Getting Size of Variable...

I am trying to get the maximum length a variable can be in a PL/SQL procedure.
I do not hard code my datatypes, I am using database columns to do this for me. My columns do not change often but it is possible and can be done without warning. What I want to do is take a substring of the source column dynamically.
Source Column 32
Target Column 30
Variable_Name Targetcolumn%TYPE
Variable_Name := substr(Source Column, 1, MaxLengthOfTargetColumn);
I repeat that I do not want to hard code in the length of the target column into the substring. Is there any way to do this?
Thanks in Advance.

> Variable_Name := substr(Source Column, 1, MaxLengthOfTargetColumn);
Bad coding approach.
Why? 'cause there is no exception raised.
I (the caller) passes it a string. I expect the full string to be accepted and processed. This code silently chucks away a part of that and only processes and stores a part of the string I passed.
I do not believe this approach is acceptable. The caller must be notified when there is a problem. Code cannot simply ignore a problem (caused by parameters passed by the caller) and not inform the caller of that.

  • Chaining "Get Value of Variable" and "Run AppleScript" actions in Automator

    I'm attempting to access a variable I've set in Automator from within a "Run AppleScript Action". On occasion, generally when I start in a fresh new file, I can chain the "Get Value of Variable" action with the "Run AppleScript" action as you would expect.
    Most times, though, they will not chain together. I haven't specified that the "Run AppleScript" action should ignore input, but it behaves that way. I've tried everything I can think of, but I'm out of ideas.
    Am I going about this all wrong? (Thanks in advance for any suggestions!)

    The *Get Value of Variable* action is another quirky one. I'm not sure what causes it to fail, but sometimes putting another (dummy) action in between gets it to work. You can also access workflow variables directly from the Run AppleScript action, so you might also give that a try:
    <pre style="

    width: 680px;

    overflow: auto;"

    if result is false then error -128 -- cancel
    repeat with someVariable in theVariables
    set the end of the output to (get value of variable someVariable of front workflow)
    end repeat
    end if
    return output
    end run

  • How can I use evaluate to get the instance variable in customized tag

    1.
    At first , I create a class called bean,and declared several params in it and do not define any getter function for the param.
    class bean{
    String param = "test";
    SomeClass scObj = new SomeClass();
    2.
    The second ,I use
    request.setAttribute("beanObj",new bean());
    3.
    And then I wanna use the customized tag to show a text box , then initialize it's value.
    <salt:text name="param" value="beanObj.param">
    <salt:text name="obj" value="beanObj.scObj.func()">
    4.
    I tried the evaluator provided by JexlContext ,Struts, JSTL and it seems that if I do not define the getter for the variable ,I can not get the bean's instance variable's value.
    Expression e = ExpressionFactory.createExpression( value );
    JexlContext jc = JexlHelper.createContext();
    jc.getVars().put(strInitBeanName, request.getAttribute("beanObj"));
    Object obj = e.evaluate(jc);
    the result of the obj is null....
    Can anybody recommand some other evaluator can get the value of a instance variable from an object?

    do you have any other suggestion ? Nops, somebody else may have though. AFAIK, all lookups of the type
    beanName.propertyNameuse reflection on the getXXX() methods to access the property.
    Having said that, I guess you could write one though in a custom tag, using the same - reflection (you will ahve to rely on the java.lang.reflect.Field class quite heavily) - but that would be reinventing the wheel for most other functionality that you would have to include (like looking up the bean in scope etc)

  • How to get name of variable passed to method

    How can I get the name of the variable that's passed into a method, in the method?
    for instance: the following code prints an array to a text file, and includes the name of the array in the name of hte text file. So, to call it, I have to do this:
    printarray(myArray, "myArray")
    so that the text "myArray" gets passed in & used in teh fileNM output.
    This is inelegant, and I'd like to just call it like this:
    printarray(myArray)
    and have the method extract that name.
    void printarray(String printstuff[], String arrayname) throws Exception
        String fileNM = "arrayprint_" + arrayname +".txt";
        FileWriter printme = new FileWriter(fileNM);
        String newline = System.getProperty("line.separator");
            String tab = "\t";
        for (int i = 0; i<printstuff.length; i++)
            printme.write(i + tab + printstuff[i]  + newline);
        printme.close();
        } // end printarray

    Let me try to put this in different words and see if I convince you...
    I think you are getting confused between variable names that you use refer a variable within your class and "names" that you associate with a variable based on the data it holds.... In your example
    String[] myArray;here 'myArray' is the name of the reference to the variable printstuff[]. When you call the method
    printarray(myArray) a copy of this reference is passed to that method.
    But you also want to pass another variable that represents the description of the array (which you are referring to as the name). In this case one of the ways of doing this what you had pointed out which is
    printarray(myArray, "myArray");If you don't like this and think its inefficient you should do a bit of reading on the basics of what a variable is, what a reference to a variable etc. Alternativel you can define your own class that convinces you like
    public class MyArray
          private String[] myArray;
          private String myArrayName;
          public MyArray(String myArrayName, String[] myArray)
                      this.myArrayName=  myArrayName;
                      this.myArray = myArray;
          public String[] getArray()
                    return myArray;
          public String getName()
                      return myArrayName;

  • How to get system Environment variable?

    How to get system Environment variable without using jni?
    just like "JAVA_HOME" or "PATH"...
    Any reply is help to me!! :-)

    Thx for your reply...
    I get it!!!
    Read environment variables from an application
    Start the JVM with the "-D" switch to pass properties to the application and read them with the System.getProperty() method. SET myvar=Hello world
    SET myothervar=nothing
    java -Dmyvar="%myvar%" -Dmyothervar="%myothervar%" myClass
    then in myClass String myvar = System.getProperty("myvar");
    String myothervar = System.getProperty("myothervar");
    This is useful when using a JAVA program as a CGI.
    (DOS bat file acting as a CGI) java -DREQUEST_METHOD="%REQUEST_METHOD%"
    -DQUERY_STRING="%QUERY_STRING%"
    javaCGI
    If you don't know in advance, the name of the variable to be passed to the JVM, then there is no 100% Java way to retrieve them.
    NOTE: JDK1.5 provides a way to achieve this, see this HowTo.
    One approach (not the easiest one), is to use a JNI call to fetch the variables, see this HowTo.
    A more low-tech way, is to launch the appropriate call to the operating system and capture the output. The following snippet puts all environment variables in a Properties class and display the value the TEMP variable. import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class ReadEnv {
    public static Properties getEnvVars() throws Throwable {
    Process p = null;
    Properties envVars = new Properties();
    Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
    String OS = System.getProperty("os.name").toLowerCase();
    // System.out.println(OS);
    if (OS.indexOf("windows 9") > -1) {
    p = r.exec( "command.com /c set" );
    else if ( (OS.indexOf("nt") > -1)
    || (OS.indexOf("windows 2000") > -1 )
    || (OS.indexOf("windows xp") > -1) ) {
    // thanks to JuanFran for the xp fix!
    p = r.exec( "cmd.exe /c set" );
    else {
    // our last hope, we assume Unix (thanks to H. Ware for the fix)
    p = r.exec( "env" );
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader
    ( new InputStreamReader( p.getInputStream() ) );
    String line;
    while( (line = br.readLine()) != null ) {
    int idx = line.indexOf( '=' );
    String key = line.substring( 0, idx );
    String value = line.substring( idx+1 );
    envVars.setProperty( key, value );
    // System.out.println( key + " = " + value );
    return envVars;
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    try {
    Properties p = ReadEnv.getEnvVars();
    System.out.println("the current value of TEMP is : " +
    p.getProperty("TEMP"));
    catch (Throwable e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    Thanks to W.Rijnders for the W2K fix.
    An update from Van Ly :
    I found that, on Windows 2003 server, the property value for "os.name" is actually "windows 2003." So either that has to be added to the bunch of tests or just relax the comparison strings a bit: else if ( (OS.indexOf("nt") > -1)
    || (OS.indexOf("windows 2000") > -1 )
    || (OS.indexOf("windows 2003") > -1 ) // works but is quite specific to 2003
    || (OS.indexOf("windows xp") > -1) ) {
    else if ( (OS.indexOf("nt") > -1)
    || (OS.indexOf("windows 20") > -1 ) // probably is better since no other OS would return "windows" anyway
    || (OS.indexOf("windows xp") > -1) ) {
    I started with "windows 200" but thought "what the hell" and made it "windows 20" to lengthen its longivity. You could push it further and use "windows 2," I suppose. The only thing to watch out for is to not overlap with "windows 9."
    On Windows, pre-JDK 1.2 JVM has trouble reading the Output stream directly from the SET command, it never returns. Here 2 ways to bypass this behaviour.
    First, instead of calling directly the SET command, we use a BAT file, after the SET command we print a known string. Then, in Java, when we read this known string, we exit from loop. [env.bat]
    @set
    @echo **end
    [java]
    if (OS.indexOf("windows") > -1) {
    p = r.exec( "env.bat" );
    while( (line = br.readLine()) != null ) {
    if (line.indexOf("**end")>-1) break;
    int idx = line.indexOf( '=' );
    String key = line.substring( 0, idx );
    String value = line.substring( idx+1 );
    hash.put( key, value );
    System.out.println( key + " = " + value );
    The other solution is to send the result of the SET command to file and then read the file from Java. ...
    if (OS.indexOf("windows 9") > -1) {
    p = r.exec( "command.com /c set > envvar.txt" );
    else if ( (OS.indexOf("nt") > -1)
    || (OS.indexOf("windows 2000") > -1
    || (OS.indexOf("windows xp") > -1) ) {
    // thanks to JuanFran for the xp fix!
    p = r.exec( "cmd.exe /c set > envvar.txt" );
    // then read back the file
    Properties p = new Properties();
    p.load(new FileInputStream("envvar.txt"));
    Thanks to JP Daviau
    // UNIX
    public Properties getEnvironment() throws java.io.IOException {
    Properties env = new Properties();
    env.load(Runtime.getRuntime().exec("env").getInputStream());
    return env;
    Properties env = getEnvironment();
    String myEnvVar = env.get("MYENV_VAR");
    To read only one variable : // NT version , adaptation for other OS is left as an exercise...
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd.exe /c echo %MYVAR%");
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader
    ( new InputStreamReader( p.getInputStream() ) );
    String myvar = br.readLine();
    System.out.println(myvar);
    Java's System properties contains some useful informations about the environment, for example, the TEMP and PATH environment variables (on Windows). public class ShowSome {
    public static void main(String args[]){
    System.out.println("TEMP : " + System.getProperty("java.io.tmpdir"));
    System.out.println("PATH : " + System.getProperty("java.library.path"));
    System.out.println("CLASSPATH : " + System.getProperty("java.class.path"));
    System.out.println("SYSTEM DIR : " +
    System.getProperty("user.home")); // ex. c:\windows on Win9x system
    System.out.println("CURRENT DIR: " + System.getProperty("user.dir"));
    Here some tips from H. Ware about the PATH on different OS.
    PATH is not quite the same as library path. In unixes, they are completely different---the libraries typically have their own directories. System.out.println("the current value of PATH is: {" +
    p.getProperty("PATH")+"}");
    System.out.println("LIBPATH: {" +
    System.getProperty("java.library.path")+"}");
    gives the current value of PATH is:
    {/home/hware/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/xpg4/bin:/opt/SUNWspro/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:
    /usr/ucb:/bin:/usr/bin:/home/hware/linux-bin:/usr/openwin/bin/:/usr/games/:

  • How can I get size of fetched data size when run a SQL ?

    Hi,
    When I run a SQL how can I get fetched data size?
    regards,

    We can get it using some calculations:
    1. SQL%ROWCOUNT attribute will fetch you number of rows returned in a SQL statement.
    Problem-->Now you need to get the size of 1 row.
    Solution-->
    Step 1.We can get size of table from dba_segment data dictionary.
    Select block_size from dba_segemnts where segment name like '%YOURTABLE%';
    Step2 . Get count of rows in your table
    Select count(*) from YOUR_TABLE
    Step 3.
    Get size of 1 row--> Divide result in Step1 by result in Step 2.
    Required result--> multiple result in step3 with SQL%ROWCOUNT..

    I'm building a insert statement based on a view I have by building
    while stepping thru a bulk collect. I'm Concatentating my 4 varibles to
    create a final sql statment that I want to use for Execute Immediate.
    However when Concatentating the four variables the last variables for some
    strang reason null out the variable.
    While debugging I see all 4 variables populated ok, I played with changing the
    variables lengths to see if that was the issue but I still have the issue.
    Any idea why I would get "not a variable" when Concatentating the final variable?

    This could be an artifact of whatever front end program you're using to debug.
    If I were you, I'd try adding debug statements (via your custom debug log package if you have one or via dbms_output.put_line if you haven't - not forgetting to set serveroutput on first *{;-) ) to record what each value was. That should help you to pinpoint what the issue might be.

  • How to get BW-BPS variable value into Visual Basic?

    Hello,
    Scenario:
    Time characteristic 0FISCYEAR has a variable ZVFYEAR. In layout this time characteristic is defined as DATA COLUMN. When user changes VFYEAR variable’s value i want to get the value of variable into Visual Basic and to format header for table in the layout.
    How to get BW-BPS variable value into Visual Basic?
    Could you help me?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Arunas Stonys

    Hi,
    If i understand your requirments correctly ,you need to read the value of the Variable and Put it on the layout. Here is how  i would solve this,
    Read the value of the variable using an ABAP program.The logic for this would be to read the variable value and post it on the layout on a cell.You can do this by calling the ABAP program on opening the layout.this can be done using LB_EXIT_FM  T-code. Now using the  SAP delivered SAPAfterDataPut  macro, read the cell in which you have placed the variable values and assign it to the necessary values you want to on the layout.All this will be done before the layout opens.
    Hope this helps.
    regards

  • Is there any way to get windows environment variables like %USERNAME% with javascript?

    is there any way to get windows environment variables like %USERNAME% with javascript using Adobe 10 pro?

    There is a fair amount of Acrobat JavaScript and Acrobat knowledge need to sort all of this out.
    The identity object holds a lot of sedative information. First, upon installation of Acrobat, only the login name is available in the identity object and the end user of the application needs to complete the "Name", "email" and "Organization Name" in the application's preferences. These are the only fields that are available to Acrobat JavaScript identity object as corporation, email, loginName, and name.
    Using the instructions in The Acrobat JavaScript Console (Your best friend for developing Acrobat JavaScript) you can run the following script in the JS console to see the items of the identity object:
    for(i in identity) {
    console.println(i +": " + identity[i]);
    and the following will appear in the console:
    loginName: georgeK
    name: George Kaiser
    corporation: Example
    email: [email protected]
    true
    The documentation states you need to use a trusted function to access this data, but you can access it at startup of Acrobat/Reader and add the properties of the identity object to an array:
    // application variable to hold the properties of the identity object
    var MyIdentity = new Array();
    // loop through the properties of the identity object
    for (i in identity) {
    // place each property of the identity object into an element of the same name in the Identity array
    MyIdentity[i] = identity[i];
    console.println(i +": " + MyIdentity[i])
    You access the items with:
    var loginUser = MyIdentity[loginName];  // get the loginName property
    In the user application level JavaScript file. See Acrobat Help / User JavaScript Changes for 10.1.1 (Acrobat | Reader) for the location of the application level folder you need to use.
    I would change the name of the array used in this post so an untrusted user cannot get to your data. Some of this data can be used in hacking into a user's system.

  • Need help getting networked shared variables on compact fieldpoint to work

    I'm still a newbie and am trying to get Networked Shared Variables to pass from a VI running on a PC to a VI running on a Compact Fieldpoint. I created a VI that sends a message via a Networked Shared Variable and a VI that receives it. I have them both in the same project. If I run them both on the PC, it works, I can send a message string from the first VI to the Networked Shared Variable and read it in the second VI. I have the second VI turn the LED "A" on and the LED "B" off if I send the string "a", and turn the LED "B" on and the LED "A" off if I send the string "b", and turn them both off if I send anything else. It works as expected if both the VIs are running on the PC. The second VI also continuously blinks the LED "C" so I can verify that it's running.
    I "deployed" the second VI to the Compact Fieldpoint as follows:
    In Project I dragged the VI from My Computer (under Project: name.lvproj) down and put it under the Compact Fieldpoint name.
    I right clicked on Compact Fieldpoint name and verified it was set to "Connect".
    I right clicked on the second VI and selected "Deploy".
    I started both VIs with the "Run" arrow. At this point I know second VI is running since the LED "C" keeps blinking. But, when I try to send an "a" or "b" nothing happens, so the VI on the Compact Fieldpoint must not be receiving the messages in the Networked Shared Variable.
    I also right clicked on Compact Fieldpoint name and selected
    "Disconnect". The second VI continued to run since the LED "C" keeps
    blinking, but I still can't get messages to pass.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    I got this to work. I moved the library (.lvlib) containing the Networked Shared Variable to down under the Compact Fieldpoint name. Now it works.

  • Get all the variables declaration in a program

    Is there a possible way to get all the variables declarations ( name and type ) inside a java program and not only the fields that you can easily get with reflection mechanism but also local variables inside a method?

    local variables inside a method?Nope, you'd have to get inside the call stack for that and there's no easy mechanism for that.Even that wouldn't do it, since not all code is on the call stack at all times. There are ways to do it, using bytecode engineering, but I'm not going to get into that because if you don't already know how to do it, I doubt you have a problem that genuinely requires it.
    It's a bogus requirement anyway. Whatever you're trying to do, OP, it's doomed to failure. What are you trying to do? I mean, what were you doing that led to you thinking "If I knew what those local variable were, I'd manage it!"?
