Getting the Hang of Compressor

I have played around with compressor on many occasions but never managed to get any results......is this supposed to be a user friendly app?
I cannot see anywhere to save the project to after specifying the settings?
Anyone know any good tutorials showing how to use this App? After a 30minute kick around I usually throw in the towel and revert to more traditional/ easier methods like save as/ quicktime conversion/ done!
What are the advantages over using Compressor over the above method?

This one's very, very good.

  • Can't get the C3 multiband compressor to work

I've got Garageband 3, a ChannelStrip demo version and Inspector plug-ins and I've just downloaded the C3 compressor and put it in hd/library/audio/plugins/components and it doesn't come up as an AU in Garageband. What am I doing wrong??? Help.

    Thank you Christoph.
About understanding the concept of compression, I am finding little info. Many online resources suggest starting with Apple's four presets, but when i look for info on what those presets mean, I find zero so far.
    YOU NOTED
And as for the presets of the compressor: They are just that - presets that are offered to you, but of course you can change every slider to your taste. Before you try your luck with the MultiBand, try to understand what a single compressor does (the AUDynamics processor or a third-party).
OK....but for me starting with those 4 presets might be easier than the more technical ones in the beginning since I will have a general idea if what they are supposed to do and can do. I also have a tough time with technical explanatins I have seem. I tend to be a bit "learnig disabled" with left brain things like math (failed it consistently in high school 35 year ago). But knowing why they called them "Fast and Smooth" "subcontrol" "analog" and "gentle" can help me understand if they apply to a certain desired music type, track versus mix, instrument, music genre. Once I userstand why Apple stuck them there and what the recordist is thinking when he or she choose them, it may be easier to get into it deep enough to be meaningful. I am an acoustic musician so am not sure how much some of the more esoteric settimgs might apply to me.
    CHRISTOPH'S COMMENTS
    Very clear!!!!
There's 3 ways your voice can go "into the red":
    - Clipping on recording. YES. "Manual compression!!!" That is what I do. The question proabbly arose because I submitted a song to someone who does mastering as a practice. I know genearlly why he had trouble. I recorded it on Garageband knowing even less than I do now. So I had reverb too high on the voice, and I mixed reverbed voice back into another track to add "texture". He, understandably, could not help as he could not separate the tracks. That is likely where the clipping or peaks created problems as I understand in my layman's terms. Now I know I need to get the basic tracks down better and to avoid overdoing it....
I attach his message to me with my comments at the bottom as it might help understand what is behind my confusion about compressors.
    - Clipping on the track's meter. You can turn down the volume of the track, but then you might sound too soft in other passages. That's when you want to use compression on that track only. Try the built-in compression slider, but the effect might be too subtle. Use the AUDynamics control, the MultiBand is better suited for mastering the final mix.
---> So I understand I have to learn compression if I want to make judicious use of it, but still I am not sure what the terms mean---even the one with the four pre-sets. The mastering guy says he does not know APPLE's terms. His are below in the pasted part.....
    ---As for your other questions:
I never heard that adding reverb or delay will help bring out a voice.
Sorry, what I meant is what the mastering guy mentions below about the balance between the instruments and the voice. But then I guess my problem was the sound in the first place on each track being messed up with two much reverb. Nothing could fix that.
If interested, the song (in its original unmastered messed up form) is available in an MP3 format which might reveal the problems:
GO DOWN YOU BROKEN OLD SHELL OF A MAN
    http://www.soundclick.com/pro/view/01/default.cfm?bandID=538684&content=music
    (second song from top)
----What a compressor does is not primarily affecting the level of a track, but lowering the level of the peaks. It then has an overall volume slider which you can use to bring the level of the track up or down.
    I see....
This what the matering guy said--->
"First, the beginning and end of the song had significant noise issues with the guitar. In addition, the noise wasn't "constant". This causes problems when doing noise reduction from a specific noise sample, because you have to
use different settings for the noise reduction for different parts of the song. You also can't get noise samples from the middle of the song, so the noise reduction isn't as accurate. I ended up editing the song into different sections and using different types of noise reduction on each section. If I tried to "remove" the noise you lost too much ambience and
    the song sounded "dull".
----> THIS WAS MOST LIKELY THE RESULT OF JUST ADDING REVERB TO A COPY OF THE VOICE AND MUSIC TRACKS...PROBABLY I HAVE LEARNED MY LESSON ABOUT OVERDOING IT.
    MOST IMPRTANT PART WAS HERE--->
"The relative levels of the music and vocal were off. The vocal was in general too loud, and needed/needs compression during mixing to control it. This will allow you to properly set the levels relative to each other.....
"I used a lot of different compressors and compression techniques in your song. I needed to control the vocal peaks without smothering them, and I wanted to avoid compressing the guitar parts so they wouldn't loose any volume. I also wanted to bring the guitar parts up in level (make them
louder). Unfortunately, all these compression techniques raise the noise floor, making the noise issues a lot worse.
I would suggest that you re-mix the song and:
    1. Compress the vocal so you can mix in with the other instruments better.
I CAN UNDERSTAND THIS.. IT WILL HELP THE OTHER INSTRUMENTS STAND OUT.
I will post the next part of his message in a new note so I can focus attention on the things he says.
    Thanks!

  • Everytime I get the hang of iMovie they CHANGE it

I don't know when they changed iMovie--I have to assume it's when Yosemite came out. They always seem to coincide, same thing happened with Mavericks or whatever. Is there a tutorial video that can quickly orient me? I don't have time to just experiment and figure it out on my own, and, frankly, I shouldn't have to. When they do a massive re-vamp of a program there should be a new, introductory video or something. I appreciate any help and I know I'm raging. This is just seriously getting old.

Are you referring to the change from iMovie 9 to iMovie 10 in December 2013 when Mavericks was the current OS?   As you have found, there are a lot of changes - it was a complete rewrite to bring old underlying code up to date.  You can still run version 9 (aka iMovie'11) under Yosemite though.
To get to grips with the changes you may find the videos here to be useful:  http://www.macprovideo.com/hub/review-2/review-imovie-10-the-2013-release
The iMovie 10 help files are at: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/ (though it doe not appear yet to cover all the small changes introduced in version 10.0.6)

  • Getting the hang of this new fangled discussions site.

Well, we'll all have to get used to it I suppose. I'm not doin' too well so far. How you get to Pondini's brilliant Time Machine Advice for instance (are you there Pondini?). I did get to it somehow, put it on Favo(u)rites - er sorry is that a Windows term?

Suppose all this new stuff is designed to appeal to the kiddywinks, Apple must be dead scared of upsetting the younger generation.
It DOES seem more child-friendly LOL. The huge jump in font size may be to please a shift in iPhone demographic, etc. Must be crazy in London right now - I live in Canada and have visited UK 2x. Once (by sheer coincidence) just in time for a RW. I had no idea. I just looked around at all the flags and went "Gosh they are so patriotic here..." So I've finally adjusted to this website's new "look" - still miss the old one, tho' - that fine font really suited me...
Cheers, and enjoy the celebrations over there

My phone gyro stopped working.  How do I flip an image from vertical to horizontal?

    Hey Bill Seiden,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with the orientation of your iPhone. Let's check to make sure orientation lock is not enabled, you can do so from the Control Center:
Lock the screen in portrait orientation - Control Center
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TI152#TI152
Lock the screen in portrait orientation.
Swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen to reveal Control Center.
Tap to lock the screen in portrait orientation.

  • How do I get the serial number of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 off my mac.

I'm returning the software, it's too complicated for me.

The Amazon Return Policy is you can only return boxed software from Amazon if it is UNOPENED.  Since you have installed it you will probably have to keep it.  If you are shooting RAW, you might want to take another shot at learning Lightroom.  Watch some of the training videos and maybe buy a book.  I bet you will eventually get the hang of it.

  • How do I get the Converting to Adobe PDF process to stop hanging?

I installed Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional on a machine running Windows 7 Professional 64bit.  I have tried creating PDFs from MS Office files (using the Acrobat PDFMaker toolbar).  I have also tried printing to Adobe PDF, from within MS office but also elsewhere (e.g. IE, Notepad).  No matter the creation method, I am prompted for a file name and location and then the Acrobat PDFMaker window appears with a taskbar and message "Coverting to Adobe PDF..."  The process hangs there and a print job appears in the Adobe PDF printer with a status of "Error - Printing."  How do I get the process to stop hanging and successfully create PDFs?

FWIW, a former colleague was also frustrated with this "Error - Printing" hang-up problem, when printing from any app to Adobe PDF, with Acrobat Pro 9.3.0 on a Win7x64 system. I recall forum threads on that issue, with no clear resolution?. What did work on every print job, though, was the two-step method: (a) Print to File with Adobe PDF, then (b) fire up Acrobat Distiller 9 to convert the intermediate .prn Postscript file. (It would seem that Acrotray wasn't functioning properly in a x64 environment?...though it did run as one of the pc startup processes)
As that two-step method was acceptable for his workflow, he never explored the possibility of getting a fluent one-step PDF creation by upgrading to the highest available v9x version, or beyond.

  • Getting the best possible DVD encodes out of Compressor

Is there a decent guide somewhere about how best to set Compressor DVD encode projects up? I take it using the standard two-pass encode settings probably isn't ideal and some tweaks would possible yield better results.
I just read this on another site - Can somebody explain what this is all about?
+The program I used is a Windows software encoder that costs a lot less money than you'd think. I manually operated it (that is, told it which frame was to be an I frame, a P frame, or on rarer occasions, a B frame) by hand rather than letting it assign automatically.+
+Tweaking the GOP structure like this is essential for getting the most out of it, and beyond a certain point actually has more of an effect on the picture quality than bit-rate.+

Is there a decent guide somewhere about how best to set Compressor DVD encode projects up? I
take it using the standard two-pass encode settings probably isn't ideal and some tweaks would
    possible yield better results.
If you're serious about this, you should also invest in a book dedicated to video encoding. Just look on amazon.com for the latest editions byt the tow or three main authors, search for "encoding" and "video encoding."
The process of getting the best possible image out of MPEG2 is tedious, more like accounting than moviemaking. The best software allows you to carefully preview the results, compare them, and is likely to be supported by a realtime encoding card. And that means it's a very expensive PC application.
At NAB2008 a new product was announced for Compressor that was supposed to provide near real time professional grade MPEG2 encoding. Cant' recall the name. It was about $3k IIRC.

My IPad mini hangs on the Internet. Will not start. Have rebooted the home and on / off. There is internet in the house (using it now). Getting the message: Safari can not open the page ...... What do I do?

    Try this:
    1. Close all inactive apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two. Tap the minus sign to close app.
    2. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple Logo.

Upon switching on my ipad, I'm getting the caption "Unable to Download Application "*Solitaire" could not be downloaded at this time." Further, I'm getting 2 options - Done & Retry, both of which are not responding. The ipad is in the hanged situation for all practical purposes. How do I get out of this situation?

    Try a reset:
    1. Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together)
    2. For about 10 seconds
    3. Until you see the Apple logo (very important)
    4. Ignore the red slider

  • The "hanging/freezing/not responding" problem that existed in all versions of Firefox 3.6 persists in Firefox 4.0

Starting on April 14, 2011, I tried installing Firefox 4.0, which I downloaded from the Mozilla site. The first couple of times I tried to install it, it corrupted Firefox file places.sqlite. I know this because the install renamed the file to places.sqlite.corrupt. Luckily, I had recent backups. My previous installed versions were 3.5.18, which I had been using up to this time, and 3.6.16. I tried installing 4.0 with 3.6.16 installed, which I installed only for the sake of installing 4.0, and with no previous version installed and got the same bad results. I finally got a "successful" install on April 16, 2011, with no previous version installed.
Early on I discovered that Firefox 4.0 hangs (Firefox not responding) when left to idle for exactly 5 minutes (I timed it several times after immediately starting Firefox), pegging a constant 50% of the CPU when it hangs. I left it in a hanging state for up to half an hour, but nothing changed. This problem existed for all versions of Firefox 3.6, which is why I didn't install version 3.6.16 until I was ready to install version 4.0. I never kept any version of Firefox 3.6 installed for more than a couple of hours because of this problem. I need to be able to let Firefox stay idle for long periods of time -- certainly for more than 4 minutes and 59 seconds -- without having it hang, and I was able to do that with all versions of Firefox prior to version 3.6. It's incomprehensible that Firefox 4.0 has to always hang if it's inactive for more than 4 minutes and 59 seconds, and it's incomprehensible that this problem has been present and persistent since version 3.6 was introduced. To believe that 4 minutes and 59 seconds is sufficient idle time for a browser is absurd. This was never an issue with any version of Firefox prior to version 3.6, this was never an issue with Netscape, and it's not an issue with IE 8.
There are 2 other problems related to the hanging problem. If the browser and the bookmarks library are both open and the browser is closed normally, the bookmarks library remains open. After being left idle for exactly 5 minutes, the bookmarks library hangs, pegging a constant 50% of the CPU. If Firefox 4.0 is restarted before the 5 minute idle limit, it starts successfully. If an attempt is made to restart it after the 5 minute idle limit, it won't start. If the bookmarks library is left open for less than 5 minutes after the browser is closed, it can be closed successfully. In all versions of Firefox prior to version 3.6, the bookmarks library automatically closed when the browser was closed. The other related problem is that Firefox 4.0 occasionally pegs a constant 50% of the CPU without hanging even while it is being used and even if the only thing open is the home page, which in my case is google.com. Firefox can be used while this is happening, but it is worrisome and shouldn't be happening. Normally, Firefox 4.0 uses no CPU when it is left to idle within the 5 minute idle limit.
Firefox 4.0 has not crashed on its own yet, so I've had no crash reports to send to Mozilla, but because I've had to use the "End Now" button on the Microsoft unresponsive program window numerous times to terminate it when it hangs, numerous Microsoft Windows dump reports have been generated, all of which I've sent to Microsoft.
The last fully working version of Firefox I had was 3.5.18. Unfortunately, I don't have the installer for that version and Mozilla doesn't make it available anymore. Also, it looks like version 4.0 altered the places.sqlite file such that I might not be able to go back to version 3.5.18 even if I could. If I could reinstall version 3.5.18 and get it to work with the altered places.sqlite file, I would, but it is outdated and no longer supported by Mozilla, and I only want to use up-to-date and supported software.
The hanging problem is totally intolerable and unacceptable. If I can't get a version of Firefox 4.0 anytime soon that doesn't hang after being idle for just 5 minutes (why 5 minutes???) or for any limited amount of time, I'll have to install and use Google Chrome as a permanent replacement for Firefox. (If I do have to replace Firefox with Google Chrome, how can I get my Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail links to open in Google Chrome when I click on them?) Based on other user feedback regarding this problem dating back to the very first Firefox 3.6 version, Mozilla has had ample time to resolve it. I have found other problems with Firefox 4.0, but I'm not going to bother telling Mozilla about them because if the hanging problem isn't resolved soon, I'll have to stop using Firefox permanently. I can't and won't tolerate the hanging problem. I have been using Firefox exclusively for many years, but my disappointment with it has been growing since version 3.6 was introduced and my patience has run out.
I would appreciate Mozilla letting me know within a week of this posting if they can't or won't fix the Firefox 4.0 hanging problem. If I don't receive a substantive response to this problem within a week, I'm going to have to abandon Firefox permanently and switch to Google Chrome. I'm also going to leave a negative review of Firefox 4.0 on CNET to warn other potential users of the hanging problem.
I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition 32-bit SP3 on a Dell XPS 400 desktop computer. I have an Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz, 3.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 RAM @ 265MHz, RADEON X300 SE 128MB HyperMemory, and 190GB of free space on my hard drive. I am using COMODO as my firewall and Avira AntiVir as my anti-virus software. I am also using WinPatrol and Secunia PSI. My ISP is AT&T. My download speed averages 2.5 Mbps, and my upload speed averages 0.65 Mbps. All of my software is up to date, thanks to Secunia PSI and CNET TechTracker, and my computer is free from infection.

Another aspect of the Firefox 4.0 "hanging/freezing/not responding" problem has emerged. I have found that on the common occurrence when Firefox 4.0 occasionally pegs a constant 50% of the CPU while idling within the 5 minute idle limit and I close it normally, it disappears from the Task Bar but continues to run and continues to peg a constant 50% of the CPU. I tried restarting Firefox 4.0 and got the following message: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." Before Firefox can be restarted, the existing Firefox process must be killed via the Task Manager or Process Explorer (I use the latter), after which a Microsoft Windows dump report is immediately generated. I always allow the dump to be sent to Microsoft.
The three big questions that have gone unanswered by Mozilla are 1) why did the hanging problem start with the very first release of Firefox 3.6, 2) why was the problem allowed to continue on up to and through Firefox 4.0, and 3) why hasn't Mozilla fixed the problem yet? And what is the significance of the 5 minute idle limit? Do Firefox 3.6 through 4.0 try to launch something when the browser and/or the bookmarks library have been idle for exactly 5 minutes? Maybe it's a problem with the number and/or type of plugins and extensions and/or the number of bookmarks. Maybe Firefox 3.6 through 4.0 work just fine if there are few to no plugins, extensions, and bookmarks, but that doesn't realistically accommodate users. Whatever the cause of the problem, Mozilla should have had a handle on it by now.
If anyone from Mozilla Support is reading this post, please let me know if it is possible to roll back Firefox 4.0 to Firefox 3.5.18. If it is possible, how do I do it, and where can I get the installer for Firefox 3.5.18? If I can reinstall it, I'll use it until Secunia Software Inspector informs me that it is insecure and no longer safe to use. At that point (maybe much sooner), I'll switch to Google Chrome exclusively because I don't want to use outdated software that is insecure and because I don't believe that Mozilla intends to fix the hanging problem and is willing to lose users over it. I certainly don't want to use software like Firefox 4.0 that has such an impactful problem. If I do have to abandon Firefox, how can I click on Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail links and get them to open in Google Chrome?

  • How to get the most from Nokia Support Discussions

This forum is a community of users of Nokia products and services from around the world who share their experiences and help people to solve problems. I've been using this forum for a couple of years now, I originally joined because I work in telecomms and I was looking for answers to a few issues that I was experiencing, and like many of the regular members, I've been coming here ever since. There is a really good crowd here, and it is often fun to read the boards as well as informative.
If you have a problem, if nobody else can help, and if you can find us (it's not hard, Discussions all over Google whenever you search for something Nokia-related), then maybe you can hire: The D Team!
The communityThis is a peer-to-peer community, you are usually dealing with people who have an interest in mobile technology, albeit with a particular preference to Nokia, who can help on a wide range of questions - the advantage that we have as a community is that many users have experience of a range of devices and accessories, so you can often get help here about issues concerning Nokia products being used with products from other companies that even Nokia itself cannot offer. There has also recently been a presence of Nokia staff (their usernames are shown in green) who are also helping users on the forum in their own time.
Unlike many forums that we all use regularly, this is an official forum owned and run by Nokia, not the creation of amateur enthusiasts like you and I, so they are much more strict about behaviour than other forums, and the moderators will remove anything that is offensive or disrespectful to other users, or which may cause offence to users of a sensitive nature. Basically, you should treat other users the way you could treat another member of the public in a public place - too many people take advantage of the anonymity offered by the internet to behave in a way that they would not normally do.
This forum is not a source of official support from Nokia, for that you have to call or e-mail from the "Contact us" link. Most of us are just normal consumers like you, therefore we don't have information on when products, services, software updates etc. will be available so it's futile to ask. Nokia doesn't even publish this information in most cases, so even the Nokia employee members probably wouldn't be able to answer these sorts of questions even if they do have the information.
Tips for getting your question answered:
     (1) Search firstSomebody else may already have posted the same question, so you can save yourself time by checking first if the answer you need is already published on the forum.
    (2) Choose the right boardPeople are online at different times, we may be taking a break from our work, relaxing at home after a meal, flicking back to the forum whilst doing other surfing on the 'net or anything else, and people will look in boards where they have a specific personal interest so, for example, if you have a problem playing a video on your N96 use the Imaging and videos board in the Ovi and Mobile Media section or if you have a problem installing themes or applications on your 6220 Classic, use the Phone Applications under Software. Posting these questions on the Nseries and S60 smartphones board might see them get lost amongst lots of technical questions about the phone itself, you have a better chance of getting an answer by choosing the right place to ask it.
    (3) Write a clear titleSpeaking for myself, I don't have time to read everything on the boards, so I look for topics that I might be able to answer; therefore don't just put the subject as a phone model number or the name of an application or users might just pass over your post without opening it to read. For example, a title like "Can't get GPS signal in 5800" is much more likely to catch the attention of an experienced GPS user or a 5800 user and get the question answered quicker.
    (4) Explain your problem clearlyPhones and the software that we use in them and with them grow ever more complex, just saying "I can't send an SMS" or "Mr camera isn't working" does not give any information with which an experienced user can help you to troubleshoot. Whatever the case, explain exactly what you are trying to achieve, what you tried, and describe what happened, for example: did an application shut itelf down? Did the phone freeze? Was there an error message, and if so what was it? All of this will help other users to identify what is going wrong for you and the less questions they have to ask you back, the quicker they might help you.
Tips for making the right impression:
     (5) Use normal textWRITING ENTIRELY IN CAPITALS does not convey a sense of urgency, in internet communities it is perceived as shouting or other generally agressive behaviour, so it will not win the hearts and minds of the people whose help you need. Also, using large characters or bright colours may look nice to you, but too much text written in very large, bold or colourful letters can simply fill the screen unnecessarily and is not always any easier to read, so it can also put people off from helping you. Use these features when you need to highlight a particular point, not all of the time.  (6) Resize imagesIf you are embedding a picture in your post, resize it so that it fits into the frame of the normal page. A full screenshot of your PC or a megapixel+ picture will stretch the borders of the page so far that people have to scroll left and right repeatedly to read not only your post, but the entire page of the thread that it is on, and just as above, if you make it difficult for others to read the thread, they could miss some information or just pass over it altogether. If you want to share a large image, you can also add it as an attachment to the post so that people can view it when they choose without impacting on the display of the page for everybody.
    (7) Pleeeeaaaaazzzzeeee don't do thisFar from making most users take pity on you and try to help you, this kind of thing can be just as bad as all capitals, especially is you make a word so long that it affects the display of the page like inserting large images does. You are also better off not using SMS shorthand and local slang in your posts, because users of the boards are from all over the world and might be speaking English as a second, third, etc. language, so the person who knows the exact solution to your question might not understand the way you have asked it.

You mention it is a DV/HDV Film - how did you edit it? Did you edit both formats on the same timeline in Final Cut? (What were the settings in Final Cut for the timeline?)
If you are using HDV in a timeline due to the length of time to conform the output, you may be better off exporting the entire thing for testing (small enough for HDV, though I often use AIC or 422 nowadays).
What settings are you using in Compressor? I know you mentioned many combinations, but did you use any frame controls? What was the rate? Did you use CBR/VBR?
One thing to try to get things started. Use 8 CBR and in the frame controls set them to to "Better" for all of them. Will take a bit longer using the filters but should give you an idea where you are at. (Also take a look at the self contained movie to see if there are any artifacts/picels there).
How are you watching the DVD - computer screen or burning to a DVD?
