Google search loses keyboard focus

Since iOS8 whenever I select Google (.co.uk) from favourites, as soon as I type the first letter of the search in Safari the keyboard drops out and closes, meaning I have to tap in the search box again to regain the keyboard. Happens almost every time unless I drag the screen down first. Either way it is annoying.
Anyone else? Any workarounds apart from dragging the page down before starting to type?
Or I accept it may be a Google problem not keeping up with latest Safari, but is this a uk-only thing?  I cannot find any other complaints.
With the first iteration of iOS8 the search box used to drop behind the keyboard, so this is an improvement I guess.
(ipad mini, non retina.)

THank you Bob. Forum search was useless!
John Alders solution is...
"I think I've cured it. Well I have for me.
Just suddenly occurred to me it may be something to do with Google predictive searching.
So I opened a new Google search and went straight to google settings (little cog top right in the Google window), then to Search Settings and changed the setting for predictive search (it doesn't seem to matter to what, as long as you change it), then scroll down and save your setting.
Once you've changed the setting and saved it you can change it back to your preferred setting, and save again of course."
I Suspect clearing cookies will clear the fix.

  • JPanel loses keyboard focus

    Ok, i have a JTextField which is initially disabled. A JPanel draws some stuff and receives keyboard input. When i enable the textfield, type some stuff, then press Esc (which disables it), i cant get the keyboard focus back on the JPanel. Here is an example:

  • Switching windows in Linux/Firefox loses keyboard focus. Workarounds?

    Hi,
    I've been stumbling on an issue in which an applet gets into a state where it can receive mouse events but not keyboard events. This state occurs some of the time when switching from a non-modal dialog to the applet.
    I've witnessed this behavior on:
    Linux (fc8), Firefox 3.0.10, Java plug-in 1.6.0_13, Gnome 2.20.3
    Sun Solaris (5.10), Firefox 3.0.8, Java plug-in 1.6.0_12, Sun Java Desktop System or CDE
    I can not reproduce this behavior using appletviewer, nor can I reproduce it on the Mac (Opera/Firefox/Safari), nor on Windows (Firefox/IE).
    I've crafted some code that shows the behavior:
    FocusApplet.java:
    import javax.swing.JApplet;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.border.*;
    import javax.swing.event.*;
    import java.beans.*;
    public class FocusApplet extends JApplet {
      JTextArea infoText;
        Object activeWindow;
        Object focusOwner;
        Object permanentFocusOwner;
           Applet contains two components.
           NORTH: Text field
           CENTER: Info text
           The info text is updated whenever the following
           KeyboardFocusManager properties change:
              activeWindow
           focusOwner
           permanentFocusOwner
      public void init(){
          JTextField tf = new JTextField("Type here");
          infoText = new JTextArea();
          infoText.setEditable(false);
          infoText.setLineWrap(true);
          infoText.setWrapStyleWord(true);
          infoText.setBorder(new EtchedBorder());
          this.add(infoText, BorderLayout.CENTER);
          this.add(tf, BorderLayout.NORTH);
          KeyboardFocusManager focusManager =
           KeyboardFocusManager.getCurrentKeyboardFocusManager();
          activeWindow=focusManager.getActiveWindow();
          permanentFocusOwner=focusManager.getPermanentFocusOwner() ;
          focusOwner=focusManager.getFocusOwner() ;
          updateText();
          focusManager.addPropertyChangeListener(
           new PropertyChangeListener() {
             public void propertyChange(PropertyChangeEvent e) {
              String prop = e.getPropertyName();
              if ("focusOwner".equals(prop)) {
                  focusOwner = e.getNewValue();
                  updateText();
              } else if ("permanentFocusOwner".equals(prop)) {
                  permanentFocusOwner = e.getNewValue();
                  updateText();
              } else if ("activeWindow".equals(prop)) {
                  activeWindow = e.getNewValue();
                  updateText();
          // Create non-modal dialog
          JDialog jdl = new JDialog((Frame)null,"Extra dialog",
                        false/*modal*/);
          jdl.setSize (300,550);
          jdl.setVisible(true);
        public void updateText() {
         infoText.setText("Active window: "+getName(activeWindow)+
              "\nFocus owner: "+getName(focusOwner)+
            "\nPermanent focus owner: "+getName(permanentFocusOwner));
        public String getName(Object obj) {
         return (obj==null) ? "null" : obj.getClass().getName();
    }Applet HTML:
    <applet code="FocusApplet.class" width="400" height="400"></applet>When I run this applet, I can click on the text field ("Type here") and enter text. Then, I switch between the empty dialog box and the applet using the window manager. (I.e., clicking on the dialog, then clicking on the applet.) Sometimes I see the following Keyboard Focus settings when I bring the applet to the front:
    Active window: sun.plugin.viewer.frame.XNetscapeEmbeddedFrame
    Focus owner: javax.swing.JTextField
    Permanent focus owner: javax.swing.JTextField
    In this case, clicking on the text field will allows the user to edit text. Good! However, 10%-50% of the time I get the following settings after I bring the applet to the front:
    Active window: null
    Focus owner: null
    Permanent focus owner: javax.swing.JTextField
    In this case, I can click on the applet, and I can highlight text in the text field, but I can not edit the text. (No carat appears. Bad!) Since there is no keyboard focus owner, the applet appears non-responsive.
    I have a few questions:
    1. Is this a Java plug-in bug? A Firefox bug? Who do I file a bug with, assuming there's not something I'm missing?
    2. Can anyone suggest a workaround?
    Thanks,

  • When opening my home page  or safari icons, they open but they are shaded and don't work, it's like they are frozen. I can tap on google and the keyboard come up but it won't search. Any ideas how to fix this?

    Hello,
    I am a new Ipad2 user and have a problem that I'm not sure what to do. When I try to open my homepage I created or the Safari icon, it opens fine, but they don't work. The page is shaded, does not scroll and is locked up. I can tap google and a keyboard come up and I can search but the results are shaded and are frozen(does not scroll). Does anybody know whats going on? I appreciate your help.
    Thanks

    Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
    If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
    A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Is there a keyboard shortcut to open first google search result in a new page?

    I would like to go to the first result of a google search easily, as I do in Chorme. In Chrome you can click TAB to hi-light the first result's link, then with a click open it. In Firefox, I can't do this, because if I click on TAB it will require me a lots of clicks to reach the first results.
    I am using the apostrophe and the keyboard to search within the links of the page.
    My goal is to open the first link without moving my hands from the keyboard.

    I apologize in advance if this information from the Windows platform is not applicable to Mac:
    If you have not disabled Instant Prediction results... After your results load, when you press the down arrow key on the keyboard, a blue triangle should appear to the left of the first result. You can use the up and down arrow keys to move between results, and open a result by pressing the Enter key.
    It doesn't seem to work on page 2 of the results for the search for some reason. ''However, if I press the Tab key once on that page, then the blue triangle appears and I can use the up and down arrow keys. This inconsistency is strange...''
    Some users have reported that logging into your Google account disables this feature, but I haven't noticed that myself.

  • Safari keyboard focus after a search

    I like using the keyboard as often as I can. With Chrome, I can hit the Tab key after searching from the search/URL bar. This moves the keyboard focus to the web page, which causes an arrow to appear in front of the first search result. With up/down keys and Enter, you can then go to any of the search results.
    What is the proper hotkey in Safari to move the keyboard focus from the search bar to the webpage?
    (Using Safari 7 on OS X)

    I think I found out why this didn't work -- in System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts, I've got the "Full Keyboard Access" option set to "All Controls"...

  • Cursor focus is changed to address bar instead of google search box on new tabs in FF 17.

    I've seen several threads that describe the same issue - the cursor appears in the address bar by default on a new tab. I have not seen a single solution. Mozilla needs to sort this out because it's very annoying.
    This started happening only after I updated to FF 17. Until that point the cursor was in the google search box. It was just a FF update, no new extensions or add-ons. The only workaround I have is the Custom New Tab extension.
    I just don't want to have to install new extensions to add functionality every time they update to a new version that creates new issues. FF already lacks some basic tab management functionality which forces me to use extensions s.a Tab Utilities. It's been 17 versions already and FF still doesn't let me set up new tabs from Bookmarks, Address bar, etc, or multi-row tabs / bookmarks, new tab position / focus, right-click menu options, etc etc etc. Just don't make it worse guys.

    Why is the default behavior designed to behave that way? That is very annoying and many people have complained about this.
    For years the cursor in a new window or new tab would go to the first text menu like for me in the Google search box. This was always the way in Firefox till I started using 17.0.1 in Windows 7.
    It seems like this could be addressed and I doubt this was suppose to be the default behavior.
    It is actually one of the most annoying things about Firefox now, as this was something I use to do alot was start a new tab and start typing my search right away or just hit ctrl-v to paste something I'd just copied. Now that goes in the address bar and makes me spend more time fixing the bad address and stupid search results from that.
    Please someone give us a solution.

  • Move Focus from Web Adress Bar when Google search page loads

    '''This relates to Firefox 4'''
    I use google search as my home page - when i start firfox or open a new tab manualy i want to have the focus start in the google search box, but in stead it stays in the search bar - is there a way to correct this behaviour as i generally start typing without looking at the screen and before i know it i hit enter and the results are returned from Yahoo or some such.
    Not a major issue but annoying.

    '''I had the same problem when I updated to firefox 4. This is how i fixed it:'''
    The problem seems to be caused by the 'New Tab Homepage' add on. So:
    # Disable or remove the 'New Tab Homepage' add on and restart firefox.
    # Download and install the firefox add on called 'NewTabURL' and restart firefox.
    # Click on the Options button for NewTabURL and uncheck 'Select location bar after loading new tab'
    # Under the 'Default URL for new tabs' heading, choose 'Home Page'
    # Click on the Save button.
    Hopefully, problem solved!

  • Possible Solution to Google Search Bar Not Working/Safari Not Loading Pages

    Hello Apple Forums,
    I have recently encountered a possible solution to a problem with Safari. The one in which Safari fails to load any page associated with www.google.com. Especially the Google Search Bar—a feature I use frequently.
    After browsing through the forums about the Google Search Bar issue, I took my knewly gained knowledge, and decided to do some diagnosing for myself.
    This is what I have done so far to try and solve this issue:
    Run Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Cron Scripts
    Cleared the following caches:
    System Local Computer Cache
    System VM (Swap) Files
    Curent User Cache
    Current User Icon Cache
    Internet Explorer Download Cache
    Page History
    Web Site Cache
    Temporary Files
    Safari Downloads List
    Form Values
    Page History
    Recent Searches
    Site Icons
    Web Site Cache
    User Cookies (used by Safari)
    Finder Recent Applications
    Recent Documents
    Recent Folders
    Recent Servers
    Recent Files of AppleWorks 6
    Disk Utility Disk Images
    Preview
    QuickTime Player Favorites/Recent
    REALbasic Projects
    TextEdit
    VideoLanClient
    and Other caches of Acquisition Current Downloads
    Acquisition Recent Searches
    MSN Conversation History
    Vicomsoft FTP Client Icon Cache
    All of the above runnings of Cron scripts and clearings of Caches were done using Mac Pilot version 1.1.5 (yes the one on the site is an updated version, but I have not downloaded it yet). If you decide to use this program to clear caches, I advise not clearing the Installer Receipts under the System section as Installer Receipts are used to correctly repair permissions. I do not clear Find File Indexes either, because I use the Find File feature quite frequently on my computer and I do not want to have it re-index files all the time (perhaps I'll do it every few months or so to refresh what I've got on the harddrive). Remember, all the information given in this paragraph is relative to Mac Pilot version 1.1.5.
    In addition, I have also repaired permissions using Disk Utility 10.4.4 (v145.7) (make sure you restart your computer after you repair permissions). I have taken out items in /harddrive/library/StartUpItems as well as taking out items in /harddrive/library/Internet Plug-Ins and in /user/library/Internet Plug-Ins and in user/library/Caches (restart your computer after taking out or putting in items in these locations).
    As of now, all the information mentioned above about trying to fix this problem have NOT worked.
    What HAS WORKED for me was tinkering with my 3rd party firewall—Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48). Under the Protection Settings, I HAD Enable Active FTB support, Enable Stealth mode, Enable suspicious activity protection (with Deny outgoing suspicious traffic and Deny incoming suspicious traffic selected), Enable UDP Protection (with Protect outgoing UDP connections, Allow access to essential services, and Protect a range of UDP ports 1 through 1023 selected).
    What I CHANGED in Protection Settings was DESELECT Enable suspicious activity protection (with Deny outgoing suspicious traffic and Deny incoming suspicious traffic DESELECTED). Upon deselecting that information the Google Search Bar feature in Safari WORKED practically instantaneously. Before hand, anything I inputted into Safari and after hitting Return on the keyboard just wound up hanging there.
    Just to be sure, all tests were performed on:
    IMac G4 800 Mhz SD Mac OSX 10.3.9 with ALL the latest Software Updates, Except Apple Remote Desktop Client version 1.2.4 and iPod Updater 2006-01-10
    I have a cable internet connection with ISP Time Warner Cable (RoadRunner) using a SurfBoard SB4100 Cable Modem on an AirPort Extreme Base Station (Apple Base Station V5.6)
    Interesting side note: I have a PowerBook G4 15" 1 Ghz Mac OSX 10.3.9 Laptop running on the same network (although it has an airport extreme card as opposed to the regular airport card in the iMac) with ALL the same latest Software Updates, Except iPod Updater 2006-01-10. The Apple Remote Desktop Client version 1.2.4 does not come up on Software Update on the Laptop and I can not find it on the harddrive using a name search in the Finder Find feature. It does not show up in Applications folder, so I do not know if it is on or active on the Laptop.
    The LAPTOP IS ABLE TO USE ALL GOOGLE FEATURES without DESELECTING Enable suspicious activity protection (with Deny outgoing suspicious traffic and Deny incoming suspicious traffic DESELECTED). Why this is apparent I have not officially confirmed.
    What I do know is that I have tried to Uninstall Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48) with the appropriate uninstaller but it FAILS during the uninstall (I wanted to uninstall and reinstall, it appears the program became corrupted). What I did to possibly circumvent this was to search for the phrase 'Personal Fire" using the Finder's Find feature (Search for items whose name contains 'Personal Fire') and deleted all the files that came up related to Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48). I then reinstalled Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48) since then, and it continues to have the problem with Enable suspicious activity protection (with Deny outgoing suspicious traffic and Deny incoming suspicious traffic selected).
    What I have not done:
    Updated Prebinding
    Run TechTool Pro version 4.1.2
    Install Combo OSX 10.3.9
    Initialize HardDrive with complete reinstallation of OSX 10.3.9
    To Summarize Possible Solution
    I've tried many possible solutions, what appears to work best as of now is to DESELECT Enable suspicious activity protection (making sure Deny outgoing suspicious traffic and Deny incoming suspicious traffic are deselected) under Protection Settings in Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48).
    One could try deselecting something similar in any firewall application other than Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48), to see if it is suspicious activity settings in firewalls that cause the problem.
    Any comments/feedbacks are extremely welcome.
    Hope It Helps!

    Hello tr:
    Welcome to Apple discussions and thank you for your very very thorough post.
    Your instincts to delete anything named "Norton" were right on the mark. Norton software is POISON to Macs running OS X. An additional software firewall is, IMHO, completely unnecessary. Turn on the built-in firewall in OS X - it is robust. In fact, if it is already on, there may be a conflict.
    Go to Symantec's web site and use the uninstaller you should find there to get rid of the Norton stuff. After you do that, do a "find" on Norton and Symantec to be sure it is all gone - the stuff hides everywhere.

  • Camera Raw loses system focus and becomes inactive

    While working in ACR if I hover over any of the command buttons, Save Image,  Open Image, Cancel, or Done for a few seconds the "tool tip" for the button displays and as soon as I move the mouse again the whole Camera Raw windows loses system focus and becomes inactive (every tab, control, menu, etc., becomes greyed out).  To regain the system focus I must move the mouse to the windows 7 taskbar and then back into Camera Raw.  If the fullscreen checkbox in Camera Raw is active the only way to regain system focus is to press the Windows Key twice on the keyboard and move the mouse out of the taskbar tray.  This gets pretty frustrating.  Any clues?

    It doesn't normally do this, I can assure you.  Normally the tooltips just pop up and Camera Raw stays active.
    Do you have any desktop management software installed, besides what Windows provides?
    Are your video drivers up to date?

  • Just downloaded Firefox 4.0; Google search box is failing to complete searches and then to take me to websites suggested. HUGELY FRUSTRATING!!! Want to go back to version 3.6.16 but am unable

    Google toolbar white search box (top left of screen) will offer suggestions to complete searches (as it used to do): for example type 'l' and 'lloyds tsb' will come up. When I click on the offered 'lloyds tsb' nothing happens; on version 3.6.13 and previous versions I would be taken direct to website selected on click. Now I have to type in whole of desired website: not just 'l' but all of 'lloyds tsb', for example, before being redirected to where I want to go.
    Have used Firefox for ages; so frustrated that I'm contemplating returning to Internet Explorer or trying Google Chrome.
    I've tried reinstalling 4.0 three time and no joy.
    Help me or lose me!

    Cheers - other 3.6.13 downloads I've tried all come up as 'file corrupted'.
    Would stil like to know why the problem with Google search not completing and if I can resolve this on version 4.0...

  • Address bar google search does not open in the current tab

    When I do a address bar google search, the search window does not open in my current tab (which is usually a newly blank tab window), instead it opens in a previously opened tab window (or sometimes even a new tab), but never does the search appear in the current tab. When it does this, it ofteb replaces a web page which I can no longer view it without going backwards.
    The only fix I have found is to open a new tab and go to Google's web page and search from there. But, this takes extra time and I have to remember to do this. Otherwise, I might lose web pages I wish to view.
    This never used to happen until recently. I have a Mac using Lion for the past year.
    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Anna

    I appreciate your input, but I don't want the google web page to open in a new window.
    Instead, I want to search using the address bar in using google to open the search in the tabbed webpage I am viewing, rather than open another tabbed webpage. When it opens in a different tab from the one I am in, it either creates a brand new tab, or more problematically, opens the search in an tabbed window which has an existing webpage I still want to access for viewing.
    This is a Firefox issue. Address bar searching works as it should in Safari.

  • Lose of focus (mouse click/enter key)

    Hello,
    we have a problem customers are complaining about for quite a while now, but despite our efforts, we can not fix it or at least determine with certainty the problem cause.
    We have an application launching forms apps, and from time-to-time we completely lose the focus on this form (generally after typing ENTER in a filter), I mean by focus, we cannot click anymore (cursor seems to stay on a object), we cannot press enter anymore (we get a 'Not defined key function') and so on...
    I heard somewhere that it could be due to 'KEY-OTHERS' trigger not handling correctly the ENTER-KEY. But I need this trigger for my filters, or is there another way? KEY_ENTER does only navigate from field to another.
    I found something which was able to remove focus lost (kind of a hack while trying to fix this on an on), but the problem is I had to remove this, because it blocks the opening of new windows or popups. It was a mouse-click trigger on forms triggers level:
    Go_Record(:System.Mouse_record);
    Go_Item(:System.Mouse_Item);
    But this blocks any window opening, and it also blocks some other tools we have developed.
    Thanks,
    Best regards,
    G.
    EDIT: Forms 11g, and I am pretty sure we had not that much problems with 10g
    EDIT2: I read the same kind of topics in the forum, but no patch seems to help
    AND we use JRE 1.7....

    this problem occurs with some of versions of JRE. Try with JRE JInitiator 1.3.1.22. Also unstalled all others JRE if exists.
    A file called fmrpcweb.res has also been provided which gives the Microsoft Windows client/server keyboard mappings. To use this file, rename fmrpcweb.res to fmrweb_orig.res, and copy fmrpcweb.res to fmrweb.res. Alternatively, use the term parameter as described above.
    By default, whether deploying client/server or over the Web pressing the ENTER key takes the cursor to the next navigable item in the block. To override this default behavior it is necessary to modify the forms resource file to revise the key mapping details.
    Modify fmrweb.res and change the Forms Function Number (FFN) from 27 to 75 for the Return Key. The line should be changed to the following:
    10 : 0 : "Return" : 75 : "Return"
    By default, the line is displayed with an FFN of 27 and looks as follows:
    10 : 0 : "Return" : 27 : "Return"
    This line should NOT fire the Key-Enter trigger since the Return or Enter key is actually returning the Return function represented by the FFN of 27. The FFN of 75 represents the Enter function and fires the Key-Enter trigger.
