Getting the name of the installed video card

I'm trying to discover if exists any way in java to get the name (ATI, nVidia, Creative) and other properties (version, memory size,...) of the installed video card where the jvm is running.
Thanks in advance,
Joan

Definitely not directly with Java APIs....
2 approaches...
1. get another external program to do the work for you, and export it to a text file.
then you parse then text file.
On WinXP, there's a program called msinfo32.exe in
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo
type msinfo32 /? for a list of command line options.
Looks like you can route it to a text file.
2. Write a low level JNI library in native Windows C++, which somehow finds that hardware specific information from the Windows API.

Owen

It appears the 15" 2.2 ghz isn't worth spending $400 more for, but you get the 1GB Radeon 6750M that has four times the VRAM than the 15" 2.0Ghz model and about 167% more performance. High settings on all current games with over 50 fps.
If your not into 3D gaming or just light weight, then the 2.0 Ghz (last years performance) will suffice on low-medium settings at about 30 fps.
The 13" is rather poor as it has integrated graphics. 30 fps on only some games.
The high res screen is a excellent choice and the anti-glare is great for viewing just about anywhere.
No messy films to replace at $30-$40 a pop.
A lot of people bring the glossy screens back once they hear about the anti-glare.

    Here's my 17"
In my opinion the extra $400 for another 2-3 years of use out of the computer is worth it.
Quad cores are more than enough for most uses for most people for many years, it's just a slow card is going to make the machine feel slow in rendering graphics in the future.

  • What is the best Video Card I can get for an Early 2008 Mac Pro?

What is the best Video Card I can get for an Early 2009 Mac Pro3,1?

    A 3,1 is "Early 2008" with DDR2 FBDIMMs, Intel 54xx Harpertown, and not 2009 Nehalem with DDR3.
http://www.barefeats.com bench tests. A 3,1 does not improve as much due to its old PCIe 2.0 implementation for one thing.
"Best" is hugely subjective. For what? cost versus performance and whether you need CUDA support or AMD - dual AMD's for FCP-X for instance.
I think GTX 970 right now is close to "best".

  • Blue screen when attempting to use the dedicated video card

I keep getting a blue screen when attempting to use the dedicated video card.
I managed to install the AMD driver for it but without the other components like the Catalyst Control Center as it blue screened on startup when attempting to load the Catalyst Control Center.
The OS loads fine. Any applications that don't use the dedicated video card runs fine. All other drivers install fine as well.
Applications like games and Photoshop that switch to the dedicated video card on startup automatically crashes, the OS freezes then a blue screen appears.
What could be causing the problem? This problem just recently appeared. Two weeks ago.

This problem only appeared a few weeks ago. Before that, the same drivers from the HP site installed and functioned normally.
Could this be a problem with the graphics card itself?
Note sure but if we can know the system P/N others can look to see what drivers it has for the graphics to know what is there.

  • Error: The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum system requirements by Aperture

I have a Mac Pro 3.1 10.5.8 and Aperture 2.1.4.  My NVida 8800gt with 512 mb was over heating so I brought and install the ATI radeon hd 5770 to replace it.  Now when I try to start Aperture I get this message "Error: The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum system requirements by Aperture".  All other software works fine, ie photoshop elements and Safari.  When I install my old card aperture will open with no problem, but of course the card will overheat within 10 mins and I will have no video.  I have search on google with no luck.  Will upgrading to Aperture 3 fix this problem?

    5770 requires 10.6.5.
The 8800GT - there is the 350* bake in over 10 minutes - 50% or better chance
you can find 8800GT on http://myworld.ebay.com/macvidcards/

Fan control helps with FBDIMMs which need to be kept under 70C too.

  • How do I get the training videos to work for photoshop elements 11

How do I get the training videos to run so that I may learn how to use photoshop elements 11?

Just go to tv.adobe.com and you can watch them there. It's much simpler than trying to hassle around with the problems with installing AIR and so on.

  • Just got this error message - The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements for Aperture

Help.  I have an iMAC - not even one year old - just got this message - The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements for Aperture.
I have not made any changes to my machine. Help  - I can't get to my images

    Try restarting your system.
If that does not help, we will need to know your Aperture version and MacOS X version. And do you use an external monitor? Then disconnect it before rebooting.

  • HT4007 The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements for Aperture.

The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements for Aperture.  I have not used Aperture in a while and just got this error message.  I tried applying OS updates and reinstalling Aperture and still get the same message.  Does anybody have a solution or work around.

Are you using a non-standard Graphics Cards?  Then this may be the reason.
You may also get this error message, if you accidentally booted into "Safe Boot Mode". Then certain extensions of the Graphics card will be disabled and Aperture cannot be launched.
Reboot and make sure that you this time will boot into regular boot mode.
See: Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
If you are indeed running the system in Safe Mode, the question is, what made this happen? Do you use a wireless mouse and keyboard? There is a strange bug that makes Mac OS X boot into Safe mode, if you turn the wireless devices on, while the system is booting. Make sure they are active, before you boot.
But if you did not boot into Safe Mode, you could try to boot into this mode to reset the graphics card and then boot again into regular mode.

  • Will the 5870 Video card run off...

I have a 5870 Video card in a 2012 Mac Pro using 2 power connections off the motherboard. No available power connections right now.
I need a spare power connection off the motherboard to run an Avid HDX card, (fan only), so will the 5870 Video card run ok split (Y) off one power connection?
I've got the cable, but I didn't want to just do it and ruin something.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Which one is the best video card?

    greetings!
i want to buy a new video card but now i have not the money for a quadro card that is the best for the after effects and other video editing software. i want an opinion...which are the characteristics in the new video card that i should notice for after effects?
a high value engine clock or memory clock?
high value in Unified Shader Processors?
i m thinking about ati 's hd 3870....have anyone use this card with good results?

Well, don't get me wrong, but that's one of those "ask 100 different people, get 100 different answers" questions. As long as we are talking After Effects or other Adobe products, the most important considerations are:
Q: Does the card provide enough video RAM to run on large monitors/ dual monitors without loosing any acceleration functions?
A: Yes, if it has 512 MB or more, it ius usually safe to say that it even will run perfect on dual 24" screens or very large 32" single screens.
Q: Which applications use acceleration and what kind of acceleration?
A: AE --> interface, 3D compositions, MediaCore (footage handling) some effects, Encoding MPEG with Adobe Media Encoder; Encore --> Preview window, transcoding; Premiere --> interface drawing, MediaCore, Clip viewers, some effects; Photoshop --> 3D (to a very minor exctent), video layers.
Q: How does it affect my choice of graphics card and what features do they use?
A: All of them use primarily custom pixel shader magic, so to answer your question: more pipelines (ALUs) = more joy. The use of vast amounts of video RAM (beyond drawing the UI) would only have relevance for AE if you are working with many large layers in OpenGL mode or Photoshop with massive 3D objects.
The rest is pretty much of no consequence. A lot of those functions are not perfectly realtime, so overclocked processors will go unnoticed. Memory transfer speed might be a minor concern, but that's mainly relevant for AE's 3D to load and unload the "textures" and Photoshop. However, unless you are doing this all the time, you will never notice it, either.
Most current consumer cards support Adobe products well enough to make it a "safe" buy, so unless you are running other, more resource hungry apps that may need a special environment and optimized drivers you should be happy. The only warning I can give is to be wary with any GeForce 8800 models, as they are prone to problems. The ATI card you are eyeing sounds reasonably powerful, so it should work.

  • What is the best video card for 3D?

I'm getting a 2008 Mac Pro, will equip it with 10GB of RAM. What is the best video card for 3D rendering? I've read that the stock ATI 2600 card is woefully inadequate. I've also read that the NVIDIA 8800 card is better for gaming, and has caused some problems anyway. I can't spring for the top-end Quadra card that Apple offers. Are there good, cost-effective options for 3D work? Can I even get a video card on the open market that is not flashed by Apple?

Basically there are only three options available:
    1. ATI 2600
    2. ATI 1900
    3. NVidia 8800
The latter is the best of the three. See benchmark results at Bare Feats.
You cannot use a video card not provided by Apple because they will not work with OS X or the hardware.

I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.

Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...
G5 PCIe options are listed here:

Did you download the Basic/Free version?
I also thought the Trial period was as long as you needed!?
What is your Warranty and Return Policy?
You get to use VueScan for as long as you want before you buy it, so we recommend you test it before you buy it to make sure it meets your needs.
All sales are final and there are no refunds.
Isn't this a bit harsh? Naah I actually prefer to solve problems, and if I offer refunds, people give up too easily. If I can't solve your problem after you send a few Problem Reports (see above), I'm happy to give a refund.

  • Can't get the install CD's to boot.

    Dear all,
I've seen topics like this but not quite the same.
I have a Macbook Pro without anny OS on it. I'm trying to get the original version of OS X installed (10.5.2). It however refuses to boot from the CD. Actualy it boots..and restarts.. thats it. The CD i'm using is an original instalation CD. It was most likely not sold with this exact system but with the same model (its a company laptop and we have purchased about 10 at the same time all with their own CD's)
When the macbook starts up it just asks for a bootable cd.
Windows XP will boot/install normaly but we need OS X on the machine (next to windows).
The CD is fine. Windws can read it and so can the mac when booting with the "option" button pressed. But select it will just cause the mac to reboot again.
Annyone have anny ideas how to get the Instalation started?
    Kind regards,
    Marc

You either need the OS installer disk DVD that came with the MBP or a retail version with an OS version equal or higher than the OS that originally came with the MBP. Apparently the DVD you are using is not the correct one.
