Autostart screen session after running startx?
I have the following in my .zshrc:
if [[ $STY = '' ]] then screen -d -R chris; fi
This works great when using GDM: I log in, and upon opening a terminal, I have my screen session. I can then open another terminal and the screen session is transferred across, detached in the previous terminal window.
If I don't use GDM, screen starts when I log in (in framebuffer mode?), as I'd expect. But then when I type 'startx' and open a terminal in GNOME, my screen session isn't transferred.
Is there a way to get screen to start in gnome-terminal, after running 'startx'?
It does, I'd just rather not type it.
Using GDM as my login method, gnome-terminal automatically grabs the screen session (because it's not already started?).
Using startx method, gnome-terminal doesn't get the screen session.
I just wonder if there's a way to get the first outcome with the second method?

The ipad screen is white. Holding buttons didn't work so I restored it on iTunes. When I press home and on switch, the screen is white, goes black then back to white with no logo at all. FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE

Firefox claims that it is already running and will not let me start a new session after closing out
I've been having this problem intermittently on both my Dell XPS 8000 and my HP nx7400 laptop. The Dell is running the latest version of Windows 7 Pro and the HP is running XP Pro (fully updated). After closing out of a Firefox session and running other apps, Firefox will not let me initiate another session, saying that "Firefox is already running... Please close the session..." That's not an exact quote, but you get the idea. CTRL-ALT-DEL and all other conventional means don't work and I am forced to reboot the system. This is a royal pain.. and I need some pain relief! Any suggestions? I may revert to an earlier version of Firefox until I see a solution... can't hurt, but I really like 4.0 and I don't look at going backwards as "progress."

TomSounds like it is hanging when you exit and later try to restart Firefox.

after running mac tuneup got a red dot on the hard drive icon, nothing would respond, now on restart cant get past white screen with apple logo, mac tune up disk still in laptop
Restart your MBP holding the trackpad down and hopefully the disk will be ejected. Then try to return it and get a refund or put it in the trash. There is nothing that software does for your MBP that you cannot do yourself or with free software.
If can get your MBP started, delete all traces of the offending software. Worst case is that you may have to erase the HDD and reload the OS and your user data. I trust that you have a backup (minus MacTuneUp).

When I pull the notification screen down after about 5 seconds the screen goes black and then the apple appears for about 30 seconds and then returns to the home screen, this is an iPhone 4 running ios7 , any ideas??
One problem though, the top button on my phone is jammed so i cant power off the phone, anyway of resetting the phone without using the top button ?

Can't start gnome-session after system update.
hi all
I have done a whole system update .
pacman -Syu
and now I can't start the desktop environment.
I tried to delete the xorg.conf and create new 1 and then copy it to /etc/X11
X -configure
but that didn't work.
and when I am trying to create new xorg file I got an error message telling me that the number of screens detected is not matched , I am using a laptop .
I checked ~/.xinitrc and /etc/rc.conf and everything is right.
any suggestion??

and I can't log in, I just got the black screen and when launching startx I got the gnome shell session but after 2 seconds of that I got a failure in Gnome and have to log out.

Gnome 3.6.1 crashes after running alt f2 gksu gedit
For about a week or so now I've been experiencing gnome crashes after running an application using alt f2 gksu [some app], initially it works fine then I use the super key to open a new application and gnome crashes.
I've been searching the forums and the wiki for days if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Just experienced the crash again,

# systemctl restart gdm.service
and got stuck back at the login with the message Oh no! Some thing has gone wrong

I removed 'gksu' anything with pacman. And I followed this blog's http://dev-loki.blogspot.com/2010/06/su … nsuse.html instructions to create 'xsudo' as a replacement for gksu.
Its to early to tell if the problem is fixed, but I am not recieving any error messages with gedit or nautilus when I run them with 'xsudo' account.

Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update (Couldn't fix it)

I also have been experiencing some problems after running Software Update (Security update + Java) a couple of days ago. Similarly to Jandaf (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9000023) I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. Based on the information provided in this forum I have tried some procedures which didn't solved my problem so far. Below I describe I have tried:
1) I have booted using the installation DVD and run the disk utility. When performing the First Aid/Verify Disk I found some errors ('Invalid node structure'). But I couldn't fix the problem using disk repair (same problem 'Invalid node structure' 'Volume check failed'.
2) I also tried to boot in single user mode (command + s) to run fsck -fy. It didn't work. I got the following message (last 4 lines):
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: -s
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: booting in single user .. do not match
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKeyboard" has no kernel dependency.
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCEventDriver" has no kernel dependency.
3) When trying to boot in safe mode. I got a grey screen with the following message:
'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button".
4) I also tried to 'Archieve & Instal'. Again no success. After reading the DVD the action is terminated because some errors (does not specify).
5) I also tried the 'German Medicine' (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8728797#8728797) (i.e. Connect the 'problematic MacBook' to my old G4 via firewire and reinstall the 2009-001 update). Again no success. The G4 cannot mount the MacBook hardrive.
I don't know what to do any more.
A) Can I resuscitate my old system? If yes how?
B) If not, can I at least save the data I have in my old HD?
C) Is it possible to format and reinstall the OS or is this this computer doomed?

Due to my lack of knowledge I can't judge how bad this is. But I can tell you that every time I read the word bad in the log it scares the s*** out me. -
My MacBook Pro will turn on and get to the login screen. After I login though it goes to a white screen.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
HELP - ABAP Program Cancelled After Running for 2.5 Hours in Background
I have an ABAP report program that was being tested in our QA system and it died after running for 2.5 hours with the status of "Cancelled" (which, I assume, means it was terminated by SAP for exceeding some type of governor).
I ran Code Analyzer and no performance issues were recognized.

I'm not sure it was an error, per se, but maybe SAP canceled it because it had been running too long? The "DATASET_NOT_OPEN" is curious although I've no idea what it means.

[SOLVED] Xorg Strangeness- Running startx runs xorg for a split second
As in the subject, I am trying to run startx on my Arch (x86_64) machine for the first time since installation, however X only runs for a split second before quitting.. I've checked the log, but there aren't any errors that pop up to tell me what's going on. What I've been doing that I think may affect the answer:
Installed proprietary nvidia drivers that I downloaded off of nvidia's website (though I removed it by running sudo ./driver.run -uninstall)
Installed nvidia drivers from the repository (sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils)
shut off nouveau drivers (blacklisted nouveau in /etc/modprobe.d)
Ran nvidia-xconfig to generate new xorg.conf file
/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows nothing with (EE), so I assume that everything is going smoothly, however still can't get X to work. Any help would be appreciated. Google's let me down so far.
Perhaps some fresh eyes could help me

Listen to this man. What I meant by Xorg dependencies is that people usually install xterm, xclock, etc so they have a very basic WM set up so they can see that Xorg is in fact working. Try setting up a .xinitrc with the following in it:
exec startxfce4 --with-ck-launch

Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update
My MacBook will not boot up after running Software Update (Security update + Java?) earlier today. I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. I have tried restarts several times and tried to start up from my original system DVD - this makes no difference.
I called Apple support, tried resetting the power and PRAM - still no difference. He had no knowledge of other problems reported; although I note recent post may have same issue.
I cannot get an appointment at my Apple Store before Monday.
Any suggestions?Still no success. When I hold down the option key when powering up I get the hard disk icon plus arrowhead (only). When clicking the arrowhead it goes to the gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.
This happens both with DVD in slot and without DVD. the DVD image is not coming up on screen. When I start up without DVD the hard disk icon appears promptly. When I start with DVD in the DVD is spinning for a short period before the hard disk icon appears. On clicking the arrowhead to hard disk icon the DVD spins again for a while then stops. Apart from the DVD spinning, both situations result in gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel. -
How to Read the Screen Fields after a Transaction ?
Hi all,
I am working on the Transaction 'O4K_LICENSE'. After the transaction is run, it generates an Internal License number which is displayed on the screen. I tried using 'GET PARAMETER', but as the CALL TRANSACTION is called within a loop, the SAP Global memory is not getting refreshed and iam getting the same value for every loop for the Internal License Number.
Is there any function Module other than DYNP_VALUES_READ to get the screen field values? I tried using the above function module, but in vain and it is not getting any values.

The table OIHL has a composite primary key which is the combination of "External License Number" and "Internal License Number". The latter is generated after running the O4K_LICENSE transaction.
Moreover, iam attaching every record with a record generated in the program. Now, the same User(ERNAM) can create records having the same External License Number.
For example:
If i created a record yesterday with an external License Number 123, then say an internal lic no of 3 is assigned to it.
If i Create another record today with the same external lic no of 123, and an internal no of say 20 is attached to it, then i donot have any criterion to select the one which i have created today, as it fetches both the records.
To add to the worst, there is no timestamp field also.

I'm getting a rather annoying error when I try to open a pretty basic JSP page.
I'm rather new to the whole JSP scene, so I'm following the example found on pages 287 and onwards in "JSF in Action - Manning" in case anyone wanted to check my code against the source.
I've searched for about 4 hours now, coming back to this site a couple of times, once reading about writeouts and stuff. But I'm not really sure this is the issue in this case and if it is, where exactly the problem lies.
I've already fixed a number of errors I got (jtsl.jar and standard.jar missing etc...) but this particular problem is driving me (and my co-workers for that matter :-) ) up the wall.

Unfortunately, if your problem is the same as mine, you're going to feel pretty silly. I was navigating to the wrong page. If MyFaces(when running tomcat) tries to resolve to a page that doesn't exist, the error given above is what happens.
In my case I accidentally put my .jsp page into the wrong directory and ended up banging my head against the wall for an hour figuring that out. Hope this helps someone. -
USB Keyboard not working after running Monolingual
Okay, I'm not a Mac person and should have known that I was going to mess up my mother's iMac, but here it is -
In an attempt to improve the mac's performance I performed all of the actions described in the following article: 11 Ways to Optimize your Mac's Performance ( http://lowendmac.com/eubanks/07/0312.html ). Basically, I cleaned up files and 'other' system preferences. Things seemed to be fine and the computer did run much better. However, after running Monolingual and deleting what I understood to be 'unnecessary' PowerPC files the standard USB keyboard is no longer working.
I've tried to search for various remedies, but have come to a dead end. So I'm left with reinstalling the Snow Leopard OS (I think it is 10.6.8?) BUT I can't because it is asking to input the account password (which I know) to make the change and I can't figure how to do that when the keyboard not working.
Any help would be great!
*feeling like a bone head*How are you trying to reinstall Snow Leopard? If you're booting from the Snow Leopard or iMac Install DVD that came with the system then that should eliminate any of the issues you may or may not have caused when you deleted did the clean up work on your mom's system.
I suggest trying the following:
0) Verify that the caps lock key is off. It can make inputting passwords difficult if you don't realize it is ON.
1) Reset the PRAM by restarting the system then quickly press the command-option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears. Wait until you hear the computer restarts two times as indicated by the startup chime. For more info refer to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379.
2) If the issue persists after the PRAM reset then boot from the Snow Leopard or iMac Install DVD, whichever you have. Once you see the menu asking you to choose a language try using the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the language choice selection. If the arrow keys are working at this point it indicates your keyboard is at least partially functional. Go ahead and select the language then proceed to step 3.
3) Once the next screen appears move the cursor up to the menu bar area and pull down the Utilities menu. Select the 'Terminal' application. Once the Terminal application launches try typing the various keys on the keyboard and check to see if the correct characters are displayed. Please let us know if you detect any errors. If there are no errors then you should be able to quit the Terminal application and proceed with reintstalling the OS.
