Global_db_name
Hi
just installed oracle 10g, and set the global name to databasename during installation. didnt provide a domain prefix. however, when i now query the
select * from global_name
it displays databasename.REGRESS.RDBMS.DEV.US.ORACLE.COM
Is it of no risk to just use "alter database rename global_name to <databasename>;" and then problem solved???
thanks for any valuable inputs..
It is not a risk to change it with that statement.
However, check that your db_domain is not set to REGRESS.RDBMS.DEV.US.ORACLE.COM
You can find this in the initsid.ora file, spfile or while connected as sys in SQL*Plus type: show parameters db_domain.

Ftping the PG.xml to mds folder will not help the page to goto MDS directory
You have to import the file using xmlimporter
I understand you have done the import, but it is not success.
Could you please post what is the script you used to import the PG.xml
and once you run what was the output you have got.
May be you can refer the URL for the scripts

ODP and ADO and a trigger - problem
I have written a simple trigger to turn on tracing for a session based on the username:
It works fine through sqlplus. The application works when run using JDBC and native(?) java. But when we use hibernate and ODP.net and ADO.net The session goes into a loop of recursive sql and gets an ORA-36 too many recursive levels. I am not a java developer and I am at a loss on how to proceed. It appears to be firing the trigger or have fired the trigger, and then look for global_db_name until it dies.
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER gopal_user_login_trigger
AFTER LOGON ON DATABASE
DECLARE
user_name VARCHAR2(30);
BEGIN
SELECT username INTO user_name FROM sys.V$SESSION
WHERE audsid = USERENV('SESSIONID') AND audsid != 0 ;
IF UPPER(user_name) = 'GOPALASSETUSER'
THEN
DBMS_MONITOR.SESSION_TRACE_ENABLE(NULL, NULL, true, true);
END IF;
EXCEPTION
WHEN NO_DATA_FOUND then null;
END;Hi,
Thanks for the bug number - that helped alot.
Why the global_db_name lookup, I do not know. It appears to be part of the logon processing that follows the trigger.It is, indeed, part of the logon process and is called by internal code so that makes sense now.
If you have MetaLink support, I would recommend opening an SR. One simple thing that I might suggest is to set "enlist=false" in your connect string if you can and test with that.
Thanks,
Mark -

NLS CHARACTER SET 변경 방법 (ORACLE 7)
======================================
PURPOSE
SQL>desc sys.props$
Name Null? Type
NAME NOT NULL VARCHAR2(30)
VALUE$ VARCHAR2(2000)
COMMENT$ VARCHAR2(2000)
SQL>column c1 format a30
SQL>select name c1, value$ c1 from sys.props$;
C1 C1
DICT.BASE 2
NLS_LANGUAGE AMERICAN
NLS_TERRITORY AMERICA
NLS_CURRENCY $
NLS_ISO_CURRENCY AMERICA
NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS .,
NLS_DATE_FORMAT DD-MON-YY
NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE AMERICAN
NLS_CHARACTERSET US7ASCII
NLS_SORT BINARY
GLOBAL_DB_NAME NLSV7.WORLD
select convert('a','KO16KSC5601','US7ASCII') from dual;
UPDATE sys.props$
SET value$ = 'KO16KSC5601'
WHERE name = 'NLS_CHARACTERSET';
Commit
select name, value$
from sys.props$
where value$ = 'KO16KSC5601';
NLS_LANG=American_America.KO16KSC5601; export NLS_LANG
또는 .cshrc 에서.
setenv NLS_LANG American_America.KO16KSC5601
ora-12708
12708, 00000, "error while loading create database NLS parameter %s"
Character set : KO16KSC5601
===================================
SQL> create table 시험1
2 (컬럼1 varchar(10));
가
a
SQL> select length(컬럼1) from 시험1;
1
1
3
SQL> select lengthb(컬럼1) from 시험1;
2
1
6
Character set : US7ASCII
=================================
SQL> create table "사원"
2 ("사원이름" varchar2(10));
가
a
SQL> select length("사원이름") from "사원";
2
1
6
SQL> select lengthb("사원이름") from "사원";
2
1
6

NLS_CHARACTERSET US7ASCII
NLS_SORT BINARY
GLOBAL_DB_NAME NLSV7.WORLD
select convert('a','KO16KSC5601','US7ASCII') from dual;
UPDATE sys.props$
SET value$ = 'KO16KSC5601'
WHERE name = 'NLS_CHARACTERSET';
Commit
select name, value$
from sys.props$
where value$ = 'KO16KSC5601';
NLS_LANG=American_America.KO16KSC5601; export NLS_LANG
또는 .cshrc 에서.
setenv NLS_LANG American_America.KO16KSC5601
ora-12708
12708, 00000, "error while loading create database NLS parameter %s"
Character set : KO16KSC5601
===================================
SQL> create table 시험1
2 (컬럼1 varchar(10));
가
a
SQL> select length(컬럼1) from 시험1;
1
1
3
SQL> select lengthb(컬럼1) from 시험1;
2
1
6
Character set : US7ASCII
=================================
SQL> create table "사원"
2 ("사원이름" varchar2(10));
가
a
SQL> select length("사원이름") from "사원";
2
1
6
SQL> select lengthb("사원이름") from "사원";
2
1
6

DBLINK truncation with SAP HANA db
Hi - I have Oracle 11g installed in my Windows laptop and dblink connected to SAP's HANA database via ODBC using the HANA odbc driver. My NVARCHAR data in HANA is being truncated in half. I am working thru sqlplus. Same result in SQL developer client tool. The VARCHAR data is ok. I created three Oracle instances with the only difference being the NLS_CHARACTERSET & NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET values. I have three SIDS: orcl, orulu, and orclutf8. All with the same result. My gateway settings for each are all the same. I started testing with SID orcl and once I found that out I decided to create orclu and orclutf8. In our Unix boxes, we have orcl and orclu settings and those are behaving the same (we use unixodbc.org as the mgr).
I provided orclutf8 gateway .ora file and the orclut8 system info below.
Symptoms/Info:
The character set of HANA db is AL32UTF8.
The HANA db table contains NVARCHAR and have Unicode values (eg: em dash, even Chinese char). NVARCHAR columns gets cut in half as shown in sqlplus (same in sql developer).
For the half that do show up, the actual Unicode character shows up in sqlplus as either unprintable character or upside down question mark or a \u character. This is ok coz no abends therefore data gets process and let my customers deal with the non-converted data – it is ok with them.
Since all SIDs are behaving the same way, I provided you information for orclutf8: initdwutf.ora, the system info, and the trace file. Of all things that SHOULD work, it is the one with the exact character set to HANA.
I have two tables in HANA with the same number of columns and rows. Only difference is NVARCHAR versus VARCHAR.There are three columns with 3, 20, and 150 length.
I took a Oracle trace when selecting from each table and compared them both. I pasted a picture at the bottom. The left side is the VARCHAR and right side NVARCHAR. You can see the HANA odbc driver report a truncation issue on line 209 but I do not see this error in sqlplus. I have a SAP incident open on this.
Is there something in the Oracle side that can be tried? For example, in the trace compare picture, the VARCHAR trace shows that is doubled the data size for each column from 3, 20, and 150 to 6, 40, and 300. In the NVARCHAR it did not.

2) For the nvarchar select statement, I do not get an error messages via sqlplus. I get the records displayed truncated in half they should be. A native odbc error do show up in the Oracle Trace file. I think that comes from the HANA odbc driver. It is line 209 of the picture in my original thread.

Issue with Characters (tilde, accent and more)
Hello all,
Im triyng to do and export / import
Export system:
AIX 4.x, Oracle, 8.1.7
Import system
RedHat 5, Oracle 10.0.2
After trying a lot with different character sets, setting and unsetting nls_lang in the target system i still having problems.
The point is that an accent lleter (á) for example once imported is translated to a box (FFFD) or ascii code 191.
We have tried changing NLS_CHARACTERSET and NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET and setting NLS_LANG as environment variable.
The source system has:
env | grep -i nls

LeonardoHi,
Does your indexed data (which you hope to match) contain "sofá" or "sofa" (no diacritic)? If the latter, and in-general, you may benefit from the dgidx flag --diacritic-folding* as described in documentation "Mapping accented characters to unaccented characters". If you are running the latest version, this is all that should be required to generate a match.

Highlighting a value in an interactive report
Hi,
I have an interactive report on which i have a column which displays either "Y" or "N". My requirement is to display "N" in bold and red color for every record having N. How can i make it work in my interactive report.
ThanksHi Andy,
I am sorry but didnt understand what you are asking thats why i posted my query. I didnt understand what you meant by standard report column. It was highlighting N in my previous post because i didnt write my code in CODE tag. Npw please have a look.

Converting to UTF8 from US7ASCII
This is what I did to change the characterset of my PeopleSoft HRMS database to change the character set from US7ASCII to UTF8.Everything seems to have gone well but there is one value that is still not right.I am not sure how to change this or if I let it remain as it is, how is it going to affect the data.
Stop all queues with dbms_aqadm.stop_queue( queue_name => '<queue name>');
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
STARTUP MOUNT;
ALTER SYSTEM ENABLE RESTRICTED SESSION;
ALTER SYSTEM SET JOB_QUEUE_PROCESSES=0;
ALTER SYSTEM SET AQ_TM_PROCESSES=0;
ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
select value from nls_database_parameters where parameter='NLS_CHARACTERSET';
TRUNCATE TABLE SYS.METASTYLESHEET; ---to get rid of ORA-12716 per Metalink Note - 213015.1
ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET UTF8;
--ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET INTERNAL_USE UTF8;
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
STARTUP;
@$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/catmet.sql
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
STARTUP;
Start all queues with dbms_aqadm.start_queue( queue_name => '<queue name>');
Now when I query for the nls parameters in the database, this is what I get:

I am concerned about this value NLS_SAVED_NCHAR_CS which still is US7ASCII.Will this affect the application data anyway.I would be too.
But given that this is PeopleSoft this is not the kind of thing where you should be taking advice from strangers at a website.
Open an SR with Oracle metalink and get advice supported by Oracle Corp. -
How to supply wallet location to OCI client for SSL connection other than sqlnet.ora
I have a oracle 11g database server and I am connecting to it through OCI client in OBIEE Admin tool. This is working fine, but now the requirement is we need to connect to an SSL enabled database.
For this I had to update the sqlnet.ora under $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin in OBIEE installation and specify the wallet location where I placed the wallet containing appropriate certificates.
The above is working fine for me. But due to certain restrictions, we cannot create this sqlnet.ora. Is there a way we can pass this wallet location through some environment variables so that sqlnet.ora is not required?
If we create a jdbc connection, we can specify the wallet location through jdbc connection properties. Is there any such equivalent for OCI based connection. I dont mind how we make the wallet location available to OCI client, so long as I dont have to create a sqlnet.ora.
Any pointers is greatly appreciatedHi,
sqlnet.ora file is required if you want to set the wallet location to another directory by using the WALLET_LOCATION parameter.
If you do not want to use sqlnet.ora then you need to use the default wallet location.
The wallet is placed, by default, in $ORACLE_BASE/admin/<global_db_name>/wallet.
If this directory does not exist or ORACLE_BASE is not set, the default location is: $ORACLE_HOME/admin/<global_db_name>/wallet

with regards,
johnpaulI would advise doing some reading, starting here:
[Oracle Docs: Globalization Support Guide|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/toc.htm]
Do you have metalink access?
If so, I would strongly advise looking at these articles:
260893.1: Unicode character sets in the database
788156.1: UTF8 implications
158577.1: NLS_LANG
The principles of storing a variety of languages are the same and pretty simple.
You pick a database character set that supports all these languages - i.e. a unicode character set (probably AL16UTF16 these days) - or you use the national character set.
Your client applications set the value of NLS_LANG appropriately. You insert the correct data. You select out the correct data.
If it's not too late / if you've got a choice, I would use a unicode database characterset - i.e. not WE8MSWIN1252 - and not just the NCHAR/NVARCHAR2/NLCOB functionality of the national character set. -
