Getting started help

Perhaps someone wouldn't mind helping with some simple questions....
I'd like to get started with Java Server Pages but I am finding the process absolutely bewildering.
At the moment I have a site running Jrun 3.1 and I use J2SE, so I think I will have my work cut out just to get started, though perhaps someone can enlighten me.
Jrun 3.1 doesn't even implement Servlet API 2.3 and whenever I hear talk of Java Server Faces I seem to hear J2EE. However I have no great wish to update Jrun with our server running smoothly (touch wood) and changing from J2SE to J2EE seems like yet another big change.
I had a look at changing to Tomcat, but again why do so when things are running smoothly as they are?
Ok, so I've been looking at Java Web Services pack, which seems to solve some of the problems and the blurb says:
"Note that the Java WSDP is an integrated toolkit that you can use to develop and deploy not only Web services, but also Web and XML-based applications".
But presumably I need a servlet container behind it and Jrun 3.1 is probably too old, is that right?
Ok, at this point perhaps I could leave my existing applications running happily in Jrun 3.1 and J2SE, install Tomcat and J2EE separately and run any new applications alongside in the new environment. I've got 1GB of memory, and then maybe one day I move over the old applications.
Perhaps somebody could give me some pointers, given my situation.
Thanks for your time.

JavaServer Faces requires an environment that supports at least Servlet 2.3 and JSP 1.2. It will not run on any server that supports Servlet 2.2 or earlier only. Any J2EE 1.3 or later app server meets these criteria, but it's not required (for JavaServer Faces) that you have a full J2EE server unless you need those facilities (such as EJBs) for your applications.
The Java Web Services Developer Pack includes Tomat 5, or you can use an existing Tomcat installation (must be 4.1 or 5.0). Tomcat is pretty easy to set up (especially if you just use it standalone, and not try to run it behind the Apache HTTPD server).

  • No "Getting Started" help file

I click under "help" "Getting Started with Garageband" but get errors that the "file doesn't exist or has been deleted." How do I get this to work. I've re-installed numerous times.

    I'm not sure.
After I clicked on the link, I saved a copy of the file (GarageBand Getting Started.pdf) to a folder I named "UserGuides", inside a folder I named "Software", inside the "Music" folder of the Apple Finder window.
When I click on the "Help" menu in GarageBand and select "GarageBand Getting Started", the file "GarageBand Getting Started.pdf" opens right up. I do not know whether it is there as a result of my downloading and saving it, or was there all along.
What happens when you click on the "Help" menu in GarageBand, and select "GarageBand Getting Started"?

  • Need "getting started" help...

    Hi everyone,
I'm fresh to Java3D and I've seen the tutorials and all. But I already know Jazz (Java 2D-based graphics engine), and I think it's much more heavy to get into Java 3D than it was to get to know Jazz...
Does anyone know any lightweight tutorials or other ways of easily getting started? What I wanna do is virtual worlds with objects moving around (simulations).
    Warm regards,
    Jez

The comment about knowing a 2d engine is like saying "I can walk but it is hard to rock climb" - both depend on you having legs, but just because you can do one it doesn't mean the other is equally easy. The fact is that 3d is hard. Java3d tries to make it easier for us, but sometimes the way it works can actually be harder to understand than the underlying maths it is building on, especially if you don't know where to look for stuff in the javadocs. When I was getting started in j3d I had exactly the same problem- I'm still sort of getting started but I have put together a tutorial on the stuff I have learned already, which doesn't expect you to really know much about j3d and might be the kind of thing you're after:

  • New Mac mini  - cannot get started - HELP please

    HI everybody
I am struggling to get started with my macmini. I have it attached to a cinema display and switched it on expecting to go through the start up procedure and registration which is usually so intuitive.
The screen shows a wireless mouse diagram indicating that I must insert batteries. Now I do use a wireless mighty mouse and I assumed that everything would talk to each other automatically. Is this where I am going wrong? I am certain that my mini comes with bluetooth but do I need to use a 'plug in' mouse to get everything up and running?
Many thanks in anticipation of your responses.
    Jill

After you put the batteries in the mouse, did you open the slider on the mouse to turn it on?
Try it again with the mouse powered up and on before you start the computer, sometimes there is a bit of a pause while communication is established.

  • Premiere newbie would appreciate and be very happy for some "get-started" help

    Hi
    QUESTION 1
I´m a complete newbie to premiere elements. I have imported some .mts files and some .avi files from my digital HD camera....when I create a project all available move clips appear in my project to become possible to drag into my project timeline ..BUT it´s only the .avi´s that are being presented with a "snapshot image" of the clip, all .mts movies are just presented with a blue-ish standard icon and this gives me a hard time knowing exactelly which clip I should pick without having to open the movie.
I hope this is just a setting or can someone tell me why i cant spot an "image" representation from the .mts file to makes it easier to spot what the content of the file/s are ?
    QUESTION 2
Can someone give me some words about how to best structure moveies and images on the file system and also "inside" elements. I have two physical disks, one large 1TB disk and one smaller 80 GB SSD disk. How should I think here...all media on the "slower" disk and only the premiere software on teh faster SSd disk ?
    QUESTION 3
In the end, after editing movies, of course I would be able to present the material in the best format possible which I guess is blue-ray...but to be able to create a project that will make it possible to output a blue ray format, I have understood that I need to apply some sort of add on to my premiere installation, is that correct and if so - how can I do this and also from where do I get this add-on/plugin ?
Based upon my camera files (.mts), I would like to use my PS3 to present the finished material, can you give me some sort of step by step guidance to how to setup the project. SHould I use the .mts files and edit these, or should I perhaps convert them to something else and then make my movie ?? As you can hear I´m pretty confused about all these formats and what to do to make the end result as good as it can get
I´m not really sure about my initial recording either..I have a Canon HF10 recorder, and as far as I know to be able to get teh best quality for my "raw" material I need to use a format selection called "FXP" on the camera ? Does someone know if this is the best to use (perhaps a stupid question since i guess this will differ a lot between camera models perhaps) ?
REALLY would appreciate help on these above questions to be able to know the starting point....
Hope to get some answers that will help me up & running in a while...
    Thanks
    Helmut

Hunt, thanks again for your answer, I will try to look into the organizer issue
in other ways, thinking about looking into the books suggested by Steve..
Something else I guess you can guide me through though is the different formats...jsut to mention, I basically dont know a thing about different movie formats, the only thing I know is that I have a HDdigital video recorder (Canon HF10) and that the files I copy across to my machine is of this .mts format...
should I make another setting on my video camera to get another format of the files I record and the files I then transfer to my computer..remember I´m a total newbie so when you mention that you should have converted to HDV - this does not say me anything unfortunatelly....could you in any easy watell me the basic things I should know....when I created my project in premiere I was asked to select what kind of project settings I wanted to have...for this selection a number of different formats was possible and I jsut picked one of them basically wthout knowing what I was doing.....kind of frustrating since I want to make the best qualty output from my movies and also the edited output from premiere...
Is it possible to give some easily understood intro and what small things I should always do......like when selecting the project "media" or what specific setting to check that are important on the video camera itself.....what is the best/highest quality format to work with/edit to get the best output from my finished medias etc
    Apprecite your help a lot
    Thanks
    Helmut

  • Semi-Simple Chart -- getting started help requested

I am trying to make a smiple chart with years, campuses, and number of students. The x axis would be years, the y axis the number of students, and for each campus, a line horizonally displaying the change across time of the number of students. I don't know before hand how many campuses I will have, and I have looked for a way to represent these three values using something with the flash chart, but with no luck. Can someone direct me to either an example or some documentation on how to approach this? I looked at some anychart documentation and even built an html header with a function in it that should build a chart (I created a region to call that function), but it doesn't show up. I was thinking that I could pass the function variables that could build my chart on the fly, but even that effort hasn't gone anywhere. Please help.
    TIA,
    Deb

Just purchased a kindle fire hd with skype installed.  I want to video call either a windows desktop/laptop or mac or another android tablet.  When I try to set up contacts it asks me to enter a phone number.  All the phone numbers are landline or cell phones which cost money.  How do I set up to contact someone over the internet with a desktop or wi-fi with a tablet or laptop, what phone number do I use, if any????? I am not interested in 3g or 4g mobile calling and I don't want to pay for the service at this time.  Thank You

  • Getting started with MAX

I am trying to import signal from the fieldpoint modules and I have gone to the web for help. I have fieldpoint working. The web says assumes that I have MAX working but i can't get it to work. in MAX when i do the getting started help configuration, it gives me this error...
One or more missing GPIB interfaces.
There are several reasons why you might encounter this problem:
Reason: Your GPIB interface is incorrectly installed.
Solution: Please verify that your GPIB interface is correctly installed and rerun the NI-488.2 Troubleshooting Wizard.
Reason: You are using a non-Plug-and-Play interface (e.g., AT-GPIB/TNT, PC/104-GPIB, PXI-8156) and you did not use the Add New Hardware Wizard to add the interface to your system properly.
Solution: Click the Add Hardware button and the Add GPIB Hardware wizard will guide you through the process of adding GPIB hardware.
We have simply hooked our FP-1000 up to our computer via a RS-232 cable and it says that we are missing hardware or something. do you have any ideas for me?
Thanks so much for your help
    Dave
Reason: For the PCMCIA-GPIB and PCMCIA-GPIB+, the PCMCIA host controller must be working properly in order to use the GPIB interface.
Solution: Use the Windows Device Manager to verify that your PCMCIA host controller is functioning correctly. Start the control panel by selecting "Start>>Settings>>Control Panel", open the System icon, select the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button. If you select "View>>Devices by type", you can look at the PCMCIA adapter properties to ensure it is correctly enabled.

    Dave,
It looks like you've been running the NI 488.2 Getting Started Wizard. That's why all the errors refer to GPIB Hardware.
What you need to do is look for your FieldPoint device under the Remote Systems section on the left side of the window. It should be auto-detected. Then right-click and select Find Devices, to detect the modules installed in your FieldPoint bank.
That should get you started. Let us know if you have any further issues getting set up in MAX.

Are you trying to call yourself to test FaceTime?  If so, you must have a second E-Mail address registered with your Apple ID.  In other words, there must be a different E-Mail address on each unit.
