Getting a ResultSet from a stored function

Hi everybody.
I don't know if it's possible but i would like call a stored function with JDBC, and that function returns not a single value (like a VARCHAR2 or a NUMBER) but the "equivallent of a Java ResultSet".
With JDBC, i can execute a query like "SELECT * FROM Emp" and fetch a set of row in a ResultSet.
Instead of preparing and executing a SQL query from my Java source, i would preferred calling a stored function.
But i don't know which data type my function should return.
I would like to know if such a thing is possible.
Maybe somebody have an sample source code ...
Thanks.

You can get values OUT of the procedure by (lines with registerOutParameter):
cstmt = conn.prepareCall("{call hrx_get_empl_benefit_cost(?,?,?,?,?,?,?)}");
cstmt.setInt(1,employee.getId());
cstmt.setInt(2,plan.getId());
cstmt.setString(3,cvgAmtOrLevel);
cstmt.setString(4,effDate);
cstmt.registerOutParameter(5,Types.VARCHAR);
cstmt.registerOutParameter(6,Types.VARCHAR);
cstmt.registerOutParameter(7,Types.VARCHAR);
cstmt.execute();
I do not think it returns a resultSet like you are thinking. I guess you are talking about getting values out and not a cursor of records or several records of values.

  • How to get a resultset from Stored Procedures

    How to efficiently and portably get resultsets from Oracle stored procedures? Oracle does not seem to follow JDBC standards here. A standard way in Oracle is to use a ref cursor and call getObject() on CallableStatement. However, Oracle seems to get all the data in the resultset in getObject(), which is inefficient and leads to large memory usage when the resultset is large.
    Another way in Oracle is to use getCursor() on an OracleCallableStatement, which is efficient but not portable across different application servers. For example, in WebSphere, this OracleCallableStatement is not available if we want WebSphere to manager the datasource.
    Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Please email to [email protected]

    Oracle JDBC did not support return a result set, if you are using Oracle 9i, you can use pipeline function, then using the TABLE() function the get the row.
    Good Luck.

  • Why returning string from java stored function failed ?  HELP ME, PLEASE

    Hi everybody,
    I created java stored function: it's doing http post, parsing xml from http reply, and returning string result.
    Sometimes, it doesn't return any value. What can be a reason ?
    The high level procedure, has following form:
    class SBE {
    public static String call(String arg0) {
    SBE sbe=new SBE("d:\\oracle\\ora81\\network\\log\\SBE.log");
    String result=SBEParser.go(sbe.sendRequest(arg0, ""), sbe.logger);
    sbe.logger.log(result);
    sbe.logger.log("Finish SBE intetraction");
    return result;
    PLSQL wrapper has a simple form:
    create or replace package PG_SBE as
    function CALL(arg0 in varchar2) return varchar2;
    end;
    create or replace package body PG_SBE as
    function CALL(arg0 varchar2) return varchar2 as language java name 'SBE.call(java.lang.String) return java.lang.String';
    end;
    In log file ("d:\\oracle\\ora81\\network\\log\\SBE.log"), I can find message :
    "Finish SBE intetraction"
    but query:
    select pg_sbe.call("any argument") from dual;
    doesn't finish.
    What can be a reason ? What can I do to trace stage of convertion java string to varchar ?
    Please help me...

    Maybe your call is wrong... Shouldn't there be a "?" instead of "1"?
    Your code:
    String myquery = "begin :1 := jspTest; end;";
    I provide my (working) call from java as an example. Maybe it is of any help... :)

    Can u please check out my call sepc that i have written in pl/sql and plz let me know it there is any error in that.

  • Get variable values from a stored procedure

    I am using SQL 2008R2 and I want to replace a view inside a stored procedure with a new stored procedure to return multiple variable values. Currently I am using the code below to get values for 4 different variables.  I would rather get the 4 variables
    from a stored procedure (which returns all of these 4 values and more) but not sure how to do so.  Below is the code for getting the 4 variable values in my current sp.
    DECLARE @TotalCarb real;
    DECLARE @TotalPro real;
    DECLARE @TotalFat real;
    DECLARE @TotalLiquid real;
    SELECT @TotalCarb = ISNULL(TotCarb,0),
    @TotalPro = ISNULL(TotPro,0),
    @TotalFat = ISNULL(TotFat,0),
    @TotalLiquid = ISNULL(TotLiq,0)
    FROM dbo.vw_ActualFoodTotals
    WHERE (MealID = @MealID);

    You can replace the view with inline table valued user-defined function:
    http://www.sqlusa.com/bestpractices/training/scripts/userdefinedfunction/
    See example: SQL create  INLINE table-valued function like a parametrized view

  • ResultSet from Java Stored Procedures

    Hi,
    How do I obtain a resultset from a Java Stored Procedure?
    My stored procedure, deployed in Oracle8i, has Database package as sample.Have published setConnection() and getDept() methods.
    Code for Java Stored Procedure:
    package SPPackage;
    import java.sql.*;
    public class StoredProcApplication {
    protected static Connection connection = null;
    protected static Statement stmt = null;
    protected static ResultSet res = null;
    public static void setConnection() throws SQLException {
    connection = new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver().defaultConnection();
    public static void getDept(Object[] obj) throws SQLException {
    if (connection == null) {
    setConnection();
    if (stmt == null) {
    stmt = connection.createStatement();
    if (res == null) {
    res = stmt.executeQuery("select * from DEPT");
    obj[0] = res;
    Code for TesterApplication :
    package SPPackage;
    import java.sql.*;
    public class TesterApplication {
    private static final String URL = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@sandeep:1521:oracle8i";
    private static final String userId = "sandeep";
    private static final String password = "sandeep";
    private Connection connection;
    private CallableStatement stmt;
    private ResultSet res;
    public void setConnection() throws ClassNotFoundException,SQLException {
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
    connection = DriverManager.getConnection(URL,userId,password);
    public void getResultFromSP() throws SQLException {
    //prepare to call the stored procedure
    stmt = connection.prepareCall("{call sample.getDept(?)}");
    //register the OUT parameters
    stmt.registerOutParameter(1,Types.OTHER);
    //execute the query
    stmt.execute();
    ResultSet res = (ResultSet)stmt.getObject(1);
    while (res.next()) {
    System.out.print(res.getInt(1) + " | " );
    System.out.print(res.getString(2) + " | " );
    System.out.print(res.getString(3) + " \n " );
    public TesterApplication() throws SQLException,ClassNotFoundException {
    try {
    setConnection();
    getResultFromSP();
    } finally {
    if (res != null) { res.close(); res = null; }
    if (stmt != null) { stmt.close(); stmt = null; }
    if (connection != null) { connection.close(); connection = null; }
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    try {
    TesterApplication ta = new TesterApplication();
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.err.println("Error while executing stored procedure " + e.getMessage());
    e.printStackTrace();
    When I run the TesterApplication, I get the following exception :

    at oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleStatement.get_internal_type(Compiled Code)

    Also, if I want to execute the ResultSet in the stored proc itself, and return the values as Arrays of int[], and String[], how do I do it?By default the you can populate only int[0], String[0] , i.e. only one value!!!
    if my statement is unknown, i.e, it might return a combination of updates and resultsets, how do I go about processing the result?
    Please advise!!
    TIA

    Hi kkirk,
    I found the post you mentioned.Well it dates back to November 1999 - "Problem returning resultset or ARRAY from java stored proc" by Stuart Popejoy ([email protected]).Too bad, it is still not solved!!
    I am not very good at PL/SQL.However, it would still be helpful, if you could post the code here, or at my email address.
    Meanwhile, I was trying this during the week-end.There seems to be a glimmer of hope!!
    Let me know, if this makes sense :
    CallableStatement cs = connection.prepareCall("begin open ? for select * from dept; end");
    try {
    cs.registerOutParameter(1,OracleTypes.CURSOR);
    ResultSet res = ((OracleCallableStatement)cs).getCursor(1);
    while (res.next()) {
    //get the values
    } catch (Exception e) {
    e.printStacktrace();
    However, I am getting an exception trace
    Error while executing stored procedure Invalid column type: getLong
    java.sql.SQLException: Invalid column type: getLong
    at oracle.jdbc.dbaccess.DBError.check_error(Compiled Code)
    at oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleStatement.getLongValue(Compiled Code)
    Not quite sure why this is happening!!
    TIA,

    This comes up periodically. It just isn't possible using that type of approach. Probably the best you could do is the create an ADT (containing collections) and use that to pass a 'batch' of information.
    Hopefully this will get addressed in the next release of the database.

  • Return 2 values (string, number) multiple rows, from java stored function

    I would like to return 2 values (String, number prefered but String, String will work) from a java stored function.
    I was able to successfully return a varray of varchar2 values but I was wondering if it is possible to return 2 values by using a varray?
    Is it even possible? I tried using combinations of types which included a varray of objects (with 2 attributes) or a type as table of objects but I couldn't figure out how in my java code to set these values. Also what would my java function return type be and what Oracle type would map to it?
    Any help and examples or pointers would be great.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

    Thanks to all. I finally figured it out through all the pieces on the web.
    Here is what worked for me. First create 2 oracle types. One object type to represent the "columns" I will pass back:
    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE COST_OBJ AS OBJECT (COST_NAME NVARCHAR2(50), COST_VALUE number ) NOT FINAL
    note: make sure the "strings" are defined as NVARCHAR2 or Java will puke if it is just VARCHAR2.
    Then create a table type to hold your objects defined as following:
    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE COST_OBJ_TABLE is table OF COST_OBJ
    Then create the oracle stored function that is a wrapper to the java function:
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION get_Costs(Name VARCHAR2, evalDate VARCHAR2, fuelCodeID NUMBER) return COST_OBJ_TABLE
    is language java name
    'com.costs.storedProcedures.Cost.getCosts(java.lang.String, java.lang.String, int) return oracle.sql.ARRAY'
    Once that is done, Oracle is ready. The Java function looks something like this:
    public ARRAY getCosts(String name, String evalDate, int fuelCodeID) {
    DBAccess da = getDBAccess();
    // get a handle on the connection
    Connection conn = da.getConnection();
    // The stuff that will be returned should be as type object array
    // make it to the size of the number of fuelcomponents passed in
    Object[] returnStuff = new Object[3];
    // create the type of struct that is defined on the database
    StructDescriptor structDesc =
    StructDescriptor.createDescriptor("CY_UMAP.COST_OBJ", conn);
    for (int i = 0; i < returnStuff .size(); i++) {
    Object[] costValues = new Object[]{
         "This is object " + i,
         new Integer ( i ) };
    STRUCT cost_obj = new STRUCT(structDesc, conn, costValues);
    returnStuff[i] = cost_obj;
    ArrayDescriptor x_ad = ArrayDescriptor.createDescriptor (
    "CY_UMAP.COST_OBJ_TABLE", conn);
    ARRAY x_array = new ARRAY(x_ad, conn, returnStuff);
    return x_array;
    I hope this helps others.

  • Can you get values back from a stored procedure via OUTPUT parameters?

    Can you get values back from calling a stored procedure via OUTPUT parameters/variables? I call the SP via a SQL statement from a script either in a WF or DF.
    I thought I read some reference that DI could not get the values from OUTPUT parameters but I could not find it again (don't know if it is in any of the documentation or referred to in a forum.
    I did try a couple of tests but it did not reutrn any values via OUTPUT. But before I give up I thought I'd see if you could and maybe I needed to change something.

    This isn't exactly an answer to your question, but I'll point out that, given that you're resorting to a SQL script in the first place, there's no reason you can't also turn the output parameters into a regular result or record set. (The following uses T-SQL, although I think it's pretty generic.)
    declare @param1 int, param2 varchar(100), @return int;
    exec @return = proc @param1 = @param1 output, @param2 = @param2 output;
    select @param1 as param1, @param2 as param2;
    That is, to get from output parameters to a "regular" output from the SQL script isn't much of a leap...

  • How do I get return parameters from a stored procedure call?

    The Open SQL Statement has an option on the Advanced tab to specify a command type of 'stored procedure'. In addition to returning a recordset, a stored procedure can also return parameters (see http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q185/1/25.ASP for info on doing this with ADO). Is it possible to get those return parameters with TestStand? In particular, I want to be able to get error codes back from the stored procedure in case it fails (maybe there is another way).

    The Open SQL Statement step type does not fully support stored procedures. If the procedure returns a record set than you can fetch the values as you would a SELECT statement. Stored procedures require you to setup the parameters before the call and this is not yet supported. Bob, in his answer, made a reference to the Statements tab and I think that he was talking about the Database Logging feature in TS 2.0.
    If the stored procedure is returning a return value, it may return as a single column, single row recordset which can be fetched as you normally do a record set.

  • How to return custJava Object from Java Stored Function/Procedure to Java Application

    I WILL PAY $100 FOR SOLUTION.
    Oracle JDBC documentation gives step by step on how to return Oracle Type Object to Java Application. No question here.
    But is it possible to create Java Stored Function [getMyClass() ] which returns CUSTOM Java based object [MyClass] to Java application like:
    //java stored function
    class Foo
    public static MyClass getMyClass()
    return new MyClass();
    //java class I want to return to Java
    class MyClass
    public String getGreetings(String name)
    return "Hello " + name;
    I tried to do it using intermittent Oracle
    Type Object and OracleConnection map to make binding between Java->Oracle->Java. I could
    not get throgh meaningless run time ORA Errors. Any kind of help would be greatly
    appreciated. If you know the answer please
    post it or e-mail [email protected]

    You don't say which version of the database you are on. There's an interesting looking article on OTN on handling CLOBs in JDBC in 10g. It may well be useful for earlier versions too (but no guarantees).

  • How can i get currency values from flatfile to function module

    Dear All,
               I have to take  currency values from flat file and i have to assign those flat file value to function module .
    Eg: "Convert_to_local_currency".  I need technical code how to calculate those amount in work area and how to assign those amount value function module.
              I need sample program for currency conversion from flat file to function module.  My requirement is based on flat file amount i have to calculate in work area and assign those work area to function module.
    With Regards,
    Baskaran

    Hi Satish or Baskaran,
    First conform in which format the flat file is present, as abhi mentioned if it is there in notepad
    try to use F.M GUI_UPLOAD as shown below...
    CALL FUNCTION 'GUI_UPLOAD'
      EXPORTING
    FILENAME = 'C:\Desktop\rpf1.TXT'
    TABLES
    DATA_TAB =  ITAB.
    Now loop at ITAB Into Work_area and press the respect currency fields which you want and in the same way
    if the file is in EXCEL format use F.M ALSM_EXCEL_TO_INTERNAL_TABLE
    CALL FUNCTION 'ALSM_EXCEL_TO_INTERNAL_TABLE'
        EXPORTING
          filename = P_FNAME
          i_begin_col = 1
          i_begin_row = 1
        TABLES
          intern = ITAB
    LOOP AT ITAB INTO WA.
    CALL FUNCTION 'CONVERT_TO_LOCAL_CURRENCY'
            EXPORTING
              foreign_currency = wa-waers
              local_currency   = wa-waers
               IMPORTING
              local_amount     = tvals-gross.
        ENDIF.
    endloop.
    And as mentioned loop the records into work area and process the currenct field which is present in the
    ITAB according to its field name. And make sure within the loop you call your function module.

    I have a very simple question:
    I would like to write a stored procedure (SP) that will return results in XML format (as a string). My tables in database are not of XML TYPE. But I need XML output.
    ie, SP will run like a typical SP but the only difference will be its output in XML.
    1) is it possible?
    2) if possible, how?
    Please, help
