Get Connection from connection pooling

Hi,
I am aware of the fact that to get connection from a connection pool we need to add JNDI name in context.xml of apache tomcat and use it in our application to get connection. I have tested this and it works fine.
Now, we have 12 servers having free database each having almost 20 small Java applications for different purposes (get data from server database do some business logic and maipulation with data from central database and store on central database) each connecting to central database.
We were enjoying life till we had almost 8-9 servers but now many times we have connection issues as there are too many connections to central database and servers are going to increase.
I know my company design is not good but we need some solution.
I want my Java applications to take database connectivity using connection pooling on servers. My Java applications are standalone applications that do not run in web server. Is this approach fine?
I searched google for some solution but was unable to find.
Any pointers would be really helpful.
I think that since my application is outside web container I am unable to get Context (java:/comp/env). Please give me some pointers on how can i get web server context outside web server.

I was not able to make a simple oracle connection and that hurts me.

the steps which i have followed are... I have made a connection pool using weblogic type 4 driver in the administrative console... then i have created the data source using jndi name jnindogulf1..... but although i am getting the connection pool i am receiving error ehice executing jdbc commands

Best way to use Sun Web Server connection pooling with Web Application?

I have a number of applications that run Oracle and MySQL queries via Sun Web Server 6.1. I use the Web Server's built-in connection pooling, which works fairly well.
As an interface with the connections I receive from the Web Server, I use a class, which (1) accepts the SQL and database name from a tool, (2) Opens the connection, runs the SQL, closes the connection, (3) puts the content of the result set into a Vector of Hashtables, (4) returns that Vector to the tool.
Why do I use this Vector? That way, in my applications, I don't have to deal with opening connections (or getting them from the pool) and I don't have to worry about closing connections, because that's done automatically by the interface class.
Is this a dumb approach to use? I'm a bit paranoid about open DB connections, because we have had a number of problems where connections would not be closed, go stale in oracle, and clog up the database resources.
Can you suggest a better way to (1) smartly control opening and closing connections, and (2) enabling fast database access?

Creating connection using Connection Pooling!

I am getting the Connection object from the pool!
my application has series of servlets & JSPs wherein some pages only use the connection object and run some SQL queries!
now, I want to get the Connection object once & for all, and then use it wherever I need it. How do I make this happen? How does the Connection object go to the other pages??

Not needed. Let each method that needs one, get one from the pool. The pool does not open a new connection every time a connection is asked for (only when there are not any available connections left) so the overhead of opening a new connection is not present. This is the entire purpose of a connection pool.
If, however, you absolutely must do something like this, then you can pass it as an argument to every method that needs it (they of course have to declare a Connection parameter). Just don't close it, or it goes back to the pool.

Connection Pools for DB2 UDB 8.2 on a SUN AS 8.1

has somebody experience or knows a place where I can get more information in setting up a connection pool to a DB2 UDB 8.2 database from a SUN AS 8.1 server?
I'm struggling now for some weeks to get this working, but it doesn't work. I've tried the JDBC JAR's delivered with DB2 but get configuration errors. When I use the JDBC JAR's mentioned in the SUN AS documentation, it seems that the SUN AS 8.1 opens a connection, which is refused on the DB2 side.
The setup of a connection pool to a Postgres DB worked directly. The connection pool is correctly setup in the SUN AS but the ping doesn't work.
Hope somebody can help.

I think the exception is thrown because the pool was never allocated. So this exception should be okay.
Then comes a lot of reflection stuff (at least in my opinion) and finally there is a try to open the connection. What I don't understand is why there is

I recently upgraded from java 1.4/tomcat 5.0 to java 1.5/tomcat 5.5. I am having difficulty getting connection pooling to work, however.
Here are the details:
1. Using mysql 4.1.3 beta -- it has been working fine for my purposes for a while
2. put mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar in tomcat/common/lib.
3. Here is server.xml:

</Context>5. Tomcat starts up find without showing any errors. However, when I try and run the application I get an error. The error occurs when the user tries to log in, which involves querying the mysql database. Here is some of what it spits up:

I was trying to set up connection pooling in tomcat and this thread helped me clear up some issues for the same.
Incidentally google returns this thread among the top 10 when i search for tomcat 5.5 connection pooling.
There are some unexplained questions here (regarding global connection pooling) and since I was able to set that up too, this may, in the future, benefit anybody who faces similar issues.
Setting Up Global Connection Pooling
Add this piece of code to server.xml under the server element

maybe the performance of App server pool is better than the JDBC pool,
for you don't know wether the implementation of the JDBC interface is good or bad.

We are getting this error when we try to get a connection from the
pool for a Tx Data Source. We are successfully getting connections
from a (non-Tx) Data Source.

at weblogic.jdbc.common.internal.RmiDataSource.getConnection(RmiDataSource.java:127)
We have added the DB user as a user in the realm, which usually does

JSQLConnect type 2 driver for SQL Server, and we are running on
Solaris. The scenario works fine using Oracle Thin driver on Windows.

I am using the Oracle database 8.1.7.
I have configured my connection pool, datasource and JNDI in weblogic.
In my java program i have the following code to retrieve the connection.

Is there any way that i can get rid of those ht.put statements or any other way to solve the problem.

there are 2 ways:
url must be: jdbc:weblogic:pool[:connectionPoolID]
or
jdbc:weblogic:jts[:connectionPoolID] (if you want to use jts with your JDBC connection.)

However, I think it is safer to configure and use DataSource to get connection.

Hi, All, I create the connection pool to Database, then call connPool->createConnetion("scoot","tiger") , it creates a new physical connection to database, not from connection pool. I check the busy number of connection in connection pool, it always 0.

What you are creating are virtual connections. They do logons using the already existing connections in the pool. The real connections from the pool are picked only before doing a round-trip and released immediately after completing the round-trip. You can see the busyConnetions higher than 1, only when you are using the connections concurrently.

Failed to obtain/create connection from connection pool after redeploy

I have a web application (.war) that uses a jdbc connection pool. The application works fine, however after I redeploy it using the administration console I get "Failed to obtain/create connection from connection pool [ Datavision_Pool ]. Reason : null" followed by "Error allocating connection : [Error in allocating a connection. Cause: null]" from javax.enterprise.resource.resourceadapter and I am forced to restart the instance. I am running Sun Java System Application Server 9.1 (build b58g-fcs)
using a connection pool to a Microsoft SQL 2000 database using inet software's JDBC drivers. I need to be able to redeploy applications without having to restart the instance. Any help is appreciated.

I have turned on some additional diagnostics and found out some answers and a work-around, but I think that there may be a bug in the way JDBC connection pool classes are loaded. The actual error was a null pointer in the JDBC driver class in the perpareStatement method. The only line in this method is "return factory.createPreparedStatement( this , sql );" and the only possible NPE would be if the factory was null, which should be impossible because it is a static variable and it is initialized when the class is loaded. The problem occurs because we deploy the JDBC driver .jar file within our .war file, for use when a client doesn't have or want to use connection pooling. Apparently, the connection pool must have picked up some of these classes and when the .war was redeployed, the reference to the factory was lost for existing connections (not sure how). If I remove the JDBC .jar file from the .war, it works, but that wasn't an ideal solution, the other way to get it to work was to change the sun-web.xml file to have <class-loader delegate="true">. We previously had it set to false in version 8.1 because of interference with a different version of the apache Tiles classes, which has now been addressed in version 9.1.
I still think there is an issue, because the connection pool should never use the application specific classloaders. Am I wrong to believe this?
