Getting connection toa database in a thread

Hi
I need guidance on how to get connection to a database inside a thread.Let me explain in detail.
I am developing a chat application. As normal my chat server assigns each user an instance of a chathandler class which runs as a thread. The problem is that i need to connect to database inside this thread to implement some group wise logic in the broadcast method of chathandler thread.
Now for this can i create a connection object each time in the thread or can i use a common connection object ? If i go for the second method will it cause any concurrency issue ?
Thanks in advance

Hi
I need guidance on how to get connection to a
database inside a thread. What other way is there? You always get access to a database inside a thread.
Let me explain in detail.
I am developing a chat application. As normal my
chat server assigns each user an instance of a
chathandler class which runs as a thread. The
problem is that i need to connect to database inside
this thread to implement some group wise logic in
the broadcast method of chathandler thread. No, database connections are for persistence. Group wise logic belongs somewhere else.
Now for this can i create a connection object each
time in the thread Yes, for each database access. Create it, use it, close it. Use a connection pool to amortize the cost of opening a connection.
or can i use a common connection object ? If you're foolish you can. How scalable is an app with one connection?
If i go for the second method will it cause
any concurrency issue ?You'll have isolation and concurrency issues to worry about in any case.

  • Connecting to database in a thread class

    HI,
I am have a problem when trying to get a conneciton to a database. I am trying to create the connection in a class that extends Thread.
Everythign else is set up correctly, i have ran the same code from the main class of my project and it works fine, the problem occurs when I try to get the connection from the class spawned by the main class.
The exception thrown is an SQL exception: No suitable driver found, however the driver was loaded previously (no class not found exception was thrown when loading).
The only reason I can think of that coudl be causing a problem is the fact the class creating the connection extends thread and runs in the run method i.e. a different thread.
Does anybody know of any issues regarding threads and JDBC?
NOTE: I and using the COM.ibm.db2.jdbc.net.DB2Driver for connecting to DB2.
    Cheers :)

    Here is the output
    Driver loaded

         at baeauthserver.AuthProtocol.getPMConnection(AuthProtocol.java:66)
at baeauthserver.AuthServerThread.run(AuthServerThread.java:38)The program is a server daemon or service that listens for connections from a client. On connection the server spawns a "work" thread to deal with authorising the user and creating a database connection. I can make a connection in the main server class (i.e. the main thread) but as soon as I move this to the "work" class it seems to lose the driver.
I've just done some more tests and I can't even grab the driver as a driver object on the work thread so it's not just the getConnection method.
I'm initialising the driver in a static block in the main server program. I've moved it around to various constructors on both the main class and the work class to no avail.
It has me stumped so far :p
Thanks for the input though :)

  • How to connect one database in two threads?

    Dear All,
If anyone can tell me how to connect one database concurrently?
    I tried the following idea:
1.create a Hashtable to keep database objects(those databases have been opened)
2.Before openning(connecting) a database:first step is to check the hashtable.
If the the database object is in the hashtable, this object will be returned.
If the datatbase object is not in the hastable, open the database and store this opened database object into the hashtable.
I failed the test of this implementation. My test is:Create two threads (extend java Thread class). In each of these two threads, try to open the same database.Just like the following:
    MyThread thread1 = new MyThread();
    MyThread thread2 = new MyThread();
    thread1.start();
    thread2.start();
I guessed the database object in the hashtable would be returned in the second thread.Unfortunatly, I only got an exception which meant the database couldn't be opened twice. It looks like the second thread happened before the opened database object stored into the hashtable.
I cannot figure out if my design is wrong or my test application is wrong.
    I really appriatiate your attentions!!!
    Lu

um not sure i follow exactly but in your code add the word synchronise to it and this means only 1 tread can access it at any 1 time.
So your could have a class which is a singleton so it only opens the dbase once and then all other access share your connection.
    so
    public class foo{
    foo INSTANCE = new foo();
    private foo(){} //private constructor
then all your methods use foo's internal dbase connection. Am i making sense

  • CC&B not able to connect the database

I have Welogic with Oracle CC&B 2.3.1 Installed on my local laptop.
I have local database also in my laptop (oracle 11g). While doing spl start I am able to access CC&B with weblogic using local database.
But when in configureEnv.cmd I changed database configuration to other database which is located on Unix box
My Laptop have 32-bit window 7.
In ConfigureEnv i gave all credentials of other database to which I am trying to connect. But I am facing below issue.

  • Connecting to database -- New Bie Pl help

    Hi all,
I have posted this question y'day & somebody asked me to post in this forum. So I thought I would. My question is :
How to I connect to database. I know some thing to get connected to database. If I am not wrong,
I will be needing a driver, datasource. If i am missing anything then please let me now.
I will be using jdbcodbc bridge driver which we get by default when we download jdk. But how do i create datasource. I want to use Tomcat as my server.
Please help me in this regard. I have heard of mySQL as free database. Is it true & how do I use it.

    Here's more help:
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/Books/javaprogramming/begjava2/ch19.pdf
What does Tomcat have to do with this? Is this for a J2EE app? If you're just using straight Java (no J2EE, JSP, etc), then you don't need Tomcat.
jdbcodbc is for talking to Microsoft Access databases from Java - if you are using MySQL, Oracle, Sybase, or most of the others, you will need a database specific driver module.

    anyone can help me !
    thanks!!!

Hi, yes, there are at least two known ways:
    1. if you happen to have a UCCX premium, you can create an HTTP application that serves up the prompt file,
    2. you can try to access the prompt file like this: http://<uccxip>:9080/prompts/dirname/promptfilename.wav

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: oracle.jdbc.oracledriverThe JAR file is not in your classpath. Depends on what JAR you are using (ojdbc14.jar, ojdbc5.jar, etc). Bottom line, it can't find the class for the driver due to the JAR not being in the classpath.

  • Could not get connections for 2 databases at the same time

Hi, I have a session bean which calls 2 entity beans in one method. The 2 entity
beans are located in different databases (different datasources and different
pools). When running, I got the following error:
    Couldn't get connection:
java.sql.SQLException: Connection has already been created in this tx context
for pool named iitga_jdbc. Illegal attempt to create connection from another pool:
    iitdbmap_jdbc
It seems WebLogic only allows one database connection within one method.
    Thanks,

    Hi Henry,
If you want two beans bound to different database, you need
to use XA pools with TXDataSources because in this case you
    have a distributed transaction.
Set up you pools using XA drivers and make sure you use
    TXDatasources.
If you tell us which database you use we may come up with
    sample pool configurations.

  • Getting exception while trying to connect mysql database

    hi
i am using mysql as database while connecting to database using jsp i am getting the following exception
    "java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:com.mysql.jdbc.Dr iver"
can any one tell wha tis the actual problem
    regards

If you've tens of applications on the server which
makes use of the same driver/JAR, then you can put
this JAR in the classpath of the server to save
WAR/EAR space. And about differing versions: I am not
used to do so. Otherwise just put the different/older
version in the classpath of the webapp and then give
it higher priority in the classloader. If you are using Enterprise Applications, disk space for the code should be your last concern. If you don't have enough of that for each of the applications to have their own space for the third party jars that they use, then you need a new server, as the one you have is not going to be able to handle the load anyway.
And as far as fiddling around with the classpath to avoid jarfile "collision" or incapability, good luck. The first time you add a new application all the others will stop working and you will have to spend two days reordering the classpath properly, so that they all work again. I know, because I have seen it happen, even though I suggested to them to do it the other way, they insisted on doing things the way you suggested and, like I said, as soon as they added the next application, the server was down for two days, until they got all of the classpath/(classloader priority) issues straightened out.

    Hello All,
I have installed 9i database and I gave path for oracle home as Oracle_path while installing. then I installed 9i dev suite, Installer forced me to use different Oracle home, so I gave Odev_path as path.
I have created server alias name from dev suite to Oracle database and I could connect to database from froms 9i. suddenly it started giving me the following exception when I try to connect database from forms 9i.
ORA-12705 invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified
could some one help toresolve the issue.
    Thanks in advance
    Raj

I have already seen this document and tried it out, but it didn't work. And I have tried out numerous other tips that I have found in different places on the web.
Is the client installation of any relevance? I notice that this user has a different installation from the one that I have, and that he amongst other things doesn't have sql plus installed.

it has worked perfectly for me and i dont c any reason that it should not do for u also.

  • Connecting to database via Dreamweaver

    Hi All
I am trying to build a site using asp.net and SQL Server via
Dreamweaver.!!!! To help me on my way I decided to build a tiny
test site just to establish the connections. However, try as I
might I can’t make a connection to a database and am now
rapidly loosing the will to live due to the quite unbelievable time
I have spent trying to sort this out. Now this post is my last best
    chance.
I am trying to connect to either of the databases that come
with the freebee SQL Server package (Is it called express or
something?). They are pubs and Northwind.
I am using Dreamweaver 8, XP Professional with the .Net
    framework v2.0 and IIS.
However, when testing the connection in Dreamweaver I get a
choice of two different error messages depending on my
computer’s mood (I don’t change ANYTHING) The first is
the beautifully succinct and entirely unhelpful “an
unidentified error has occurred”. The second reads:
    1) There is no testing server running on the server machine
    2) The testing server specified for this site does not map to
    the
    ttp://Localhost/RootFolder/_mmServerScripts/MMHTTPDB.asp URL,
Verify that the URL Prefix maps to the root of the site.
After more hours trawling the net for answers, than I care to
admit to I decided in desperation to try out the Dreamweaver
tutorial that deals with these things (Café Townsend) to see
if it offered any clues. However, when attempting to connect to the
database (tutorial.mdb) I get the same two error messages:
    “an unidentified error has occurred”.
    1) There is no testing server running on the server machine
    2) The testing server specified for this site does not map to
    the
    ttp://Localhost/MySampleApps/_mmServerScripts/MMHTTPDB.asp
URL, Verify that the URL Prefix maps to the root of the site. Again
    dependent on my computer’s mood.
I am convinced that I have all the necessary components in
place and my connection strings are correct (I am aware that the
path given in the Dreamweaver tutorial for Café Townsend is
incorrect and have altered the string accordingly).
I now strongly believe the problem is something to do with
the MMHTTPDB.asp file in the _mmServerScripts folder but could
    easily be wrong.
Does anyone know of a problem with Dreamweaver of this nature
or one that would result in my error message for either an Access
database or a SQL Server database?
I know Dreamweaver MX had a problem viewing database tables
whilst using .net and Adobe created a patch to fix the problem. Has
    Dreamweaver 8 any similar problems?
I’m sorry this post is a bit long but trust me I could
have made it three times as long if I included everything I have
    tried to resolve this!
Any help in the right direction would be appreciated more
    than you can imagine.
    Cheers

Sorry for jumping into the thread with a bit of an off topic question, but how do you find out what kind of a db the asp server is using? I've asked my company's web host a number of times for info/help in getting connected using Dreamweaver so I can redesign our site and I never hear back from them. It's a very specialized web hosting server set up for rubber stamp web sites. Looks like most of their customers use the online website design tool that they provide, but it is very limited in what it can do. Very limited.
They give me ftp access and I've changed what I can on the page, but with out access to the db it's hard to really change the look of the site.

  • Error connecting to database - java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: The Net

    Hello friends,
I know this question has been asked in a lot of other threads; but my problem is quite unique and that's why I'm starting a new thread...
When I try to access an Oracle 10g database through a Servlet code using a JDBC thin driver (both Tomcat and the database are running on Solaris 9), I get the following error:
"Error connecting to database - java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection"
However, there is another application running on the same server using the same database server (only the actual databases being used differ) and it is able to access the database without any issues. Both of these are absolutely similar applications and I couldn't think of any reasons why one would work and the other wouldn't. I thought they might be conflicting each other and tried running only the problematic application. But even then, I get the same error.
I know this might not be too relevant but to provide you some more information on the environment, the applications are running on separate Tomcat instances on the same server and they are connected to an Apache web server through Mod jk.
Any help in solving this problem is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

The 'application' that works is also a Tomcat application... It's exactly same as the problematic application in terms of the configuration and stuff... As for the typo errors, I copied the config info and pasted it... So pretty much it should be the same. And to add an additional note, I'm able to connect to the database from my localhost... I mean if I run the problematic application from localhost (without Apache and directly hitting Tomcat) I'm able to access the screens...
The second part of that (localhost) usually isn't all that useful. You know it is a connection failure so that means the code is running and technically successfully (since connection failure is a legitimate runtime error.)
You know it isn't a firewall issue because it connects from another app in tomcat. So it must be a configuration issue.
So something like one of the following.
    1. It isn't the same (we already know this but this particular item means that it is not in fact exactly the same because you deliberately or accidently modified it.)
    2. It isn't pulling the right config. Maybe you aren't packaging it, maybe it is buffered on the server and it is using that rather than what you think it is.
    3. Java code is referring to the wrong name.
Do this, change the configuration so it points to a server that does not exist. Repack, redeploy. If the error is the same (no diff) then you know that it is not running the code that you think it is. If it does change then you know that it can only be 1.
