Solaris exist? Or some software system based on Java?

Sorry, if my question was incomprehensible. Some explanations below ...
I try to find solution, which will allow to use Sun Java System Web Server as comfortable platform for web hosting. Functionality of needed software package should be similar to functionality of Cpanel/WHM.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPanel (or directly http://www.cpanel.net):
"cPanel ("Control Panel") is a graphical web-based web-hosting control panel, designed to make administration of websites easy. cPanel handles all aspects of website administration in its interface.
WebHost Manager (WHM) is a web-based tool used by server administrators and resellers to manage hosting accounts on a web server."
Unfortunately, Cpanel/WHM is developed and supported for Linux (or FreeBSD)/Apache platform.
    Questions below.
    1. Does somebody know about installation and using of Cpanel/WHM on Sun Web Server / Solaris?
    2. Does somebody know about software systems with same functionality, but written for Sun Web Server / Solaris?

  • SUN JES 8.1 Q2UR2: Long time taken in getting database connection.

Application server registered intermittent slowness in getting database connection from javax.sql.DataSource. Based on the following JMX value, the application servers still havent reached the threshold. Its identified the slowness was due to application server performing validation (select count(*) from dual).
    Sample code:
ds.getConnection(username, password); // where DS is the javax.sql.DataSource
    Network
It is observed that the bi-directional ping stats showed that the response time < 1.19 ms. Network Switch port utilisation was <30% and there were no errors and collision detected.
    Database
Based on oracle database statspack, it showed that the database is healthy. On top of that, the following query was scheduled to be executed every second to monitor Select count(*) from dual elapsed time.
    select sess.sid, sess.serial#, sess.client_info, sess.program, sql.sql_text, sql.elapsed_time from V$SESSION sess, V$SQL sql where sess.sql_hash_value=sql.hash_value and upper(sql.sql_text) like 'SELECT COUNT(*) FROM DUAL' order by sess.sid
Basically this query will capture the cumulative elapsed time per session id. This query is able to caption Select count(*) from dual that ran more than 2 seconds.
Example 1 how the cumulative elapsed time registered in the log:
2006_11_02_16_53_55,Connection 1, SID 1 perform a select count(*) from dual. Oracle registered elapsed time 10 ms.
2006_11_02_16_53_55,Connection 2, SID 2 perform a select count(*) from dual. Oracle registered elapsed time 10 ms.
2006_11_02_16_54_57,Connection 1, SID 1 perform a select count(*) from dual. Oracle registered elapsed time 20 ms.
2006_11_02_16_54_58,Connection 1, SID 1 perform a select count(*) from dual. Oracle registered elapsed time 30 ms.
2006_11_02_16_54_58,Connection 2, SID 2 perform a select count(*) from dual. Oracle registered elapsed time 20 ms.
Example 2 If query ran more than 2 sec:
2006_11_02_16_53_55,Connection 1, SID 1 perform a select count(*) from dual. Oracle registered elapsed time 10 ms.
2006_11_02_16_53_57,Connection 1, SID 1 perform a select count(*) from dual. Oracle registered elapsed time 20 ms.
2006_11_02_16_54_57,Connection 1, SID 1 perform a select count(*) from dual. Oracle registered elapsed time 2030 ms. << if query that ran more than 2 secs, there will be a sudden jump of 2 secs in the subsequent cumulative elapsed time.
Previously based on jmx log, it do registered 10k connections was acquired in 1 second and only 6 active connections was used. If same connection was used and on the same second, the cumulative elapsed time will registered in the log. The longest elapsed time that registered in 2 Nov 2006 01:00 pm to 05:00 pm logs was 800 ms but long get database connection still registered 5 to 7 seconds.
    Questions:
    1) Is it possible that I can use dtrace to capture the bottleneck?

  • Sun java DIRECTORY SERVER 6.0 WITH SUN OPENSSO 8

    Hi all,
I have install the sun java directory server 6.0.
Now I have install the sun openssl ( I could had installed the sun java access manager but i wanna use the sun opensso 8 for SSO).
when created the directory i.e. by using command from directory preparation tool, the directory server stop starting.
It do not start and is asking me the error as follows,
    bash-3.00# /var/opt/SUNWdsee/dsins1/start-slapd

[20/Feb/2009:14:44:30 +0500] - ERROR<4129> - Bootstrap config - conn=-1 op=-1 msgId=-1 - Configuration error Please edit the configuration file to correct the reported problems and then restart the server. Server exiting.
Server not running!! Failed to start ns-slapd process.
Note: while preparing the directory (sun java directory preparation tool) I mentioned the schema 2 i.e. ACCESS MANAGER, because sun opensso 8 is the latest version for Sun java access manager ?
    Any help??????????????
    Regards
    Adeel

Looks like the attribute sunIdentityServerDiscoEntries is defined twice in the schema. Run the following and see where it is defined for the second time.
    # cd /var/opt/SUNWdsee/dsins1/config/schema
    # grep -w sunIdentityServerDiscoEntries *.ldif | grep -iv objectclasses
