Getting rid of memory hogs

I opened up my activity monitor on my new mac, and was surprised to see about ten proceses I had never heard of going on and eating up gigs of virtual memory, and some RAM. They had names like applespell.servce, atsserver, login window, system uiserver, user event agent, launchd, and pboard. Spotlight is also taking up memory despite disabling it. I am not sure if I stopped the indexing as well, but I'll post again for that issue.
Can I turn any of these off or are they essential? Are they not really a big draw?

I'd probably leave them alone. On a new computer, Spotlight has to index the HD at first...it takes a while and takes a lot of CPU/RAM.
The only memory problem I've experienced is with Firefox. It would take up WAY to much RAM. When I upgraded to Leopard, I just stayed with Safari and got rid of FF>

Some, possibly, but shouldn't be a problem.

Much of it is OSX and other things needed to run your Mac.
See The Storage Display for an explanation, and don't miss the link to Where did my Disk Space go?

and the 14 gb "other" ???? wht is it???
How to get rid of it ????
Have iPhone 5  with iOS 7.02

    Thank you,
This is what I did, after your suggestion:
    Backup iPhone in iTunes
in iPhone>Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and Settings
in iTunes> Restore iPhone with previous Backup (point 1)
There is no need to reset the iPhone with iTunes and no need to manually resync apps and content.
You will have your "new" iPhone with all your apps, settings and media just like before
with only a mere 500 mb (0,5gb) of "other" memory.
    Thanks again for tip

  • HT204120 Iphone shows 96 photos, sync memory show 1130 photos how do I find out what they are and get rid of them

iphone shows 96 photos, how do i find what is using my memory for photos and get rid of them

You're looking in the wrong place.  The "96 photos" are in iPhoto on your Mac and are being synced to your phone.  This doesn't include all those taken on the phone.
To see the total number of photos on your phone:
    Settings > General > About > Photos >
To see how much memory photos are using:
    Settings > General > Usage > Storage > Manage Storage >Photos & Camera
    To select what to delete:
For photos taken on the phone:  Photos > select photo you want to delete > trashcan on bottom.  Note that deleted photos are stored in the Recently Deleted album for 30 days.  To delete them immediately, select them again from that album > delete or select Delete All
For photos synced to your phone from your computer, deselect them in iTunes and sync again.  They can't be deleted directly on the phone.

  • Memory used by  "other" grows  to 1,3GB : how do I get rid of it

    Hi ,
memory used by  "other" grows  to 1,3GB : how do I get rid of it ? Where does ist come from ?
soms say it will reappear some days after Restoring......
    Iphone 4 (no JB)
    IOS 6.0.1
    "32"GB Memory
    26,4GB Music (selected)
    0,14GB Photo
    0,22GB Apps
    1,3GB  Other
    0,44GB free!
No Mails , just 2 Calendars (not more than 30 days back),
Iphone about 1 week go after Update to 6.0.1 ( took more than 1 hour... )
Using PWsafe APP : not restoring from an older Backup  might  lead to loss of PW-Safe contents?
    Who can help?
    Thanks
    P.M.

I hope Apple can fix the problem somehow ....... I just restored my Iphone again:
Pic no1 : Iphone restored  with IOS  before!  contents are restored
Pic no2 : after all contents  ( Apps & Music) have been restored
I have found another thread concerning "other" memory : but  if I restore without media contents and apps my PW-Safe information might get lost ....and the problem will still return......
    Any Ideas ? maybe iExplorer?

  • Getting rid of  JFrame (big memory leak)

    Hi,
I have an app that has a main frame with a button. When you press the button another JFrame is created. When you close this JFrame it is not garbage collected becauses references to it are held by some swing internals and also, it appears, by all listeners that have been registered. Is there any way of getting rid of these references so I can recover the memory? This is causing a huge memory leak and the app eventually dies......
    Thanks
    Simon

Don't know if you are using kunststoff laf and a 1.4 jvm, but kunststoff has a mem leak when using toolbars.
I sent a mail in August 2002 to them, but it seems no bugfix release is coming out.
Copy of the relevant part of the mail:
While looking for a memory leak (JFrames not being garbage collected), I noticed a bug in the kunststoff 2.0.1 laf:
The KunststoffToolBarUI class is a singleton, but the base MetalToolBarUI class is not (at least in jdk 1.4, I haven't looked at earlier versions).
The MetalToolBarUI has several hashtables containing ui components, and the static reference in KunststoffToolBarUI is preventing the components in this hashtables from being garbage collected.
After changing KunststoffToolBarUI.createUi to always return a new instance of KunststoffToolBarUI the memory leak disappears and the JFrame's are garbage collected.

  • Lifeblog fills phone memory - how to get rid of it...

I recently started running out of phone memory, and even after deleting some files it fills up again in a couple of days. I had thought the problem was Sports Tracker, but it turns out to be "Lifeblog".
I used x-plore to look at the 160MB C:/ drive, and there is a hidden Lifeblog folder. Within this there is a file called "TextIndex.db" which is no less than 105MB!
**bleep** is going on here? I've never enabled lifeblog, I am in no way interested in such an application, so what's it doing using all my phone memory?
Also more to the point, how do I get rid of it? There doesn't seem to be a way to uninstall it given it's built-in. Alternatively is there a way to disable whatever it thinks it's doing.
    Thanks for any help.

Ok I solved this but it wasn't easy - the only way to get rid of the oversized file and recover the phone was to re-flash the firmware.
The offending TextIndex.db is now 7K. Since I unchecked all the categories from LifeBlog I'm hoping it will stay that way.
This is a serious bug in LifeBlog that effectively bricks your phone, and in a way that's hard to detect unless you know how to look at hidden files/folders on the C: drive. I hope someone is looking into it.
