Global Variable save turns out to be **.gbl.vi

Could the extension be the reason for my global to be in op or should I concider using a qu...(I am passing data from a while loop to another parralel while loop with a sub VI.

The extension shouldn't cause a problem. What exactly is the trouble that you're experiencing?
Concerning the rest of you question, queues or notifiers either one would work--and would be better than a global. Your selection between the two depends on the functionality that you want. A queue allows multiple locations to write to a common FIFO and the receiver will see all the messages in the order they were written. With a notifier, a value can be overwritten if the receiver doesn't read fast enough.

I don't work with IVI, but this should work - Open the globals VI and add an IVI Logical Name control (I/O palette).
As a more generic solution, right click the output terminal and select Create>>Control. Find the control on the FP, copy it (ctrl+c) and paste it into your globals VI. In either case, it should now be a global variable.
You should take care when working with globals, because you can cause race conditions - for example, you probably have to open communication to your device and pass the value of the reference into the global before being able to use it. If you don't, you may start having problems, and it will be hard to locate them.

How can I run two different vi's in same project which are accessing same global variable with out effecting the speed of the execution of both the vi's

I have build an Labview project with FPGA target . I have configured an FPGA VI and an host Vi to acquire data and logged the data to a file and stored the latest data in a global variable simultanously. I have configured one more VI in the same project to access the global variable. I have build a dll to access both the VI as functions in LabWindows/CVI code. My task in CVI is to update configured GUI with latest data periodically and run the host VI continously for a long time and log the data to a file. GUI should update for every one second with latest data for this I am using the second VI in which I am accessing the global varibale in which the latest data has been stored in host VI.

Business Rules : Unable to create a global variable (Fixed)

Hello all,
I try to create a global variable in order to use it in a business rule;
I selected an outline.
I chose the type "Member"
I chose the dimension "Period"
I clicked on the lookup button in front of the default value and chose the member "January"
Finally, I chose the usage type "Run-Time prompt" and type in a prompt string.
Unfortunately, when I click on save, I get an error message : Variable value ["January"] is invalid.
If I try to do not specified a default member, it is possible to save.
But when I launch the business rule and specified a member in the the prompt message, I get an error 1060120 : OLAP error.
I cannot figure out what's going wrong, so any help is welcomed.

I finally figure out what's going wrong.
This issue is due to the fact that the outline is configured to accept duplicated names.
When I create the same outline but with duplicated names turn off, every thing goes perfectly.
I don't know why the outline accepts duplicated name.
In fact, I do not understand what are the reasons for using duplicate name...

Find and replace global variables

Hi there,
I've ran into a mess with my global variables. While I was trying to rename one of the globals, all instances in hundreds of subvis turned corrupt. The icon of the global variable turned black and the wires starting at the variable became broken. The amazing thing is that the black icons seem still to be linked to the correct global variable. If I leave the mouse cursor on the icon, the correct file path appears in the context help window. If I double click on the corrupt icon, the correct vi is opened. I tried "Save as" and "Rename" with various options. LabVIEW seems to browse through all affected vis but the icons remain broken. My last hope was to run the "Find and replace" tool (Ctrl + F), but it doesn't work for global variables for some unknown reason, unfortunately. Compare

The LabVIEW compiler would have told you that right away. If you click the broken run arrow on the situation you will get the message:

Seems pretty straightforward to me. But then, perhaps it's because I've been using LabVIEW for some time.

I don't want to get into yet another global variable debate here. The only comment regarding global variables made in this thread was a tongue-in-cheek comment I made. I was not dissing global variable. In fact, I use them quite often. Global variables, like every other programming construct ever invented have their use. The main reason you will see the so called "proven active veterans" go crazy over global variables is that they constantly see them being abused, causing race conditions, and then have to listen to newbies complain that their program doesn't work and LabVIEW sucks, when it's really their programming skills that's the real problem. But that's just my opinion.

Oral exam - Flash CS4 - Local/global variables?

In two days, i have an Oral exam in flash programming, with CS4.
we've been given a problem to solve, and i naturally am having problems solving it!
This is the problem
You are suppost to make a calculator. The calculator should be able to show how much time a person uses
when he/she climbs a mountain when hiking. Time is counted in minutes, and the height is the mountain-height.
a) I should be able to calculate, and show how many heightmeters one walks per minute.
example:
Height: 1440 meters
time: 360 minutes
1440/360 = 4 Heightmeters per minute.
4 * 60 = 240 heightmeters per hour
So, i pretty much figured this out.
iHeight, iTime and iHeightmeters, and iHeightmeters2(for the hour one).
My problem shows itsself when i get to b.
b) animation: Show a person that walks from the bottom, to the top of the mountain, in this application(basically the stage, with the calculator on the right side or something along those lines)
I animated, and i was able to give my "guy" some speed in x and y direction, so that he walks up to the top of the mountain.
c) Let the speed from a, decide the speed the person walking up the mountain has.
So what i'm suppost to do is:
mcWalkingman.x += iHeightmeters;
mcWalkingman.y += iHeightmeters;
Theese values have to recide in a function for themselfs, a function only containing speed variables and such. While the "iHeightmeters" recide in the first function where the calculator is. How do i get whatever value iHeightmeters turns out to be, into the next function or another function at all, when the variables are local?
I hope you understand my problem, and that someone is able to help me.

If i got you right you want to share a variable between differnet functions ?
You need to specify it globally and not within the function. If you are programming it just in the Flash IDE, it would be something like
var iHeightmeters:int = 123456;
testFunction();
function testFunction():void

If you do this within a class, it should be
private var iHeightmeters:int = 123456;
testFunction();
private function testFunction():void
trace("iHeightmeters = " + iHeightmeters);

Using Global variables in business rules

In EAS after expanding the Business Rules section there is a Global Variables section. I have created some global variables in this section and I am trying to use them in the Rule editor and not having much luck. Are they retrieved differently to local variables...Currently this is how I am calling them within a FIX....

Please correct me if I am wrong, also can any one provide some good documentation and some gd links for writing business rules. I'm just starting out to create some business rule which runs on save on some input forms I am creating and finding it rather difficult.... :-(..

Hi,
Global variables will work in the same way as local variables so you are using them correctly.
Business rules are just really glorified calc scripts, if you want to know about calc script commands have a read of the tech ref :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12825_01/epm.111/esb_techref/frameset.htm?launch.htm
It will have all the calculation commands and functions and descriptions on how they work.

Functinal global variable for producer - consumer architecture

Hi all,
I am using a Producer - consumer architecture for my data acquistion as in the belwo diagram.. at some time i am stuck insde the while loop continously acquiring data .. is there any way i use one stop button as a functional gloabl variable and stop inside (consumer while loop) as well as producer architecture....
Why i need this ?? so many design rules say that global variables are not a good idea...

FGVs will work fine for your application. You can also wire your error cluster to your stop button. Your producer loop should throw an error 1 when the stop button is pressed, which will in turn stop your consumer loop. But you would need a slightly different design for this. Your consumer loop is designed to not advance until the stop button is pressed. Instead of using and enum, you can use your producer loop to control the trigger to take a measurement. No need for the while loop in the consumer loop this way. You could set up your consumer loop to take a number of measurements, and then quit or take measurements for a certain amount of time. Either way, you can stop your while loop when it times out.
If you choose to stay with this design, a simple state machine archetecure might be better based on what I see.

Global variable updating

Problem:
If you have a book with ten chapters and use a variable as the issue number in the footer of each page, this results in a long and manual process to update it.
It would save me a lot of time if I could update a variable across all files in a book at the same time.
Proposed solution:
At the moment, variables are only managed in individual .fm files, not in the .book file. You could have a Global Variable Update option in the book window which brings up a dialog allowing you to select any open .fm file (much like the Import Formats window). Then you can select a variable from this .fm file and type a new value for it. The variable will then be updated for all .fm files in the book (or created if no such variable exists).

There is a way to update your single variable definition across your entire book. I'm assuming you want the variable value to be the same in all or in all your selected files as well.
Requirement: The variable you are updating must be named the same in all your files.
Potential Pitfall: If you have Running h/f variables defined differently from file to file, the definitions will be overwritten to what the file you are importing from has defined.
Ok, assuming your variable "issue number" is named the same in all your chapters, make a copy of one of your chapters by saving it out as "importvar.fm" (or whatever).
Now edit the definition of that user variable to what it needs to be. Do not close the variable palette.
In the list of user variables, delete all other user variables, but leave "Issue Number" as the only user defined variable in the palette.
Close the variable palette and save the file.
Select the files in your book that you want to import to. File>Import>Formats (Alt FIO) and select ONLY "Variable Definitions". Select "Import".
Done. In addition to your request for an update to the program, I would like the ability to deselect the system variables from a "Variable Definitions" Import.

How can I programmatically create and use a global variable?

I have an app where the number of AI DAQmx tasks I create are specified in a config file. I have a monitor task that periodically looks at the latest values from all DAQ tasks. I've been doing this with a set of global variables because it was the simplest way to do it. But to do this, I have to explicitly create a separate AI task that uses the hard-coded global variable name for the DAQmx samples. I would prefer to only write one VI for the DAQ loop that writes to a global variable that I programmatically create based on the config file. The only solution I can think of is to use a global variable "pool" that is sized bigger than I expect to need, and then have a big switch case to select which one I want based on the task index. But this sounds pretty silly.

I tend to agree with Ben. I don't buy the concept of taking the asy way out (globals) because it very rarely will things remain static. You almost always have to extend the features and functionality of an application and then you will run into issues with sloppy and lazy implementations. The solutions offered may require a little time to learn but once you do it doesn't really require any extra effort.

Use of global variables like g_cnt_transactions_transferred in the LSMW

when i had a look at the some of the LSMW's whic use IDOC as the object of uploading data into SAP from external Files i have found in the coding under the step "Maintain Field Mapping and Conversion Rules" that they use some of the global variables like below

my doubt is where i can find these variables 'g_cnt_transactions_transferred ','g_cimtyp','g_mescod','g_fileport','g_trfcport' in the LSMW and what is the use of the variable 'g_cnt_transactions_transferred ' in the LSMW.
I have treid to find out the above listed variables looking in step 'Maintain Field Mapping and Conversion Rules' under global variabels list and the other lists also but i couldnt found.

Hi Seetha,
In the LSMW Workbench go to the option user menu. And check the option display conversion program.
Now when you execute with the radio button on dislplay conversion program, you ll see the code that got generated in the background while you built your LSMW.
The global variables that you have mentioned are bound to be there in this program generated in the background..
You can put a break point here and see for yourself what the value of these global variables are at runtime.
File port, TRFC port , no. of transactions executed by one run of the LMSW Idoc program , message type are some of the fields that you have asked for .

Can F4IF_INT_TABLE_VALUE_REQUEST FM return a value in a global variable?

Hi everybody,
I need to use F4IF_INT_TABLE_VALUE_REQUEST FM because I have to let users select an specific option before choosing another value. The point is that I need to save in a program global variable what the user selects, and decide something with it in the program.
Is it possible that F4IF_INT_TABLE_VALUE_REQUEST FM returns the value in a sinple variable or it has to be paramter?
I look in a lot of previous threads but I didn't find anything, and I don't know if it's possible.

Sure you can. All you need to do is to store what the function returns in your global variable. It don't need to be returned back to screen field.

Problem with .DLL and global variables

Hi,
I need some helps to figure out my problem.
I wrote a .dll file to open and run a GUI. When I run it at the first time, it is ok. When I call it again, there is an error "Pointer to free memory passed to library. It will be ok if I completely exit the program that calls the .dll before re-call it. I think there is some problems with global variables when I call another thread. How can I free global variables between threads. Is there any solution for this problem?

Are you doing anything intentionally that frees your globals?
CVI ships with an example program that demonstrates calling a DLL to create a user interface: guidll.cws.
I made two simple modifications to guidll.cws.
1. In guidll.c, I made hpanel global by moving its declaration from RunDLLUI() to right below the #include statements.
2. In useguidll.c, I duplicated the lines calling RunDLLUI () and MessagePopup() to call the DLL gui twice.
I built the project and ran it. I had no problems with free'ed globals.
Take a look at the guidll example.
Can you either post your code or a modification to guidll that demonstrates the problem you're having?

How do i create and pass a global variable from one vi to several sub-vi's?

I am trying to create a program that opens several front panels (sub-VI's) in sequence. in each front panel, the user would open a file that the name is obtained from the previous sub-VI. I would like to know how i could pass the filename and refnum of the file thorough from one sub-vi to another. A global variable would do it in VB, but how do we do global vars in LABWIEW. thanks

I put together a sample VI and Sub VI that illustrates how to pass a Refnum and access a data file while in a Sub VI.
For multiple VIs just repeat the sub VI process.
You probably don't wanna use a Global Variable if not needed (can add to the mess down the road haha).
Let me know if it helps you out! Or if I can clarify anything else!

How do you override global variable values when calling oraxsl or xsl.exe?

I am a newbie to oracle xslt.
I have down loaded the latest version of xdk (10.1.0.2...). (Jan 2, 2009).
In the past I haveI used micorsoft's "msxsl.exe" to perform my transformations.
I am looking for a more up-to-date transformation tool.
I found Oracle's version, and thought I would try it out.
I have run the "bin/xsl.exe -hh" command.
I read its help data. It states that variables are
passed by coding a pramater "-V <var> <value>".
I have also examined the oraxls.bat file.
I found the documentation on "oracle.xml.parser.v2.oraxsl" class.
It states that parameters are passed after the "-p" switch.
It says the value of the -p parameter is "a list of paramemters".
I don't find this sufficient information to be useful.
I can spend days guessing, and I might get lucky.
I thought it my be better to ask for help.
I need to pass in (override) values for 3 global variables.

near the documentation for the "oraxsl" class.
How do you format the options string to communicate more than one param statement?

The syntax for specifying this information is not very clear in either situation.

I had hopped that the Oracle's xsl Verion 2 routine could handle xslt 2.0 commands
such as "xsl:for-each-group", since it handled multiple xsl:outputs.
From reading some of the documentation it seems it only handles xslt 1.0 syntax/commands.
Is this true? (or is the documentation not up-to-date?).
Any help on passing param values to xsl.exe and/or "oraxsl" class is appreciated.

Here is the line from one of my testing .bat files that passed in one parameter. I can't recall if I've passed in two, but this will give you a starting point for passing in multiple
