  • Getting data into an applet

    I am creating an applet to draw graphs.
    I have only made standalone applets before.
    My data will come from a database.
    The user will have the data selected for them, when they select the applet page, the data to be drawn will already have been selected.
    i.e. I only need to give data across in the initialisation stage of the applet.
    What is the standard way to get data into an applet?
    By a giving a file path, by direct contact with the DB, with direct contact with another servlet or by giving the data in the HTML page the Applet is contained in.
    (The data will come from the same server as the applet)
    Maybe somone can point me to a tutorial on this?

    I am currently developing some graph applets, too. At first I implemented direct database access via JDBC, but found out, that this ain't suitable, because you can get in serious trouble with customers who don't want to open database tcp ports in their internal firewall system which - from a security point of view - is a good decision.
    So I gathered information about other methods to get data across the network. RMI needs own ports just like JDBC. Direct access to port 80 would be a good, so one could use Java's network capabilities. But this needs lots of coding on both ends (server and client-applet) and so takes time and is error prone.
    Using SOAP leads to fat applets and so I gave XML-RPC a try. In my case I have an XML-RPC server written in PHP (using the PEAR module see: http://pear.php.net ) and in my applet I use the XML-RPC library from the Apache Group (see: http://ws.apache.org/xmlrpc/ ). This works just fine!
    Pros:
    - small library code in applet (less than 200 KB)
    - only needs one network port. standard is 80 (http) which is almost everywhere available
    - applet code is independent from server code and architecture, as almost every language has some XML-RPC module (other than RMI being a Java-only solution)
    - free of charge & open source
    - reliable
    Cons:
    - based on XML it can slow down things a bit when lots of data has to be sent over a slow network link - but that's more of a general problem in network application development
    - other than SOAP/RMI you can not transmit/access whole objects but only data of primitive types (int, boolean, string, ..), so you have to wrap and unwrap your data
    By now I am very pleased with the decision I made earlier this year. :)

  • How to get data out of XML?

    Hi,All.
    I am running SAX (JAXP1.01) in Applet to process XML file. My question is how to get data out of xml format according to the field name (@age,@rank etc)
    and write into string buffer seperated by comma.
    Should I use SAX or DOM? (file size is big)

    For big files use SAX: quicker and less memory usage.
    The xerces parser from Apache has some examples. Basically what you do is scan the XML, remembering what tag you are and once you find the right tag, read the contents.

  • How to get data back from an action ?

    Hello,
    Would it be possible to get data back from an action (out of the question EO_MESSAGE & ET_FAILED_KEY )?
    For example we got an order with order positions and we need a "function" to e.g. count all positions. Because of Performance the function should not be processed each time the order is changed, read or a position is added. Instead the function should be processed only if it was called explicitly.
    Is it possible to create a kind of action which is actually counting all entries and export the number of them?
    How to mark a parameter in is_parameters as exporting?
    Is this just done by (naming-) convention?
    What is the preferred way to have “methods” with returning/exporting values?
    Regards,
    Lorenz

    Hello Lorenz,
    As you have already figured out , the Action API provides you with only the messages and failed keys if any.
    Post action execution , you can always execute a retrieve or retrive by association , to get the latest buffer snapshot , which of course would include the changes that you have made in your action.
    If you want to ensure that users have explict control on execution of your "fucntion", then of course , you should model it as an action on the BO.
    The parameter is_parameters is an IMPORTING parameter. You CANNOT use it to export anything back from the action. For importing ,  you can of course have any structure to use as the is_paramaters , which you model as the action parameter structure which modelling your BO action.
    From an external entity the only way to interact with a BO is by consuming the BO services and you are bound by the BOBF standard interfaces. Any and all data you require needs to be modelled as node attributes ( persistent or transient ) and fetched using the RETRIEVE, RETRIEVE_BY_ASSOCIATION or QUERY services.

  • How to get Date value from database and display them in a drop down list?

    Hello.
    In my Customers table, I have a column with Date data type. I want to create a form in JSP, where visitors can filter Customers list by year and month.
    All I know is this piece of SQL that is convert the date to the dd-mm-yyyy format:
    SELECT TO_CHAR(reg_date,'dd-mm-yyyy') from CustomersAny ideas of how this filtering possible? In my effort not to sound like a newbie wanting to be spoonfed, you can provide me link to external notes and resources, I'll really appreciate it.
    Thanks,

    Hi
    What part is your biggest problem?? I am not experienced in getting data out of a database, but the way to get a variable amount of data to show in a drop down menu, i have just messed around with for some time and heres how i solved it... In my app, what i needed was, a initial empty drop down list, and then using input from a text-field, users could add elements to a Vector that was passed to a JComboBox. Heres how.
    package jcombobox;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.Vector;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Main extends JApplet implements ActionListener {
        private Vector<SomeClass> list = new Vector<SomeClass>();
        private JComboBox dropDownList = new JComboBox(list);
        private JButton addButton = new JButton("add");
        private JButton remove = new JButton("remove");
        private JTextField input = new JTextField(10);
        private JPanel buttons = new JPanel();
        public Main() {
            addButton.addActionListener(this);
            remove.addActionListener(this);
            input.addActionListener(this);
            buttons.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
            buttons.add(addButton);
            buttons.add(remove);
            add(dropDownList, "North");
            add(input, "Center");
            add(buttons, "South");
        public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
            if (e.getSource() == addButton) {
                list.addElement(new SomeClass(input.getText()));
                input.setText("");
            } else if (e.getSource() == remove) {
                int selected = dropDownList.getSelectedIndex();
                dropDownList.removeItemAt(selected);
        public void init(String[] args) {
            setSize(400,300);
            getContentPane().setLayout(new BorderLayout());
            getContentPane().add(new Main());
    }And that "SomeClass" is show here
    package jcombobox;
    public class SomeClass {
        private String text;
        public SomeClass(String input) {
            text = input;
        public String toString() {
            return text;
    }One of the things i struggled a lot with was to get the dropdown menu to show some usefull result. If the list just contains class references it will show the memory code that points to that class. Thats where the toString cones in handy. But it took me some time to figure that one out, a laugh here is welcome as it should have been obvious :-)
    When the app is as simple as this one, using a <String> vector would have been easier, but this is just to demonstrate how to place classes in a vector and get some usefull info out of it, hope this answered some of your question :-)
    The layout might have been easier to write, than using the toppanel created by the JApplet and then the two additional JPanels, but it was just a small app brewed together in 15 minutes. Please comments on my faults, so that i can learn of it.
    If you need any of the code specified more, please let me know. Ill be glad to,

    Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media.  You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else.  As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
    You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC.  Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.

  • Why so much code getting data out of DB & into web services

    I am new to Java and I am experimenting with web services.
    I am trying to get data out of a database and into a web service
    This is the code I had to build just to get a little bit of data out of a DB and into a web service.
    // Open a database connection and statement.
    Class.forName("COM.ibm.db2.jdbc.app.DB2Driver").newInstance();
    Connection dbConn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:db2:sample","myuser","mypass");
    Statement statement = dbConn.createStatement();
    // Build the message.
    SOAPMessageContext ctx = (SOAPMessageContext) messageContext;
    try {
    MessageFactory messageFactory = MessageFactory.newInstance();
    SOAPMessage m = messageFactory.createMessage();
    SOAPEnvelope env = m.getSOAPPart().getEnvelope();
    SOAPBody body = env.getBody();
    SOAPElement elem =
    body.addBodyElement(env.createName("ns1:getEmployees"));
    elem.addNamespaceDeclaration("ns1",
    "http://www.abc.com/SampleApplication/Employee.wsdl");
    elem.addNamespaceDeclaration("ns2",
    "http://www.abc.com/SampleApplication/Employee.xsd");
    SOAPElement elem1 = new SOAPElementImpl("Response", null, null);
    // Execute the query.
    String sql = "SELECT EMPNO, FIRSTNME, MIDINIT, LASTNAME, HIREDATE FROM EMPLOYEE";
    ResultSet result = statement.executeQuery(sql);
    Isn't there a way with less code to get data out and stick into a web service?

    I left the part of the code out that is bugging me - I was talking about all of the code to get the data into XML..
    here's the whole code..
    // Open a database connection and statement.
    Class.forName("COM.ibm.db2.jdbc.app.DB2Driver").newInstance();
    Connection dbConn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:db2:sample","myuser","mypass");
    Statement statement = dbConn.createStatement();
    // Build the message.
    SOAPMessageContext ctx = (SOAPMessageContext) messageContext;
    try {
    MessageFactory messageFactory = MessageFactory.newInstance();
    SOAPMessage m = messageFactory.createMessage();
    SOAPEnvelope env = m.getSOAPPart().getEnvelope();
    SOAPBody body = env.getBody();
    SOAPElement elem =
    body.addBodyElement(env.createName("ns1:getEmployees"));
    elem.addNamespaceDeclaration("ns1",
    "http://www.abc.com/SampleApplication/Employee.wsdl");
    elem.addNamespaceDeclaration("ns2",
    "http://www.abc.com/SampleApplication/Employee.xsd");
    SOAPElement elem1 = new SOAPElementImpl("Response", null, null);
    // Execute the query.
    String sql = "SELECT EMPNO, FIRSTNME, MIDINIT, LASTNAME, HIREDATE FROM EMPLOYEE";
    ResultSet result = statement.executeQuery(sql);
    SOAPElement employee = new SOAPElementImpl("Employees", "ns2", "http://www.abc.com/SampleApplication/Employee.xsd");
    employee.addChildElement("ns2:EMPNO").addTextNode(result.getString("EMPNO"));
    employee.addChildElement("ns2:FIRSTNME").addTextNode(result.getString("FIRSTNME"));
    employee.addChildElement("ns2:FIRSTNME").addTextNode(result.getString("MIDINIT"));
    employee.addChildElement("ns2:LASTNAME").addTextNode(result.getString("LASTNAME"));
    employee.addChildElement("ns2:FIRSTNME").addTextNode(result.getString("HIREDATE"));
    elem1.addChildElement(employee);
    elem.addChildElement(elem1);
    ctx.setMessage(m);
    dbConn.close();
    } catch (Throwable e) {
    weblogic.utils.Debug.say("(hbs):e " + e);
    e.printStackTrace(System.out);
    putting the data in the node seems excessive to me.
    thanks

  • Getting data out of Oracle to SQL Server 2005

    Hello,
    I am new in Oracle and I have this question.
    I need to transfer lots of data frequently at day from a large Oracle DB to a SQL Server 2005 Database.
    Could you tell me what tools (including PL/SQL) ORACLE offers to reach this goal?
    *.Dat files are still a way to perform this job or other method more performance (quickly and efficiently) are available?
    Using MS SSIS is better ?
    Thank for your help

    I've done getting data out of Oracle to MS Access DB using heterogenous servicing.I hope that that would be the best way for your case too..

    Hi,
    You can get it from "User" or "Shop" business object.
    Try to get User or Shop Business Object as shown below.
    BusinessObjectManager bom = (BusinessObjectManager) userSessionData.getBOM(BusinessObjectManager.ISACORE_BOM);
    User user = bom.getUser();
    char decimalNotation = user.getDecimalPointFormat().getGroupingSeparator();
    If you are seeing "1,234.00" then above code will return "."

  • User temp tables not getting cleaned out from tempdb?

    Im seeing what looks like temp tables that are hanging around in tempdb and not getting cleaned out.
    This is SQL 2008
    SELECT * FROM tempdb.sys.objects so WHERE name LIKE('#%') AND DATEDIFF(hour,so.create_date,GETDATE()) > 12
    Im seeing about 50 or so objects that get returned and they are user_table and some of them have create dates of several days in the past.  Now I know users do not run processes that take that long, so why are these objects still hanging around?
    TempDB gets reset after a server restart, but other than that, how long are these things going to hang around?

    A local temporary table scope exists only for the duration of a user session or the procedure that created the temporary table. When the user logs off or the procedure that created the table completes, the local temporary table is lost.
    You can check the below blog for more information

  • Applet + EJB (jBoss) - Error to get an EJB from Applet

    Hello? All
    Could anybody explain why i get an error here. There are an Applet, which should get an access to EJB which was deployed on JBOSS Server (version 4.2.2.GA). Fragment of my HTML page where I put an Applet:
    <applet code=J2EEApplClientPKG.MainApplet codebase=classes ARCHIVE = "jbossall-client.jar" width=600 height=300>
    </applet>
    Thank you for time you spend on this question.

    Hello, my first applet is in the jar, and I want to
    get it out.get it out you mean launch from an applet which would be
    applet code=AppletClassName.class
    archive="JarFileName.jar"
    width=width height=height>
    </applet>
    or unjar it out which would be
    jar -xvf JarFileName.jar
    There is no plug-in installed here either, so I want
    THE LATEST VERSION to be uploaded from sun
    automatically.
    My book suggested something like the code below, but
    the plug-in version must be an oldie.
    Please help!
