Getting my hands on var/methods of outer classes

Hello,
I am learning java these days (at school) and i ran into a problem having an action listener as a inner class, how do i get access to methods and variables of the outer class from the inner class ??
for instance, this is my Outer class's constructor:
     public GBLEditor() {
          super("GridBagLayout Editor");
          ToolBar toolBar = new ToolBar();
          setJMenuBar(new MainMenuBar());
          getContentPane().add(toolBar, "North");
          Table tbl = new Table();
          getContentPane().add(new JScrollPane(tbl), "Center");
          getContentPane().add(new StatusPanel(), "South");
          MenuToolBarActionListener actionListener = new MenuToolBarActionListener();
          toolBar.getNewButton().addActionListener(actionListener);
          toolBar.getOpenButton().addActionListener(actionListener);
          toolBar.getSaveButton().addActionListener(actionListener);
          toolBar.getGenerateButton().addActionListener(actionListener);
          toolBar.getNewRowButton().addActionListener(actionListener);
          toolBar.getUpRowButton().addActionListener(actionListener);
          toolBar.getDownRowButton().addActionListener(actionListener);
          toolBar.getHelpButton().addActionListener(actionListener);
          setSize(770,300);
          setVisible(true);
So if the button newRowButton is pressed in my toolbar, i need to access the tbl object's method getTableModel() from inside the inner class below (as far as i can see now)
And this is my inner class:
class MenuToolBarActionListener implements ActionListener {
          public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
any ideas?

Now your toolBar is local constructor's variable.
Just declare it outside the constructor and you'll have access to it from methods of inner class.
Something like this:
public class GBLEditor extends ... {
    private Table tbl;
    public GBLEditor() {
        tbl = new Table();
    class MenuToolBarActionListener implements ActionListener {
        public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
           tbl.getTableModel();
}

  • "Open method of Workbooks class failed" when opening Excel file via Internet Explorer

    (apologies, I posted this first to the general Office 2010 forum, but then realized this was probably a better spot to post)
    We have an Excel COM add-in installed on users' PCs.  This add-in responds to workbook open events by opening a particular XLA file (also deployed to the PC) to make certain features available.  This process works flawlessly when Excel files are
    opened locally - but when a user attempts to open an Excel file from an IE link, we get the following error: "Open method of Workbooks class failed".  This is happening on the line that is trying to open the XLA file.  This only happens
    when launching an Excel link from IE - works fine in Chrome or Firefox.
    I have found several posts on this topic, but no solutions:
    1. This post (https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/office/en-US/73c96005-84af-4648-b103-32b677205be3/open-method-of-workbooks-class-failed)
    is the closest to our problem.  In this case, the "answer" was that the user may not have access to the 2nd workbook being opened.  But in our case, we're opening an XLA that is on the local machine, and I've confirmed that it is not
    corrupt and accessible (read & write, just in case!) to Everyone.
    2. This (very old) post (http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/open-method-workbooks-fails-excel-hosted-ie-t965608.html)
    seems similar, but is talking about opening Excel inside of IE.  This is not what we're doing - the link is supposed to (and does) open Excel outside of IE.  Interestingly, Excel.exe is being launched with the "-embedded" flag, even
    though it isn't running in the IE window.  When launching Excel by opening the file locally, Excel.exe is run with the "/dde" flag instead.  Clearly the "-embedded" mode is what is causing the problem.  I could change the
    links on the web page to use some JavaScript to open Excel differently... unfortunately, the links are actually generated by SharePoint (the Excel files are in a SP repository), so this is not really an option.
    3. This Microsoft KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/268016) talks about problems opening an XLA directly from IE... but this is the case of a link pointing
    directly to an XLA file, not opening a regular workbook that in turn opens an XLA, as is my case.  In fact, this article specifically points out in the "More Information" section that "End users do not normally open XLAs; instead they open
    an XLS that (if needed) loads one or more XLAs during startup." ==> precisely what I'm trying to do that is giving me the error!
    I've replicated the situation with a very simple COM add-in (created in VS2010 using VB.Net) and a very simple XLA file (does nothing, just pops up a message in auto_open).  For anyone wanting to try it out, here is the exact test case:
    1. In Excel, create a simple XLA file containing only the following code, and save it in C:\TEMP\dummy.xla:
    Sub Auto_Open()
    MsgBox "Auto Open fired"
    End Sub
    2. In Visual Studio, create a new Excel 2010 Add-In.  I created mine via Visual Basic, but I doubt the choice of language matters.  Place the following code in ThisAddin.vb:
    Public Class ThisAddIn
    Private Sub ThisAddIn_Startup(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Startup
    AddHandler Me.Application.WorkbookOpen, AddressOf Application_WorkbookOpen
    End Sub
    Private Sub ThisAddIn_Shutdown(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Shutdown
    End Sub
    Sub Application_WorkbookOpen(ByVal workbook As Excel.Workbook)
    On Error GoTo ErrHandler
    If (Not workbook.Name.Contains("dummy.xla")) Then
    MsgBox("Workbook open")
    Application.Workbooks.Open("C:\temp\dummy.xla")
    Application.Workbooks("dummy.xla").RunAutoMacros(Excel.XlRunAutoMacro.xlAutoOpen)
    End If
    Exit Sub
    ErrHandler:
    MsgBox(Err.Description)
    End Sub
    End Class
    3. Build & publish this add-in and install it on the same machine as the XLA created in step 1.
    4. Create and save an empty Excel workbook (I called mine WayneTest1.xlsx) - save it locally (on your desktop), and put a copy somewhere on your web server (I put mine directly in c:\inetpub).
    5. Create an HTML file with a link to that workbook, saving it to the same web server location - here is mine:
    <html>
    <body>
    <a href="WayneTest1.xlsx">Link to Excel file</a>
    </body>
    </html>
    6. Double click the workbook on your desktop (from step 4) - opens fine, I get the "workbook open" message, following by the "Auto Open fired" message.
    7. In Internet Explorer, navigate to the HTML file specified in step 5 and click on the link - when prompted, select "Open" - I get the "workbook open" message, following by the error message "Open method of Workbooks class failed".
    Here are a few things I've ruled out / tried so far:
    - Unchecked all the "Protected View" settings in Excel, made no difference
    - Unchecked all the "File block settings" in Excel, made no difference
    - Made sure dummy.xla was open for read & write to Everyone
    - Made sure the web page was in Trusted sites and set the security level to Low for those sites in IE
    - Tried making the local desktop file (step 6) readonly, made no difference (i.e. launching it locally still worked fine)
    - Tried using Excel 2013 - made no difference
    Any ideas / suggestions?

    It depends on how you are using your iPad.  If you are streaming videos or music, or playing interactive games which require internet access a lot, you may not get a full 9 hours from your battery.  In addition, have you closed unused apps?  To do so, double tap your home button to bring up the Task Bar (most recently used apps).  Hold your finger on any of the apps on the Task Bar until they all start to jiggle and you'll see a sign on the upper left corner of each app.  Tough the to fully close them.
    Finally, location services, push for mail and it's frequency can have a dramatic effect on battery usage.  Turning them off, as well as not using your screen at 100% will help reduce battery usage.

  • Calling a TextFields get method from another class as a String

    This is my first post so be kind....
    I'm trying to create a login screen with Java Studio Creator. The Login.jsp has a Text Field for both the username and password. JSC automatically created get and set methods for these.
    public class Login extends AbstractPageBean
    private TextField usernameTF = new TextField();
    public TextField getUsernameTF() {
    return usernameTF;
    public void setUsernameTF(TextField tf) {
    this.usernameTF = tf;
    private PasswordField passwordTF = new PasswordField();
    public PasswordField getPasswordTF() {
    return passwordTF;
    public void setPasswordTF(PasswordField pf) {
    this.passwordTF = pf;
    My problem is in trying to call these methods from another class and return the value as a string.
    Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    the method returns the textfield, so you just need to get its text
    import java.awt.*;
    class Testing
      public Testing()
        Login login = new Login();
        System.out.println(login.getUsernameTF().getText());//<----

    class Login
    private TextField usernameTF = new TextField("Joe Blow");
    public TextField getUsernameTF() {
        return usernameTF;

  • How can I get to know if a method is threads-safe?

    Hi, there.
    How can I get to know if a method is threads-safe?
    For example, in two different threads, is System.out.print() method safe or not?And where can I find the information with regard to this?
    thanks very much.

    System.out is a PrintStream object. None of the methods there use the synchronized modifier, but if you look in the source code, you will find out it is thread-safe, because it will use synchronized blocks whenever it writes some text.
    The source code is in the src.jar file which you can extract.
    I didn't find any comments about that PrintStream is thread-safe in the API.

  • Hw To Make Inner Class Distinguish Func Parameter And Outer Class Var

    i fail to make an inner class distinguish among function parameter and outer class variable.
    consider the following code:
    public class a {
         int var; // i want to access this one using inner class.
         public a(int var) {
              this.var = var;
              class b {
                   public void fun() {
                        var = 100;
    i get an error a.java:9: local variable var is accessed from within inner class; needs to be declared final.
    when i change the code to this:
    public class a {
         int var; // i want to access this one using inner class.
         public a() {
              class b {
                   public void fun() {
                        var = 100;
    it compiled no problem.it seems that inner class is accessing function parameter rather than outer class member.
    is there any syntax i can use to make me access the outer class member variable whithout renaming or removing the function parameter?
    thank you.

    a.this.var = 100; //Use this in the inner class.Amazing syntax -:)

  • Time to get my hands dirty?

    Hi all Digital Publishers
    I have been working with InDesign (basic layout and typesetting) for print for a few years now (freelance, part-time)!
    The stuff I have been doing is for school textbooks.
    It is now obvious that iPads, Kindles, laptops etc. will become ever increasing tools for education. I am therefore attempting to get "my hands dirty" and train myself in the use of Digital Publishing Suite. I have seen a couple of videos, but nothing one could call a training manual. Where would you suggest I look to a) get started and b) get up to speed?
    I have installed and updated Folio Builder in InDesign CS5 on a iMac 10.7.3. I have existing books in ID to convert, or should they be re-targeted to DPS?
    Your advice would be appreciated
    Lou

    And hang out here. Read the posts...plenty of tips.
    You should also consider now how you're going to handle CS6. If you move to 5.5 now you'll get CS6 for free and save money in the process since 5 to 6 is more expensive than 5.5 to 6.
    Another choice would be Creative Cloud at just $30/month for the first year with all the single edition apps you can create.

  • 60 Second Delays in Client Getting Entity Bean (after finder method)

    I am running WLS5.1 with SP10. I have a stateless EJB that gets a
    read-write BMP entity EJB. My test client that executes the stateless
    session bean periodically encounters long delays (60 seconds or more)
    when acquiring the entity bean using its finder method. Logging shows
    the finder method is executing properly, and typically takes 180 ms to
    locate the entity bean; however, from the stateless session beans side,
    it appears to take 60 seconds. The test client is only a single thread,
    so I know the pool is not depleted, or anything like that. Something
    appears to be going haywire with the container.
    Does anybody have an idea what might be going on?
    Thanks.
    Greg

    Hi Greg,
    On a whim, I tried the same test with the thin driver, and the same
    delay occurred. This time, instead of a rollback being at the top ofthe
    thread dump stack trace, it was in some other Oracle call, with the
    top of the stack trace being a socketreader.are you using MTS? Is the db-server a SMP-box? Which exact patch level
    does your Oracle instance have? If yes, can you try to force a dedicated
    server connection and see if the problem disappears? I guess for an OCI
    connection you will have to edit tnsnames.ora, for a
    thin-driver-connection you would have to modify the connect string to
    something like this:
    jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOS
    T=<dnsname>)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=<your
    sid>)(SERVER=DEDICATED))))
    There is a bug in 8.1.6.0 which is supposed to be fixed in 8.1.6.3, but
    I can still reproduce it in 9i :-(. It makes the MTS-dispatcher hang for
    60 seconds if you have an SMP box with low load, so maybe this could be
    your problem.

    Subject: Re: 60 Second Delays in Client Getting Entity Bean (after
    finder method)
    My client has been using OCI in production and development
    with JTS for
    over a year now without a problem. We went to OCI because
    there was some
    other problem with the thin driver. I'm not sure what the
    problem was,
    but Oracle acknowledged it, but said it wouldn't be corrected until
    Oracle 9i came out. We're still using 8.1.6, so from what I'm
    told, we
    don't use the thin driver.
    On a whim, I tried the same test with the thin driver, and the same
    delay occurred. This time, instead of a rollback being at the
    top of the
    thread dump stack trace, it was in some other Oracle call, with the
    top of the stack trace being a socketreader.
    Somebody else suggested that there may be a problem with
    transactions.
    Does this ring a bell? Again, I have a stateless session bean
    invoking a
    read-write entity bean, invoking a read-only entity bean. From
    everything I read, including weblogic docs, I should just rely on my
    deployment descriptor to control transactions and stay away from JTA.
    Hi Greg,
    I remeber long ago there were an issue with jts/oci driver combination
    when the connections were opened but never used...
    Buy the way, are there any specific reasons to use OCI instead of
    thin driver?

    I know. That's what I don't get. BTW Slava, I am using the
    latest OCI
    driver; thanks for the suggestion. I tried tweaking some of the Solaris
    kernel settings as relates to TCP, but that didn't clear up the problem
    either; however, it did change the frequency. Modifying the retransmit
    settings (very small values, sub 1.5 seconds) seemed to make it occur
    less frequently.
    It seems like its time for me to contact BEA Support and see what they
    can turn up. Thanks for the suggestions. If anybody else has an idea,
    let me know. I'm betting this is a simple, stupid config problem. I'll
    post back here when I find out what's up.
    But for some reason WebLogic code called the rollback:

    It's interesting to note these problems are occurring on

    Also, I

    This being the case, why would an Oracle rollback be

    I have a class that extends AbstractElementVisitor6<String, VisitorContext>
    In visitExecutable() I do something like this...
    try {
        // processingMethod is a member variable of the visitor
        processingMethod = true;
        MyAnnotation foo = e.getAnnotation(MyAnnotation.class);
        if (foo != null) {
            List<? extends VariableElement> parameters = e.getParameters();
            for (Element enclosee : parameters) {
                enclosee.accept(this, context);
            // do other stuff
            return null;
        return null;
    } finally {
        processingMethod = false;
    }I then end up in visitVariable(VariableElement ve, P). Which is good.
    However, I have been running in circles for at least a day now in the javadoc, trying to figure out how to get from a VariableElement to knowing what the class of the parameter is. I have figured out a way (correct or not) of knowing if it's a primitive type...
    ve.asType() instanceof PrimitiveType But I'm stuck on figuring out what the class of the thing is. The closest thing I can see is if I can somehow turn the VariableElement into a TypeElement, I can use getQualifiedName(), but I'm haven't found that, and I'm not sure if that's the right answer either.
    Here's the pseudocode of visitVariable...
    public String visitVariable(VariableElement e, VisitorContext context) {
        if(processingMethod) {
            // if it's a primitive type - OK
            //  do the right thing
            // else
            //   figure out what the class of e is   HELP!
            //   do the right thing
            return null;
    }In summary...
    How do I get the class of a method parameter from a VariableElement?
    Thanks

    When would this not be possible? Intersections types. See [JLS 3rd 4.9|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/third_edition/html/typesValues.html#4.9] Specifically
    "It is not possible to write an intersection type directly as part of a program; no syntax supports this."
    Also, I'm curious about the string representation in the first place. I assume there's not direct handout of class objects because we're in the compiler and can't assume that a type is a valid "thing" yet? e.g. it may not have been compiled yetCorrect.
    I was just thinking about how to represent the information, when it occurred to me that I probably ought to just reuse type mirrors and/or elements. Would you recommend this strategy? This is an interesting area of writing annotation processors. In order to apply any (what we call) extra-lingustic constraints and generate error messages when someone breaks the rules, you normally need the elements and types in order to make assertions about types being correct etc. I normally do this in the data collection phase, and don't collect any data for uses that are erroneous. I haven't tried doing the error checking after the collection phase.
    When you are generating the source code, (after all the data is collected) all you need is CharSequences (normally Strings). In fact extracting those from elements and types at the point that is writing the source file can make the code more complex than it needs to be, so I prefer to just have everything in Strings at this point. It makes the code that is generating code a little easier to understand. I often build an inner class to hold all the strings (in fields or in collections as appropriate) which I have collected from each annotated element, so there is some structure there.
    Are there any examples or other advice out there for doing this that you can point to?There are a few examples. Check out the [hickory project on java.net|https://hickory.dev.java.net/] You might find some useful tools there to assist writing your processor (such as prisms ) and [writing you unit tests|https://hickory.dev.java.net/nonav/apidocs/index.html?net/java/dev/hickory/testing/Compilation.html] . Hickory's unit tests include several examples of annotation processors, [this one|https://hickory.dev.java.net/source/browse/hickory/trunk/code/test/net/java/dev/hickory/incremental/ServiceProviderProcessor.java?rev=22&view=markup] illustrates the points I am making, and there are also some in code samples in the javadoc, for example [the same thing again |https://hickory.dev.java.net/nonav/apidocs/index.html?net/java/dev/hickory/incremental/StateSaver.html].

    I am so sorry for you and your situation. Were you using iCloud photostream?
    Otherwise I do not see any chance for your precious photos.
    Congrats anyway on the little darling!

    Would Like to Get Report of Daily Emails In and Out from Members to a DL
    Exchange version : 2007
    I am the supervisor for the group and want to quantify this information. I do not need to see the content, just quantity
    is it possible ?

    Well, distribution groups don't really have a concept of "in" or "out". They only serve to distribute messages sent to them -- unless you're asking to know who was a member of the distribution group at the time a message was sent to the DL.
    Message tracking logs hold the information you want, though. You'd have to look for EXPAND events that reference the distribution group and take the sender's e-mail address from that event. If the DL is a simple one that's not a member of any other groups
    you could also look for RECEIVE events sent to the e-mail address of the group and get the sender's name from that event.
    You can use Powershell extract the rows of data from the logs, but you'll have to write the code to get the data out of those rows and into a format you want. Perhaps LogParser could be useful in place of Powershell?
