Gnome 3.10 session logfile

Hi, yesterday after a system update with pacman -Syu, my Gnome 3.10 - succesfully updated 2 weeks ago - stopped working. GDM works correctly but when I insert my user and password the screen goes black with cursor and the system lock for 2/3 minutes, then it shows me a white Something was wrong splash. Where I can pick a logfile which can help me finding the problem? Thank you.

I have the same problem since Gnome 3.10 was in the testing repo, about 30 days more or less and downgrading pulseaudio and libpulse the problem was solved,
I have no upgrade and ignore Pulseaudio and libpulse in /etc/pacman.config, in waiting for a solution, it seems that much depends on pulseaudio Gnome now, I think.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME 3: GDM session selection

    Hi,
    is the session list from gdm (gnome2) gone?
    Now it doesn't seem possible to select the session (ie. kde, gnome, lxde...)
    anyone?

    it is possible if more sessions are available. If only one is available then the selection list is hidden.

  • Many startup programs in Gnome 2.24 Session preferences

    I see quite a few new startup programs in the new Gnome Session preferences.
    1. AT SPI Registry Wrapper ( what does this do?)
    2. Gnome Keyring Daemon wrapper.
    3. Gnome Settings Daemon
    4. Gnome Settings Daemon helper
    Which of these can be safely removed or disabled?
    I disabled Gnome Login sound and Remote Desktop.
    Thanks.

    1. AT SPI Registry Wrapper - is related with accessibility. I've disabled it to no ill effect.
    2. GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper - sounds important, so I left it enabled. after all, network-manager accesses the keyring (as well as some other programs).
    3. GNOME Settings Daemon - I left this alone because it sounds important. I think, if you disable, you may have problems with wallpapers and other visual styles.
    4. GNOME Settings Daemon Helper - Same as above.

  • Slim/Gnome (ck-launch-session did not fix)

    Hey guys, I've searched up and down wikis and fora today to no avail.  My problems are as follows:
    When using SLiM with GNOME:
    1) nm-applet and the "Network Connections" gui give no control over the network unless run as root
    2) No GUI way to shut down
    Everywhere I go has said to either A) add ck-launch-session to .xinitrc (or the occasional other place, none of which have worked for me) or B) edit policy kit things, using CLI tools that have man pages but I don't actually have, and don't know where to get.  I can't even go and edit them myself, because where the files are supposed to be are restricted even to root, or don't exist.
    For now, I switched to gdm, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd like to switch back to SLiM, if I can get it to work.  Just open to ideas at this point.  Let me know what information you need, I'd be happy to get it for you.  Thanks in advance.

    Yes, it does, but I had to do some weird stuff to make it work.  If you need, I can try to look up the changes I made, but I'll be lucky to find it.  I've been trying everything I can think of to fix the problems caused by this.
    EDIT: Actually, found it again, by accident. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ud … if_present
    Are you in power and network groups?
    Yes, to both.

  • Accidentally logged out of Gnome during VNC session (Solved)

    The title says it all; I'm stuck with SSH, and x11vnc won't start when no one is logged in. I didn't know this. Now I know
    Is there any way to log myself back in so I can start x11vnc again?
    Harry
    EDIT: Stopped GDM manually, created an .xinitrc file with "exec gnome-session" in it, and then ran xinit. Piece of cake

    I know this is marked "solved," but is there any way to give myself the GDM login screen so gnome-settings-daemon functions properly?

  • [SOLVED!]I'd like to add a dedicated Gnome-Shell session entry to GDM.

    Edit:
    Well, thanks for all your help guys, I really did appreciate it all.
    However I've remembered something I used to use in Ubuntu.
    I added a Gnome-Shell .desktop file into my /home/myname/.config/autostart folder like this
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Application
    Exec=gnome-shell --replace &
    Hidden=false
    X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
    Name[en_US]=Gnome Shell
    Name=Gnome Shell
    Comment[en_US]=Start Gnome Shell!
    Comment=Start Gnome Shell!
    OnlyShowIn=GNOME
    It starts only in Gnome and nothing else, just how I wanted it to. I'm aware that this is more of a bandaid fix than anything else, but it works!
    Thanks again, now I can use KDE, Gnome-Shell, and Openbox.

    Hello nimbus,
    i don't have a gdm setup at hand, but i think you still need gnome-session. /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-shell.desktop should probably state
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    Exec=gnome-session --session gnome-with-shell
    Type=Application
    note gnome-sessions man page; sessions specified via the --session flag are looked for in /usr/share/gnome-sessions/sessions.
    There you should have a file like gnome-with-shell.desktop
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    EDIT: Well....definately more progress this time....I think.
    It still doesn't load gnome-shell and instead says
    No EXEC Line in session file gnome-shell, loading fallback mode.
    Here are my entries
    /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-shell.desktop
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    Exec=gnome-session --session gnome-with-shell
    Type=Application
    /usr/share/gnome-sessions/gnome-with-shell.session
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;gnome-power-manager
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    Exec=gnome-shell (I added this in thinking it might be the issue
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    OnlyShowIn=Gnome
    I can still get it to load by using grun and typing gnome-shell --replace, but that's besides the point. Also it would seem that none of my startup applications load like they are suposed to, but I'm sure it's some sort of bug related to the issue.
    Edit:
    Adding even further to the oddness, it would appear that gnome.session already supposedly has these entries, further baffling me as to why it doesn't load gnome-shell to begin with unless it's in my /home/name/.config/autostart folder.
    /usr/share/gnome-sessions/Gnome.session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    Sigh...really confused now. I guess what I need help with is figuring out why old shell here isn't loading unless it's in my autostart directory.

  • SXDE 79b Gnome sessions fail?

    I've got this on 3 systems now (SPARC, X86 and X64)
    Either a clean install from the 79b image, or upgrading a working 70b image, if any user logs into the console with Gnome (Java Desktop) session, the login starts and then the user gets thrown back to the login screen. Looking in the user's home directory looks like a core dump occurred, but I lack the skills to debug it.
    Any known issues with SXDE 79b in this regard?
    Cheers,

    Stunts wrote:I also had that problem, altough on a different computer. And by themeing not working I mean "I can't change any dconf settings". It was due to ~/.cache being owned by root (go figure).
    Unfortunately this is not the case for me.  I erased the directory, just in case (perhaps this was stupid), but this does not help easier.  Somehow gnome-settings-daemon is not started, or crashes somewhere on the way.  When I start it manually, then it works.
    I have erased the color plugin (/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/libcolor.so) as per advice somewhere else on this forum, but this did not help either.
    Most themes don't work on Gnome 3.2 tough due to an API change. You'll just have to wait for the theme authors to update them.
    I am using the default theme (I believe), so I think this is not the reason in my case .
    EDIT: It was not easy to figure out how to start up gnome-settings-daemon manually. So for the record, I found it in /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon (not in my PATH).

  • Rotate Display in Gnome on wayland

    So the question; is it currently possible to rotate displays in a (dual) display configuration under gnome via wayland?  It is clearly possible under xorg, via randr, but this results in horrible screen tearing on the rotated display when scrolling webpages.  Under wayland, there is no screen tearing (ever), so I think this might be a solution if I can get the screen rotated.  There are obviously many other benefits of wayland as well.  The settings are missing under the default screen utility for gnome, as well as under aranadr.  I am running radeon git drivers and have tested with both the EnablePageFlip and the new TearFree options for xorg to no avail.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

    Previously you had to install xwayland and vf86-video drivers patched for it. These days everything required is included in xorg-server 1.16, or rather its development snapshots.
    Could you tell me what is actually missing in current Arch?
    Actually you'll have to wait for Gnome 3.14 if you don't want anything from development snapshot. Because the code in 3.12 only supports the old xwayland (maybe the Gnome developers only cares the stability in Fedora), the code for the Xwayland DDX in Xorg 1.16 has been added in Gnome 3.13 series and will be released with 3.14.

  • KDE and LXDE sessions not showing up in GDM

    I've got a working Gnome Desktop environment and recently installed the two DE's for testing purposes
    pacman -S lxde-common openbox kdebase
    I still get only the Gnome set of sessions at GDM login. I tried adding
    /home/<mydefaultuser/.xinitrc:
    exec gnome-session
    exec startlxde
    exec startkde
    It didn't help.

    If I'm not mistaken, GDM polls /usr/share/xessions for relevant .desktop files (and not your .xinitrc). See here for some more info.

  • Gnome help

    I just installed gnome and gnome-extras and gdm, i boot up, login, and all i see is a box in the top left corner that say
    Shutdown
    Task(or processes)
    Log(or something)
    And one other thing.
    That is all i see
    I added "portmap", "fam", "dbus" and "hal" to the DAEMONS line is rc.conf

    I'm sure I've seen that when I logged in from gdm without any gnome or other wm installed (can't recall what caused me to do that...)
    I take it you're booting into runlevel 5 and using GDM to log in, so gdm isn't the problem?  Is gnome in the sessions menu?
    Also, I think you don't need dbus in your daemons - it's started by hal I think.

  • Autostart screen session after running startx?

    I have the following in my .zshrc:
    if [[ $STY = '' ]] then screen -d -R chris; fi
    This works great when using GDM: I log in, and upon opening a terminal, I have my screen session. I can then open another terminal and the screen session is transferred across, detached in the previous terminal window.
    If I don't use GDM, screen starts when I log in (in framebuffer mode?), as I'd expect. But then when I type 'startx' and open a terminal in GNOME, my screen session isn't transferred.
    Is there a way to get screen to start in gnome-terminal, after running 'startx'?

    It does, I'd just rather not type it.
    Using GDM as my login method, gnome-terminal automatically grabs the screen session (because it's not already started?).
    Using startx method, gnome-terminal doesn't get the screen session.
    I just wonder if there's a way to get the first outcome with the second method?

  • Weird problem using "Login" in MaxL script

    Hi there
    I have created a MaxL script for loading som data into an Essbase. The script you can see below.
    login 'user' 'password' on 'nkm18k14';
    import database 'realtest'.'Loadtest'
    data from text data_file '\\nkm18k00\Planning\Loaddata\lonbud.txt'
    using server rules_file 'LonBLoad'
    on error write to '\\nkm18k00\Planning\Errorlogs\realtest.txt';
    When I try to execute it, as it is i get the following error "(3) Syntax error near ['$'], which im guessin is line 3, right?
    When I remove line 1 (the login statement), the script runs just fine. What is goin on, any ideas?
    I as a user have write acces to the network locations specified, could it be that the essbase uses som kind of system user that doesn't have acces to the network location?
    Any valuable input will be appreciated.
    Regards, Jacob

    It's true that they are not "needed" from a security approach, but from a maintenance approach you still end up having to touch a large number of scripts if you store the connection details in them.
    As a system user, you don't even have to change the password -- but if you have someone leave the company you may just want to.
    Either way, I would never want to hard code connectivity details inside dozens of scripts when I can keep it in a single place.
    Here is the MXL_Shell file for Windows -- you can obtain the SendEmail.exe from multiple places, but the syntax should be validated.
    The location of the scripts, log files, and batch items can of course be modified to your liking as well...
    The Errors that are ignored are stored in a file called "IGNORED.TXT" in the Batch directory (see below for what I ignore).

  • Remotely Installing

    Hi.
    What is the best tool to install Oracle databases on Linux from a remote Windows machine?
    On a Mac, I can do it using a terminal compatible with X Server, but what is the Windows version, since PuTTY does not allow me to do so?
    Thanks in advance.

    You could use VNC emulating a gnome or kde session, or any other, commercial or free XServer. You can use cygwin, but personally speaking, It sometimes mess the screen and shrinks the text fields, so it may become a bit uncomfortable experience.

    I have installed Vmware Server from AUR. It seems like it works fine for a short time. I can access the web interface after the initial configuration is done. But the problem is that is suddenly stops responding after a while. I still have not got to the point where I have installed a virtual OS. I have just created the virtual machine itself.
    A couple of times is has worked with restarting the Vmware daemon. But most of the time I just get an "Unable to connect" message when I try to connect to it trough Firefox. Opera gives the same result. But telnet seems to get contact.

    I managed to install Windows 7 in Vmware Server yesterday. And it worked fine, except that my whole system became very unresponive together with the Windows 7 installation. But it did work. I rebooted my computer today and started up the vmware deamon, and no luck in connecting to the server. I only get an 'Unable to connect' error in Firefox. To fix this, I will have to remove /etc/vmware and install vmware-server over again.
    So at the moment, Virtualbox is winning hands down. It don't slow down my hole system, and Windows feels as fast as it was running not in a VM. And it works. The only issue is very slow IO.
    Vmware Workstation 6 was alot faster than the Server version. Maybe I shuld try it instead. Just have to find a PGKBUILD for it.
